The recent revelation that only a small percentage of the 39 rescue dogs passed the test has led to speculation about the reasons behind such a low success rate. Some have pointed to the rigorous nature of the testing process, which includes assessments of the dogs' agility, obedience, and ability to work in challenging environments. Others have raised concerns about the adequacy of the training provided to the dogs prior to the test, suggesting that more resources and attention should be dedicated to preparing them for the demands of search and rescue operations. As we navigate the complexities of the digital age, where online interactions can often be fraught with negativity and hostility, it is important to remember the importance of empathy, kindness, and standing up for what is right. 3. **Lack of Physical Activity**: Sedentary lifestyle and lack of regular physical activity have been identified as independent risk factors for cancer. Physical inactivity not only contributes to weight gain and obesity but also affects important biological processes involved in cancer development, such as immune function, hormone regulation, and inflammation. Engaging in regular moderate to vigorous physical activity has been shown to reduce the risk of various cancers, including breast, colorectal, and endometrial cancer. Incorporating exercise into daily routines, such as walking, cycling, or yoga, can have significant health benefits and lower the risk of cancer recurrence in cancer survivors.
Just over a fifth of four-year-olds have asked their parents for a this Christmas, a study has found. The survey of parents showed that 21 per cent of children aged four and five had asked for a phone that would enable them to access social media and the internet. That equates to some three million children at the start of primary school. By the age of nine, it has risen to 37 per cent, and among all under-11s, just under a third (29 per cent) have asked for a smartphone this Christmas, even though the such as Facebook, Instagram and TikTok is 13. The survey by pollsters Opinium of 1,000 parents of school-age children was conducted for EE, which in August became the first major telecoms firm to advise parents and instead buy them “brick” or feature phones allowing them only to text and call. The company said that there was increasing evidence that parents were taking up the guidance with one in six (17 per cent) of parents saying they were resisting the demands of their children and . Alex Cornett, a director at EE, said: “Children under the age of 13 should not be using social media at all, and we’d encourage parents to use parental controls, as well as a family-sharing app like Google Family Link or Apple Family Sharing, to keep a watchful eye on where their children are going online.” Ofcom, the online safety regulator, found in April that one-quarter of three- to seven-year-olds have a smartphone, up from a fifth the previous year. It rose to 59 per cent of eight- to 11-year-olds and 95 per cent of 12- to 15-year-olds. An international survey of 10,000 parents, including 2,000 in the UK, found that more than half regretted handing over a smartphone to their child. They felt it impeded family engagement, hindered children’s sleep, reduced their physical exercise and limited time socialising with their friends. Ofcom is introducing a draft children’s code as part of the Online Safety Act to ensure they are not exposed to harmful content. But leading peers and campaigners have warned that its draft proposals do not go far enough and fail to enforce minimum age limits on social media sites, which are generally pitched at 13. The scale of the problem was revealed last month by Ofcom research which suggested that more than a fifth of children aged eight to 17 who were on social media had lied about their age to gain access to a platform. It showed, for example, that 25 per cent of eight-year-olds with a social media profile were on at least one platform that had a user age of 16 plus and 14 per cent were on those with a user age of 18-plus. Jon Higham, the online safety policy director at Ofcom, told The Telegraph: “What we see is 22 per cent of children are online with a profile which suggests they’re an adult because at the moment all too many platforms basically let children self-certify how old they are. “It doesn’t take a genius to work out that children are going to lie about their age. So we think there’s a big issue there.” Mr Higham said Ofcom would be setting out next month what social media platforms would need to do to verify children’s age. He said the regulator would be expecting them to use age verification technology that was “highly accurate and effective”. “The sort of thing that we might look to is some of this facial age and estimation technology that we see companies bringing in now, which we think is really pretty good at determining who is a child and who is an adult,” he said. “So we’re going to be looking to drive out the use of that sort of content, so platforms can determine who’s a child and who isn’t, and then put in place extra protections for kids to stop them seeing toxic content.” Ofcom will have powers to fine tech firms that fail to protect children from online harms up to 10 per cent of their global turnover – equivalent to £10 billion for Meta, owner of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp – and also jail executives for up to two years for persistent breaches of the law.
