PITTSBURGH — Sidney Crosby scored his 600th NHL goal for Pittsburgh on Saturday night but the Penguins lost 6-1 to the Utah Hockey Club. Dylan Guenther scored twice, while Nick Bjugstad, Jack McBain, Mikhail Sergachev and Alexander Kerfoot also scored for Utah. Karel Vejmelka stopped 27 shots for Utah. Crosby is the 21st player in NHL history to score 600 goals. He reached the milestone with 10 seconds left on a five-on-three power play and now has seven goals in his last 12 games. Crosby finished a one-timer from the right side of the net, set up on a pass from Erik Karlsson at 3:11 of the second period. Karlsson surpassed Borje Salming for 15th place on the NHL’s career assists list among defensemen. Alex Nedeljkovic made 24 saves for Pittsburgh. Crosby and Alex Ovechkin are the only active players with at least 600 NHL goals. Crosby is the seventh player in NHL history to score 600 goals with one team and joined Mario Lemieux (690) as the only two Penguins to score 600 goals with the franchise. Pittsburgh is the second team in NHL history with multiple 600-goal scorers, joining Detroit’s Gordie Howe and Steve Yzerman. KYIV, Dec 29 — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Friday that “several” wounded North Korean soldiers died after being captured by Ukrainian forces, as he accused Russia of throwing them into battle with “minimal protection”. Ukraine and its western allies say North Korea has sent thousands of soldiers to support Russia’s army, in what is seen as a major escalation in the nearly three-year war following Moscow’s 2022 invasion. ”Today there were reports about several soldiers from North Korea. Our soldiers managed to take them prisoner. But they were very seriously wounded and could not be resuscitated,” Zelensky said in an evening address posted on social media. South Korea’s spy agency said earlier on Friday that a North Korean soldier who was captured while fighting in Russia’s war against Ukraine had died of his wounds. Zelensky did not specify how many North Koreans had died after being captured by Ukrainian troops. Zelensky had earlier said that nearly 3,000 North Korean soldiers had been “killed or wounded” so far as they joined Russia’s forces in combat in its western Kursk border region, where Ukraine mounted a shock incursion in August. South Korea’s intelligence service had previously put the number of killed or wounded North Koreans at 1,000, saying the high casualty rate could be down to an unfamiliar battlefield environment and their lack of capability to counter drone attacks. The White House on Friday confirmed the South Korean estimates, saying that Pyongyang’s troops were being sent to their deaths in futile attacks by generals who see them as “expendable”. ”We also have reports of North Korean soldiers taking their own lives rather than surrendering to Ukrainian forces, likely out of fear of reprisal against their families in North Korea in the event that they’re captured,” National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters. Putin message to Kim North Korea and Russia have strengthened their military ties since Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. A landmark defence pact between Pyongyang and Moscow signed in June came into force this month, with Russian President Vladimir Putin hailing it as a “breakthrough document”. North Korean state media said Friday that Putin sent a New Year’s message to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, saying: “The bilateral ties between our two countries have been elevated after our talks in June in Pyongyang.” Seoul’s military believes that North Korea was seeking to modernise its conventional warfare capabilities through combat experience gained in the Russia-Ukraine war. NATO chief Mark Rutte had also said that Moscow was providing support to Pyongyang’s missile and nuclear programmes in exchange for the troops. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said Monday that Pyongyang is reportedly “preparing for the rotation or additional deployment of soldiers” and supplying “240mm rocket launchers and 170mm self-propelled artillery” to the Russian army. Pyongyang’s involvement in Russia’s war against Ukraine had prompted warnings from Seoul. South Korea’s President Yoon Suk-yeol, currently suspended, said in November that Seoul was “not ruling out the possibility of providing weapons” to Kyiv, which would mark a major shift to a long-standing policy barring the sale of weapons to countries in active conflict. — AFPThe injuries continue raining down on the San Francisco 49ers. Running backs Christian McCaffrey and Jordan Mason were both sent to the injured reserve Monday afternoon, the former with a PCL injury in his right knee and the latter with a high ankle sprain. Both will miss a minimum of four games. Now sitting at 5-7 and fourth in the NFC West, San Francisco's playoff hopes might as well have been sent to the injured reserve with their premier running backs. Unfortunately for the Niners, McCaffrey's injury will run him a six-week recovery through the end of the regular season. Mason also figures to sit out the rest of the regular season, too, as returning for a possibly meaningless Week 18 game after a high-ankle sprain seems unlikely. Nevertheless, there are a few other ball carriers available for Kyle Shanahan to rely on for the team's final five games. Here's everything you need to know about the 49ers' current RB depth chart following injuries to McCaffrey and Mason. NFL HQ: Live NFL scores | Updated NFL standings | Full NFL schedule 49ers RB depth chart Rank Player* 1 Isaac Guerendo 2 Patrick Taylor Jr. (practice squad) 3 Kyle Jusczczyk (fullback) 1. Isaac Guerendo Rookie Isaac Guerendo will assume the starting role for the 49ers come Sunday's contest at home against the Bears. Through 12 appearances this season, the 24-year-old Louisville product has 246 yards on 42 carries, good for two touchdowns. His best performance of the year came in Week 6 against the Seahawks, where he totaled just under 100 yards on 10 carries. Though he has had little NFL experience, the next few weeks will provide ample time for Guerendo to continue adjusting to the league's speed and aggression in comparison to the college game. He figures to see 15-20 touches per game, making him a potential league-winner in fantasy leagues down the stretch, but it's unclear how much overall impact he'll have in terms of winning games for the 49ers. 2. Patrick Taylor Jr. Despite being waived on Nov. 8 and re-signed to the practice squad, it's likely the Niners will elevate Patrick Taylor Jr. to the full-time roster before this weekend. Prior to dropping down, the 6-2, 217-pound ball carrier appeared in eight games this season for minimal yardage. Should he find himself on the sideline Sunday, Taylor Jr. will play a larger role than he has so far. With only seven carries for 25 yards in 2024, he has five games to boost his resume before the end of the regular season. The Falcons are sticking with Kirk Cousins and may get a break thanks to a soft schedule

‘Tragic’: Putin apologises to Azerbaijan president for plane crash that killed 38In a significant development, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will take the witness stand for the first time in his long-standing corruption trial. Scheduled to testify starting Tuesday, Netanyahu faces the arduous task of balancing courtroom obligations with the ongoing conflict against Hamas in Gaza. Having been postponed due to the Gaza conflict, the judges have now mandated that Netanyahu begin his testimony, connecting thrice a week. The charges against him include bribery, fraud, and breach of trust, stemming from accusations involving gifts and regulatory favors for media allies in exchange for positive coverage. While Netanyahu denies all allegations and characterizes the investigations as politically motivated, his legal challenges continue to stir Israeli society deeply. Despite gaining a temporary respite from public scrutiny due to wartime unity, Netanyahu's trial now returns to the forefront of Israeli politics, challenging the country's judicial principles.
