And so, I don't really remember the specifics, other than I just really went into the audition process for Suits like somebody who had already been through hell. I was just like, Throw it all away. Nothing can hurt me now , which I think helped me get the part. I'd been through it so badly that I was just very eager and excited to just have fun and throw caution to the wind." 14. Here's Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar Jones during their first chemistry read for Connell and Marianne in Normal People vs. the duo in the final scene in Episode 2: Normal People producer and director Lenny Abrahamson said after Daisy and Paul did a few scenes together in their audition together, he looked around and "three or four of the people in the room were in tears." I had the audition details for about a day, and I did the whole thing in the first day because I was so overwhelmingly excited about it. I got [the audition details] when I woke up, so that's 7 o'clock. It was one scene, the scene of me and Max in the car, and there was a scene from Stand By Me ." 'Dark era' over, Bowling Green sizes up Arkansas State in 68 Ventures Bowl(Bloomberg) -- American Airlines Group Inc. said that a tech issue with DXC Technology Co., a third-party vendor that maintains the company’s flight-operating systems, caused a brief groundstop on all US flights on Christmas Eve. The carrier said Tuesday that a network hardware-related issue has been resolved and flights have resumed. American’s flight-operating system allows for air transport to be coordinated and dispatched, it said. The halt lasted for about an hour. “We sincerely apologize to our customers for the inconvenience this morning,” American said in a statement. “It’s all hands on deck as our team is working diligently to get customers where they need to go as quickly as possible.” The airline didn’t say if it expected any further delays or other knock-on effects. American Airlines had 3,320 domestic flights and 581 international flights scheduled for the day, according to aviation data provider Cirium. Only 19 of its flights were canceled by the early afternoon, in line with the typical 1% cancellation rate across airlines, Cirium said. But there were delays: Only about 37% of American Airlines flights were leaving on time as of the early afternoon, Cirium said, noting that most airlines aim for 80% of flights departing and arriving within 15 minutes of the scheduled time. The data provider said that most of the delays at American were under two hours. For example, 72% of flights departing out of American’s Dallas hub left within an hour of the scheduled time. “Based on previous such incidents, it appears American has been able to maintain its schedule, albeit with delays,” said Cirium spokesperson Mike Arnot. “There may be an uptick in cancellations later in the day as crews time out.” American Airlines shares rose 0.6% at 2:03 p.m. in New York, erasing an earlier decline. DXC Technology stock fell 2.1%. American Airlines had said earlier it was experiencing technical issues affecting all of its flights, disrupting operations on a day when the Federal Aviation Administration expects to see about 30,000 US flights across all carriers. Some online postings said the airline suffered a software outage preventing it from calculating weight and balance requirements for its flights. The incident comes after Delta Air Lines Inc. suffered a multi-day grounding in July affecting thousands of travelers due to a software glitch. Two years ago, Southwest Airlines Co. suffered a year-end meltdown involving computer-system issues. --With assistance from Jason Kao and Sana Pashankar. President-elect Donald Trump was welcomed back to the world stage on Saturday, sitting down with Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy and French President Emmanuel Macron with a dramatic backdrop: the reopening of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame. With Trump set to return to the White House in January, the three leaders met at the Elysee Palace in Paris with diplomacy on the war in Ukraine in flux. Officials close to Macron and Zelenskyy said the meeting was positive, without providing details. “The world is going a little crazy right now and we’ll be talking about that,” Trump told reporters as he arrived for an initial two-way meeting with Macron. Macron had sought to engineer the talks to initiate a discussion on how to end the war in Ukraine, an official in his office said. Later, the French president hosted guests, including heads of state and global business leaders, at the cathedral that was painstakingly restored after a catastrophic 2019 fire. For Macron, the day’s events offered a brief fillip as he seeks a new prime minister after his government collapsed this week in a show of force by far-right leader Marine Le Pen. Almost three years after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Zelenskyy and his allies are anxiously watching Trump for signs of how he plans approach the conflict. U.S. weapons and financial aid have been a vital crutch for Kyiv, but Trump had promised he would engineer a swift end to the war on the campaign trail. That’s fueled concerns in Kyiv and other European capitals that the next U.S. administration might roll back support for Ukraine to pressure Zelenskyy to compromise. On the battlefield, Ukrainian forces have been on the back foot for most of the year and Russian gains have been accelerating in recent weeks. The