1. A book of 642 tiny things to draw because sometimes, when boredom strikes, they need something other than electronics to entertain them. This'll ask them to draw a garbanzo bean, a yellow polka-dot bikini, a ball of lint, and so many more random, interesting things. BuzzFeed Shopping contributor Jonathan Mazzei says, "My girlfriend got me this book as a gift a few years ago, and it turned out to be even better than I expected! The prompts are super fun, and help you to think outside of the box even during those moments when you feel like you have no ideas. It's great to casually doodle in while passing time since you don't have to think of what to draw, but it also can be really helpful when brainstorming for creative projects. My girlfriend is a visual artist and graphic designer, and she loves using it to play around with ideas and make her think of things she never would have thought of without it. Plus, it's small and super portable! Highly recommend!" Get it from Amazon for $9.25 . 2. Emotional support plushies to comfort them when they're feeling a little down. There are so many options to choose from — like some ~berry~ adorable strawberries, cheery chickies, and (my fave) some juicy dumplings! As soon as she opened it, she wrapped herself in it and didn’t take it off the rest of the night." — Vicky Get it from Amazon for $15.65+ (available in five sizes and five styles). 4. A Tile Mate to give to anyone but your mom (because somehow she manages to find everything). If your Secret Santa recipient is someone who loses everything, this is their savior. When they're about to leave for work and just *cannot* find their keys, they can just tap into the app on their phone and ring the Tile to hear its little jingle. They can attach it to basically anything and track its last known location with both iOS and Android devices! The Bluetooth connection works up to 250 feet and if they're further than that, no worries! They can check the app to see the last known location. Or, if they happen to lose their phone, they can double-tap the Tile to find it! With this new version, they can even connect it to Life360! If they want to keep it in their wallet and can't connect a keychain to it, check out the Tile Slim . Promising review: "Bought it for my boyfriend who loses his keys a lot, he loves it. Promising review: "This puzzle is totally clear. You don't know if the pieces are upside down or right side up. They have the same puzzle with more pieces — may grab one of those to see if I can complete." — Robin L. This baby isn't like any other — once it's completed, the envelope reveals extra pieces they can add onto the puzzle for a ~twist~ ending! Promising review: "I bought their first puzzle for something to do over Thanksgiving a few years ago and EVERYONE loved them. Teens, parents, g'parents . It was the start of our downtime. The puzzle quality is amazing and the illusions at the end (the extra puzzle you get to put together) is SUPER FUN. The kids also liked the 'I spy' game included to find different elements of the puzzle. Now we're back for two more for summer break. My kids and I already spent about a week putting one together and it's just the right amount of challenging and gratifying. Each series has a slightly different illusion, but it's the same concept ***SPOILER*** When you finish the puzzle, you'll open up a new pack and be instructed on how to move around sections of the puzzle and get extra pieces to put together in the resulting hole. The challenge of putting together that additional puzzle without a picture is fun also." — BeantownGirl Get it from Amazon for $22.99 . 7. An Owala FreeSip tumbler offering all the benefits of a Stanley without the spills. What sets this bb apart from all the other bottles out there is its spout — they can either drink through a straw or tilt it back to chug. Plus, they'll never have to painfully sip on a lukewarm bev again because it keeps drinks cold for up to 24 hours with its triple-layer insulation. I've been wanting to get an Owala for the longest time because one, I'm a sucker for colorful things and two, I'm obsessed with water bottles. With that being said, I didn't need another bottle and my friends kept telling me it was a waste of money to get one. Obviously, I didn't listen to them and caved and I'm not even kidding you, this is the one water bottle I bring with me EVERYWHERE. I've tried the Hydro Flask bottle and tumbler , HydroJug , and Stanley — I love them all, but I hate to say, the Owala just reigns supreme. My fave feature has to be the straw because not only does sipping require less effort but it's so much easier to drink while walking or in the car (aka no more dribbles!). It's basically like having a tumbler with a lid. Seriously, whoever invented the Owala is an absolute genius. I recently went to the Bahamas and brought it everywhere with me and let me tell you, my water stayed cold the entiiiiire day. It's also so easy to carry around thanks to the loop and when you want to put it in your bag, just push the loop down and it'll lock the lid in place, GENIUS! Promising review: "Without a doubt everyone has heard the uproar over huge insulated cup brands using lead to make their cups. If that is a concern for you, then there is no need to worry about this one. This cup is made lead-free and works phenomenally! I always put ice in my Owala with my water and notice that all the ice is still there over a span of 48 hours and still freezing cold ." — DietDrKelp069 Get a 24-ounce tumbler from Amazon for $27.99 (available in three sizes and 22 colors ). 