(AP) — Angel Yin was making putts from across the green and threatening to build a big lead until Jeeno Thitikul finished eagle-birdie for a 9-under 63 to share the lead Saturday going into the final round of the CME Group Tour Championship with $4 million on the line. Yin had a 69 after another day of big putts and one chip-in from some 60 feet for eagle on the par-5 sixth hole that put her comfortably ahead at Tiburon Golf Club. She holed a 30-footer on the eighth hole, another birdie from about 25 feet on the ninth hole and another one from the 30-foot range on the 12th. Thitikul seemed to be an afterthought until she lit it up on the back nine for a 30. The Thai started the back nine with three straight bogeys, but she made up quick ground at the end with her eagle on the reachable par-5 17th and a birdie on the closing hole. The birdie briefly gave her the lead until Yin made birdie on the 17th to join her. They were tied at 15-under 201, three shots head of Ruoning Yin, who birdied her last two for a 66. Ten members on the board responsible for determining what Texas’ 5.5 million public schoolchildren learn in the classroom voted to call on the Texas Legislature, which convenes in January, to pass a state law granting them authority to determine what books are appropriate for school-age children. Local school districts currently manage that process. Republican members said granting the board control would alleviate the state’s more than 1,200 public school districts of the burdensome task. They also said it could offer a solution to a recent court ruling stopping Texas from fully enforcing a state law requiring booksellers to rate their materials for appropriateness — based on books’ depictions or references to sex — before selling them to school libraries. “This board knows how to vet material. We have processes. We know how to do that. We can create a transparent process to do that work,” Florence Republican board member Tom Maynard said. “We’d get lots more emails, I know, but I think it’s work that ... really needs to be done.” The board, which has shifted further to the political right in recent years, will formally ask the Legislature to grant it “discretion to create rules, procedures and timelines” for the book review process and amend current state law, known as House Bill 900, to streamline the process, according to the recommendation proposed on Thursday. The proposal received immediate pushback from some of the board’s Democrats, who argued that the process should remain under the purview of local school districts. “They better understand their communities and know what their constituencies need and want rather than the State Board of Education,” said San Antonio Democrat Marisa B. Pérez-Diaz. “I think we’ve got a lot of bigger fish to fry.” Rebecca Bell-Metereau, a Democrat from San Marcos, questioned whether the board could handle what she considers “a Herculean task to read and rate all of these books.” “That seems just insane to me, even if we were paid — and we’re not,” Bell-Metereau said. Republican Aaron Kinsey, chair of the board, said the book review process could mirror how the body oversees instructional materials, an undertaking that includes using outside reviewers to help sort through school lessons. Evelyn Brooks, a Frisco Republican, said she supports establishing uniform guidelines for all school districts to follow when selecting books for their libraries. “They could have their own communities involved in what they want in their libraries, but the standard has been set to alleviate confusion,” Brooks said. “There is a lot of confusion at the board meetings, even though the law is very straightforward. It’s just been a very muddy area.” Under House Bill 900, books are considered “sexually relevant” if the material describes or portrays sexual activity and is part of the required school curriculum. Books are considered “sexually explicit” if the material describing or portraying sexual behavior is not part of the required curriculum and portrayed in a “patently offensive way,” defined by the state as going against “current community standards of decency.” Schools are required to remove “sexually explicit” books from library shelves, while students seeking to check out books with a “sexually relevant” rating require parental consent. Earlier this year, the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, one of the most conservative in the nation, blocked Texas from requiring booksellers to rate their materials. The court agreed, in part, that complying with the law would pose an undue economic burden on the vendors. The enforceable part of the law, however, still prohibits school libraries from acquiring or keeping “sexually explicit” materials on their bookshelves. But conservative advocates have still shown up to State Board of Education meetings in recent months to raise complaints about the presence of such materials in their school libraries and what they describe as inaction by local school districts. The discussion over what entities should control the book review process comes as Texas officials have sought to exert more control over what materials children are exposed to in public schools. The state has passed legislation limiting how schools can talk about America’s history of racism and its diversity, while proposing other bills to ban classroom instruction about sexual orientation and gender identity. Ahead of the legislative session, Rep. Jared Patterson of Frisco has already filed House Bill 183, a bill that would grant the State Board of Education its wish by giving the curriculum-setting body the authority to prohibit school districts from using library materials it considers “inappropriate” or “sexually explicit.” Texas banned 538 books during the 2023-24 school year, according to PEN America, an organization tracking bans throughout the country. More than half of the books outlawed across the U.S. included sex or sex-related topics and content, while 44% included characters or people of color. Thirty-nine percent included LGBTQ+ characters or people.

