While banned from the chamber, Ms Thorpe stood outside one of the doors and yelled out the word "genocide" before the doors were closed. Ms Thorpe then made her way up the stairs to the press gallery and yelled out, “Free, free Palestine! From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free”. President of the Senate Sue Lines briefly paused and there were some wry smiles and laughter following the reactions of various Senators. Senator Jacqui Lambie could be heard in the background of the Senate saying, “She’s had her right taken away from her”. Ms Thorpe was suspended by the Senate after she yelled at One Nation Senator Pauline Hanson, threw torn-up documents at her and flipped the bird to the chamber. The suspension barred the independent Senator from sitting in the chamber on Thursday for the final parliamentary sitting day of the year. While Labor and the Coalition voted to suspend Ms Thorpe with 46 votes to 11, her former Greens party colleagues sided against the motion.