incoming U.S. president faces a daunting range of geopolitical challenges, including war in the Middle East and long-running tensions with China. Shortly before arriving at the presidential palace, Trump posted on his Truth Social platform about the conflict in Syria, where rebels opposed to President Bashar Assad have made rapid advances. A withdrawal of its troops that are helping support Assad might be “the best thing that can happen” to Russia, he said. The U.S., he added, “should have nothing to do with it. This is not our fight.” The visit to Paris is Trump’s first trip abroad to meet with world leaders since he won back the White House in November and is a coup for Macron, who’s seen his political program decimated by the domestic opposition who forced out his prime minister with a no-confidence vote on Wednesday. Macron worked hard to engage Trump through his first term, despite Trump’s occasional barbs, inviting the U.S. leader to the Bastille Day ceremony in 2017 and taking him to dinner at the Eiffel Tower. Trump called Macron weak after the “Yellow Vest” protests broke out in 2018 and attacked him for cozying up to China. On Saturday, Macron deployed all his experience of dealing with Trump, welcoming him with a red-carpet ceremony at the Elysee and making him effectively the guest of honor at the cathedral. Trump was seated in the front row next to Macron and the two men were seen chatting during the service. Regardless of Macron’s domestic struggles, the meeting was testament to the unique soft power of France and the president’s ability to wield it. As Trump and Zelenskiy were speaking, an exclusive list of guests were arriving at the cathedral, which has been rebuilt at a cost of 700 million euros ($740 million). Bernard Arnault, Europe’s richest man, was among the early arrivals. Kering SA Chief Executive Officer Francois-Henri Pinault came with his wife, the actor Salma Hayek. Both men were major donors to the reconstruction effort. Billionaire John Elkann, who chairs automaker Stellantis SA, was also in attendance as was FIFA President Gianni Infantino. Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni chuckled as she posed for the cameras with Macron and his wife Brigitte. Zelenskyy embraced Macron as he arrived and appeared to say “thank you” to the French leader. The Ukrainian was given an ovation by the guests as he entered the nave. Trump was among the last of the grandees to be greeted by Macron outside the cathedral, though Elon Musk, a close ally of the president-elect, arrived shortly afterward, scurrying across the square in the rain. First lady Jill Biden followed soon before the ceremony started. After the ceremony at the cathedral, a select group of guests will attend a dinner back at Macron’s presidential palace. ©2024 Bloomberg L.P. Visit bloomberg.com. Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly is not escalating a war of words with Mexico, after the Mexican president criticized Canada’s culture and its framing of border issues. “I fundamentally believe that many conversations, when it comes to diplomacy, are always better when they remain private,” Joly said Monday during a teleconference from Brussels. The rift between the two trading partners started with U.S. president-elect Donald Trump’s declaration that he plans to impose 25 per cent tariffs on all goods from both countries unless they stop the flow of migrants and illegal drugs into the U.S. Several federal and provincial officials in Canada responded by saying the issues at the Canadian border are vastly different from the Mexican border. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, for example, has voiced concerns that the level of Chinese investment in Mexico goes against the economic-security goals of Ottawa and Washington. Some premiers have called on Canada to negotiate a trade deal with Washington independent from Mexico, ahead of the 2026 review of the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement, which replaced NAFTA during Trump’s last tenure in the White House. In a Monday press conference, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Mexico “must be respected, especially by its trading partners.” She also noted that Canada has “a very serious problem with fentanyl consumption,” more than Mexico, and possibly as a result of some drug-decriminalization measures. “We are not going to fall for a provocation of which country is better,” she said, chalking some criticism from Canada up to political pandering. “Mexico should not be used as part of (Canadian) electoral campaigns,” she said. Yet Sheinbaum also said Canada “could only wish they had the cultural riches Mexico has,” saying her country has civilizations dating back thousands of years. Asked to respond, Joly said she is reaching out to Mexican officials after speaking with the U.S., including about the “very important trade agreement” that includes all three countries. “I know there has been many conversations in Canada about how we can work together and how we can, at the same time, protect our interests,” she said. “We have a positive relationship with Mexico, and we need to work with the country; that’s definitely my goal.” Christopher Sands, director of the Canada Institute at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, said tensions between both countries played out in the NAFTA renegotiation, when there was limited communication between Ottawa and Mexico City. “The Canada-Mexico relationship