The "Market & Promotion" covers various marketplaces including the Pop Market which will bring a selection of products from over 140 brands, second-hand markets and local community markets to support businesses affected by the floods in October. Visit chiangmaidesignweek.com .New Jersey gubernatorial candidates offered various reactions to the mysterious drone sightings over the Garden State . Why It Matters Recent drone sightings across New Jersey and other eastern states have sparked concerns, as little information about what they may be has been made public. The Federal Bureau of Investigation ( FBI ) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) assured Americans in a statement last Thursday that there was "no evidence" that the sightings pose a public safety or security threat or have a foreign origin. The sightings come as the race to replace New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy is 11 months out . The sightings present an opportunity for both Democratic and Republican candidates to show how they might lead the state in a potential crisis. Historically, whichever party isn't holding the presidency does well in New Jersey's gubernatorial elections, giving Democrats optimism about holding the office next year, but the state shifted to the right in this year's elections, with President-elect Donald Trump losing it by only about 6 percentage points. What to Know Both Democrats and Republicans running in New Jersey's governor race have commented on the drones. In a statement on Monday, Representative Mikie Sherrill, a Democrat who has led early primary polls, released a "drone plan of action" to locate and track drones flying over the state, increase information available to police and increase communications about the drones with Garden State residents. She wrote that she is "incredibly frustrated with the lack of coordination and communication from agencies" amid the sightings. "Right now, our leaders need to be acting in accordance with a unified plan, and speaking with one voice in order to protect our national security, keep New Jerseyans safe, and ensure state and local authorities have the information and tools they need to take action," she said. Last week, Representative Josh Gottheimer, another Democrat running for governor, urged the FBI and DHS to allow state and local law enforcement to take down the drones safely. "New Jersey cannot become the wild west for drone activity — and Americans shouldn't have to worry about what's flying overhead, especially as technology like AI advances at an unprecedented clip," Gottheimer said in a statement. He also told reporters on Monday that the state needs a "proper system to track the activity" as residents "shouldn't have to worry about what's overhead." Jack Ciattarelli, the Republican leading early primary polls, told Fox News last week that he was "very, very fearful" that somebody could "take matters into their own hands." "You can't tell me with the resources we have available to us in New Jersey, McGuire Air Force Base, Fort Dix, Coast Guard, International Guard, the most well-equipped police force in the country, that we can't get answers? This is ridiculous," he said, criticizing Murphy and the White House for taking what he views as a "laissez-faire" approach to the drones. Newsweek reached out to each of the politicians' campaigns for comment via email. What People Are Saying Others have also responded to the drone sightings. Governor Phil Murphy on X: "Tonight I met with @NJSP officials and radar technicians at the Regional Operations & Intelligence Center who are surveying the area for unmanned aircraft systems. The public deserves clear answers — we will keep pushing the federal government for more information and resources." President-elect Donald Trump during a press conference: "The government knows what is happening. Our military knows where they took off from. If it's a garage they can go right into that garage. They know where it came from and where it went. For some reason, they don't want to comment. I think they'd be better off saying what it is. Our military know,s and our president knows." The FBI previously told Newsweek : "The FBI is aware of reported sightings of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)—commonly referred to as drones—observed flying in multiple locations over the past several weeks. The FBI remains engaged with our federal, state, local, and tribal partners to share information and protect the public." New York Governor Kathy Hochul, in a statement : " In response to my calls for additional resources, our federal partners are deploying a state-of-the-art drone detection system to New York State." What Happens Next Pressure for officials to disclose more information about the drones is expected to continue over the coming days, while speculation about where the drones are coming from may continue growing in the absence of definitive information. Federal law enforcement has maintained that the drones do not pose a threat to the public.Gotham has Batman, but New York wants Robin. