Soto met with the New York Yankees, New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays, a person familiar with the negotiations said last week, speaking to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because details were not announced. Premier Doug Ford’s Progressive Conservatives have used their parliamentary majority to ram through a controversial law restricting bike lanes. “One per cent of the population cannot take up 50 per cent of the roads,” said Ford, understating the number of Torontonians who cycle and overstating the amount of space bike lanes take up in the city. His comments Monday came as Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria’s Bill 212, the Reducing Gridlock, Saving You Time Act, passed third reading at Queen’s Park by a vote of 66-27. The law, which is designed to reduce congestion, forces municipalities to get provincial approval for any new bike lanes that impact vehicular traffic. But it also gives Queen’s Park the power to remove existing lanes on University Avenue, Yonge Street and Bloor Street in Toronto. “It doesn’t make sense to rip up some of our busiest roads in the entire city to accommodate a very few percentage of people that use their bikes,” said Sarkaria, who has not yet determined if sections of the existing lanes will be retained or when dismantling would begin. “It is better for them to use secondary roads, which is also safer for them as well. We’ve got to get this city moving,” he said. The City of Toronto, which opposes the changes, estimates it would cost $48 million to dismantle $27 million in lane infrastructure, a claim Ford dismissed as ” .” His government will foot the tab for taking out the lanes, which he insists will be far lower. The players argued that letting her compete was a safety risk and unfair. While some media have reported those and other details, neither San Jose State nor the forfeiting teams have confirmed the school has a trans women’s volleyball player. The Associated Press is withholding the player’s name because she has not publicly commented on her gender identity. School officials also have declined an interview request with the player. Judge Crews referred to the athlete as an “alleged transgender” player in his ruling and noted that no defendant disputed that San Jose State rosters a transgender woman volleyball player. He said the players who filed the complaint could have sought relief much earlier, noting that the individual universities had acknowledged that not playing their games against San Jose State this season would result in a forfeit in league standings. He also said injunctions are meant to preserve the status quo. Mark Gross, founder and executive director of School of Ranch, moved to Central Oregon a few years ago after a lifetime living in cities, and found he needed to learn skills needed to live on a ranch. He connected with a local to learn how to cut down trees safely, then decided to create School of Ranch so others can learn those types of practical and artisan skills. Classes range from welding to soap-making to food preservation and animal husbandry. In the past few months, Gross has expanded that teaching to technology skills as his interns have learned how to handle the school’s website, advertising and registration for new programs and classes. “We’re volunteer-led and student-run, that’s the goal,” he said. “I found ways to work with kids and give them real life experiences in technology...what I’m doing here is just an extension of that same idea.” Gross has five interns who can work where they want, when they want and on what they’re interested in. He’s been running this program for around three months, he said, after several attempts at running an internship program. “I discovered how to do this by getting it wrong like thirty times,” he said. “Intern programs usually suck. ... You’re doing fake work, you’re sort of doing made up things, you’re shadowing people and following them around but you’re not really part of anything.” Gross is aware that high schoolers have a lot of other things going on in their lives. He’s designed an internship that allows them to be flexible in their work. Gross and the students have created how-to guides for how to use the software tools to manage the registration forms, webpages, the website’s calendar and advertising campaigns on Facebook and Instagram. Each workshop School of Ranch runs has a webpage created by interns. “Almost all the touch points that (participants) have prior going to the workshop are being put together, run, administrated by high school students,” he said. Gross wants to open the opportunity to as many high school students as he can. “I’m not trying with this thing to reach super A-plus students in super targeted career paths,” he said. “We’ll be bringing in kids with different socioeconomic backgrounds and different life experiences and giving them this kind of experience in a way that’s palatable to them.” Interns can virtually pick up tasks they’re interested in, and if they want to start something that’s new to them, they need to be trained first. Gross created tools with ChatGPT to speed up the process. “I hope to expand the range of activities that students are involved in,” Gross said. “In my experience this is a very novel way of approaching an internship program: the ‘grab me’ model, lack of a schedule, the students are involved and engaged in building the systems that they’re using, giving them real responsibility...If they get this wrong, people can’t register.” Cohen Herbert, 18, is one of School of Ranch’s interns, and said the program has been fun and helpful. He found out about it in his school’s Future Center, which helps students find work, internships and scholarships. He works on the internship for three to 10 hours a week, and said he wants to do it for as long as he can. “It’s very laid back and not stressful at all,” said Herbert, who is a high school student in Bend. He is also pursuing an associate’s degree from Central Oregon Community College. “It’s probably the best newbie job that gets into a direct field....It’s a good job, pays really well and gives me experience that looks really good for me and it’s just enjoyable all the way around.” The internship is organized through Youth Career Connect, East Cascades Works and the Youth Compass program. Youth Career Connect is partially funded by Bend-La Pine Schools and Jefferson County School District. It contributes funds, as does East Cascades Works, and the Central Oregon Intergovernmental Council’s Youth Compass program uses those funds for intern specialists who work with high schools to recruit students to look at potential internship opportunities. The specialists also make sure students are ready with interview practice and a completed resume. Businesses or nonprofits in the area, like School of Ranch, host the interns. The Youth Compass program has state and federal grant money that they use to pay interns. School of Ranch interns are paid $20 an hour: the