The region remains trapped in a brutal cycle of violence, yet media coverage has been limited, and government involvement in securing peace has been negligible. A long struggle for justice On November 8, residents of Parachinar had staged a peaceful march (Walk for Peace) for two days. Their demands included security, justice, and for the government to ensure they remain connected with the rest of the country. Despite facing decades of intermittent and bloody conflict, residents of this region chose to appeal for justice rather than resort to violence. The irony is clear. While this tragic incident took place, the mainstream media remained focused on political events such as the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) impending 'final call' protest in the federal capital and the viral, indecent videos of different TikTokers. Pakistani media and news organisations have opted to cover petty issues for ratings and mostly ignored the tragedy, forcing the residents of Parachinar to mourn in isolation. Not Just A Number: Junaid Hafeez And His Lifelong Struggle Against The Odds The brutal murder in Parachinar provides an acute example of the region's chronic challenges of sectarianism, official disinterest, and extremist brutality Sectarianism and state negligence The state’s silence has been deafening. The government’s failure to secure Parachinar’s citizens and its alleged complicity in failing to tackle militant groups have fueled public outrage. The blocking of roads, the absence of effective security, and the lack of accountability for past incidents have left residents feeling abandoned by their country. Words of condemnation are insufficient to express the depth of loss in Parachinar. The brutal mass murder in Parachinar provides an acute example of the region's chronic challenges of sectarianism, official disinterest, and extremist brutality. Without accountability, this cycle of violence and sectarianism will continue to exist, putting more innocent lives in danger. It is serious that the state breaks its silence, addresses these systemic shortcomings, and prioritises the protection of every one of its citizens. We learned evacuation exercises in the following order: They instructed us to evacuate in an organised manner, with primary school children going first, followed by the middle and then upper grades. The exercises became a part of our daily routine, a sharp reminder of the vulnerability of life. However, the sense of normalcy was short-lived. Schools would often operate for a month, only to shut down for several months again as the violence escalated. Every trip felt like going to war. My family would bid farewell with prayers and tears, fearing they might not see me again. The journey from home to Peshawar or Islamabad was fraught with uncertainty One particular memory has stayed with me. When I was in the ninth grade, we were having a math exam and one of our greatest fears became reality - a missile struck our village mid-exam. It forced our teachers to evacuate us to a potato field nearly four to five kilometers away. Even after being evacuated, we sat on the ground and continued writing our papers. All the while the sounds of war kept growing closer, surrounding us. We completed our remaining exams in that field. As I grew older, the situation worsened. Roads leading to Parachinar became unsafe and were frequently closed. Visiting home became a perilous journey, undertaken only on Eid or other rare occasions. Every trip felt like going to war. My family would bid me farewell with prayers and tears, fearing they might not see me again. The journey from my home to Peshawar or Islamabad was always fraught with uncertainty. Families anxiously awaited updates until we reached our destinations in Peshawar or Islamabad, safe from the violence in the valley. From Diagnosis To Renewal: Finding Beauty In Struggle One of the most devastating incidents occurred in June 2017, when twin blasts on the 27th of Ramazan ripped through the valley. The bomb attack took place at RP Chowk just before the Iftar time as people prepared for Eid. As rescuers and bystanders rushed to help the victims of the first blast, a second blast occurred, resulting in over 100 deaths and 225 injuries. This tragedy was personal for me as I lost my cousin, Imtiaz Hussain — whom we called Zazi with affection and who worked at the AQH Hospital — who had rushed to help the injured after the first blast. He had rushed to save lives but ended up losing his own in the second blast. Parachinar’s story is one of resilience despite unimaginable suffering. Its people are tired of burying their loved ones and living in constant fear. Generations have grown up knowing nothing but violence, yet