1 2 Nagpur: Despite raising their voices after being deprived of chance to vote during the Lok Sabha elections held earlier this year, majority of the residents of old-age homes in the city claimed they couldn't exercise their franchise in the assembly polls too. Those in the 85+ age group were hoping to avail the home voting facility but complained they did not receive enrolment forms for the same. "We tried to plead that the home voting facility be extended to those 70 and above, but to no avail," said Mohan Sarwate, caretaker and manager of Soham Seniors Home which is a shelter for 60 members aged 65 to 90. Sarwate added that around 45 senior citizens from the old-age home had to travel to different parts of the city, such as Gokulpeth and Ring Road, to reach their respective polling stations and cast their votes. Makarand Kolaskar (76), a resident of Soham, was unable to vote during the LS elections as he did not have an voter card with a local address. Speaking to TOI, Kolaskar said, "Travelling to the polling station was a bit challenging as I had to arrange for transport, although Soham made travel accommodations for a few since all the polling stations were scattered. Preference was given to senior citizens at the polling station. I did not require assistance in walking or getting to the polling station, but officers at the booth were more than willing to help." The Elder Joy Care Centre and Old-age Home in Pratap Nagar, has 15 bedridden and paralysed senior citizens. Owner of the place told TOI, "None of these people were able to vote in the Lok Sabha elections. I tried to contact the authorities and local representatives of political parties, but to no avail.
