Mumbai, Nov 23 (PTI) The Shiv Sena led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde knocked out rival Shiv Sena (UBT) of Uddhav Thackeray in 36 constituencies in Maharashtra polls, putting to rest the debate over which is the real party founded by the late Bal Thackeray. Shinde’s Sena, a constituent of the ruling Mahayuti alliance, won 57 of the 81 seats it contested. Sena (UBT), a partner in the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi, managed to bag only 20 despite fielding 95 candidates. In 14 seats, it defeated Shiv Sena candidates. In one of his biggest political gambles, Shinde rebelled against Uddhav in June 2022 and aligned with the BJP along with his backers to become the chief minister. The move split the Sena and sparked almost daily bickerings between the two factions. Subsequently, Shinde got the party name and its ‘bow-and-arrow’ symbol from the Election Commission. Shinde had retained most of the sitting MLAs, who had chosen to be with him when he led the rebellion two years ago. And they delivered for him on Saturday when the votes were counted. Chandrakant Sonawane who replaced his wife and sitting MLA Lata Sonawane defeated Prabhakar Sonawane of Sena UBT in Chopda. Kishore Patil of Shiv Sena won against Vaishali Suryavanshi in Pachora, while Sanjay Gaikwad defeated Jayshree Shelke in Buldhana. Ashish Jaiswal beat Vishal Barbate in Ramtek seat. His party colleague Sanjana Jadhav trounced Udaysing Rajput in Kannad, while Sanjay Bangar emerged victorious against Santosh Tarfe in Kalamnuri. Minister Abdul Sattar defeated Suresh Bankar in Sillod. Pradeep Jaiswal, who fought against Balasaheb Thorat, was the winner in Aurangabad Central. Sanjay Shirsat beat Raju Shinde in Aurangabad West seat, while Vilas Bhumre came on top in his fight against Dattatrey Gorde in Paithan. In Vaijapur, Ramesh Bornare was the top vote-getter, relegating Dinesh Pardeshi to the second position. Ganesh Dhatrak was bested by Suhas Kande in Nandgaon. Dada Bhuse defeated Prashant Hiray in Malegaon outer. In the tribal-dominated Palghar constituency, Rajendra Gavit beat Jayendra Dubla, while Vilas Tare defeated Vishwas Valvi in Boisar. In Bhiwandi rural of Thane district, where Eknath Shinde holds sway, Shantaram More of his party defeated Uddhav’s man Mahadev Ghatal. In Ambernath, Balaji Kinikar was the winner against Rajendra Wankhede. Rajesh More defeated Subhash Bhoir in Kalyan Rural. Shinde himself registered a massive victory in his Kopri-Pachpakhadi, defeating Kedar Dighe with a margin of 1.2 lakh votes. Prakash Surve trounced Udesh Patekar In Magathane, while Ashok Patil vanquished Ramesh Korgaonkar in Bhandup West. Murji Patel, who had earlier lost to Rutuja Latke in Andheri East, bounced back as the winner. Tukaram Kate defeated Prakash Phaterpekar in Chembur. Both Latke and Phatarpekar were sitting MLAs who had stayed with Uddhav. In Kurla, Mangesh Kudalkar beat Pravina Morajkar, while Mahendra Thorve defeated Nitin Sawant in Karjat. Bharat Gogawale got more votes than Snehal Jagtap to bag the Mahad seat. In Nevasa, Vithal Langhe defeated Yashwant Gadakh, the sitting MLA. Shambhuraj Desai trounced Bhanupratap Kadam in Patan. In coastal Dapoli, Yogesh Kadam defeated Sanjay Kadam. Minister Uday Samant won against Bal Mane in Ratnagiri, while Kiran Samant beat sitting MLA Rajan Salvi in Rajapur. The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance on Saturday retained power in Maharashtra, pocketing a whopping 230 of the 288 assembly seats, as the Congress-led Maha Vikas Aghadi’s dream of wresting power fizzled, with the opposition combine managing to garner just 46 seats. The Election Commission announced that the BJP has won 132 seats, the Shiv Sena won 57, while the NCP got 41 seats. In the MVA, the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) candidates won 10 seats, Congress won 16, while Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) won 20 seats. Aviation Industry Urges Enhanced Safety Protocols and Transparency After Azerbaijan Airlines Christmas Day CrashThough the game was actually pretty competitive for prolonged stretches on Sunday afternoon at U.S. Bank Stadium, the Vikings imposed their will in the final quarter to run away with a 42-21 win over the Atlanta Falcons. ADVERTISEMENT It was a masterful performance from Sam Darnold in a game against the man he replaced. It wasn’t as good