Actor Nick Searcy says the film is 'emotionally powerful and historically accurate' on 'America Reports.' "Reagan" co-star Nick Searcy, who plays White House Chief of Staff James Baker in the feature film, says the movie is topping the charts because it shows former President Ronald Reagan’s love of America. "Reagan was a very popular president and I think the box office returns and the fact that it's number one on Amazon and in DVD sales right now bears that out," Searcy told "America Reports" on Tuesday. "I mean, the critics didn't really love Reagan . I think that's for political reasons. But when you look at the audience scores, the people who've seen the movie really love it, and it's really catching on out there." The actor reflected on the parallels between Reagan and President-elect Donald Trump. MSNBC CONTRIBUTOR TRASHES NETWORK, SHREDS ‘MORNING JOE’ COLLEGUES OVER TRUMP MEETING: ‘THIS IS NOT WORKING’ FILE - This December 1986 photo shows first lady Nancy Reagan holding the Reagans' pet Rex, a King Charles spaniel, as she and President Reagan walk on the White House South lawn. ( (AP Photo/Dennis Cook, File)) "It opens with the assassination attempt on Reagan and you can't help but remember the very recent assassination attempt on Trump," Searcy said. "I think that the way Reagan was attacked by his critics, also the way the movie has been attacked by its critics, it definitely reminds you of the disparity between the way the mainstream media looked at Reagan and looks at Trump and the way the middle of the country, the rest of the country, the majority of the country, looks at both men. I think the parallels between them are pretty striking." Searcy also noted how Reagan battled against communism as president and how that struggle continues to this day. "I think we're still having that same battle, and I think the reason that the movie is resonating with so many people is that it's not just a history lesson, although it is that. It's also a love story. It's a love story, not only between Ron Reagan and Nancy Reagan, but between Ronald Reagan and America," he said. "I think Ronald Reagan was in love with this country and really sacrificed everything to try to bring it back, to make America great again, if you will. I think that's why the audience loves it so much. It's emotionally powerful as well. It is historically accurate." Ronald Reagan. (Getty Images) CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP The movie offers a "fully humanized" version of Reagan, the actor saisd. "Reagan was a man of great substance, not only intellectually, but emotionally ... It's very important to remember how much Ronald Reagan loved America, and he is responsible for a lot of the great things that we still have about this country today."People determined to spread toxic messages online have taken to masking their words to bypass automated moderation filters. A user might replace letters with numbers or symbols, for example, writing “Y0u’re st00pid” instead of “You’re stupid”. Another tactic involves combining words, such as “IdiotFace”. Doing this masks the harmful intent from systems that look for individual toxic words. Similarly, harmful terms can be altered with spaces or additional characters, such as “h a t e ” or “h@te”, effectively slipping through keyword-based filters. While the intent remains harmful, traditional moderation tools often overlook such messages. This leaves users — particularly vulnerable groups — exposed to their negative impact. To address this, we have developed a novel pre-processing technique designed to help moderation tools more effectively handle the subtle complexities of hidden toxicity. An intelligent assistant Our tool works in conjunction with existing moderation. It acts as an intelligent assistant, preparing content for deeper and more accurate evaluation by restructuring and refining input text. By addressing common tricks users employ to disguise harmful intent, it ensures moderation systems are more effective. The tool performs three key functions. It first simplifies the text. Irrelevant elements, such as excessive punctuation or extraneous characters, are removed to make text straightforward and ready for evaluation. It then standardises what is written. Variations in spelling, phrasing and grammar are resolved. This includes interpreting deliberate misspellings (“h8te” for “hate”). Finally, it looks for patterns. Recurring strategies such as breaking up toxic words (“I d i o t”), or embedding them within benign phrases, are identified and normalised to reveal the underlying intent. These steps can break apart compound words like “IdiotFace” or normalise modified phrases like “Y0u’re st00pid”. This makes harmful content visible to traditional filters. Importantly, our work is not about reinventing the wheel but ensuring the existing wheel functions as effectively as it should, even when faced with disguised toxic messages. Catching subtle forms of toxicity The applications of this tool extend across a wide range of online environments. For social media platforms, it enhances the ability to detect harmful messages, creating a safer space for users. This is particularly important for protecting younger audiences, who may be more vulnerable to online abuse. By catching subtle forms of toxicity, the tool helps to prevent harmful behaviours like bullying from persisting unchecked. Businesses can also use this technology to safeguard their online presence. Negative campaigns or covert attacks on brands often employ subtle and disguised messaging to avoid detection. By processing such content before it is moderated, the tool ensures that businesses can respond swiftly to any reputational threats. Additionally, policymakers and organisations that monitor public discourse can benefit from this system. Hidden toxicity, particularly in polarised discussions, can undermine efforts to maintain constructive dialogue. The tool provides a more robust way for identifying problematic content and ensuring that debates remain respectful and productive. Better moderation Our tool marks an important advance in content moderation. By addressing the limitations of traditional keyword-based filters, it offers a practical solution to the persistent issue of hidden toxicity. Importantly, it demonstrates how small but focused improvements can make a big difference in creating safer and more inclusive online environments. As digital communication continues to evolve, tools like ours will play an increasingly vital role in protecting users and fostering positive interactions. While this research addresses the challenges of detecting hidden toxicity within text, the journey is far from over. Future advances will likely delve deeper into the complexities of context—analysing how meaning shifts depending on conversational dynamics, cultural nuances and intent. By building on this foundation, the next generation of content moderation systems could uncover not just what is being said but also the circumstances in which it is said, paving the way for safer and more inclusive online spaces. The Senate and stakeholders in the nation’s education sector, on Thursday, endorsed the bill seeking to establish Federal Polytechnic, Onueke, Ezza South, Ebonyi State. The endorsement was made during a one day public hearing on the Federal Polytechnic (Vocational/ICT) Onueke (Establishment) Bill 2024 (SB 71) organised at the National Assembly Complex by the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND. The stakeholders that expressed support for the establishment of the institution are the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission and the National Board for Technical Education, among others. They all commended the sponsor of the bill, Senator Kenneth Eze, for coming up with the initiative, saying that the bill if passed and assented to, would facilitate training of the young people and equipping them with technical education that would engender self-employment and rapid national development. Senator Eze, who represents Ebonyi Central Senatorial District on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), explained that the proposal when passed into law, has significant potential in advancing human capital development and providing an assured future for the youth in Nigeria, and Ebonyi Central in particular. He highlighted the socio-economic benefits of the initiative to the citizenry, saying: ” It is with great honour and a profound sense of responsibility that I stand before you today at this public hearing to advocate for a cause that holds huge potential to advance our human capital development index and an assured bright future for the Nigerian youths — the establishment of federal polytechnic (Vocational/ICT), Onueke in Ezza South Ebonyi state. “As we are gathered here, we are reminded of the pressing need for quality technical, Vocational and skill-based education training in our ever-evolving world. “The rapid advancement in technology constant demand for skilled labour and the widening gap of unemployment in the nation, highlight the importance and urgent need to establish institutions that can meet the challenges head-on, and help reduce the surging unemployment rate in the country, especially among our youths. “According to the National Bureau of Statistics NBS, the unemployment rate in Nigeria moved up in the first quarter of 2024 to 5.3% from 5.0% in the fourth quarter of 2023. At the global level according to The Spectator Index (a global youth unemployment index), Nigeria is standing second with a 53% youth unemployment rate to South Africa at number one with a 61% youth unemployment rate. These worrying statistics should be an issue of serious concern to the nation and all Nigerians. “Unemployment among our youths is a significant factor in the increase of crimes and social vices across the country, which poses a great threat to the socioeconomic development of the nation. “However, with Vocational and skill-based education training institutions like Federal Polytechnic (Vocational/ICT), Onueke, modelled to impact our youths with self-reliant and self-employable skills, our Nation is expected to take a leap out of this disturbing rate of unemployment and join the league of nations whose economies are driven by Technology and ICT. “In line with our national development priorities, UNESCO’s works on global strategy for Technical and Vocational Education Training (2016-2021) focus on the key areas which include; fostering youth employment and entrepreneur, promoting equality and gender equality, and facilitating the transition to green economy and sustainable societies. UNESCO pays premium attention to helping to enhance the relevance of Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) to equip all youths and adults with skills required for employment, decent work, entrepreneurship and lifelong skills. “It is worthy to note ladies and gentlemen that Federal Polytechnic (Vocational/ICT), Onueke is an institution of necessity conceived by the need to align our nation to UNESCO’s global efforts to equip our youths with relevant skills to explore the huge opportunities in the global skilled-labour market. This is crucial in job creation and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) “Mr. President, my Distinguished colleagues, ladies and gentlemen, Federal Polytechnic (Vocational/ICT), Onueke is not merely an academic institution; it is a beacon of hope that will provide endless opportunities for our youths. “This Polytechnic is a transformative platform that will equip our youths with the skills necessary to thrive in today’s competitive job market. “At this point, I want to draw our attention to some key points that underscore why the establishment of Federal Polytechnic (Vocational/ICT), Onueke is important not only to the youths and people of Ebonyi Central but our nation at large. “Firstly, the focus on vocational, ICT, and skill-based education training is imperative in a nation where unemployment rates are alarmingly high as we have in our nation. By providing students with hands-on experience and practical skills, we can empower them to become self-sufficient and contribute positively to our economy. “This institution will serve as a catalyst for job creation, innovation, and economic growth in Onueke and beyond. Secondly, education is not just about acquiring knowledge; it is about fostering an environment where creativity and critical thinking can flourish. The Federal Polytechnic Onueke will be designed to encourage collaboration between students, educators, and industry experts. “By forging strong partnerships with local businesses, industries and organizations, we can ensure that our curriculum remains relevant and aligns with the needs of the modern-day job market. “The demand for technical and vocational skills is higher than ever before. Yet, we are faced with a pressing challenge: how do we equip our future leaders, innovators, and skilled professionals with the tools they need to thrive? “The Federal Polytechnic (Vocational/ICT), Onueke presents us with an opportunity to create a hub of learning that focuses on vocational excellence, technical skills, and the information and communication technology that drives major economies of the world today. “This Bill is not just about establishing a new institution; it is about responding to the needs of our communities and our economy. By investing in vocational education, we are making a commitment to our youths—the commitment to provide them with pathways to success and dignified employment. “The choice of Onueke, Ezza South, the headquarters of Ebonyi Central Senatorial Zone in the establishment of this institution is due to its strategic location because it is central to all parts of Ebonyi State and it is densely populated. “We must ask ourselves: Are we ready to take this leap of faith? Are we prepared to invest in the future of our nation? As I stand here today, I am reminded of the words of Nelson Mandela, who said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” This bill embodies that sentiment. “It is our collective responsibility to ensure that our young people have access to quality education that prepares them for the realities of the workforce. “I urge you the President of the 10th Senate, my Distinguished colleagues and all stakeholders, educators, industry leaders, and community members—to support this vital initiative. By supporting the Federal Polytechnic (Vocational/ICT) Onueke (Establishment) Bill 2024, we are not only investing in education but also empowering our young people to take charge of their destinies. Together, we can forge a path toward a brighter and more prosperous future for our youths.”

