Shadow treasurer Angus Taylor has hit out at Labor's regulatory framework as stunting Australia's economic processes, particularly in the energy industry, as the Coalition touts a cheaper pathway in its nuclear power costings. Speaking to Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell on Sunday Agenda, Mr Taylor blamed Labor's "sclerotic" regulations for preventing progress in the energy sector. The shadow treasurer said the Liberal Party approach was to "get things moving" which was offering up a different approach as seen with the Coalition's recent nuclear energy costings release on Friday. Mr Taylor said the Labor Party had regulated the resources industry "out of existence", adding it was "impossible" to get a tick of approval for projects in multiple sectors such as energy and housing. "There's a different approach to regulation, which is fit for purpose, to deliver the outcomes we need but don't clog up the private sector, don't clog up investment, don't clog up the investments that need to be made by governments as well," he said. "But that's exactly what's happening under the Labor Party." Mr Taylor said the Coalition would seek to overcome regulations to "get things moving" after it released its nuclear power costings last week. The Coalition’s ambitious nuclear energy proposal has been slated to bring down power bills after modelling revealed the policy will be $264 billion cheaper than Labor’s renewables plan. The shadow treasurer said the portion of "clean, baseload nuclear power" would bring down the overall costs of the system which would allow manufacturers, data centres, households, and small businesses to pay less for electricity "over the many decades to come". Asked if the modelling suggested a "massive shrinking" of the economy, Mr Taylor said the "only people who know how to shrink this economy is the Labor Party". "They're doing an extremely good job of it right now. Seven consecutive quarters of GDP per capita going backwards. It's completely unprecedented," he said. "Household budgets are in disarray. They're in ruin. We've never seen the hit to household disposable incomes, the standard of living of Australian households like we've seen since Labor came to power. "Not at any time in the past. Not the recession we had to had under under Paul Keating, not the Gough Whitlam economic disaster. This is worse than all of those situations and so I won't take lectures on the economy from the Labor Party." Mr Taylor continued his rebuke of Labor by addressing the Coalition's energy mix proposal. Opposition Leader Peter Dutton announced details of his ambitions for Australia’s energy future, including 38 per cent of the nation's power to come from nuclear energy by 2050. The energy mix has also included 32 per cent wind, 17 per cent solar, and a smaller contribution from gas and storage. Mr Taylor said the plan would incorporate a broad range of technologies to strike a balance, while also reducing the cost of energy in comparison. "The one person who is imbalanced on energy is Chris Bowen and his mates. The vested interests are out there squawking away at the moment as you'd expect them to," he said. "But (Bowen) is not interested, it seems, in getting electricity bills down. We've seen that he promised to $275 reduction and we are nowhere near that. "He's got 16 days, by the way. He's got 16 days for the deadline on that. But I think we can all be pretty confident we're not going to see that."

Most people have never heard of James Murray from the Treasury, who is one of Rachel Reeves' henchmen. He was sent out last week to plug Labour's supposedly wondrous plans to overhaul business rates, by charging big warehouses more – though unless and until the proposals become reality, small retailers face bigger bills. Murray may have been expecting a smoothly choreographed PR tour, chatting to Labour-friendly shop owners when he was wheeled round Darlington, where the Treasury has a northern outpost, a few days ago. He was soon brought down to earth by Jane and Frederic Robineau, who own a popular patisserie in the town. They told him small business owners are 'crying around their kitchen tables' trying to figure out how to cope with big rises in National Insurance and the minimum wage. They still insist they want to unleash growth, and Reeves has put forward plans such as creating local authority pension megafunds, which she claims could unlock £80billion of investment in UK infrastructure, along with reforms to boost competitiveness in financial services. In themselves these ideas are sensible, but they are totally out of tune with the divisive, punitive and fearful atmosphere Starmer and Reeves have created, where entrepreneurs and families have been made to feel their only value to the government is as cash cows to be milked for tax. Individuals like Angela Rayner and colourfully-coiffed former transport secretary Louise Haigh come across as overgrown student protesters rather than mature politicians. This does nothing to burnish the international credentials of UK PLC, at a time when we ought to look like a more stable business environment than the crisis-hit France and Germany. Labour needs to ditch the naïve socialist belief that the only part of the economy that matters is the public sector and start listening to the wealth creators. The hostility towards business is adding daily to the pall of negativity. Time to grow up and govern. Following the election of Donald Trump earlier this month, users began fleeing X , the social media platform owned by the Trump-supporting Musk. But as the Financial Times (FT) reported