Broken windows is an antiquated type of discretionary policing that legally allows for the disproportionate discrimination and criminalization of minorities, specifically African Americans and the poor. This method should be completely put to rest as scholars have proved that it does not achieve its intended purpose, further marginalizes minorities and is unfruitful for all parties involved. Broken-windows policing was first proposed in 1982 by George Kelling and James Wilson as a solution to prevent serious crime by cracking down on minor crimes and maintaining order. With this tactic comes the discretionary process of deciding what “order” looks like, creating a space to push racialized agendas. With this type of discretionary policing, we can understand how we’ve seen a 700% increase in incarceration from 1972 to 2009, as the Sentencing Project has . It’s not to say that broken-window policing is the primary suspect for this exponential increase, but it is part of a cornucopia of practices like it that comprise what we call our criminal justice system. This policing method led to the implementation of “stop and frisk” searches, which only created further animosity and fractured the bond of trust between the community and law enforcement. Engendering distrust and a weary attitude toward police only leads to more violent crime. The Sentencing Project that in 1970, 30% of prisoners were convicted for a violent crime; in 2022 that percentage rose to 63%. Furthermore, broken-windows policing can be linked to the historical legacy of the Black Codes — laws implemented following the abolition of slavery that systematically restricted the rights and freedoms of African Americans, particularly with regard to their mobility and autonomy. In cities like Baltimore, broken-windows policing has led to the criminalization of behaviors such as “strolling while poor” or “driving while Black.” Not only do these practices reflect the same racial biases embedded within the Black Codes, but they perpetuate a contemporary system of racial control that contributes to what activist Michelle Alexander calls the “New Jim Crow” within the criminal justice system. A deal which could see the Elgin Marbles returned to Greece is “still some distance” away, George Osborne has signalled. The former Tory chancellor, now chairman of the British Museum, suggested Sir Keir Starmer had contributed to a warmer spirit of the negotiations over the famous ancient artworks. Greece has long called for the return of the Marbles, also known as the Parthenon sculptures, and maintains they were illegally removed from Athens’ acropolis during a period of foreign occupation. The British Museum – where they are currently on display – is forbidden by law from giving away any of its artefacts, and the Government has no plans to change the law to permit a permanent move. But under Mr Osborne’s leadership, the museum is negotiating the possibility of a long-term loan of the sculptures, in exchange for rolling exhibitions of famous artworks. No 10 has indicated the Prime Minister is unlikely to stand in the way of such a deal. Speaking on Political Currency, the podcast he hosts alongside former Labour politician Ed Balls, Mr Osborne said the museum was “looking to see if we can come to some arrangement where at some point some of the sculptures are in Athens, where, of course, they were originally sited”. He added: “And in return, Greece lends us some of its treasures, and we made a lot of progress on that, but we’re still some distance from any kind of agreement.” The Greek government has suggested negotiations with the museum have taken a warmer tone since Labour came to power in the summer. Ireland players Denise O’Sullivan and Caitlin Hayes have criticised the FAI’s decision to relieve national team assistant Colin Healy of his duties earlier this month. The 44-year-old Corkman departed the set-up over a fortnight ago along with former boss Eileen Gleeson following the side’s Euro 2025 play-off defeat to Wales. Healy, who was capped 13 times during his playing days, served as Gleeson’s assistant during her 15-month reign and was a popular figure amongst the staff and players. Integrity Sport, Healy’s representatives, also issued a statement this month expressing their disappointment at the decision. I’m disappointed to say the least,” added the Cork native, with her post viewed almost 150 thousand times this weekend. Celtic defender Hayes also expressed her frustrations, adding: “I couldn’t agree more,” in a reply to O’Sullivan’s post. “Colin went above and beyond his role as an assistant coach and for me personally, he couldn’t have done much more to help me settle into a team, that was very daunting at the beginning. I would be doing all that I could for him to stay if it was up to me.” The FAI confirmed on December 11 that Gleeson’s contract would not be renewed, and the following day Healy’s representatives issued a statement sharing their disappointment. “Incredibly disappointing to learn Integrity Sports client Colin Healy has been relieved of his duties along with other staff members,” they said on Instagram, also revealing that the ex-Cork City and Celtic midfielder had turned down two job offers in recent weeks to remain in the national team set-up. “Colin is an exceptional coach and one of the most honourable people I’ve met in the game. After the heartbreaking loss of his beautiful wife Kelly this year, Colin has shown an unbelievable resolve and commitment to continue his work with the Women’s National Team under such difficult family circumstances. “Over the past few weeks he has also displayed a kind of loyalty rarely seen in football, declining to pursue two different management offers due to his complete dedication to his work with the FAI, Eileen, her staff and players. “For all the talk of the need for growth in Irish football, the importance of funding and for training hours for young players to increase, one vividly bright spot within the game here is unquestionable, that we have never been in a better place in relation to the volume of excellent coaches we have available with huge potential. “We are producing plenty of men and women who can absolutely operate at an elite level if given the opportunity and time to prove themselves. “Regardless of money, plan etc, Irish football cannot grow long term, unless a greater faith and belief is shown in Irish coaches to attain and retain opportunities at the top of the coaching pyramid.” Following this month’s heartbreaking Euro 2025 play-off defeat at home to Wales, as Ireland missed out on a historic first qualification, the team are back in action in February when they take on Turkey at home on February 21.