Formula One has a history of nasty feuds and intense rivalries among teammates. But last night at the Lusail International Circuit, Lando Norris displayed a rare gesture of sportsmanship and gratitude as he allowed his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri to pass him just before the chequered flag to win the Sprint at the Qatar Grand Prix. Later, Norris revealed that he had disobeyed the team order to give Piastri his victory as payback for the Australian’s assistance during the Brazilian Grand Prix sprint. At the time, Norris was still in the hunt for the drivers’ title, but with Max Verstappen having wrapped up his fourth successive World Championship in Las Vegas last weekend, the Brit decided to return the favour to Piastri. The Sprint 1-2 also consolidated McLaren’s bid for the constructors’ title for the first time since 1998, extending their advantage over Ferrari to 30 points with two Grands Prix remaining. On the final lap, Norris was told over the team radio: “Finish in this order. We are happy.” McLaren had their reasons, as Piastri was under intense pressure from Mercedes’ George Russell throughout the race, with Russell coming close to overtaking him in the first corner on at least three occasions. But Norris says he had made up his mind to give Piastri the Sprint victory if the chance arose. Norris led from pole to flag before slowing to allow Piastri to win by 0.136 seconds, ahead of Mercedes’ Russell in third. “I know it was a bit closer than what I was wanting,” said Norris later. “But I planned to do it since Brazil. What I thought was best is probably a little bit sketchy. The team told me not to do it, but I thought I could get away with it, and we did. So honestly, I don’t mind. I’m not here to win Sprint races; I’m here to win races and a championship, but that’s not gone to plan. I did the best we could, and I look forward to tomorrow.” Piastri said his teammate’s gesture showed there is a ‘lack of egos’ at McLaren. “I was aware it could happen,” Piastri said, who had also won the 100km dash in Qatar last year. “I was a bit surprised that, with George (Russell) half a second back, it did, but I was aware it was a possibility, so it wasn’t completely unexpected. Maybe a little bit in the circumstances of the race, but yeah, I think it just speaks to our teamwork and fairness for the team, and obviously doesn’t change the points. It just shows off our teamwork and lack of egos within the team.” Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz finished fourth, ahead of teammate Charles Leclerc, who had won a thrilling battle with seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton in the second Mercedes. Haas’s Nico Hülkenberg and Red Bull’s Verstappen rounded out the points-paying positions in seventh and eighth, respectively. Two changes were made to the Sprint starting grid before the race, with Sergio Perez and Franco Colapinto starting from the pit lane due to car adjustments during parc fermé conditions. When the tyre blankets were removed, most drivers were on mediums, except Zhou Guanyu, whose Kick Sauber gambled on softs. At lights out, Norris surged into the lead, while teammate Piastri quickly overtook Russell for second after a bold move into Turn 2. Hamilton, determined to bounce back from his Sprint qualifying disappointment, made a stellar start, climbing to fifth ahead of Verstappen and Leclerc. Meanwhile, Verstappen struggled, falling to ninth, and Perez, starting from the pit lane, remained at the back. As Russell applied pressure on Piastri by Lap 4, replays showed Verstappen battling oversteer, limiting his early progress. Elsewhere, Zhou’s soft-tyre strategy proved ineffective, prompting an early switch to mediums. Hamilton began losing ground, with Leclerc overtaking him on Lap 13 after a tense wheel-to-wheel battle. Russell continued his pursuit of Piastri, briefly flaring tempers with a late defensive move from the Australian. Up front, Norris reported front tyre struggles, while Perez’s woes deepened with a pit stop for a new front wing. In the final laps, Norris relinquished the lead to Piastri, allowing his teammate to take the win as a reward for their teamwork.