Saturday (Nov. 23), the biggest beneficiary of that exodus isn’t the Meta-owned Threads — conceived as an alternative to Twitter before its name change to X — but rather the upstart social platform Bluesky . Since election day, usage of Bluesky’s app in the U.S. and Great Britain jumped by nearly 300% to 3.5 million daily users , the FT said, citing data from Similarweb . This influx was driven by academics, journalists and left-leaning politicians leaving X. Before the election, Threads had five times the number of daily U.S. users as Bluesky, but that number has since shrunk, with Threads now just 1.5 times larger than Bluesky. As the FT notes, Bluesky’s growth comes after Meta CEO Zuckerberg chose to scale back the prominence of political content across its apps, which also include Facebook and Instagram. It was a move widely viewed as an attempt to stay out of politics and avoid being involved in free speech debates. And while Trump had once labeled Meta “an enemy of the people” and threatened Zuckerberg with imprisonment, he has since said he liked Zuckerberg “much better now” because he was “staying out of the election.” Bluesky was initially funded by Twitter founder Jack Dorsey. The platform had been invite-only until earlier this year, and jumped in popularity when that requirement was dropped. While Bluesky had been in development long before Musk began his bid to purchase the platform once known as Twitter, the site happened to launch as the billionaire rolled out a series of unpopular changes on X. When Bluesky began accepting members, it began to be viewed as a Twitter alternative, like Threads and Mastodon before it. FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Republican senators pushed back on Sunday against criticism from Democrats that Tulsi Gabbard , Donald Trump's pick to lead U.S. intelligence services , is “compromised” by her comments supportive of Russia and secret meetings , as a congresswoman, with Syria’s president, a close ally of the Kremlin and Iran. Sen. Tammy Duckworth, an Illinois Democrat and veteran of combat missions in Iraq, said she had concerns about Tulsi Gabbard, Trump's choice to be director of national intelligence . “I think she’s compromised," Duckworth said on CNN’s “State of the Union," citing Gabbard's 2017 trip to Syria, where she held talks with Syrian President Bashar Assad. Gabbard was a Democratic House member from Hawaii at the time. “The U.S. intelligence community has identified her as having troubling relationships with America’s foes. And so my worry is that she couldn’t pass a background check,” Duckworth said. Gabbard, who said last month she is joining the Republican Party, has served in the Army National Guard for more than two decades. She was deployed to Iraq and Kuwait and, according to the Hawaii National Guard, received a Combat Medical Badge in 2005 for “participation in combat operations under enemy hostile fire in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom III." Duckworth's comments drew immediate backlash from Republicans. “For her to say ridiculous and outright dangerous words like that is wrong," Sen. Markwayne Mullin, a Republican from Oklahoma, said on CNN, challenging Duckworth to retract her words. “That’s the most dangerous thing she could say — is that a United States lieutenant colonel in the United States Army is compromised and is an asset of Russia.” In recent days, other Democrats have accused Gabbard without evidence of being a “Russian asset.” Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a Massachusetts Democrat, has claimed, without offering details, that Gabbard is in Russian President Vladimir “Putin’s pocket.” Mullin and others say the criticism from Democrats is rooted in the fact that Gabbard left their party and has become a Trump ally. Democrats say they worry that Gabbard's selection as national intelligence chief endangers ties with allies and gives Russia a win. Rep. Adam Schiff, a California Democrat just elected to the Senate, said he would not describe Gabbard as a Russian asset, but said she had “very questionable judgment.” “The problem is if our foreign allies don’t trust the head of our intelligence agencies, they’ll stop sharing information with us,” Schiff said on NBC's “Meet the Press.” Gabbard in 2022 endorsed one of Russia’s justifications for invading Ukraine : the existence of dozens of U.S.-funded biolabs working on some of the world’s nastiest pathogens. The labs are part of an international effort to control outbreaks and stop bioweapons, but Moscow claimed Ukraine was using them to create deadly bioweapons. Gabbard said she just voiced concerns about protecting the labs. Gabbard also has suggested that Russia had legitimate security concerns in deciding to invade Ukraine, given its desire to join NATO. Republican Sen. Eric Schmitt of Missouri said he thought it was “totally ridiculous” that Gabbard was being cast as a Russian asset for having different political views. “It’s insulting. It’s a slur, quite frankly. There’s no evidence that she’s a asset of another country,” he said on NBC. Sen. James Lankford, another Oklahoma Republican, acknowledged having “lots of questions” for Gabbard as the Senate considers her nomination to lead the intelligence services. Lankford said on NBC that he wants to ask Gabbard about her meeting with Assad and some of her past comments about Russia. “We want to know what the purpose was and what the direction for that was. As a member of Congress, we want to get a chance to talk about past comments that she’s made and get them into full context,” Lankford said.