has always been the weakest part of the triangle of North America,” he said. “There was a lot of feeling during the (CUSMA) negotiations that Mexico was willing to go it alone, and that Canada particularly toward the end was on the outside looking in, and had to fight its way back to the table.” He said Washington would rather have a trade pact with all three countries so it can limit the time and attention it needs on continental issues. “The U.S. is probably the most trilateral of all three countries,” he said, with a caveat. “I think Donald Trump looks at this going into 2026 and says, ‘Great, divide and conquer.’” Sands added that Sheinbaum and her predecessor have implemented nationalist policies that have been at odds with Washington. “The Mexican government has been moving in a direction which is antithetical to the North American project (through) nationalizing parts of the economy, by reversing energy reforms, by doing deals with the cartels. (They are) sometimes working co-operatively with the Americans in the borders, and sometimes not.” Sheinbaum indicated a week ago that she would be writing a letter to Trudeau. That has not been made public, although she did release a letter she had sent to Trump.

By ADRIANA GOMEZ LICON FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — President-elect Donald Trump promised on Tuesday to “vigorously pursue” capital punishment after President Joe Biden commuted the sentences of most people on federal death row partly to stop Trump from pushing forward their executions. Trump criticized Biden’s decision on Monday to change the sentences of 37 of the 40 condemned people to life in prison without parole, arguing that it was senseless and insulted the families of their victims. Biden said converting their punishments to life imprisonment was consistent with the moratorium imposed on federal executions in cases other than terrorism and hate-motivated mass murder. “Joe Biden just commuted the Death Sentence on 37 of the worst killers in our Country,” he wrote on his social media site. “When you hear the acts of each, you won’t believe that he did this. Makes no sense. Relatives and friends are further devastated. They can’t believe this is happening!” Presidents historically have no involvement in dictating or recommending the punishments that federal prosecutors seek for defendants in criminal cases, though Trump has long sought more direct control over the Justice Department’s operations. The president-elect wrote that he would direct the department to pursue the death penalty “as soon as I am inaugurated,” but was vague on what specific actions he may take and said they would be in cases of “violent rapists, murderers, and monsters.” He highlighted the cases of two men who were on federal death row for slaying a woman and a girl, had admitted to killing more and had their sentences commuted by Biden. On the campaign trail, Trump often called for expanding the federal death penalty — including for those who kill police officers, those convicted of drug and human trafficking, and migrants who kill U.S. citizens. “Trump has been fairly consistent in wanting to sort of say that he thinks the death penalty is an important tool and he wants to use it,” said Douglas Berman, an expert on sentencing at Ohio State University’s law school. “But whether practically any of that can happen, either under existing law or other laws, is a heavy lift.” Berman said Trump’s statement at this point seems to be just a response to Biden’s commutation. “I’m inclined to think it’s still in sort of more the rhetoric phase. Just, ‘don’t worry. The new sheriff is coming. I like the death penalty,’” he said. Most Americans have historically supported the death penalty for people convicted of murder, according to decades of annual polling by Gallup, but support has declined over the past few decades. About half of Americans were in favor in an October poll, while roughly 7 in 10 Americans backed capital punishment for murderers in 2007. Before Biden’s commutation, there were 40 federal death row inmates compared with more than 2,000 who have been sentenced to death by states. “The reality is all of these crimes are typically handled by the states,” Berman said. A question is whether the Trump administration would try to take over some state murder cases, such as those related to drug trafficking or smuggling. He could also attempt to take cases from states that have abolished the death penalty. Berman said Trump’s statement, along with some recent actions by states, may present an effort to get the Supreme Court to reconsider a precedent that considers the death penalty disproportionate punishment for rape. “That would literally take decades to unfold. It’s not something that is going to happen overnight,” Berman said. Before one of Trump’s rallies on Aug. 20, his prepared remarks released to the media said he would announce he would ask for the death penalty for child rapists and child traffickers. But Trump never delivered the line. One of the men Trump highlighted on Tuesday was ex-Marine Jorge Avila Torrez, who was sentenced to death for killing a sailor in Virginia and later pleaded guilty to the fatal stabbing of an 8-year-old and a 9-year-old girl in a suburban Chicago park several years before. Related Articles The other man, Thomas Steven Sanders, was sentenced to death for the kidnapping and slaying of a 12-year-old girl in Louisiana, days after shooting the girl’s mother in