Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) [India], November 23 (ANI): Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu extended his heartfelt congratulations to senior Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi for her emphatic victory in the Wayanad by-election on Saturday. Sukhu said that Priyanka Gandhi's record-breaking win marks a "significant milestone" in her electoral journey and will further "strengthen the Congress party." The CM also congratulated senior leaders and party workers for their success in the Jharkhand Assembly elections, emphasizing their dedication and hard work. After winning the Lok Sabha by-poll for Kerala's Wayanad seat, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi thanked voters for giving her "the honour to represent them." "I thank the people of Wayanad for giving me the honour to represent them. It's a testament to the fact that my brother worked hard there, their love for him and their trust in me. I feel it's a great honour and I will respect it fully," she told reporters. According to the Election Commission, Priyanka Gandhi won the Wayanad bypoll by 4,10,931 votes by defeating BJP candidate Navya Haridas and CPI candidate Sathyan Mokeri. She won 6,22,338 votes, Sathyan Mokeri bagged 2,11,407 and Navya Haridas managed to win 1,09,939 votes. The Wayanad seat fell vacant as Rahul Gandhi resigned from there after deciding to retain the UP's Rae Bareli constituency, as he had won both seats during the Lok Sabha elections in 2024. Meanwhile, CM Sukhu, in response to a question, criticized the BJP for engaging in obstructionist rather than cooperative politics in Himachal Pradesh. He stated, "The BJP evades addressing public concerns and avoids discussing their five-year performance. Instead, they divert attention to matters like toilet tax and samosas. The public deserves to know why the standards of education and healthcare declined during their regime." He said that his government is committed to fulfilling its promises and leading Himachal Pradesh on the path of development. "The people elect a government for five years, and democracy is the voice of the people. However, BJP is creating hurdles in the state's progress," he added. The Chief Minister remarked that the BJP is divided into five factions, each led by Nadda, Anurag Thakur, Jairam Thakur, Rajeev Bindal, and a group of former Congress members who joined the BJP, now referred to as the "East India Company." He stated that the opposition is not engaging in policy-based criticism but is instead targeting him personally. "Despite their efforts, the current state government is steadfast in its commitment to advancing Himachal Pradesh on the path of development. Over the past two years, the government has strengthened the state's economy, which has become a source of concern for the opposition, he added. Sukhu asked former Chief Minister Jairam Thakur to explain why Himachal Pradesh fell to 21st place in qualitative education during the BJP's tenure. He further pointed out that the current government has made significant strides, such as increasing MGNREGA wages by Rs. 60 and reinstating the old pension scheme for government employees. "I want to assure everyone that we will take firm and decisive steps, which will yield positive results. We are moving towards a self-reliant Himachal Pradesh through Vyavstha Parivartan, the foundation for which has already been laid by the present government." After weeks of fear and bewilderment about the drones buzzing over parts of New York and New Jersey, Sen. Chuck Schumer is urging the federal government to deploy better drone-tracking technology to identify and ultimately stop the airborne pests. The New York Democrat is calling on the Department of Homeland Security to immediately deploy special technology that identifies and tracks drones back to their landing spots, according to briefings from his office. Schumer’s calls come amid growing public concern that the federal government hasn’t offered clear explanations as to who is operating the drones and has not stopped them. National security officials have said the drones don’t appear to be a sign of foreign interference. “There’s a lot of us who are pretty frustrated right now,” Rep. Jim Himes, D-Conn., the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said on Fox News Sunday. “The answer ‘We don’t know’ is not a good enough answer.” ‘Shoot them down’ President-elect Donald Trump posted on social media last week: “Can this really be happening without our government’s knowledge? I don’t think so. Let the public know, and now. Otherwise, shoot them down.” Certain agencies within the Department of Homeland Security have the power to “incapacitate” drones, U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos on Sunday. “But we need those authorities expanded,” he said, without saying exactly how. The drones don’t appear to be linked to foreign governments, Mayorkas said. “We know of no foreign involvement with respect to the sightings in the Northeast,” he said. Last year, federal aviation rules began requiring certain drones to broadcast their identities. It’s not clear whether that information has been used to determine who is operating the drones swarming locations in New York and New Jersey. Schumer is calling for recently declassified radar technology to be used to help determine whether an object is a drone or a bird, identify its electronic registration, and follow it back to its landing place.