Bishop T.D. Jakes experienced a "slight health incident" during a Sunday sermon in Dallas on Sunday, his church wrote in a statement. The well-known bishop, who boasts over 4.5 million followers on X, formerly Twitter , posted a statement from The Potter's House megachurch where he preaches at, reading: "During today's service, Bishop T.D. Jakes experienced a slight health incident and received immediate medical attention following his powerful hour-long message." The statement added that "Jakes is stable and under the care of medical professionals. The entire Potter's House family is grateful for the outpouring of love, prayers, and support from the community. Thank you for your understanding and continued prayers." A spokesperson for the church on Sunday afternoon sent Newsweek the official statement and provided no additional comment. Unverified videos of Jakes' sermon online show the pastor unable to rise from his chair, potentially losing consciousness, with his body jolting. People rushed to his side before the livestream video cut off, and the audience can hear a prayer being said for Jakes. Newsweek has not been able to access the livestream as of Sunday afternoon. The Potter's House, which Jakes founded in 1996, is a non-denominational, multicultural church, that, according to its website, has more than 30,000 members. Given that the church livestreams sermons, it is likely many members join from afar. The church primarily operates out of Dallas, however, "accelerated growth and shifting demographics have necessitated expansion to additional sites in North Dallas (Frisco, Texas,) Fort Worth, Texas and Denver." Jakes is also an author of several books and is the owner and CEO of T.D. Jakes Enterprises. On November 21, T.D. Jakes Enterprises acquired an e-commerce technology start up, Castiron, which, according to the press release, will allow the company to launch "Nourysh." "We know all too well that building your own business is difficult. To help simplify this for many small and underrepresented entrepreneurs across the country, we have created an all-in-one e-commerce platform to help small businesses across the country scale up and create the access needed to their products, further helping nourish the dreams of entrepreneurship," Jakes said earlier this week in a press release about the acquisition. Meanwhile, Jakes is also among the names in a court filing in connection with music producer Rodney Jones' $30 million lawsuit against music mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs. Jones filed his lawsuit on February 26, making a number of accusations against Combs, including sexual misconduct and grooming. Jones has also accused Combs of participating in sex-trafficking activity. Attorneys for Combs have strongly denied the allegations, previously telling Newsweek , "We have overwhelming, indisputable proof that his claims are complete lies." Jakes, is not accused of anything in the lawsuit. According to the court documents, Jones alleges that Combs "planned to leverage his relationship with Bishop T.D. Jakes to soften the impact on his public image of Cassie Ventura's lawsuit ."

