Local dignitaries and volunteers were all hands on deck Monday morning in a small lot right behind the Santa Clarita Valley Food Pantry ready to give away hundreds of turkeys and chickens to food-insecure clients just days ahead of Thanksgiving. A total of 700 turkeys and chickens were distributed to residents from the Santa Clarita Valley, Acton and Agua Dulce areas from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Many of the clients waiting to get their hands on a turkey or chicken began to form a line outside the local food bank as early as 7:30 a.m., said Joanna Ainsworth, executive director for the SCV Food Pantry, as she was tackling many small tasks throughout the morning from communicating with the clients, to directing volunteers where to go, all to ensure the giveaway ran smoothly. The turkeys and chickens were made possible by numerous local donations including the SCV Rotary Club, which donated 350 of the birds, as well as the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, which donated 200, and 125 purchased by the pantry itself with a $5,000 Macy’s grant, Ainsworth said. “I’m excited about this,” Ainsworth said. This year, Ainsworth aimed to make sure there was a system in place so clients who visit the food bank frequently would be prioritized during the Thanksgiving turkey giveaway, she said, and with all the planning and logistics, she was filled with gratitude toward the men working at Brian Clark’s Engine Dynamics, an auto repair shop right next door who allowed the SCV Food Pantry to use the small lot to distribute the food. SCV Food Pantry client Debbie Breen was overcome with emotion as she walked off with a chicken and a few other goodies she planned to enjoy on Thanksgiving Day in her home, located just a few blocks away from the local food bank. “I’m delighted,” she said softly. “I’m especially delighted that so many people that this has helped. Social Security is my only income and my rent is so high and [continues] to go up .... Food is becoming more and more difficult to acquire. This is literally life-saving for so many people. It makes a huge difference.” Breen was excited to enjoy cooking her chicken and spread the holiday cheer with tenants in her building, she said. “My family is my three dogs, and there are a couple of other tenants in my building that I am going to share with,” Breen said. SCV Rotary President Scoot Hoolahan was present with numerous volunteers from the local nonprofit and helped restock the birds toward the front where they were being distributed. “I think so many of us take it for granted that we’re going to have a turkey on our table on Thanksgiving,” he said as he became emotional and had to take a moment to collect himself. “There’s families where that’s not a given.”‘I’m not a quitter’: Mettam responds to ‘catastrophic’ polling that suggests Zempilas should be Liberal leader
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said he was caught off guard by reports early Tuesday that linebacker Shaq Barrett wants to unretire. The two-time Super Bowl winner signed a one-year deal with the Dolphins in March, then abruptly announced his retirement on social media in July, just days before the start of Miami’s training camp. “Just to be candid, obviously there’s a reason why you target and sign somebody,” McDaniel said Tuesday afternoon. “I was fully caught off guard, or caught by surprise this morning as I found out.” McDaniel indicated the Dolphins have not had any conversations with Barrett recently. Miami holds the 32-year-old’s contractual rights. ESPN first reported the news. “It was kind of news as you guys got it,” McDaniel said. He also said he hasn’t had a chance to think about Barrett potentially rejoining the team, and that his immediate focus is on Miami’s Thursday night game at Green Bay. “The team is counting on me to think about the Packers,” he said. “I’ll get with (GM) Chris (Grier), and we’ll work through that. There’s a ton of implications that go along with it in terms of team and roster stuff, so we’ll work through that as we just got the news today.” Barrett has 400 tackles, 59 sacks, 22 forced fumbles and three interceptions in nine seasons — four with Denver and five with Tampa Bay. He was a second-team All-Pro with the Buccaneers in 2019, with a league-high 19 1/2 sacks. The AP Top 25 college football poll is back every week throughout the season! Dolphins waive veteran safety The Dolphins waived veteran safety Marcus Maye on Tuesday and activated rookie safety Patrick McMorris from injured reserve. Maye, who signed with the Dolphins in June, played in 11 games with three starts for Miami this season. He had 30 tackles and a tackle for loss. He could re-sign to the team’s practice squad if he clears waivers. Maye previously played for New Orleans, but was cut in a money-saving move in March after two seasons with the Saints. Maye’s release made room on the roster for McMorris, who was drafted in the sixth round by Miami in April. He began the season on injured reserve because of a calf injury. ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nflCARSON, Calif. — The LA Galaxy finished 26th in the 29-team Major League Soccer standings just one season ago, and their biggest supporters boycotted certain matches to protest a decade of poor performance. The most successful club in league history seemed light years away from its luminous prime. When the Galaxy raised the MLS Cup again Saturday amid confetti and fireworks, their spectacular transformation was complete. In only one year, a team that was profoundly lost had rediscovered its peerless championship pedigree. "We won this trophy, and it's finally back where it belongs," striker Dejan Joveljic said. Joseph Paintsil and Joveljic scored in the first half, and the Galaxy won their record sixth MLS Cup championship with a 2-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls. After striking twice in the first 13 minutes of the final, the Galaxy nursed their lead through a scoreless second half to raise their league's biggest trophy for the first time since 2014. MLS' most successful franchise struggled through most of the ensuing years, but everything changed after LA spent smartly in the offseason to build a high-scoring new lineup topped by Paintsil, Joveljic and Gabriel Pec. The Galaxy finished second in the Western Conference and streaked through the postseason with an MLS playoff-record 18 goals in five games to win another crown. "I'm just so proud of this group after the challenges that we (had) and the way they bounced back and competed as a group," Galaxy coach Greg Vanney said. "We spent a lot of energy at the start, but I'm just so proud of these guys. They've cemented themselves as legends in this club." The Galaxy even won this title without perhaps their most important player. Riqui Puig, the playmaking midfielder from Barcelona who ran their offense impressively all season long, tore a ligament in his knee last week in the conference final. Puig watched this game in a suit, but the Catalan catalyst's teammates hadn't forgotten him: After his replacement, Gastón Brugman, set up LA's opening goal with a superb pass in the ninth minute, Paintsil held up Puig's jersey to their roaring fans during the celebration. "I was really waiting for this moment," said Paintsil, who scored his 14th goal of an impressive season. "I'm much more, 10 times faster than them, and Gaston saw the space. ... It was really a good thing. We did it for Riqui, and we did it for our family that came, and our supporters." Just four minutes later, Joveljic sprinted past four New York defenders and chipped home his 21st goal. Brugman was named the MLS Cup MVP after a commanding performance in midfield. The Uruguayan hadn't started a match for the Galaxy since Oct. 5 after an injury-slowed season, playing only as a postseason substitute before the final. "I dreamed of that yesterday, of something I could give to the team," Brugman said of his pass to Paintsil. "Today, it happened." Sean Nealis scored for the seventh-seeded Red Bulls, whose improbable postseason charge ended one win shy of their first Cup championship. With the league's youngest roster, New York fell just short of becoming the lowest-seeded team to win the tournament under first-year German coach Sandro Schwarz. "I love these guys," Schwarz said. "Some guys, they are crying. In the big picture, that's a start. Sometimes when you lose the final, it's tough, but you use this experience to create the next energy, the next intensity." Galaxy goalkeeper John McCarthy made four saves to win his second MLS title in three seasons, but Nealis beat the 2022 MLS Cup MVP in the 28th minute when he volleyed from the penalty area. The second half was lively: Red Bulls captain Emil Forsberg hit the outside of the post in the 72nd minute, while Pec and Galaxy substitute Marco Reus nearly converted chances a few moments later. The ball got loose in the Galaxy's penalty area in the third minute of extra time, but two Red Bulls couldn't finish. After Galaxy owner Phil Anschutz received the MLS Cup that bears his name because of his steady financial support of the league during its shaky years, Galaxy captain Maya Yoshida carried the trophy to his teammates for the celebration. The Galaxy extended their lead over DC United (4) for the most MLS Cup championships in league history. The Red Bulls remain one of three original MLS franchises never to win the title, along with FC Dallas and the New England Revolution. The Galaxy finished 17-0-3 this season at their frequently renamed suburban stadium, where the sellout crowd of 26,812 for the final included several robust cheering sections of Red Bulls supporters hoping to see their New Jersey-based club's breakthrough. But this season was about the Galaxy's rebirth. The club famous for employing global stars from David Beckham and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to Robbie Keane and Javier "Chicharito" Hernández swiftly turned itself into a contender again by acquiring young talents without international fame. The Galaxy signed Pec from Brazil and grabbed Paintsil, a Ghanaian playing in Belgium. The duo combined with Joveljic to form a potent attack with orchestration from Puig, one of MLS' best players. "Losing a guy like Riqui after the performance he put in all season was devastating," McCarthy said. "Even if he wasn't on the field, we did it for him."‘Absolute garbage’: Customer tests $299 Ninja SLUSHi and $199 Costco Iceman slushie machine with Crush soda. Which is better?