of a game for Kirk Cousins as he struggled to make much of an impact against his former team. Here are five takeaways from the Vikings’ 42-21 win over the Falcons: There were audible “MVP! MVP! MVP!” chants as the game between the Vikings and Falcons wound to a close. They were for Darnold, who completed 22 of 28 passes for 347 yards and five touchdowns, proving that the Vikings are legitimate Super Bowl contenders with him at the helm. There aren’t many quarterbacks in the NFL that have played better than Darnold over the past month. In that span, Darnold has completed 85 of 125 passes for 1,158 yards and 11 touchdowns, while leading the Vikings to a 4-0 record. ADVERTISEMENT Will he actually win MVP? Not likely. Does he deserve to be in the conversation? Absolutely. Never mind that Cousins put up some prolific numbers, completing 23 of 37 passes for 344 yards. He also threw a pair of interceptions and failed to keep the game competitive. There were countless games while he was playing for the Vikings that featured a similar script. It was commonplace for Cousins to pad his stats in garbage time of a game that he had no chance of winning. Now, that’s a problem the Falcons are navigating in real time. After some strong play from Cousins earlier this season, he has regressed over the past month, and as a result, the Falcons have an 0-4 record in that span. ADVERTISEMENT The dynamic duo of Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison rewrote the record books for the Vikings in the win over the Falcons. They became the only players in franchise history to each record more than 100 yards receiving and a pair of touchdowns in the same game. That’s an insane stat considering Randy Moss and Cris Carter played together as did Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen. In total, Jefferson finished with seven catches for 132 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while Addison finished with eight catches for 133 yards and a trio of touchdowns. ADVERTISEMENT After being held in check last time out, Aaron Jones bounced back with a solid effort for the Vikings against the Falcons. He was extremely effective carrying the ball and finished with 13 rushes for 73 yards and a touchdown. The fact that Jones was able to find pay dirt late in the game was a nice reward for him, considering he was an unsung hero on offense. As explosive as the Vikings proved to be throughout the air, Jones provided a nice changeup on the ground, which helped in chewing up clock down the stretch. As somebody who had a lot of success in the final month of last season, Jones is well on his way to replicating that this season. Though the defense for the Vikings struggled at times, allowing nearly 500 yards of total offense, it also stepped up a couple of times to force key turnovers. ADVERTISEMENT Whether it was Josh Metellus recording an interception early, or Byron Murphy with an interception late, the defense needed both of them to help turn the tide in the game. There was also an important forced fumble from Brian Asamoah on special teams that ended up being recovered by C.J. Ham. On the flip side, the Vikings did not turn the ball over on offense, which helped them pull away in the final frame. ______________________________________________________ This story was written by one of our partner news agencies. Located at 600 S. Hermitage Road, the new MP Coney Island was once St. John’s Byzantine Catholic Church and later Stone Church Pizza House and Brew Pub. Construction began in 2023, as workers turned the former church and pizza shop into a more modern facility that could accommodate MP Coney Island, in a project Mitsos described as a “total overhaul.” “They used to have the kitchen in the basement, so we created a grill and kitchen area upstairs, we added a hood system and vents, and we have the drive-through, which is new,” Mitsos said. Since construction work started, Mitsos said he knew about many comments on social media and people stopping by the site to see when the business would open. Although cars and people were spotted at the site in recent weeks, Mitsos said that was part of the employee training, and that Thursday was its first official day of business. “People were excited. People came by or asked us when we would open, so we appreciate that folks in the community have been patient with us,” Mitsos said. The business got