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said this weekend that the Department of Homeland Security should send special drone-detection technology made by Robin Radar Systems to New York and New Jersey following a series of mysterious sightings. > Watch NBC Bay Area News 📺 Streaming free 24/7 If the technology exists for a drone to make it up into the sky, there certainly is the technology that can track the craft with precision and determine what the heck is going on,” Schumer told reporters on Sunday. Schumer said he is requesting Robin’s equipment in part because it uses “not a linear line of sight, but 360-degree technology that has a much better chance of detecting these drones.” In recent years, the Netherlands-based Robin Radar Systems has risen in prominence, though its hardware is not only used to track down drones. Robin is part of a consortium developing small radar satellites that can measure water levels, according to the Netherlands Space Office. In February, the company also deployed four bird-detection radars to support the creation of what has been billed as the world’s most ecological wind farm in the Dutch part of the North Sea. Follow along for live coverage In early October 2023, Robin announced it had joined a group of organizations working on the development of the world’s most advanced weather radar , known as PHARA. The group’s mission is to “develop a fully 3D weather radar that can accurately track the movement and growth process of cloud particles and large-scale weather fronts.” “Detecting small objects is what we do, and it’s what we do best,” the company says on its website. “Bird, bat, or drone, our 360° radar systems log thousands of observations, scanning every second to track and classify with precision.” Robin’s systems have been used in at least one notable military context, too. In early August, the Dutch Ministry of Defense announced it had purchased 51 drone radars from the company and planned to donate them to Ukraine as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s forces attempt to fend off Russia’s aerial assault. In a news release announcing the purchase, Robin explained that “traditional radar systems are typically stationary, mounted on fixed platforms like buildings or tripods.” But the Robin-produced radar systems have “on-the-move” functionality, allowing them to “perform even when mounted on mobile objects, like vehicles or ships.” “Robin’s 3D drone detection radars ... are designed with the explicit purpose of detecting small, fast and elusive drones,” the company said. The deployment of Robin technology could come as a relief to residents in the New York and New Jersey areas who have been rattled by the bright, unidentified flying objects hovering above their homes almost every night for weeks. The objects have appeared in the sky since at least Nov. 18. It remains unclear who is operating the devices. The Pentagon has insisted the objects are not owned by the military. In an interview with NBC News on Monday, Robin Radar Systems general manager Kristian Brost said the company’s radars can detect a drone in the sky, but “we can’t tell you who’s flying it [or] what country it’s from.” Schumer’s request to Homeland Security came two days after New York Stewart International Airport was closed following multiple drone sightings nearby. The Democratic lawmaker told reporters it was “remarkable” that “we have more questions than answers” amid a growing number of mysterious sightings. “Some of the drones are small. Some of the drones’ flight patterns are erratic,” Schumer said. “Multiple drones flying together can confuse a traditional radar system, and that’s why, again, this new technology can really get us the answers that we need.” Schumer said he was working to pass a bill that would give local law enforcement “more tools for drone detection.” Currently, only federal agencies have the legal authority to scour for drones. The Democratic lawmaker’s office did not immediately respond to an email Monday requesting more information. New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy, meanwhile, said on X late Sunday that he had met with state police officials and radar technicians who are “surveying the area for unmanned aircraft systems.” “The public deserves clear answers — we will keep pushing the federal government for more information and resources,” Murphy said. U.S. president-elect Donald Trump says he told Canadian hockey legend Wayne Gretzky during a Christmas Day visit that he should run for prime minister of Canada. “I just left Wayne Gretzky, ‘The Great One’ as he is known in ice-hockey circles,” Trump posted on his Truth Social platform Wednesday afternoon. “I said, ‘Wayne, why don’t you run for prime minister of Canada, soon to be known as the governor of Canada — you would win easily, you wouldn’t even have to campaign.’ He had no interest,” Trump wrote. His comment about being governor of Canada refers to Trump repeatedly suggesting the country become a U.S. state, which Ottawa insists is a joke. Trump added that it would be “fun to watch” if Canadians launched a movement to get the retired hockey player to seek office. The Canadian Press has tried to contact Gretzky through his agents. Experts have said that Ottawa is rightfully focused on the prospect of damaging tariffs under the looming Trump presidency instead of pushing back on rhetoric about annexing or purchasing Canada. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau leads a minority government that could be toppled by a confidence vote next year, following the surprise resignation of finance minister Chrystia Freeland. Trump also expressed Christmas greetings to Trudeau, again referring to him as a governor and claiming that Canadians would see a tax cut of more than 60 per cent if the country became an American state. “Their businesses would immediately double in size, and they would be militarily protected like no other country anywhere in the world,” Trump wrote in a post that also alluded to his desire to annex Greenland and the Panama Canal. Gretzky has previously backed Conservative politicians, such as former Ontario Progressive Conservative leader Patrick Brown during his run for the party leadership. During the 2015 federal election, Conservative leader Stephen Harper interviewed Gretzky in front of hundreds of supporters as the Tories unsuccessfully sought re-election. At the event, Gretzky told Harper he thought he had been an “unreal prime minister” who had been “wonderful to the whole country.” Gretzky later said he always follows a prime minister’s request, regardless of political stripe, noting he had once hosted a lunch for former Liberal prime minister Pierre Trudeau.Minnesota firearms deer harvest remains above 2023 after third weekend, DNR says

Dwight Howard's relationship with the Lakers took an unexpected turn when he discovered his former agent had deceived him about a $7 million contract offer in 2020. During a recent episode of his Above the Rim with DH12 podcast, Howard and Lakers owner Jeanie Buss finally cleared the air about his departure. "I wanted to come back. I don't know what had happened," Howard explained, to which Buss replied, "You took an offer from the Philadelphia 76ers." Howard shook his head, revealing a darker truth: "No, I think that we were just told so many different things. I think now, looking back on it, with the situation that I had with my agent, you know, actually getting convicted, being a part of the whole crime—" Ron Chenoy-Imagn Images The agent in question, Charles Briscoe, was convicted of defrauding Howard through an elaborate scheme involving the attempted purchase of the WNBA's Atlanta Dream. Along with businessman Calvin Darden Jr. , Briscoe convinced Howard to invest $7 million in what turned out to be a shell company. The scam involved false promises of partnerships with celebrities like Tyler Perry and Issa Rae, along with companies like Starbucks. Howard only discovered the fraud when he saw on ESPN that someone else had purchased the Dream. "So, like, I don't even know what the truth was, because what I was told was that you guys didn't have an offer for me," Howard told Buss. "Oh no, that's not true," Buss quickly corrected. The timing of Briscoe's deception proved costly for Howard's Lakers future. "It's all about the salary cap and the timing, because we have to get accepted offers when we have the cap space," Buss explained, suggesting Briscoe deliberately let the Lakers' opportunity slip away. The consequences have been severe. Briscoe faces wire fraud charges carrying maximum 20-year sentences, plus aggravated identity theft charges. Meanwhile, Darden received 11-14 years for fraud, bank fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy convictions in January 2024. On October 14th, 2024, Howard shared the podcast clip on social media, writing: "I was so shocked to hear the Lakers had an offer for me but my so called agent told me lies same agent that cost me $7mill man I'm glad me & Jeanie cleared that up I know it's too late but why not..." Counting will commence at 8 am on Saturday in Digras, where Shiv Sena and Congress are the dominant political parties, along with 287 Assembly seats in Maharashtra. The seat witnessed 75.71% turnout on November 20. Local issues such as infrastructure development, water scarcity and agricultural challenges shaped the voter sentiment, making the outcome in Digras important not just for the assembly seat, but as a potential indicator of broader electoral trends in the state as well. The contest in Digras, a general category constituency, had garnered huge attention, with two prominent leaders — Sanjay Rathod from the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and senior Congress leader Manikrao Govindrao Thakre — vying for control. Sanjay Rathod, a prominent Shiv Sena leader and the current MLA for Digras, sought re-election for a third consecutive term. He has built a strong reputation due to his grassroots connections and influence in the Yavatmal district. Rathod, representing the Shiv Sena faction led by Eknath Shinde, was focusing his campaign on continuing development projects and addressing agricultural issues — a top concern in this largely rural constituency. On the other hand, Manikrao Govindrao Thakre, a senior Congress leader, was also contesting the seat, adding competition to the race. Thakre, who previously served as an MLA from the nearby Darwha constituency, was a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from 1985 to 2004.