grant pays $15, and School of Ranch pays $5. For every 60 hours they work, they earn half an elective credit toward their high school diploma. Gross is looking forward to expanding the program. “I’m amazed at how much of my work I can now trust my team with,” he said. “The original ideas I had, half of them are just wrong, just proven wrong by what actually happens. DENVER — So you're the most valuable player of that annual Thanksgiving Day backyard flag football game. Or played tackle football on any level. Or ran track. Or dabbled in basketball. Or toyed with any sport, really. Well, this may be just for you: USA Football is holding talent identification camps all over the country to find that next flag football star. It's "America's Got Talent" meets "American Idol," with the stage being the field and the grand prize a chance to compete for a spot on a national team. Because it's never too early to start planning for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, where flag football will make its Summer Games debut. Know this, though — it's not an easy team to make. The men's and women's national team rosters are at "Dream Team" status given the men's side has captured six of the last seven world championships and the women three in a row. To remain on top, the sport's national governing body is scouring every football field, park, track, basketball court and gym to find hidden talent to cultivate. USA Football has organized camps and tryouts from coast to coast for anyone ages 11 to 23. There are more than a dozen sites set up so far, ranging from Dallas (Sunday) to Chicago (Dec. 14) to Tampa (March 29) to Los Angeles (TBD) and the Boston area (April 27), where it will be held at Gillette Stadium, home of the New England Patriots. The organization has already partnered with the NFL on flag football initiatives and programs. The numbers have been through the roof, with engagement on social media platforms increasing by 86% since flag football was announced as an Olympic invitational sport in October 2023. The participation of boys and girls ages 6 to 17 in flag football last year peaked at more than 1.6 million, according to USA Football research. Of course, there are logistical issues to tackle before their inclusion at the LA Olympics, which open July 14, 2028. Among them, training camp, because the Olympics will be right in the middle of it. The big question is this: Will owners permit high-priced players to duck out for a gold-medal pursuit? No decisions have yet been made on the status of NFL players for the Olympics. For now, it's simply about growing the game. There are currently 13 states that sanction girls flag football as a high school varsity sport. Just recently, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles helped pave the way to get it adopted in Pennsylvania. Around the world, it's catching on, too. The women's team from Japan took third at the recent word championships, while one of the best players on the planet is Mexico quarterback Diana Flores. "Could flag football globally become the new soccer? That's something to aspire to," said Stephanie Kwok, the NFL's vice president of flag football. This type of flag football though, isn't your Thanksgiving Day game with family and friends. There's a learning curve. And given the small roster sizes, versatility is essential. Most national team members need to be a version of Colorado's two-way standout and Heisman hopeful Travis Hunter. Forget bump-and-run coverage, too, because there's no contact. None. That took some adjusting for Mike Daniels, a defensive back out of West Virginia who earned a rookie minicamp invitation with the Cleveland Browns in 2017. "If a receiver is running around, I'm thinking, 'OK, I can kind of bump him here and there and nudge him,'" Daniels explained. "They're like, 'No, you can't.' I'm just like, 'So I'm supposed to let this guy just run?!' I really rebelled at the idea at first. But you learn." The competition for an Olympic roster spot is going to be fierce because only 10 players are expected to make a squad. The best 10 will earn it, too, as credentials such as college All-American or NFL All-Pro take a backseat. "I would actually love" seeing NFL players try out, said Daniels, who's also a personal trainer in Miami. "I'm not going to let you just waltz in here, thinking, 'I played NFL football for five years. I'm popular. I have a huge name.' I'm still better than you and I'm going to prove it — until you prove otherwise." It's his way of working on avoiding a "defender" trying to snare the flag. That approach has earned the receiver out of Coastal Carolina four gold medals with USA Football. The 31-year-old fully plans on going for more gold in Los Angeles. "You grow up watching Usain Bolt (win gold) and the 'Redeem Team' led by Kobe Bryant win a gold medal, you're always thinking, 'That's insane.' Obviously, you couldn't do it in your sport, because I played football," said Mapp, who owns a food truck in the Dallas area. "With the Olympics approaching, that (gold medal) is what my mind is set on." It's a common thought, which is why everything — including talent camps — starts now. "Everybody thinks, 'Yeah, the U.S. just wins,'" Daniels said. "But we work hard all the time. We don't just walk in. We don't just get off the bus thinking, 'We're going to beat people.'" And then they saw their fans walk out on them again when the Bucs extended their lead to 30-0 and sent New York (2-9) to its sixth straight loss. The losing streak is the longest for the Giants since 2019, when they dropped a franchise-record nine straight games to finish 4-12. That led to the firing of coach Pat Shurmur after two seasons. Third-year coach Brian Daboll is clearly in trouble, with the Giants guaranteed a second straight losing season. They were 6-11 in a 2023 season that featured a lot of injuries. Daboll, who denies he has lost the team, isn’t the only one whose job is in jeopardy. General manager Joe Schoen is on the hot seat and so is this entire franchise, which is celebrating its 100th year. It’s one thing to lose. The Giants have scored a league-low 163 points, including only 60 in six games at MetLife Stadium, where they are winless this season. They have scored in double figures at home twice. Daboll’s team has been held scoreless in the first half in three of 11 games and it has been held without a first-half touchdown seven times. Daboll said he will continue to call the offensive plays. Stock up S Tyler Nubin. The rookie has had a team-high 12 tackles in each of the last two games. His 81 tackles for the season are just two behind team leader Bobby Okereke. Stock down RB Tyrone Tracy. The rookie leads Giants running backs with 587 yards on 116 carries — a 5.1-yard average for the fifth-round pick. But holding onto the ball has been a big issue. Tracy’s fumble in overtime cost New York a chance to win in Germany against Carolina. He also lost the ball in the third quarter at the Bucs 5-yard line with New York down 23-0.
