The agencies, Tass and RIA, cited an unidentified Kremlin source. The Associated Press was not immediately able to verify the reports but has contacted the Kremlin for comment. RIA also cited an anonymous Kremlin source that Moscow had received guarantees from Syrian insurgents of the security of Russian military bases and diplomatic posts in Syria. The report did not give further details. Assad reportedly left Syria early Sunday. Syrians have been pouring into streets echoing with celebratory gunfire after a stunning rebel advance reached the capital, ending the Assad family’s 50 years of iron rule . DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — Syrians poured into streets echoing with celebratory gunfire on Sunday after a stunning rebel advance reached the capital, ending the Assad family's 50 years of iron rule but raising questions about the future of the country and the wider region. Joyful crowds gathered in squares in Damascus, waving the Syrian revolutionary flag in scenes that recalled the early days of the Arab Spring uprising, before a brutal crackdown and the rise of an insurgency plunged the country into a nearly 14-year civil war. Others gleefully ransacked the presidential palace and residence after President Bashar Assad and other top officials vanished, their whereabouts unknown. Russia, a close ally, said Assad left the country after negotiations with rebel groups and had given instructions to transfer power peacefully. Abu Mohammed al-Golani , a former al-Qaida commander who cut ties with the group years ago and says he embraces pluralism and religious tolerance, leads the biggest rebel faction and is poised to chart the country's future. In his first public appearance since fighters entered the Damascus suburbs Saturday, al-Golani visited the sprawling Umayyad Mosque and called Assad's fall “a victory to the Islamic nation.” Calling himself by his given name, Ahmad al-Sharaa, and not his nom de guerre, he told hundreds of people that Assad had made Syria “a farm for Iran’s greed.” The rebels face the daunting task of healing bitter divisions in a country ravaged by war and still split among armed factions. Turkey-backed opposition fighters are battling U.S.-allied Kurdish forces in the north, and the Islamic State group is still active in some remote areas. Syrian state television broadcast a rebel statement early Sunday saying Assad had been overthrown and all prisoners had been released. They called on people to preserve the institutions of “the free Syrian state.” The rebels later announced a curfew in Damascus from 4 p.m. to 5 a.m. The rebels said they freed people held at the notorious Saydnaya prison, where rights groups say thousands were tortured and killed . A video circulating online purported to show rebels breaking open cell doors and freeing dozens of female prisoners, many of whom appeared shocked. At least one small child was seen among them. “This happiness will not be completed until I can see my son out of prison and know where is he,” said one relative, Bassam Masr. "I have been searching for him for two hours. He has been detained for 13 years.” Rebel commander Anas Salkhadi later appeared on state TV and sought to reassure Syria's religious and ethnic minorities, saying: “Syria is for everyone, no exceptions. Syria is for Druze, Sunnis, Alawites, and all sects.” “We will not deal with people the way the Assad family did," he added. Damascus residents prayed in mosques and celebrated in squares, calling, “God is great.” People chanted anti-Assad slogans and honked car horns. Teenage boys picked up weapons apparently discarded by security forces and fired into the air. Revelers filled Umayyad Square, where the Defense Ministry is located. I need someone to wake me up," said opposition fighter Abu Laith, adding the rebels were welcomed in Damascus with “love.” At the Justice Ministry, where rebels stood guard, Judge Khitam Haddad said they were protecting documents from the chaos. Outside, some residents sought information about relatives who disappeared under Assad. The rebels “have felt the pain of the people,” said one woman, giving only her first name, Heba. She worried about possible revenge killings by the rebels, many of whom appeared to be underage. Syria’s al-Watan newspaper, which was historically pro-government, wrote: “We are facing a new page for Syria. We thank God for not shedding more blood.” It added that media workers should not be blamed for publishing past government statements, saying it “only carried out the instructions.” A statement from the Alawite sect that has formed the core of Assad's base called on young Syrians to be “calm, rational and prudent and not to be dragged into what tears apart the unity of our country.” The rebels mainly come from the Sunni Muslim majority in Syria, which also has sizable Druze, Christian and Kurdish communities. In Qamishli in the northeast, a Kurdish man slapped a statue of the late leader Hafez Assad with his shoe. A senior diplomat from the United Arab Emirates, which had sought to rehabilitate Assad's image and has welcomed high-profile exiles in recent years, declined to comment on his whereabouts. Anwar Gargash said Assad's destination at this point is a “footnote in history,” comparing it to the long exile of German Kaiser Wilhelm II after World War I. The rebel advances since Nov. 27 were the largest in recent years, and saw the cities of Aleppo, Hama and Homs fall within days as the Syrian army melted away. Russia, Iran and Lebanon's Hezbollah militant group, which provided crucial support to Assad throughout the uprising, abandoned him as they reeled from other conflicts. "But he and the rebels now face a formidable challenge ahead.” The U.N.’s special envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, called