its start in 1923, when Greek immigrants John Mitsos and George Papazekos opened the first MP Coney Island in New Castle — with “MP” representing their initials. Since then, MP Coney Island has grown to include four locations, with the Hermitage business being the most recent. Story continues below video There are also locations in Neshannock and Shenango Township in Lawrence County along with Erie. A fifth location is planned for Canonsburg with an expected opening next spring, Mitsos said. There are close to 30 people employed at the Hermitage location, and while the business has “really solid staff and numbers” at the moment, prospective employees are encouraged to apply. “We’re always looking for good people, and the nice thing is that with multiple stores, even if it’s not necessarily at our site in Hermitage, we could probably find a spot for someone within our network,” Mitsos said. While the business offers a variety of items, including french fries, hot dogs and hamburgers, MP Coney Island’s biggest selling point is its chili. Aside from sales within the four existing locations, the chili is also sold in stores and online to the lower 48 states. “Our slogan’s always been, ‘it’s all about the chili,’” Mitsos said. “It’s amazing, we’ll get orders from all four corners of the nation for our chili.” The Hermitage location’s hours will be 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The last hour of business every day will be drive-thru only. The public is also invited to a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday to celebrate the new business. More information on jobs or or ordering online can be found at the website, mpconeyisland.com . The store also maintains a Facebook page with further updates. Like David L. A gift from the Pinstripe Bowl. The Nebraska offensive lineman considers whether Saturday has made him a Yankees fan. Then he nods. “I don’t even watch baseball,” the blocker from eastern Iowa said. “But I am now.” From the venue of one of Major League Baseball’s most iconic teams, Lutovsky had curses on his mind. Not the one with the Bambino or the Billy Goat, but the one he’d heard about Nebraska football for four seasons. The bowl drought. The run of consecutive losing seasons. All of it seemed especially made-up as the Huskers celebrated a 20-15 win over Boston College on a soaked field. “This group didn’t believe in that curse,” Lutovsky said. “We showed it — we made it to a bowl and we won it. I think this is great momentum to carry into the offseason. This is something we can work to achieve again and do better than again next year.” Now the supposed jinx has been exposed as fiction, Lutovsky said. And the coming offseason of work can finally be about building on something instead of starting something different. Luke Lindenmeyer shrugged. If anything, an afternoon at the Pinstripe Bowl made him less sure about what Nebraska tight ends could do next season. “I have no idea,” the third-year player from La Vista said Saturday from the bowels of Yankee Stadium. “That’s the best part.” The 6-foot-3, 250-pounder finished with the best production of his college career — two catches for 22 yards — while blocking and lining up all over the soggy field. Of his five career catches, four have come in the four games since offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen took over in early November. Lindenmeyer suddenly moves toward the front of a position group stuffed with intrigue. Thomas Fidone still has one more year of eligibility after two straight seasons as a regular starter. Meanwhile, Heinrich Haarberg is continuing his transition from quarterback to tight end while former four-star prospect Mac Markway — who abruptly left LSU for NU early in fall camp — may also be a factor in his return from a torn ACL. Former No. 2 tight end Nate Boerkircher this month transferred to Texas A&M while reserve AJ Rollins also left the team. Nebraska has not put an emphasis on targeting tight ends in the portal. The emergence of Lindenmeyer — as displayed Saturday — is one reason why. “Ever since I came here I’ve been working,” Lindenmeyer said. “I came in as a walk-on and it still kind of feels like I’m a walk-on — I still have more to prove. When (Holgorsen) came in he saw how hard I work and how I can fit in his offense. He just put me in places where I can fly.” Get local news delivered to your inbox!