The Cowboys were out of playoff contention but they had won four of five games, including a win at Washington, the site of the Eagles' latest disaster, and they were playing with abandon, visiting a team haunted by collapses both distant and recent. The week before, the Birds blew a 14-point lead at Washington, where they lost quarterback Jalen Hurts to a concussion that lingered through Sunday, Hurts' first missed game of the season. Worse, the Eagles' top-ranked defense had lost its composure, and the game, at Washington. Finally, on Sunday, not only was the offense's quarterback absent, so was the defense's quarterback: Middle linebacker Nakobe Dean missed Sunday's game due to an abdominal strain. They had every excuse to lose. They didn't lose. Nick Sirianni wouldn't have it. Several players said afterward that Sirianni this past week reiterated this axiom: "You can't be great without the greatness of others." It's that sort of saying that has been the hallmark of Sirianni's astounding success. He's 47-20 in the regular season, has the best winning percentage among active coaches, and secured a fourth straight playoff appearance Sunday. From Monday to Sunday, no one in the Eagles Nation was greater than Sirianni. In a 13-win campaign that saw the Birds clinch the NFC East with a week left, it was, in many ways, Sirianni's finest hour of the season. "Amazing," said tackle Jordan Mailata. Game 5 was the start of a franchise-record 10-game winning streak, in which a more composed, mature Sirianni guided the team to blowout wins in Cincinnati and Dallas as well as decisive victories over the Commanders, Rams, Ravens, and Steelers. A pass-first coach, Sirianni had leaned on Saquon Barkley, who, in the fourth quarter, became the ninth player to eclipse 2,000 rushing yards in a season; at 2,005, he passed O.J. Simpson's best season, in 1973 with the Bills, but remains 100 yards behind Eric Dickerson's 1984 record, set with the Rams. Sirianni's next big decision: Will he let Barkley play in a probably meaningless finale against the Giants next week? "We'll see." "If it's in God's plan," Barkley said, "then it is. I didn't come here just to rush for 2,000 or break a record. It's up to Nick." It's a nice decision to have to make, especially considering the more pressing problems he dealt with this past week and the weight carried by Sunday's game against the Cowboys. Last week's messy loss, combined with Hurts' injury, added to a postgame dustup with former Eagles tight end Zach Ertz, put the focus on Sirianni again. He'd been a Coach of the Year candidate for a month. He'd seemingly earned a contract extension; his expires after next season. But a loss to the Cowboys and a win by the Commanders on Sunday night would have put the division title in jeopardy, and, perhaps, Sirianni's future. Sirianni proved equal to the task. "We had a great atmosphere, you know?" cornerback Quinyon Mitchell said. "Coach came in and said, 'We have to look ourselves in the mirror. Clean up some mistakes.' So, in practice, we honed in. This week was executed, mentally, really well." Sirianni prepared backup quarterback Kenny Pickett, whose style of play is entirely opposite to that Hurts'. He prepared third-string rookie Tanner McKee, who threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to A.J. Brown for a dagger late in the third quarter, then added a 25-yarder to DeVonta Smith in the fourth. He controlled Jalen Carter, who led the league with four unnecessary roughness penalties, and C.J. Gardner-Johnson, who was ejected at Washington for two unsportsmanlike conduct fouls. Carter's disappearance and Gardner-Johnson's absence led to 22 fourth-quarter points in the Commanders' comeback win. Carter was outstanding on Sunday. Gardner-Johnson? Amazing. Two interceptions. A pick-six on the first Commanders' possession. With Hurts out of action, he even broke down the pregame huddle. "He responded awesome," Sirianni said, and said it was a manifestation of Sirianni's "dog mentality" philosophy: "Learning from your mistakes, but putting them in the past, and being able to focus completely on where you're at right now. That won't only serve him well in football, it will serve him well in life." It served Sirianni well on Sunday. Really, he was never better. He featured Smith, knowing the Cowboys would sell out to stop Brown. Smith had six catches for 120 yards and two touchdowns. Brown had three catches for 36 yards and a score. Nothing mattered more than preparing Pickett. Pickett recognized a six-man blitz and hit Smith for a 22-yard touchdown and a 14-7 lead. He was part of four short-yardage Tush Pushes, three of which worked, the fourth for a touchdown as the first half expired with the Eagles leading, 24-7. He completed 10 of 15 passes for 143 yards and the touchdown before a hit from Micah Parsons aggravated a rib injury Pickett suffered at Washington and knocked him from the game. "It's very much a college-team feel," Pickett said afterward. "Everyone cares about each other. That's incredibly special." With Pickett hobbled and with McKee an unknown entity, Sirianni knew the Birds would have to ride Barkley. They did: They gave the ball to Barkley on six of the first seven plays of the third quarter, and he gained 30 yards as the Eagles made four first downs, used almost seven minutes, and came away with a 26-yard field goal for a 20-point lead. Barkley finished with 167 yards, the fifth-highest rushing total of his career, the third-highest total of this season, and his 11th 100-yard rushing game this season. He did it on 31 rushes, which tied for the third-highest total of his career. This was not the Cowboys team that began the season as a playoff favorite. It lacked quarterback Dak Prescott, defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence, receiver CeeDee Lamb, guard Zack Martin, and cornerback Trevon Diggs, five of Dallas' six best players, excepting Parsons. Also, Mike McCarthy remains their coach. So no, the Cowboys weren't good. But, since Sirianni was hired in 2021, the Eagles have lost to plenty of teams that weren't good. Occasionally, Sirianni has been the problem. On Sunday, he was the solution.