The Madden altcast will be streamed on Peacock with the main broadcast airing on NBC, beginning at 1 p.m. EST. It is the first time NBC has done an alternate broadcast of an NFL game. CBS has done at least one game on Nickelodeon since the 2020 season, while ESPN/ABC have the “ManningCast” as well as animated presentations featuring " The Simpsons " and " Toy Story." Amazon Prime Video also has “Prime Vision with Next Gen Stats” during “Thursday Night Football.” “It’s ironic that you want to make the video game as much as actual live play as possible and now you are doing the opposite of trying to make the real game look like the video game,” said Josh Helmrich, the NFL’s senior director of media and Next Gen Stats. The altcast on Peacock will blend video game elements — such as Madden 25 graphics, route trees, player cards, button icons on eligible receivers and player ratings — with live action. GenuisIQ will provide real-time data via the league’s Next Gen Stats. There will also be times when animations from the video game — such as touchdown celebrations — will be used instead of live action. NBC has used the “Sunday Night Football” games the last two weeks as test broadcasts to make sure all the technology was working as well as build cohesion in the studio in Stamford, Connecticut, with the announcers doing the game. Paul Burmeister will handle the play-by-play with Madden NFL expert Kurt Benkert and six-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Chad Ochocinco providing commentary. The traditional sideline camera will be used the most since that better shows route trees and other features most associated with the game. In an added twist, Ochocinco will be able to adjust a player’s rating depending on what happens during the game. The Texans (9-5) have clinched the AFC South while the AFC West champion Chiefs (13-1) are looking to remain the conference’s top seed. Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce were two of only six players to begin the season with 99 overall ratings in the Madden game. Houston’s highest-rated players in Madden are offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil (95) and running back Joe Mixon (93). Eleven players on the Texans and Chiefs rosters have a Madden rating above 90. The Madden altcast also takes on personal meaning for NBC Sports Executive Producer of NFL Fred Gaudelli, who was Madden’s producer during the final seven years of his broadcast career. Using a special combination of gizmos, the new self-lightening backpack can easily eliminate vertical inertial forces. According to experiments on a working prototype, the new design significantly reduces the effort a wearer needs to expend wearing it. This makes wearing the bag more comfortable and dramatically aids users who carry heavy loads over long distances. Typically, loads within backpacks have nowhere to go when put on someone’s back. The load will also move up and down as the person walks, putting more force on the user’s bag and legs, often making the bag feel heavier than it really is. To this end, the Chinese team led by Yanhe Zhu at the State Key Laboratory of Robotics and Systems at the Harbin Institute of Technology in China decided to see if they could engineer a solution. Rise of the self-lightening backpack “A backpack capable of counteracting vertical forces addresses a real pain point for many people who carry heavy loads during commuting, hiking, or running,” says Zhu. “A product that can reduce this burden while enhancing comfort and flexibility would likely be very appealing,” he added. While other self-lightening or weight-dampening backpacks (aka “floating”) exist, they typically rely on motors that add weight and require a power source . Zhu’s team, however, has managed to develop another method that requires no additional power beyond the user’s locomotion. Called the quasi-zero stiffness and controlled damping backpack , this new backpack uses a set of symmetrical constant-force mechanisms composed of springs and rotating rods. It also features other parts, like an electromagnetic motor, to prevent contents from hitting the bag structure. These parts work to counteract up or down movements of loads within the backpack, generating enough power for the electromagnetic motor to kick in. The back also features a self-learning matching learning to help guide and control the system. “As a result, only the microcontroller needs to be powered to control the [device’s transistors], while no additional electrical energy is required for the motor,” says Zhu. This, he notes, also happens to be more energy-efficient than actively powered motors. To test the design, the team recruited volunteers to wear regular and new backpacks on a treadmill. They then monitor their metabolic rates as they walk at varying speeds. Coming to a store near you soon, hopefully They found that the new design reduced wearer energy expenditure by 11% over regular backpacks. The tests also found that the loads within the new backpacks barely moved relative to the ground. So much so that movement speeds of loads (up or down) were slashed by 85% compared to common-or-garden backpacks. “Additionally, when the user’s back bends, the system dynamically adjusts the load’s movement to prevent it from colliding with the end of the sliding rail,” added Zhu . Zhu also believes this new bag would prove very popular if it ever went to market. To this end, he and his team actively seek ways to commercialize the design. “Our next steps will involve