Agartala, Dec 30 (PTI) A six-member team of National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) Ltd carried out a study for the revival of Dumbur hydroelectric project in Tripura's Gomati district, an official said on Monday. The northeastern state's lone hydroelectric project commissioned in 1984 suffered serious damage due to the unprecedented flood in September this year. FREDERICTON — Some nasty weather is headed toward parts of the Maritimes over the next few days, bringing with it a mix of freezing rain, rain and snow. Environment Canada said Fredericton could see freezing rain Sunday, followed by rain and a mix of rain and snow late on New Year’s Day. Temperatures in the region could possibly climb to 8 C on Monday with the mercury dropping down to -6 C on New Year’s Eve night. The forecast for Charlottetown includes periods of freezing drizzle for Sunday and then rain until the end of the year, with temperatures going up to 8 C. Halifax is also expected to see periods of drizzle and rain through to New Year’s Day, with the mercury set to reach 8 C on New Year’s Eve. Darin Borgel, a meteorologist for Environment Canada, said the entire northeastern areas are going to see “a bit of a warm up” for a few days. But the temperatures are above normal for this time of year, he said. The land mass is “quite cold” while the ocean is “still quite warm” and that contrast brings these changing weather and temperature patterns, he said. “Our winters are normally very, very changeable like that. WASHINGTON — The FBI should have done more to gather intelligence before the Capitol riot, according to a watchdog report Thursday that also said no undercover FBI employees were on the scene on Jan. 6, 2021, and that none of the bureau's informants was authorized to participate. The report from the Justice Department inspector general's office knocks down a fringe conspiracy theory advanced by some Republicans in Congress that the FBI played a role in instigating the events that day, when rioters determined to overturn Republican Donald Trump's 2020 election loss to Democrat Joe Biden stormed the building in a violent clash with police. The review, released nearly four years after a dark chapter in history that shook the bedrock of American democracy, was narrow in scope, but aimed to shed light on gnawing questions that have dominated public discourse, including whether major intelligence failures preceded the riot and whether the FBI in some way provoked the violence. He told lawmakers in 2021 that the report was disseminated though the joint terrorism task force, discussed at a command post in Washington and posted on an internet portal available to other law enforcement agencies. "We did communicate that information in a timely fashion to the Capitol Police and (Metropolitan Police Department) in not one, not two, but three different ways," Wray said at the time. But there was no indication the FBI told northern Virginia police about the information, the report said. Bob Casey of Pennsylvania conceded his reelection bid to Republican David McCormick on Thursday, as a statewide recount showed no signs of closing the gap and his campaign suffered repeated blows in court in its effort to get potentially favorable ballots counted. Casey’s concession comes more than two weeks after Election Day, as a grindingly slow ballot-counting process became a spectacle of hours-long election board meetings, social media outrage, lawsuits and accusations that some county officials were openly flouting the law. Republicans had been claiming that Democrats were trying to steal McCormick’s seat by counting “illegal votes.” Casey’s campaign had accused of Republicans of trying to block enough votes to prevent him from pulling ahead and winning. In a statement, Casey said he had just called McCormick to congratulate him. “As the first count of ballots is completed, Pennsylvanians can move forward with the knowledge that their voices were heard, whether their vote was the first to be counted or the last,” Casey said. The Associated Press called the race for McCormick on Nov. 7, concluding that not enough ballots remained to be counted in areas Casey was winning for him to take the lead. As of Thursday, McCormick led by about 16,000 votes out of almost 7 million ballots counted. That was well within the 0.5% margin threshold to trigger an automatic statewide recount under Pennsylvania law. But no election official expected a recount to change more than a couple hundred votes or so, and Pennsylvania’s highest court dealt him a blow when it refused entreaties to allow counties to count mail-in ballots that lacked a correct handwritten date on the return envelope. Vehicles were torched on Friday night in the latest in a string of arson attacks to hit south Wales. The most recent incidents involved three vehicles being set alight in Rhondda Cynon Taf — and police are appealing for help to identify two hooded suspects caught on CCTV. A South Wales Police spokeswoman said: "Police investigating arson attacks on three vehicles are appealing for information. It is believed the fires were started deliberately some time between 8.30pm and 9.30pm on Friday, December 27. One of the vehicles was in Park View, Llanharan, outside a family home where a young child was present. A short time later two vehicles were set alight in Oak Street, Rhydyfelin, where the suspects were captured on CCTV." One Rhydyfelin resident issued a social media plea for the public's help in identifying the culprits. "They just set my next door neighbours' cars on fire and ran off," he wrote. "Two cars totally wrecked." WalesOnline has asked South Wales Police if the vandalism is being treated as potentially linked to the arson spree in the early hours of December 21 in the Vale of Glamorgan. Two vehicles parked on Stacey Street, Dinas Powys, were set alight as well as one on Cross Common Road, Dinas Powys, and another on St Andrews Road in nearby Wenvoe. A police spokesperson said shortly afterwards: “One of the cars damaged in Dinas Powys belonged to a woman who had died just two days earlier." Witnesses or anyone who has information or footage which could help identify those responsible for the Rhondda Cynon Taf attacks is asked to call South Wales Police on 101 and quote reference number 2400426105.