It’s been a rough couple of years for the Territory. In fact, the past decade has been a bit of a battle. An economy stuck in neutral, spiralling public debt, rising crime and social dysfunction and a series of underwhelming governments have combined to leave the Territory on struggle street. There’s perhaps no better indicator of our plight than Darwin house prices. At its peak in May 2014, Darwin’s median house price was a tick over $645,000. More than 10 years on – and even with the benefit of an artificial spike driven by a temporarily shifting population and record low interests rates during Covid - that median house price has gone backwards by about 10 per cent. Today it sits at just over $580,000. For those who bought at or around the peak, it means they’ve spent a decade with little, no, or even negative equity in their most significant asset. Aerial view of Darwin's Waterfront Precinct. That factor alone can have a devastating impact on the local economy, drying up discretionary spending and in the process making it more difficult for businesses to turn a decent profit. Our net interstate migration, which has reached record lows in the past two years, would perhaps be worse if not for the fact so many people would be forced to sell their home at a loss if they wanted to up stumps and leave. But as we head into 2025, could there finally be cause for some optimism? Could this be the year we finally turn the corner? Real estate agents are not a traditionally reliable source of information when assessing the future prospects of a housing market, but many are quietly talking about a recent uptick that has the potential to continue. It’s being driven by many things, among them the fact that our housing market has fallen so far it now represents outstanding value to studious investors. You can buy an established home in Darwin for a price significantly less than what it costs to build a new one, and that’s before you add the cost of the land. But there are also signs the economy is turning. Gas from the Barossa field will be exported to Darwin LNG via a new export pipeline tied into the existing Bayu-Darwin Pipeline. Supplied Next year will see Santos process the first gas from its Barossa field at the Darwin LNG plant. After fighting off a series of legal challenges, Barossa will be full steam ahead in 2025, delivering 350 permanent jobs in the Top End for the next 20 years, with an estimated $2.5 billion worth of wages and contracts expected to flow for Territorians. Empire Energy and Tamboran Resources are expecting to produce their first gas from the Beetaloo Basin by the end of 2025. This will help keep out lights on in the short-term and has the potential to create thousands of jobs and provide much-needed royalties for the NT Government. Interestingly, Santos has had a recent change of heart on its position in relation to the Beetaloo. Tamboran Resources Shenandoah South Pilot Project site amid the vast Beetaloo Basin in the Northern Territory. Speaking at an Energy Club lunch in Darwin in February, Santos CEO Kevin Gallagher said the uncertain regulatory framework in Australia and the company’s bruising legal battles when trying to develop Barossa meant it was unlikely to pursue development in the Beetaloo any time soon. “Until we tighten up the (regulations) until approval means approval, it’s very difficult to see (investment),” he said. “Would I be throwing a lot of capital into the Beetaloo right now? Not on your Nellie because I don’t know when I’m ever going to get a return on it.” But a changing political landscape and a growing acceptance that there is no renewable energy future without gas playing a significant role has Santos singing from a different song sheet. “We’re looking to actually do some further appraisal in 2026 and we’re really excited about just how supportive the new Northern Territory government is to actually exploiting these opportunities,” Santos executive vice president Brett Darley said following the company’s Darwin board meeting earlier this month. “This is a fantastic resource for us.” Diggers on parade at Robertson Barracks. Picture GLENN CAMPBELL Darwin will also benefit from a shift in Defence resources. The Australian Army’s 7RAR has just returned to Darwin to rejoin 5RAR after a decade in Adelaide. Significant upgrades continue at Robertson Barracks and Tindal Air Base, and next year Japanese troops will join US Marines for training exercises in the Top End. All of this could mean the Territory’s economic prospects will finally show some improvement in 2025. This might be an overly optimistic view. But if your glass isn’t half full at the start of the year, when will it be? Here’s to better days ahead.