the people continue to demand peace and justice, refusing to retaliate with hatred. The region, rich in culture and history, has been left to suffer due to governmental negligence and insufficient efforts to bring lasting peace. Parachinar has been bleeding for over 17 years. Neglected by successive governments, the valley has witnessed countless dark episodes of terrorism, convoy attacks, land disputes, sectarian wars, and targeted blasts. Enough blood has been spilled. The people of Parachinar are tired of burying their loved ones. They deserve the right to live in safety, to dream of a future without fear, and to see an end to this cycle of violence. The time has come for the authorities to take some responsibility. It is also time for the authorities to prioritise development of Parachinar, from infrastructure, and education, to healthcare, and security to restore dignity and hope to the people of this valley. The government must ensure that the tragedies of the past are not repeated and that future generations can live in peace, free from the shadows of war and violence. Even Gwyneth Paltrow’s pals were shocked by the pictures of her getting hot and heavy with Timothée Chalamet. Jimmy Fallon brought up the viral photos during Paltrow’s appearance on “The Tonight Show” Thursday, asking what her family and friends thought of the headline-making moment. “Yeah, that was bad,” the 52-year-old joked as Fallon displayed a picture of the pair kissing on set of their new movie, “Marty Supreme.” In the photos, Chalamet, 28, pushed Paltrow up against a brick alleyway as they locked lips. “It’s just like, you’re trying to have this scene and you know it’s a private moment, and then there are paparazzi,” Paltrow explained. “It was like, all my mom group texts were like, ‘Oh my God!'” “They were on fire,” she added. “It was pretty funny.” The Josh Safdie-directed film was shot in New York City from September to October, marking the Oscar winner’s first time on a movie set in over five years. The Goop founder told Fallon that her 20-year-old daughter, Apple, and her brother, Jake, convinced her to return to the big screen. “My brother, who’s a filmmaker, was like ‘This is a great director and you should meet with him,’ and I did, and he was so nice,” she explained. “And when Apple found out Timothée Chalamet was in it, that sealed the deal.” However, Paltrow didn’t reveal her daughter’s reaction to the steamy makeout. The radio presenter was chosen for the majority of the trials, much to the dismay of many angered fans who thought other stars should have the opportunity to take part in the trials. Dean recently got his personal best when he collected 10 out of 12 stars in a Jack and the Screamstalk trial. On Tuesday night's episode of the show, the stars boarded the Fright Bus and were covered with gross critters. The likes of N-Dubz star Tulisa and Love Island's Maura Higgins were screaming in fear as they were showered with critters, viewers took to social media to claim Dean looked very calm. "Was it only me but was Dean NOT screaming in the bus trial and just getting on with it?" one user said. "He forgot his act for a moment, which means he was playing for screen time." Another viewer said: "Strange that Dean was hardly screaming on the fright bus." "Dean is extremely calm for someone who has spent the past week screaming during trials," one user commented and another said: "Funny how Dean wasn’t screaming on the bus?" Dean has been dividing opinions since joining the ITV show, but one of his radio co-stars jumped to his defence. "It was just a car that I took home, plugged in at night, got up the next morning — it was like having a gasoline station in the garage," he told NPR Member station Michigan Public in 2010. Trexler was one of the hundreds of people who got to drive an EV1 — the first modern, mass-produced electric vehicle from a major automaker. The little two-door car looked like a cross between a flying saucer and a computer mouse, and it pioneered technology you can still find in today's EVs. GM built just over 1,000 EV1s before ending production in 1999, spawning a community of passionate super fans eager to join the EV revolution. But the EV1 was controversial, and short-lived. It was on the road for less than a decade. Many Americans never knew the EV1 existed — and the fight to keep it alive ended with GM crushing nearly all the cars into scrap. "When it all happened, we just stood there and said, 'What are you guys doing?' " filmmaker and EV advocate Chris Paine told NPR in a 2006 interview about his documentary Who Killed the Electric Car? "The sight of seeing them destroyed before most people ever got to experience them was really quite a shocking