Saturday for urgent talks in Geneva to ensure an “orderly political transition.” The Gulf nation of Qatar, a key regional mediator, hosted an emergency meeting of foreign ministers and top officials from eight countries with interests in Syria late Saturday. They included Iran, Saudi Arabia, Russia and Turkey. CINCINNATI (AP) — The Cincinnati Bengals have found all manner of ways to lose close games this season. Sunday's 44-38 loss to AFC North rival Pittsburgh can be blamed on a defense that missed tackles and allowed 520 yards of offense, and three turnovers by Joe Burrow. It's become a familiar story in this disappointing season. Cincinnati (4-8) keeps scoring lots of points but can't close out games. Seven of the Bengals’ eight losses this year have been by one score. Burrow has stopped talking about the possibility of going on a run and making the playoffs. He'd just like to win another game or two. “Playoffs are the furthest thing from my mind,” the fifth-year quarterback said. “You never know what can happen, so I’ll keep putting one foot in front of the other and try to be the best player I can be for the rest of the season, week in and week out.” The Bengals allowed Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson to throw for a season-high 414 yards and three touchdowns. After Wilson threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown, the Steelers (9-3) scored on seven of their last nine possessions. They didn't punt until early in the fourth quarter. Purdy is dealing with a right shoulder injury and the 49ers are also potentially without left tackle Trent Williams and Nick Bosa due to injuries. Bosa was listed as out of Thursday's practice with an oblique injury. Williams also didn't suit up Thursday. He played through an ankle injury last week after being listed as questionable. Joyful crowds gathered in squares in Damascus, waving the Syrian revolutionary flag in scenes that recalled the early days of the Arab Spring uprising, before a brutal crackdown and the rise of an insurgency plunged the country into a nearly 14-year civil war. Others gleefully ransacked the presidential palace and residence after President Bashar Assad and other top officials vanished, their whereabouts unknown. Russia, a close ally, said Assad left the country after negotiations with rebel groups and had given instructions to transfer power peacefully. Abu Mohammed al-Golani , a former al-Qaida commander who cut ties with the group years ago and says he embraces pluralism and religious tolerance, leads the biggest rebel faction and is poised to chart the country's future. "But he and the rebels now face a formidable challenge ahead.” The U.N.’s special envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, called Saturday for urgent talks in Geneva to ensure an “orderly political transition.” The Gulf nation of Qatar, a key regional mediator, hosted an emergency meeting of foreign ministers and top officials from eight countries with interests in Syria late Saturday. They included Iran, Saudi Arabia, Russia and Turkey. It has been a turbulent week for international traders, with the French government toppled in a vote of no confidence, plunging the euro zone’s second-largest economy into a period of deep political uncertainty. Coming on the back of a stalled German economy in a political stalemate with snap elections coming in February, it has created a very uncertain outlook for Irish exporters as they survey their sales options in their two largest European markets. The OECD last Wednesday cut its forecast for German economic growth next year. Deutsche Banks’s CEO, Christian Fleming at a banking summit in London during the week said Germany needs to adjust its business model, calling for less regulation and lower taxes on business. The political dispute which tipped President Macron‘s premier Michel Barnier over the edge, rejecting the 2025 annual budget, suggests it will now be even harder to address the country’s economic woes. With a deficit of over 6% of GDP, France already has the worst budget imbalance in the eurozone. Irish exporters were firing on all cylinders throughout 2024, with exports in September, being the highest monthly on record. Many were hoping for a stable European market, to counter the likelihood of tariffs damaging trade with the important US market. Many other exporters, however, are quietly euphoric about President Trump’s plans to cut taxes and lighten regulation and are banking on the continued rapid expansion of Irish goods exports to the market, which raced ahead by a whopping 64 % in September. Ireland is not the only country to have gained from the increases in cross-border trading in the past year. The United Nations (UNCTAD) announced last week that world trade is about to reach a record in 2024, breaking through the $3tr mark. They indicate that the increase is largely determined by the increase in trade in services, in which Ireland excels, and which accounted for half of the global growth. However, the UN report points to uncertainty looming over 2025, amid risks of trade wars and ongoing political turmoil in many markets. In particular, they point to potential US trade policy shifts under the Trump administration, including the much-projected tariff increases. Such measures they state risk triggering retaliation, with ripples affecting industries and economies along the supply chain. Of particular concern, and reinforced by the UN report, is the statement that countries most exposed to changes in US policy changes are likely to be those with large trade surpluses with the US. Based on the latest statistics Ireland is one of the top five countries in terms of goods trade surpluses, which is expected to exceed €47bn in the current year. The fact that