Ravens LB Roquan Smith inactive vs. Chargers(Reuters) – U.S. President-elect Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron shared an intense series of handshakes on Saturday, reminiscent of the white-knuckled grip-off that marked a meeting between the two leaders more than seven years ago. Visiting Paris to attend the reopening of the Notre-Dame cathedral, Trump was greeted by Macron at the steps of the Elysee Palace. It was Trump’s first foreign trip since winning the Nov. 5 U.S. election. Exiting his vehicle, Trump pulled Macron’s right hand towards his body as the two hugged and gripped each other with clenched fists, shaking firmly back and forth. While friendly, it appeared both men were holding on tight. As they ascended the steps of the palace and turned again towards the cameras, Trump positioned his hand above Macron’s and pushed down firmly as they locked hands for a second time. The sequence triggered approval from some Trump supporters online, who saw in the president-elect’s actions a concerted attempt to intimidate Macron. “President Trump is back to dominating world leaders with his handshake,” an account who goes by the username @BehizyTweets posted on the social media platform X. “Macron is going to need a hand massage after all that twisting and pulling Trump did to him.” The two men have a history of intense handshakes. When they met for the first time in May 2017 ahead of a NATO summit in Brussels, each man gripped each other’s right hand so firmly that their knuckles turned white and their jaws seemed to clench as they sat for a face-to-face meeting. Macron told a newspaper in 2017 that the white-knuckle handshake was “not innocent” and “a moment of truth” aimed at showing his U.S. counterpart, whose first term ended in January 2021, that he would not be intimidated. Trump and Macron were joined later on Saturday by Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. The meeting occurred with world leaders in Paris to celebrate Notre-Dame’s restoration five years after it was ravaged by fire. Trump and Macron shared another firm and prolonged handshake outside the cathedral, though it fell short of the intensity of the 2017 grip-off, according to social media influencer Collin Rugg. “The handshake battle between Donald Trump and Emmanuel Macron continues,” Rugg posted on X. “Their handshake at the Notre Dame Cathedral lasted for 17 seconds, coming short of their previous record of 29 seconds.”Econometer: What are you thankful for about the economy?

Starting on Jan. 1, 2025, the city of Moline plans to hire six new firefighters/paramedics with the intention of staffing a third ambulance in the city. This will be the first major staffing increase for the department in more than 40 years. According to a city press release, an additional ambulance will help reduce response times, improve service and ease the workload faced by current staff. Moline Fire Chief Steve Regenwether said that his top priority is the safety and well-being of the community and his staff. “Adding six additional firefighters to staff a full-time third ambulance is not just a necessity; it’s a commitment to the people of Moline. With over 90% of our 9,100 annual calls being EMS-related, ensuring prompt emergency response can be the difference between life and death for our citizens. At the same time, this addition will alleviate the strain on our current firefighters, improving their safety and morale,” Regenwether said in the press release. People are also reading...
