Login or signup to continue reading At 16-years-old the Canadian was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma and she thought maybe she could become a doctor or a nurse to help people. "I knew I wanted to help people in a really meaningful capacity," she said. That's when she combined her initial interest in forensic science and her desire to help others and made the decision to study anthropology as a major during her undergraduate studies. "It brought those two worlds together because although we're working with deceased individuals the work we do can help with the police and their investigations, but we can also connect people back with their loved ones," she said. She fell in love with the field, graduating with a Bachelor of Science (Honours) and then a Master of Science from the University of Toronto, Canada. In 2020 she boarded a plane to Australia on a Vice-Chancellor's PhD Training Scholarship to take her next study step in Newcastle. "I had never been to Australia before this and it was a bit of a crazy decision looking back but now my whole life is here," she said. "Having grown up in Canada where six months of the year is winter, Newcastle was such a beautiful change with its beaches." On Monday, December 16 the 30-year-old will graduate from the University of Newcastle with a PhD in Law - combining aspects of forensic anthropology, criminology and geophysical sciences. "I've had a really great time, and oh man I did it," she said. Supervised by criminologist and forensic scientist Dr Xanthé Mallett, Ms Berezowski's PhD research helped tackle the problem of locating hidden graves by trialling two innovative technologies for searching underground: ground-penetrating radar and electrical resistivity tomography (ERT). "These are graves that are associated with homicides. An offender can choose to get rid of the body, and one of the ways to do that is in a grave - which is quite advantageous because graves are so hard to find," she said. "One of my favourite parts of my degree was the field work that I got to do. I got to go out to the Australian Facility for Taphonomic Experimental Research and do my data collection, which was always a really good time." "I also got to be connected with some really great researchers." She said she felt relieved to be graduating and hopes to secure a job as an academic. "I really love teaching and my dream role would be some kind of lecturing position at a university either in forensic science or in crimonology," she said. Dr Berezowski joins more than 3700 students graduating from the instituion this week. Graduates will join a network of more than 185,000 alums who stretch across 154 countries worldwide. Uttar Pradesh BJP president Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary celebrated the party's sweeping success in the state assembly bypolls, crediting the victory to the electorate's faith in Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Chaudhary emphasized the BJP's win in the Kundarki seat of Moradabad district, noting it as a repudiation of caste, region, and religion-based politics. He extended gratitude to the people of Uttar Pradesh for their trust and support, affirming the BJP's commitment to welfare policies. The BJP's triumph, winning seven of nine seats alongside ally RLD, cemented its political influence in the region, while signaling strong public backing for its developmental vision and leadership. (With inputs from agencies.)Judges at the International Criminal Court (ICC) have issued arrest warrants for Israel’s prime minister and former defence minister, as well as the military commander of Hamas. A statement said a pre-trial chamber had rejected Israel’s challenges to the court’s jurisdiction and issued warrants for Benjamin Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant. A warrant was also issued for Mohammed Deif of Hamas, although Israel has said he was killed in an air strike in Gaza in July. The judges said there were “reasonable grounds” the three men bore “criminal responsibility” for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity during the war between Israel and Hamas. Both Israel and Hamas have rejected the allegations. The Israeli prime minister’s office condemned the ICC’s decision as “antisemitic”, while Hamas said the warrants for Netanyahu and Gallant have set an “important historical precedent”. The impact of these warrants will in part depend on whether the ICC’s 124 member states – which do not include Israel or its main ally, the United States – decide to enforce them or not. In a statement, the White House said the US rejected the ICC decision. A White House National Security Council spokesperson said the US “fundamentally rejects” the court’s decision. “We remain deeply concerned by the prosecutor’s rush to seek arrest warrants and the troubling process errors that led to this decision,” a White House national security council spokesperson said. “The United States has been clear that the ICC does not have jurisdiction over this matter. In co-ordination with partners, including Israel, we are discussing next steps.” However, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said it was “not a political decision”. Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is wanted over alleged war crimes in Ukraine , received a warm welcome and was not arrested during an official visit to neighbouring Mongolia – an ICC member – in September. Mongolia was found to have failed with the Court’s Request for Cooperation in violation of the Rome Statute. Mongolian Erdenebalsuren Damdin still occupies the chair of ICC Judge. Following calls from, among others, Ukraine, the European Union, and the ICC to either deny entry to Putin or to arrest him, a Mongolian government spokesperson told Politico that the country was dependent on Russian energy and thus wasn’t prepared to arrest the Russian president. “Mongolia imports 95 percent of its petroleum products and over 20 percent of electricity from our immediate neighborhood.... This supply is critical to ensure our existence and that of our people,” the spokesperson said. The ICC does not possess an enforcement mechanism. South Africa, another ICC member, also failed to arrest then-Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir when he visited the country in 2015 despite him facing a warrant for alleged war crimes in the Darfur region. Multiply failures show limits of International Criminal Court.