8. A wireless, Bluetooth-enabled karaoke mic for the singer in your group to belt their pretty little heart out. Just try not to regret it when they start screaming "I Will Always Love You" on max volume. Promising review: "You don't understand, TikTok made me obsess over this microphone. As a 30+-year-old woman, I resisted purchasing it. I finally broke down and bought it because it was haunting me in my sleep. I'm so glad I did. When I am in a bad mood I start karaoke in my house and am instantly better. It has 'ruined' my teenage son's life because my performances can be heard through his Xbox microphone. This is a must-have product." — Zane A. Undercoffer Get it from Amazon for $16.99+ (available in 14 colors). 10. I was pleased with the purchase in all." — Charles Ramsey Get it from Amazon for $7.99+ (available in 13 animals). 11. I don't know how it works exactly as I haven't done any research yet but it does in fact make sour things sweet and sweet things even sweeter. Raw sliced lemon taste like lemon candy and pineapples even sweeter, so sweet that I couldn't stand it lol. Pillowy slippers that must have been made by the comfort gods themselves because over 700 reviewers say they're like walking on clouds ☁️ and as a proud owner of a pair myself, I wholeheartedly agree with that. I recently purchased a pair of these (but will not be including a pic because my feet are looking a lil' yeesh 😬 right now) and I swear it was the best purchase I've made this year — not to be dramatic or anything. I needed some summer shoes because I've been running errands in my Uggs, and in 90-degree weather...that's not very fun, to say the least. These babies are the softest things EVER; I'm not even exaggerating. Every step I take feels like I'm being cushioned by the spongiest cloud, and TBH, it's pretty freaking comforting. I wear them to run errands, during casual outings, and even on my hot girl walks! Promising review: "These are probably the most comfortable slippers I have ever worn. It's like walking on clouds. They are very soft but still give excellent support. When walking on hardwood or tile floors they are very quiet. No one will hear you coming. I purchased two pairs. Don't worry, no snails were harmed in its making (so Gary, you're safe). Promising review : "I’m in my 40s and have spent SO much money on skincare in the past few years and have finally found my holy grail. It felt moisturizing (I live in a hot tropical climate and most true moisturizers leave my face looking oily), cleared up my nose breakouts, evened out texture, kept oil under control, and even made my blackheads WAY less prominent. It has a gooey, almost sticky consistency that spreads very smoothly over the face and dries to nothing. I use it before applying my retinoid at night and add a layer after. In the morning, I use it before sunscreen ( Australian Gold ) and don’t need to wear makeup anymore! Believe the hype!" — kaya Get it from Amazon for $12.99 . 15. Don't be deterred by the candles out the box, though they are mostly white on the outside there are lots of primary color pockets on the inside. They do take a while to burn (three to four hours by my count) but the results are by far worth being patient for. As the flame works through the candle, the primary color pockets blend with the white as well as with each other to create a wide range of colors...I've seen yellows, oranges, reds, pinks, greens, and blues on my finished bottles." — 5ammosh Get six candles from Amazon for $14.99 . (BPT) - Has it been a while since you purchased a new TV? You might be surprised by how far TV technology has come since you bought your last set! Today's smart televisions offer dramatic improvements in picture quality and home screens that are far easier to navigate. Plus, they come with a host of cool features like voice control that you may not even know about. It's time to discover what you've been missing — and if you're asking yourself where to start, the Fire TV Buyer Insights Report can help. This independent study surveyed over 2,000 recent purchasers of smart TVs to learn everything from where they did their product research to why they decided to buy. With the holidays almost upon us, the insights in this report can help guide you as you kick off your seasonal shopping. Whether you're buying a gift, hosting a holiday gathering or looking for the perfect game-day screen, read on to find the best TV for your needs. How do you find the right TV? Here's how recent purchasers did it. When it comes to buying a new TV, there are several factors you'll want to consider, starting with who's going to be using it. The study found that spouses (36%), kids (13%), and even grandparents (1%) were involved in the purchase process, so be sure to keep your home's audience in mind. Beyond that, you'll also want to think about: Room size Smart TVs range in size from a 32-inch screen all the way up to a whopping 100 inches or more. To determine the right screen size for your room, follow this guideline: Small rooms: 32"–43" screen Medium rooms: 43"–55" screen Large rooms: 55+" screen As for viewing distance, divide the screen's diameter by 8 to get the ideal viewing distance in feet. For example, a 32-inch screen should be watched