By Blake Brittain (Reuters) - A federal jury in Marshall, Texas, on Friday awarded computer memory company Netlist $118 million in damages from Samsung Electronics in a patent lawsuit over technology for improving data processing in high-performance memory products. The verdict follows a $303 million verdict against Samsung for Irvine, California-based Netlist in a related case last year. Netlist also won $445 million from chipmaker Micron in May in a separate lawsuit over some of the same patents. Spokespeople for Samsung and Netlist did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the Friday verdict. The jury also determined that Samsung's infringement was willful, which could lead to a judge increasing the award by up to three times. Netlist sued Samsung in 2022, alleging that the Korean tech giant's memory modules used in cloud computing servers and other data-intensive technology infringed its patents. Netlist said its innovations increase the power efficiency of memory modules and enable users to "derive useful information from vast amounts of data in a shorter period." Samsung denied the allegations, arguing that the patents were invalid and that its technology worked differently than Netlist's inventions. Samsung has also filed a related lawsuit in Delaware federal court accusing Netlist of breaking an obligation to offer fair licenses for technology required to comply with international standards. JOHN, B.C. — Senior Volleyball squads from North Peace Secondary School (NPSS) have returned with outstanding performances from B.C. provincials played last weekend. Following up on their 11th-place showing in 2023, the NPSS Senior Girls’ team finished sixth overall at the ‘AAAA’ competition, their strongest showing in at least 15 years. Head coach Alexandra Olsen commended her squad for playing “outstanding” and said the squad played at a high level, losing just twice throughout the tournament. She added that the Grizzlies won the BC Secondary Sports Fair Play award for the second consecutive year. “This was a huge achievement for NPSS and the program,” said Olsen. “There has been consistent growth with the program and it showed in our provincials performance.” “I have so much pride to represent these girls. They are outstanding athletes and humans and I look forward to seeing what the future holds.” Going 3-0 in pool play, NPSS needed a win over North Vancouver’s Argyle to gain a quarter-final position, winning in five sets. This set up a showdown with Kelowna’s Okanagan Mission Secondary. The Grizzlies lost in four sets. They won their next game against Kelowna Secondary before losing to Surrey’s Earl Marriott Secondary. Elsewhere, the Senior Boys Grizzlies represented the north region after playoff champions Prince George Secondary School were unable to go to Vancouver Island for the ‘AAA’ provincials. With a goal of “representing the north well” head coach Scott Hyde says mission accomplished, as the team won its final game to finish 15th overall. “Even with the lower ranking, the boys never got blown out,” said Hyde. “They held their own against every team they faced. This is great news when we think about the future of the team.” With comments from opposing coaches and officials on the teams work ethic and winning desire, the team also snagged the Fair Play Award for their tournament, something Hyde says the team was “very happy” to bring the award home. More information about the NPSS Grizzlies Volleyball teams can be found on the team’s Facebook pages.Together, Three Samsung Monitors and "The Lion King: Legend of Mufasa" traverse the digital landscape, encountering obstacles and trials that test their resolve. The Los Angeles Lakers have been cropping up all over the NBA trade rumors as they attempt to shore up their team beyond LeBron James and Anthony Davis to ensure a positive push into the playoffs. The Washington Wizards center Jonas Valanciunas has been one of the biggest targets for the Lakers. The 32-year-old was acquired by the Wizards to help mentor their second overall pick, Alex Sarr, helping him develop on both ends of the court. Additionally, Valanciunas has provided much-needed support in the frontcourt, allowing Sarr to ease into his role as a rookie. Can The Los Angeles Lakers Land Jonas Valanciunas? In his recent, NBA Trade Rumor Round Up for Hoops Hype, Michael Scotto described a trade scenario that may unmoor the 6 foot 11 inch Lithuanian out of Washington to southern California. Keep an eye on Los Angeles potentially dangling [Gabe] Vincent and future second-round picks to try and land Wizards center Jonas Valanciunas , a coveted Lakers target. Vincent has been a disappointment for the Lakers since signing a three-year, $33 million deal due to injuries and inefficient shooting. Los Angeles will look to include him as a salary filler with draft pick compensation in trade talks. The Lakers have been trying to unload Vincent since last season, even before the coaching change. Valanciunas has averaged 20 minutes off the bench and in that time he averages 12 points, 2.2 assists, and 2.2 rebounds per game. He also adds 5.3 defensive rebounds per game while on the court. The defensive rebounding fills a large gulf that exists between Davis (9) and James (7.1) and the next best rebounder, Rui Hachimura (3.3). The two-win Wizards would benefit from landing more picks, either to use or package for a big trade themselves. This article first appeared on LAFB Network and was syndicated with permission.None