a wildlife park in Arizona. Court records show he admitted to both killings. Some families of victims expressed anger with Biden’s decision, but the president had faced pressure from advocacy groups urging him to make it more difficult for Trump to increase the use of capital punishment for federal inmates. The ACLU and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops were some of the groups that applauded the decision. Biden left three federal inmates to face execution. They are Dylann Roof, who carried out the 2015 racist slayings of nine Black members of Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina; 2013 Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev ; and Robert Bowers, who fatally shot 11 congregants at Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life Synagogue in 2018 , the deadliest antisemitic attack in U.S history. Associated Press writers Jill Colvin, Michelle L. Price and Eric Tucker contributed to this report.ENGLEWOOD — The Broncos moved on from a struggling player and signaled more opportunity for a rookie. Denver waived cornerback Levi Wallace and promoted rookie running back Blake Watson to the active roster, the team announced on Tuesday. The Broncos benched Wallace after poor outing in Week 13 against the Browns that he called “the worst game I played in the league.” Rookie cornerback Kris Abrams-Draine (Missouri/fifth round) replaced Wallace with starter snaps opposite of Pat Surtain in the Broncos secondary. Abrams-Draine has recorded two pass deflections and one interception over his past two games. Watson, a high-priority undrafted rookie signing (Memphis), made his first NFL impact Thursday night in a road loss to the Chargers. He ran 10 yards on four carries. Watson also caught one pass for 13 yards. “It’s never an easy decision. Hopefully, we’ll see how it goes and we’re able to get (Wallace) back (on the practice squad),” coach Sean Payton said after practice at Broncos Park. “Basically, you’re trying to protect your roster at certain positions. "I would say with the way that Kris Abrams-Draine (has played), some of those guys have been really stepping up. Again, keeping a young player like Blake Watson that others are trying to (sign). This is the time of the year where some of the teams that are maybe out of it or are trying to improve look into the future. “It’s always difficult roster management, though, and that’s hard.” The Broncos (9-6) travel to face the Bengals in Cincinnati on Saturday with a chance to clinch a postseason berth . Denver Broncos playoff odds drop to 76% after road loss to Chargers Injury report: CB Moss, RB Badie full participants Injured cornerback Riley Moss (knee) was listed as a full practice participant. Running back Tyler Badie returned to practice from injured reserve (back) as a full participant. Moss has not played since Week 12 against the Raiders. He is on track to return with a strong week of practice. Badie last played in Week 4 at the Jets. “(Badie’s) clock began today. He’s doing really well,” Payton said. “He’s smart and he knows the system, and that’s a big plus.” Wide receiver Troy Franklin was listed as a full practice participant while dealing with an ankle injury. Running back Jaleel McLaughlin was limited due to a quad injury after missing the Chargers loss. Former Broncos who scored just one NFL touchdown relish at least being 'in the books' Weather impact Expect weather to potentially influence the Broncos-Bengals game. 9News meteorologist Chris Bianchi reported on social media that the forecast in Cincinnati “looks pretty soggy” on Saturday afternoon for the 2:30 pm (MST) kickoff at Paycor Stadium. “Heavy rain possible, though some modeling keeps the heaviest rain post-game Saturday night,” Bianchi posted on X (formerly Twitter). “15-25 mph gusts possible also. Looks like weather will be a factor on Saturday.” The Broncos played in one rain-soaked game previously this season. They defeated the Jets, 10-9, with driving rain at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. "We've got to be cautious and play smarter," running back Audric Estimé said. "Coach Payton said he's going to have extra gloves with us on our sideline. We've got to be able to take advantage of that opportunity he's giving us." Payton added: “Wet ball drills, all of that stuff, we’ve got to be prepared for any kind of weather.” Heads up @Broncos : Saturday game in Cincy looks pretty soggy. Heavy rain possible, though some modeling keeps the heaviest rain post-game Saturday night. 15-25 mph gusts possible also. Looks like weather will be a factor on Saturday. Updates as the week continues. #OHwx pic.twitter.com/k968jmHBSL Broncos/Bengals postseason paths The Bengals (7-8) have a narrow path to reaching the NFL playoffs. Cincinnati must close the season with victories over Denver and Pittsburgh. The Broncos would need to lose in their regular-season finale against Kansas City, too. The Bengals also require the Dolphins and Colts to lose at least one more game. Miami travels to face the Browns and Jets. Indianapolis travels to the Giants and hosts the Jaguars. There is just one scenario where Denver clinches a playoff spot in Week 17: A win or tie against the Bengals. “All of our focus is on Cincinnati. Even with that tough loss that took, we’ve got to stay positive and keep moving forward," outside linebacker Johnathon Cooper said. "We’ve got to realize that everything we want is still ahead of us. We just have to go get it.”