moment for us." The story of the EV1 began in 1990, when California passed sweeping regulations aimed at curbing the state's air pollution. The plan mandated automakers build zero-emission vehicles. "It's a very radical strategy, but it's one that looks well into the next century," California Air Resources Board member Brian Bilbray said at the time. "And it's really going to set the standard for air-quality strategies, not in just this state or this nation, but in the world." Under pressure, automakers researched electric vehicles, hybrids and even hydrogen fuel cells to comply with the mandate. In 1992, reporter Paul Eisenstein was assigned by NPR to check out the early results, traveling to Arizona to test drive a GM prototype called the Impact. "As you turn the key, nothing seems to be happening — until you stomp on the Impact's accelerator," Eisenstein reported. "Then with a sudden lurch and an eerie whine, the Impact bursts to life, the speedometer ticking off five, 15, 30, 45 miles an hour." This is the car that by 1996 hit the market as the EV1. It had zippy acceleration, aerodynamic bodywork that partially covered the rear tires, and an innovative braking system that helped recharge the battery. "Regenerative braking works by using the motors — the drive motors — in reverse, and they act as generators," GM engineer Larry Oswald said. "So when you apply the brake pedal, essentially what you're doing is generating electricity and putting it back into the battery and storing it for the next acceleration." The car's battery could take you about 70 miles on a full charge. Battery technology improved over the years, increasing the EV1's range to about 100 miles. But the EV1 gave rise to a new consumer concern: "range anxiety." "The fear of being stranded; running out of power," Consumer Reports researcher Ron Conlin told NPR in 1997. "The anxiety of the consumer is reflected in our studies." The EV1 was only available in a few states. And it was expensive: The suggested retail price was $35,000 (more than $70,000 in today's money) but it never actually was for sale — it was only available for lease. "The car's being marketed to an upscale consumer — very educated, very affluent, as potentially a third vehicle in the household," Conlin said. Only about 800 drivers leased an EV1, according to an Associated Press article from 2005. However, reports indicated thousands more people put their name on a wait list. GM spokesperson Dave Barthmuss told NPR that the company followed up with those people, and found "less than 50 customers" on the wait list were willing to lease a vehicle. Many who did get the chance to lease an EV1 grew to love the way the car — with its plug-in charging and appliance-like charm — made them feel "like we were in the 21st century," said documentarian Chris Paine. GM had spent more than $1 billion on EV development. But over time, California weakened the mandate to build zero-emission vehicles. The EV1 became an unnecessary cost. The cars' three-year lease agreements expired in the early 2000s, but GM canceled the program and took its EV1s back. In 2005, NPR reporter Luke Burbank visited a GM facility in Southern California storing dozens of repossessed EV1s. The car's supporters held vigil outside. "We call that EV1 death row," said Chelsea Sexton, a former GM employee who worked on the EV1 program and was critical of the company's move to stop making electric vehicles. "It absolutely breaks my heart," Sexton told NPR. "I helped put these cars on the road in the first place, and now they're taking them away from me and from all the other drivers that had them at one point." GM loaded the EV1s onto semi trucks, hauled them to Mesa, Ariz., and crushed them. Photos showed flattened EV1s stacked on top of each other. GM said the cars were destroyed because a lack of replacement parts made the EV1 unsafe. "There are 2,000 unique parts to this vehicle," Barthmuss said. "Some of them are computer control modules that control the braking on the vehicle. If that part fails, there are some serious safety concerns." Twenty-five years after EV1 production ended, every major automaker is building EVs — including GM. In October the company said it's on track to build about 200,000 EVs this year. GM set a goal to phase out gas-powered vehicles by 2035. As for the EV1, some of the little cars escaped the crusher . In 2010, former EV1 driver Kris Trexler visited the very car he once plugged in to charge each night. It was in a new home: the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles — one of only 40 EV1s still intact, according to the museum . "Wow, this brings back some serious memories," Trexler said. "This is just amazing to see this car again."