Prosecutors never publicly named the suspect in the investigation but some Swedish media reported it was Mbappé. Former Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) told his followers on Thursday to compare his explanation of the mystery drones to Rep. Jeff Van Drew’s (R-N.J.) long-shot theory that he floated on Wednesday. This comes as residents across the state have expressed deep concerns with the drone reports despite officials reiterating that there is no known threat. Kinzinger, a strong Trump critic, suggested that the drone sightings may be coming from just one private company that is testing its own drones without breaking any laws. “My drone theory, bookmark this vs the Jeff Van Drew ‘Iran mothership’ theory: Private company testing transportation drones, and does not want to reveal their intellectual property so not fessing up... and not breaking any laws at all," Kinzinger wrote on social media platform X. My drone theory, bookmark this vs the Jeff Van Drew “Iran mothership” theory: Private company testing transportation drones, and does not want to reveal their intellectual property so not fessing up... and not breaking any laws at all Van Drew, in a Wednesday appearance on Fox News, floated the idea that the drones over the Garden State could be flying in from an Iranian “mothership” off the East Coast. “This is a national security crisis we cannot ignore,” Van Drew wrote in his post on X . “Bring them down now.” Deputy Defense Department Press Secretary Sabrina Singh debunked this claim in a press conference on Wednesday, explaining that there is no Iranian “mothership” off the East Coast. “There is not any truth to that. There is no Iranian ship off the coast of the United States and there’s no so-called mothership launching drones towards the United States,” she said. It is still not clear what these mystery drones are, but the FBI is continuing to investigate the sightings. The FBI has asked for the public’s assistance in reporting the drones to its tip line. Malayalam singer Anju Joseph ties the knot with Aditya Parameswaran in a simple court setupROME (AP) — In 2020, it was a run to the Champions League quarterfinals just as Bergamo was becoming the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic . Last season, it was an upset victory over Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League final to end the German club’s European-record unbeaten run at 51 games. Atalanta keeps on surprising and its latest exploit was moving atop Serie A following a 3-1 win at Parma on Saturday for its seventh straight win in the Italian league. And to think that coach Gian Piero Gasperini considered leaving Atalanta toward the end of last season. Now, Gasperini has the chance to guide “La Dea” (The Goddess), as the team is nicknamed, to its first ever Italian league title. There’s a long way to go, though, and it should be noted that Atalanta is level on points with second-place Inter Milan, which routed Hellas Verona 5-0 earlier, and that Napoli has a chance to reclaim the lead when it hosts Roma on Sunday. Also Saturday, AC Milan and Juventus drew 0-0 at the San Siro in a match with few chances from both sides. Milan produced one shot on goal and Juventus created two. Atalanta's Mateo Retegui scored his league-leading 12th goal of the season, Ederson made it 2-0 before the break and Europa League final hero Ademola Lookman restored the two-goal advantage after Matteo Cancellieri had pulled one back for Parma. Retegui’s fourth headed goal of the season put him atop that category across Europe’s five major leagues, according to Opta, while Lookman volleyed in a cross from Juan Cuadrado after having two goals disallowed. Gasperini was sent off midway through the second half for protests. But he was smiling in the stands at the final whistle. Atalanta's 34 goals are the most in Italy, and trail only Barcelona (42), Bayern Munich (36) and Paris Saint-Germain (36) across Europe's top five leagues. Atalanta has won two and drawn two in the Champions League this season. Marcus Thuram scored twice for defending champion Inter at Verona. Inter was missing top striker Lautaro Martinez, who was out sick. But five goals in the first half made Lautaro’s absence a non-issue. Joaquin Correa opened the scoring 17 minutes in, Thuram then scored twice before more goals from Stefan de Vrij and Yann Aurel Bisseck. Correa nearly added another in second-half stoppage time but his effort hit the woodwork. Inter's only loss across all competitions this season was a derby defeat to Milan in September. Egypt's foreign policy is exceptionally complicated (it is also one of the largest beneficiaries of US military aid). It seeks to balance its relations with the US, European countries, Russia, and China but is and often finds itself in a difficult position. The US has banned Egypt from purchasing Russian fighter jets while also refusing to sell its advanced F-35 fighter jets . No to new Russian aircraft & the F-35 Egypt maintains working relations with the United States , European countries, China, and Russia . Through the Cold War, Egypt purchased Soviet military aircraft, but purchasing new Russian military aircraft is no longer an