Ireland buys more from the US in computer and business services, appears not to be recognised by Mr Trump's choice for commerce secretary, Howard Lutnick, stating on the pre-election campaign trail that it's "nonsense that Ireland of all places runs a trade surplus at our expense...when we end this nonsense, America will be a truly great country again". Most annoying is that Lutnick should know better, with his background in selling services internationally from his Irish-based company Cantor Fitzgerald. The big technology companies, including Apple, Intel, Amazon, Facebook and Google, that have driven much of Ireland’s exports across this and prior years, may have been hoping to get an easy ride under Trump. But, they may be mistaken, judging by his statement on his social media platform Truth Social, that Big Tech has run wild for years, suggests he wants to keep pursuing them with antitrust crackdowns. The common refrain amongst executives is that what happens in politics and what happens in business, are not the same thing. But, there is no doubt that an outbreak of political tranquillity in Germany and France would be helpful for European and Irish businesses. In the US, the post-Trump election jump in the stock market has benefited a wide range of companies, both in Ireland and internationally, despite the more outlandish statements of the US political leader. With an amusing lack of self-awareness, Kate Forbes, the Deputy First Minister of Scotland , has warned that the UK Government’s recent decision to increase employers national insurance risks harming economic growth and lacks “basic competence”. The worrying thing about this is that Kate Forbes along with Fergus Ewing are normally the SNP MSPs most in touch with economic reality. Forbes is correct when she says the rise in employers national insurance will harm economic growth. The extra tax will reduce private sector employment, curtail the ability of companies to invest, raise inflation and keep interest rates higher for longer. As is its usual habit, the Scottish Government rages that the UK Government has not provided enough extra funding through the Barnet formula to meet the full cost to public bodies in Scotland of the increased national insurance. This is like arguing, if petrol were rationed, that you deserve more than others because you have a bigger car. The answer of course is to get a smaller car. The reason the Barnet formula, usually very generous to Scotland, is unhelpful in this case is that we have a higher proportion of public sector employees than the UK as a whole and they are paid more. Instead of seeking to increase efficiency in the public sector, we ignore the need for reform and just hold out the begging bowl. This is not sustainable, not properly thought through and, frankly, embarrassing. When ministers in the Scottish Government claim the UK Government has done something incompetent or not thought something through properly, they really should be laughed at and supplied with a mirror. The Sturgeon and Yousaf-led governments were grossly incompetent and not thinking things through properly was their standard operating procedure. Poor old John Swinney is trying not to make things worse but it is already too late, the damage is done. When increasing income taxes on middle and higher earners in Scotland compared to those in England, did the SNP government think through properly what that would do? For too long we have seen our best and brightest young people head to London and elsewhere outside Scotland. We need to get some of them back and stop others from leaving if we are to build a stronger tax base which can pay for the public services we want. Higher income taxes act directly against this objective. The smart thing for the Scottish Government to have done if they wanted to raise more tax revenue would have been to reduce the higher rates of tax but no, petty minded thinking rules that out. When the Scottish Government reduced fares on Scotland’s ferries but instead of making up the lost revenue chose to stop building ferries was it beyond them to grasp the obvious outcome would be an ageing and less reliable fleet? Unfortunately, it was. When they finally realised that Scotland’s ferry service was literally falling apart, what idiots decided two gigantic dual-fuelled ferries which could cross the Atlantic were needed for the route to Arran? And that the contract to build them should be awarded before it was properly finalised to a yard which had not built that sort of vessel before? Has the penny not dropped for the Scottish Government that its interference in the housing rental market has not been properly thought through and is causing the opposite of what is desirable? What is needed is an increased supply of homes for rent at a reasonable price. Imposing rent controls and other regulations reduces new supply and gives existing landlords no incentive to maintain and improve their properties. (Image: Glen Sannox) For a short while those who already rent a home win through lower rent rises, but in the long run they suffer as the housing stock deteriorates and those who would like to rent a home but don’t have one lose out from day one because there are fewer homes for rent. Not thought through. Incompetent. Again. The Scottish budget is next week. This is quite a test. What we are likely to get is a regretful wringing of hands that the UK Government has been mean and if only we had full control of all the economic levers all would be fine but sadly your council tax is going to have to rocket and the roads will have more potholes. The reality is, were Scotland on its own and had full control of all the economic levers, we would have an economic disaster on our hands. But they haven’t thought that one through properly either.