Zain Esports racks up another year of success, impressive growthMadeline Gaudreau, the widow of Matthew Gaudreau, gave birth to their son, she announced on Instagram on Sunday. The birth of their son, Tripp, comes four months after Matthew Gaudreau and his brother, Johnny, of the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets, were tragically killed after a vehicle hit them while they were riding their bikes in Oldmans Township, New Jersey, in August. In December, the driver of the vehicle was charged by a grand jury with two counts of reckless vehicular homicide, two counts of aggravated manslaughter, tampering with physical evidence and leaving the scene of a fatal accident, per CNN's Jacob Lev . Matthew was 29 and Johnny was 31. "The National Hockey League family is shocked and saddened by the tragic passing of Columbus Blue Jackets forward Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew," NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said in a statement in August. "While Johnny's infectious spirit for the game and show-stopping skills on the ice earned him the nickname 'Johnny Hockey,' he was more than just a dazzling hockey player; he was a doting father and beloved husband, son, brother and teammate who endeared himself to every person fortunate enough to have crossed his path." Matthew played professional hockey in the ECHL, spending four years with the Worcester Railers and one season with the Reading Royals. Johnny played 11 seasons in the NHL for the Calgary Flames and the Blue Jackets. He scored 743 points across his career, collecting a career-high 115 during the 2021-22 season.Australia’s second innings has come to an early end on Day 5 with India’s superstar bowler Jasprit Bumrah firing down a stunning delivery to bowl Nathan Lyon for 41. Bumrah took out Lyon’s middle stump and ended Australia’s innings at 234 with India now chasing 340 for victory (and a series win). Watch the final day from 9.30am AEDT live and free on Seven and 7plus . Earlier, Australian players had kept their cards close to their chest about whether they would bat on or make an overnight declaration. But when Lyon and Scott Boland walked out to the middle of the MCG, the mystery was finally solved. However, with a healthy lead already established and a record run chase required for an India victory, the decision not to start Day 5 on the field mystified many. “I’m a bit surprised to be honest,” Aussie legend and star Seven commentator Ricky Ponting said. “I thought Australia would have pulled the pin and declared and got as much at India as they could today give themselves the best chance of winning the game. “They’re 333 runs ahead. We know it will be an all- time record if (they get that target). They have their reasons for it, having India in the field longer (and) as you know we have a slightly longer day today as well.” When commentator Tim Lane saw the Australians walking out to bat, he said “the answer to the question that has hung in the air overnight” had been answered. But Lane admitted a draw in this Test was “largely in India’s interest”. “That would mean Australia have to win the Test in Sydney (to win the series),” Lane said. MATCH CENTRE: All the stats from the Boxing Day Test “We’re told that there is rain hanging around up in the Harbour City.” Former Victorian wicketkeeper Darren Berry was equally mystified by the “pointless” decision to bat on. “What a waste of time that was and more importantly six vital overs to win the game were just burnt by that pointless decision,” Berry said on social media. “It may not matter in the wash up and I hope seriously hope it doesn’t but boy, if it does, then serious questions must be asked. Why oh why?” Bumrah finished the innings with 5-57 and nine wickets for the match. If India win, they will go 2-1 up in the series and, as the reigning champions, they will retain the Border-Gavaskar trophy regardless of the result in the fifth Test next week. But the highest successful Test run chase at the ground was nearly a century ago, when England made 7-332 to beat Australia in 1928. India do have the ability and the resilience to make big scores on the final day. In 2021 at the Gabba, they posted 7-329 to win the fourth Test against Australia and claim the series. There are also concerns about Australia’s bowling attack with Mitch Starc in need of physio attention during Day 3 and reaching for his back while bowling. Starc bowled 25 overs and went without a wicket in India’s first innings. Meanwhile, allrounder Mitch Marsh has been under an injury cloud, as well, and has been used sparingly with the ball. The veteran allrounder entered the series on the back of a period of rest following the birth of his first child and pulled up from the opening Test with a sore back.