from about 4 feet away, while you'll want to be about 8 feet away from a 65-inch screen. Usage How you plan to use your new TV should play a large part in your decision-making process. If you're always looking for the latest show or movie to watch, your smart TV should offer optimal access to the latest streaming services. Gamers will experience better play on a TV with a high refresh rate, while sports enthusiasts will want to watch the big game on a set with smooth motion handling. Connected TV experience One of the most important considerations is how you'll use TV. In the study, 83% of TV purchasers said that easy access to content was one of the things they liked best about their new TV. But beyond being an all-in-one source for entertainment, your smart TV should also play well with other smart home devices. For instance, Fire TV allows you to pair compatible devices seamlessly like video doorbells, smart home devices, and more. And with select models, Fire TV's Ambient Experience can turn the biggest screen in your home into a beautiful, always-on smart display rotating through beautiful art, personal photos, and glanceable information like calendars and reminders. Knowledge is power Before you land on the perfect TV, you'll need to do a little research first. The study found that only 12% of shoppers bought their TV on an impulse, while 65% engaged in some form of product research. Most (82%) respondents conducted some or all of their research online for instant access to smart TV reviews and feature comparisons. In fact, over half of respondents who searched online mentioned digital retailers like Amazon as a great source for honest ratings and buyer reviews. Timing is everything According to the study, the time from research to purchase takes about two weeks, so plan ahead — especially if you're thinking about giving a TV as a holiday gift. There are also some great deals available during this time of year, so keep an eye out for sales and promotional offers. The big picture A new TV is a big purchase, so don't make it an impulsive one. Take the time to do your research and remember that everyone takes a different path to finding the perfect TV. Whether your search begins online, offline, or with a mix of both, it will end with a next-level viewing experience that's just right for the way you watch.
CBC resurrects live New Year's Eve broadcast special with coast-to-coast showWASHINGTON – It’s a pre-Thanksgiving tradition at the White House, but an animal rights group says it’s a fowl festivity that is, well, foul. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is urging lame-duck President Joe Biden to end the annual Thanksgiving turkey pardon , citing what it calls “the dirty business” of turkey factory farming. “As a ‘lame duck,’ you no longer need to heed the interests of factory farmers and, instead, have a joyous opportunity to spare Americans and turkeys this humiliating meat-industry stunt that uses the White House as its public relations backdrop,” Ingrid Newkirk, the group’s president, wrote in a letter to Biden last week. The White House turkey pardon is a decades-old ritual that is scheduled to continue for the 77 th time on Monday, when Biden will use his pardon power to grant a presidential reprieve to two lucky birds that will keep them off the Thanksgiving dinner table. The gobblers chosen to receive this year’s pardons are two Minnesota-born turkeys weighing 40 and 41 pounds. They were hatched on July 18 in Northfield, Minnesota, and raised on a farm by John Zimmerman, chairman of the National Turkey Federation, and his nine-year-old son, Grant. Thanksgiving tradition: Who was the first president to pardon a turkey? Here's how the bird escaped a 'fowl' fate In addition to giving them a lease on life, the White House also will bestow names on the two pardoned poultry. The turkey federation provides a list of colorful monikers suggested by attendees at the Minnesota State Fair, but the White House gets the final say. Last year’s lucky birds were named Liberty and Bell. Two years earlier, the feathered friends were Chocolate and Chip. The names of this year’s protected fowl will be unveiled at a news conference in Washington on Sunday. Post-pardon, the birds will go back to Minnesota, where they will live at Farmamerica, an agricultural interpretive center. There, they’ll serve as ambassadors for the ag industry, and admirers will be able to visit them. Thanksgiving 2024 travel forecast: Brace for rain, snow and delays Credit for the first turkey pardon goes to Abraham Lincoln, who, at the urging of his son Tad, spared the life of a turkey that had been delivered to the White House for Christmas dinner, according to the White House Historical Association . John F. Kennedy pardoned a turkey meant for his table in 1963, the historical association said, and some of his successors occasionally followed suit. When he was president, Ronald Reagan made the turkey pardon part of the Thanksgiving turkey presentation ceremony in the Rose Garden. George H.W. Bush turned it into an annual event by pardoning every turkey during his administration. Every president since has continued the tradition. For Biden, who is leaving office in January, this year’s turkey pardon will be his last. PETA wants it to be the last, period. Accusing the turkey industry of “astounding cruelty,” Newkirk urged Biden in her letter to “please end this wretched ritual that doesn’t