option. In 2017, the United States passed the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAASTA) , which sanctions countries purchasing advanced Russian military equipment (like fighter jets). This led to countries - like Egypt - canceling their orders for Russian fighter jets. The 24 Su-35S jets built for Egypt are now being delivered to also-sanctioned Iran . Egypt is one of the largest beneficiaries of US military aid, receiving $1.3 billion in 2024 . Under the first Trump administration, Egypt agreed to purchase 20 US fifth-generation F-35A fighter jets. However, the deal soon fell through, with the Pentagon disapproving the sale. The US is extremely protective of its F-35 technology (which is why it has refused to sell the jet to the UAE and Turkey). Additionally, the US is concerned about upsetting the balance of power in the region, where Israel maintains a distinct technological edge. Unable to purchase Russian fighter jets or America's top-of-the-line jets, Egypt is reportedly ordering (or considering ordering) Chinese J-10C fighter jets. Some African countries operate limited numbers of fighter jets, and only a handful have what can be considered modern multirole fighters. Egypt's large & diverse fleet of fighter jets On paper, Egypt has one of the largest air forces in the world. According to FlightGlobal's 2024 report , the Egyptian Air Force is ranked 8th with 1,080 military aircraft or 2% of the world's total inventory (ahead of every European country excluding Russia). In terms of combat aircraft, Egypt is ranked 9th with 326 fighter jets (the second-largest fleet in the Middle East behind Saudi Arabia's much more modern fleet of 364 fighters ). The Egyptian Air Force's fighter jet fleet consists of French, Soviet, and American fighters. The backbone of the fleet is 218 F-16A/C Fighting Falcons and 24 French Dassault Rafales (with another 31 on order). Additionally, Egypt has 78 aging French Mirage 5s,43 largely obsolete Soviet MiG-29s,19 French Mirage 2000s, and 40 light fighter/training Alpha Jets. (rumored) Rumored planned purchase from China There are unconfirmed reports that Egypt has signed an agreement to purchase Chinese Chengdu J-10C "Mighty Dragon" fighter jets to replace its aging F-16s. As of the time of writing (December 2024), this remains unconfirmed. It is also possible Egypt is trying to pressure the US to sell fighter jets or upgrade packages. Egypt may also have many MiG-21s, MiG-17s, F-4 Phantom IIs, and other obsolete aircraft in reserve. However, none are listed here as FlightGlobal does not consider any of them to be operational. Lockheed Martin has offered the F-21 for India, saying it is a specially modified F-16 for Indian needs. Light fighters and trainers While only a few countries can produce multirole fighter jets, there are comparatively a lot of countries that produce light fighters and trainer aircraft. Egypt's light fighters and trainers come from Brazil (built in the US), China, the Czech Republic, and Germany. Egypt has an impressive 118 Chinese/Pakistani Hongdu JL-8 intermediate jet trainers and light attack aircraft. For now, the Hongdu JL-8 is one of the few Chinese aircraft in the Egyptian Air Force, but this may change in the future. Egypt also has Brazilian Embraer 54 EMB-312 Super Tucano turboprop light attack aircraft (although the export variants of the Super Tucano are built in the United States, not Brazil). Other trainers or light fighters in Egypt include the Czech Republic Aero L-39 Albatros (a high-performance jet trainer) and the German Grob G115 (a training aircraft). Egypt's transport fleet Regarding transport aircraft, Egypt has a mixture of Soviet/Russian transports, including the Ilyushin Il-76 heavy airlifter and the Soviet/Ukrainian Anontov An-74. Egypt also operates a fleet of C-130H Hercules and modernized C-130J Super Hercules tactical airlifters. Egypt's diverse helicopter fleet Egypt operates a large and diverse helicopter fleet. Perhaps the most remarkable thing is that it operates advanced American and Russian attack helicopters side by side. Egypt has 46 AH-64D Apache helicopters and 46 Russian Ka-52 "Alligator" attack helicopters. Egypt also operates the Mil Mi-24 "Hind" Soviet/Russian gunship helicopter (as well as the Mi-8/17 transport helicopter). Egypt is the only export customer of Russia's Ka-52. These attack helicopters have been used extensively in Ukraine, where they have sustained disproportional losses (it's unclear how many operational Ka-52s Russia has remaining). A unique feature of the Ka-52 is that it is the only operational helicopter to sport an ejector seat (and Russian pilots have been observed using them after their helicopters were hit over Ukraine). Egyptian military helicopters: Quantity: Country of origin: AH-64D Apache: 46 United States AgustaWestland AW109/139/149/189: 30 (+9 on order) Italy/UK CH-47 Chinook: 19 United States Airbus H125M: 3 Europe Ka-52 Alligator: 46 Russia Mi-8/17 Hip: 62 Soviet Union/Russia Mi-24 Hind: 8 Soviet Union/Russia Aérospatiale Gazelle SA342: 89 France SH-3 Sea King: 23 United States Kaman SH-2G Super Seasprite: 10 United States Other US-origin helicopters include CH-47D/F heavy-lift Chinooks.
