Current Vacaville Police Captain Chris Polen will become the new Chief of Police for the city, effective Jan. 1, 2025. Appointed by City Manager Aaron Busch, Polen replaces Chief Ian Schmutzler, who is retiring after a 30-year career in the department and a nearly three-year stint as Chief. Polen had been a finalist for the 2021 recruitment and interview process for the Chief position, which Schmutzler assumed in 2022. With more than 25 total years in law enforcement, Polen has climbed the ranks of the department since 2000. “It is both an honor and a privilege to be selected as the next Chief of Police in my hometown,” Polen said. “I am committed to serving our city, fostering relationships forged by my predecessors, and providing leadership to the police department. Polen holds both bachelor’s and master’s degrees and has undergone multiple advanced training programs. He expressed excitement regarding the technological advances that the department has been working on for several years. “I am especially excited about the strides we are making in technology with the new Real Time Information Center (RTIC) that will be activated in the early part of next year,” he said. “This new technology along with our well-trained police staff and the support of our esteemed community will continue to make Vacaville a safe place to live.” City Manager Aaron Busch congratulated Polen on his appointment and struck an optimistic tone about the future of policing in Vacaville. “Chris’ extensive experience, leadership skills, and unwavering dedication to our community make him the ideal choice to lead the Vacaville Police Department into the future,” Busch said. “I am confident that under his leadership, we will continue to prioritize community safety and collaboration across all city departments to maintain and enhance Vacaville’s outstanding quality of life.” Vice Mayor Greg Ritchie also described himself as “over the moon” following the announcement. “I have gotten to know Chris extremely well over the last couple of years, and we have shared numerous stories that have nothing to do with city business,” Ritchie said. “Chris is the kind of man that you would want to have a BBQ with, or beer with and truly enjoy the time spent together. He is also the kind of person when your own family’s safety is being threatened, you would wish he was there to help.” Ritchie said Polen is community-oriented and noted that he is proud to call him a friend. “He is from this community. He lives in this community, and he cares deeply for everyone who calls this place home,” Ritchie said. “This is important, that he’s so invested in the city of Vacaville.” Outgoing Chief Schmutzler described himself as “thrilled” by the selection. “Over the past four years, I have had the privilege of working closely with Chris, and his passion for serving our community is unmatched,” he said. “His leadership, work ethic, and empathy make him the perfect choice to guide the department and continue ensuring that Vacaville remains a safe and welcoming place to live, work, and visit.” A statement from the city describes Polen as instrumental in helping Vacaville recover from the death of Officer Matthew Bowen in a vehicle accident earlier this year, also lauding his leadership and collaboration. “As Chief Polen steps into this new role, he will lead a talented team of dedicated law enforcement professionals committed to serving and protecting Vacaville,” the statement reads. “His vision includes not only enhancing public safety but also strengthening partnerships with residents, businesses, and schools to ensure that Vacaville continues to thrive as one of the safest cities in Northern California.” Schmutzler announced his retirement nearly three weeks ago, having led the department through its first loss of an officer in the line of duty in its history. “Serving as the Chief of Police has been the greatest honor of my career,” Schmutzler said. “I am deeply grateful to my colleagues, our city leaders, and the Vacaville community for their trust and support. While I look forward to retirement, I will always treasure the partnerships and accomplishments we achieved together.” Busch wished Schmutzler well in his retirement when the announcement was made. “Ian Schmutzler has been an exceptional leader who has demonstrated a steadfast dedication to public safety, community engagement, and progressive policing,” said Busch. “His efforts will leave a lasting mark on our community, and we wish him the very best in his well-deserved retirement.”
WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect on Tuesday named Andrew Ferguson as the next chair of the . He will replace Lina Khan, who became a lightning rod for Wall Street and Silicon Valley by blocking billions of dollars’ worth of corporate acquisitions and suing Amazon and Meta while . Ferguson is already one of the FTC’s five commissioners, which is currently made up of three Democrats and two Republicans. “Andrew has a proven record of standing up to Big Tech censorship, and protecting Freedom of Speech in our Great Country,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, adding, “Andrew will be the most America First, and pro-innovation FTC Chair in our Country’s History.” The replacement of Khan likely means that the FTC will operate with a lighter touch when it comes to antitrust enforcement. The new chair is expected to appoint new directors of the FTC’s antitrust and consumer protection divisions. “These changes likely will make the FTC more favorable to business than it has been in recent years, though the extent to which is to be determined,” wrote Anthony DiResta, a consumer protection attorney at Holland & Knight, . Deals that were blocked by the Biden administration could find new life with Trump in command. For example, the new leadership could be more open to a proposed merger between the country’s two biggest supermarket chains, Kroger and Albertsons, which forged a $24.6 billion deal to combine in 2022. Two judges Tuesday night. The FTC had earlier this year to block the merger, claiming the deal would eliminate competition, leading to higher prices and lower wages for workers. The two companies say a merger would help them lower prices and compete against bigger rivals like Walmart. One of the judges said the FTC had shown it was likely to prevail in the administrative hearing. Yet given the widespread public concern over high grocery prices, the Trump administration may not fully abandon the FTC’s efforts to block the deal, some experts have said. And the FTC may continue to scrutinize Big Tech firms for any anticompetitive behavior. Many Republican politicians have accused firms such as Meta of censoring conservative views, and some officials in Trump’s orbit, most notably Vice President-elect JD Vance, have previously expressed support for Khan’s scrutiny of Big Tech firms. In addition to Fergson, Trump also announced Tuesday that he had selected Jacob Helberg as the next undersecretary of state for economic growth, energy and the environment.Barcelona Considering Free Signing Son Heung-min Next Summer to Strengthen Forward Line and Expand Asian Market