integrating intelligent algorithms to enable the suspension backpack to adapt to a broader range of movement patterns, such as jumping,” said Zhu. Moving forward, Zhu and his team are also exploring energy recovery while using the motor in power-generation mode to regulate the load’s motion. In its audit of the province’s consolidated financial statements, the auditor general made recommendations to the Ministries of Technology and Innovation, Children and Family Services (CFS), and Seniors, Community and Social Services (SCSS) to improve network security procedures after finding the departments failed to promptly remove ex-employees access privileges. For both CFS and SCSS, the auditor found that terminated employees retained access to IT applications. Previous reports in 2014 and 2020 made the same recommendation to tighten controls for department information systems, and the auditor said it is repeating that direction because it continues to find “user access exceptions.” “Unauthorized individuals may access the department’s systems and be able to use or change critical personal, business, and financial information. This could result in privacy breaches for the department or create opportunities for identity theft. If information in the financial systems was manipulated, this could impair the integrity of the department’s financial reporting and results,” the auditor general’s report warns. Within Information and Technology, the auditor tested 25 sample accounts, and found 13 of these accounts weren’t removed from the network. Five of the 13 accounts “were used to log into the government’s network after the account holders’ employment ended with government.” Department management verified that the users “mainly accessed their own employment data.” An additional 48 ex-employees held on to logins for 11 departmental IT applications, resulting in one unauthorized access to an IT system. The audit also found the department didn’t complete effective reviews of user access rights for 12 of its IT applications, including three where no review was performed during the 2023-24 audit period. Jonathan Gauthier, press secretary to the Ministry of Technology and Innovation, said the department is working to implement the network security recommendations. “Alberta’s government takes security seriously and is committed to continuous improvement to ensure better user experience and provide common, secure, and streamlined access to government services,” Gauthier said. Many of the concerns outlined in the report have already been addressed, Gauthier said. Contractor accounts are set to be automatically terminated at the end of the contract period, and as of spring 2024, employee account removal has been aligned with payroll termination processes. “The existing Access Controls policy has been updated to increase the frequency of reviews of user account access; from annually to quarterly,” he said. “Technology and Innovation is also developing a tool to track compliance to the policy and provide regular reporting. This is expected to be rolled out in the upcoming months. Further improvements to the periodic review of users’ access rights are underway and will be implemented over the coming years.”

It started when Umanmielen left the sideline in the waning seconds of a 24-17 loss to the Gators . He was walking toward the visiting locker room when at least one fan yelled at him from the stands. Umanmielen clearly didn't like what he heard and made his way toward the seats. Officers quickly stepped in and escorted Umanmielen back toward the locker room. They then walked him directly to the team's waiting busses, but more fans were in the path and shouted at him again. Umanmielen turned and started toward the fans before officers stepped in and stopped him. It was the latest bit of oddness for Umanmielen, who wore an orange Gators ski mask through Ole Miss' practice facility late in the week. He finished the game with seven tackles, including a sack. Chandrababu Naidu was keen on transforming the State into a technological hub. Addressing the valedictory session of a two-day research scholar summit, organised by the SRM University-AP, he said 153 services were proposed to be launched under the WhatsApp governance initiative by the State government. “Ideas like these demonstrate how technological advancements benefit governance and thereby the society,” he said. Representatives of 27 universities from across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana States participated and a total of 243 abstracts were submitted. The two-day summit delved into four major themes — Engineering and Technology, Medicine, Life Sciences, Agriculture and Fisheries, Management, Social Sciences, Humanities and Applied Sciences, including Computational Physics. SRM University-AP Vice-Chancellor Manoj K. Arora urged the students to use platforms like this to exchange ideas and for career progression. Speaking about the achievements of the university, he said within seven-and-half years of its inception, the institution had established its presence on the scientific landscape. He urged the research scholars participating in the event to give priority to use their research for finding solutions to the problems existing in the society. The best research papers were given 18 gold medals and 14 silver medals besides several special mention awards across various categories for exemplary contributions. Dr. Sibendu Samanta, Jatis Kumar Dash and Manikanta Bandlamudi were the convenors at the event.