● St. Katharine Drexel Catholic High School teacher Cynthia Bettio has received Esri Canada’s Making a Difference Award. ● Esri Canada provides geographic information system (GIS) mapping tools used by municipalities like Stouffville to analyze and display geographic data. ● Bettio was recognized for an urban planning project where students created land-use plans for hypothetical Stouffville development sites. ● Students presented their concepts, which utilized Esri’s GIS software, to Stouffville’s Council in June. ● Bettio emphasizes connecting coursework to real-world and local issues to foster critical thinking and deeper understanding in students. Cynthia Bettio, head of Canadian and World Studies at St. Katharine Drexel Catholic High School (SKD), received Esri Canada’s Making a Difference Award for innovative use of GIS technology in education. Esri Canada provides geographic information system mapping and analytics solutions to more than 14,000 organizations. GIS enables data analysis and allows for the geographic display of information. Municipalities such as Stouffville use Esri’s services for a variety of purposes, including public-facing tools like the Town’s Development Activity Map. The award recognizes individuals and organizations that use Esri’s ArcGIS tools “to make a positive impact on their communities,” according to a recent Esri Canada press release. Bettio was honoured for her role in a multi-class urban planning project that utilized the company’s software during the 2023-2024 school year. After months of study, 24 SKD students presented Town Council with land-use plans for three hypothetical Stouffville development sites. Their work included collaboration with Town Staff, and final renderings and virtual tours were showcased to Councillors and the public during a packed June 2024 meeting. Their concepts were informed by investigation into surrounding land uses and focused on housing, parkland, and community amenities. Climate change mitigation strategies and renewable energy sources were also considered and implemented within their designs. “By incorporating Esri’s cloud-based mapping and analysis software...into her geography and history classes, Ms. Bettio transforms abstract subjects into dynamic, hands-on learning experiences,” the press release detailed. “She engages students with projects that integrate real-world data and local history, encouraging them to think critically, tackle complex problems, and make meaningful connections between their coursework and the world around them.” Bettio was also recognized for her efforts in a Grade 10 Advanced Placement Canadian History class project that tracked the evolution of various Richmond Hill parcels over more than a century. Students presented their final deliverables to the Richmond Hill Historical Association in 2023 using GIS tools. “If we want kids to care about the subjects that they are learning, we have to be able to show them where they connect to them,” Bettio said. “If we focus on local issues that are relevant to students’ lives, we can ask them to step back and examine the bigger picture with greater depth and understanding.”In light of these trends, it becomes imperative for consumers to rethink their approach to purchasing and displaying plant-based décor. Instead of succumbing to the allure of fleeting fads and unsustainable practices, individuals are encouraged to invest in durable and environmentally-friendly alternatives that can stand the test of time. This includes supporting local nurseries that prioritize sustainability, opting for potted plants that can be nurtured and cared for over the long term, and seeking out eco-conscious decorations that promote a green lifestyle.Glentoran manager Declan Devine said he was delighted to see Jordan Jenkins and Wassim Aouachira find the net in the side's 3-1 victory over Crusaders at Seaview. Coming into the game, the east Belfast side were the lowest scorers in the Irish Premiership's top eight with forwards at the Oval coming in for criticism in recent weeks. But, after coming off the bench in the second half, Jenkins cancelled out Jordan Forsythe's 24th minute header with his first league goal since August before summer signing and fellow substitute Wassim opened his account for the Glens to round off the comeback. "I'm delighted for them because they've waited for their chance and JJ [Jenkins] has got a few important goals for us this year," said Devine. "I don't think it's very fair that the front players have come in for a bit of abuse because it's all over the pitch, it's a team game and we saw that tonight. "We're creating a lot of opportunities but we've missed chances from set-pieces too with defenders up in the box. All in all, if anyone is getting abuse, we all take it as a group." Glentoran have now lost just once in their past seven games in all competitions and won in north Belfast despite the absence of players like Jay Donnelly, Frankie Hvid and James Singleton. "There was probably a different team picked yesterday for the game but the lads were ready and that's really pleasing," added Devine. "We came into the game missing a lot of bodies, five or six players who would normally be starting in the team. "We preach a lot about the depth of our squad and that when players get an opportunity, that they take their opportunity. That was the most pleasing factor."