befit public office.” Not looking to ruffle any feathers, Alex Davidson, a spokesman for the turkey federation, declined to comment. Franco’s lawyers asked the court to reconsider the postponement, arguing Franco must report to spring training in mid-February. The judge replied that Franco is obligated to continue with the trial schedule and his conditional release from detainment.NEW YORK (AP) — Technology stocks pulled Wall Street to another record amid a mixed Monday of trading. The S&P 500 rose 0.2% from its all-time high set on Friday to post a record for the 54th time this year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 128 points, or 0.3%, while the Nasdaq composite gained 1%. Super Micro Computer, a stock that’s been on an AI-driven roller coaster, soared 28.7% to lead the market. Following allegations of misconduct and the resignation of its public auditor , the maker of servers used in artificial-intelligence technology said an investigation found no evidence of misconduct by its management or by the company’s board. It also said that it doesn’t expect to restate its past financials and that it will find a new chief financial officer, appoint a general counsel and make other moves to strengthen its governance. Big Tech stocks also helped prop up the market. Gains of 1.8% for Microsoft and 3.2% for Meta Platforms were the two strongest forces pushing upward on the S&P 500. Intel was another propellant during the morning, but it lost an early gain to fall 0.5% after the chip company said CEO Pat Gelsinger has retired and stepped down from the board. Intel is looking for Gelsinger’s replacement, and its chair said it’s “committed to restoring investor confidence.” Intel recently lost its spot in the Dow Jones Industrial Average to Nvidia, which has skyrocketed in Wall Street’s frenzy around AI. Stellantis, meanwhile, skidded following the announcement of its CEO’s departure . Carlos Tavares steps down after nearly four years in the top spot of the automaker, which owns car brands like Jeep, Citroën and Ram, amid an ongoing struggle with slumping sales and an inventory backlog at dealerships. The world’s fourth-largest automaker’s stock fell 6.3% in Milan. The majority of stocks in the S&P 500 likewise fell, including California utility PG&E. It dropped 5% after saying it would sell $2.4 billion of stock and preferred shares to raise cash. Retailers were mixed amid what’s expected to be the best Cyber Monday on record and coming off Black Friday . Target, which recently gave a forecast for the holiday season that left investors discouraged , fell 1.2%. Walmart , which gave a more optimistic forecast, rose 0.2%. Amazon, which looks to benefit from online sales from Cyber Monday, climbed 1.4%. All told, the S&P 500 added 14.77 points to 6,047.15. The Dow fell 128.65 to 44,782.00, and the Nasdaq composite climbed 185.78 to 19,403.95. The stock market largely took Donald Trump’s latest threat on tariffs in stride. The president-elect on Saturday threatened 100% tariffs against a group of developing economies if they act to undermine the U.S. dollar. Trump said he wants the group, headlined by Brazil, Russia, India and China, to promise it won’t create a new currency or otherwise try to undercut the U.S. dollar. The dollar has long been the currency of choice for global trade. Speculation has also been around a long time that other currencies could knock it off its mantle, but no contender has come close. The U.S. dollar’s value rose Monday against several other currencies, but one of its strongest moves likely had less to do with the tariff threats. The euro fell amid a political battle in Paris over the French government’s budget . The euro sank 0.7% against the U.S. dollar and broke below $1.05. In the bond market, Treasury yields gave up early gains to hold relatively steady. The yield on the 10-year Treasury climbed above 4.23% during the morning before falling back to 4.19%. That was just above its level of 4.18% late Friday. A report in the morning showed the U.S. manufacturing sector contracted again last month, but not by as much as economists expected. This upcoming week will bring several big updates on the job market, including the October job openings report, weekly unemployment benefits data and the all-important November jobs report. They could steer the next moves for Federal Reserve, which recently began pulling interest rates lower to give support to the economy. Economists expect Friday’s headliner report to show U.S. employers accelerated their hiring in November, coming off October’s lackluster growth that was hampered by damaging hurricanes and strikes. “We now find ourselves in the middle of this Goldilocks zone, where economic health supports earnings growth while remaining weak enough to justify potential Fed rate cuts,” according to Mark Hackett, chief of investment research at Nationwide. In financial markets abroad, Chinese stocks led gains worldwide as monthly surveys showed improving conditions for manufacturing, partly driven by a surge in orders ahead of Trump’s inauguration next month. Both official and private sector surveys of factory managers showed strong new orders and export orders, possibly partly linked to efforts by importers in the U.S. to beat potential tariff hikes by Trump once he takes office. Indexes rose 0.7% in Hong Kong and 1.1% in Shanghai. ___ AP Business Writers Matt Ott and Elaine Kurtenbach contributed.
