By Kemberley Washington, CPA, Bankrate.com The IRS Direct File program, which lets taxpayers file their federal income tax return directly with the IRS for free, is doubling its reach to 24 states for the 2025 tax season, up from 12 states in 2024, the program’s pilot year. The Direct File program will also accept more types of tax situations for the 2025 tax season. While taxpayers who used the system in 2024 could claim a handful of tax credits, including the earned income tax credit and the child tax credit , that list is expanding in 2025 to include the child and dependent care credit , among others. An estimated 30 million taxpayers will qualify for the Direct File program in 2025, the IRS says. More than 140,000 taxpayers filed their federal tax returns through the Direct File program in 2024. About 90% of users said their experience was excellent or above average, according to a survey of about 11,000 Direct File users in 2024, conducted by the General Services Administration. “We’re excited about the improvements to Direct File and the millions more taxpayers who will be eligible to use the service this year,” said Danny Werfel, the IRS commissioner, in a statement. “Our goal is to improve the experience of tax filing itself and help taxpayers meet their obligations quickly and easily.” The IRS says that taxpayers can use Direct File when the 2025 tax season kicks off in January, and it will be available until Oct. 15, 2025. But the program’s future is somewhat unclear: In December, 29 Republican lawmakers sent a letter to President-elect Donald Trump, calling for him to end the Direct File program on his first day in office. Lawmakers in the U.S. House of Representatives also introduced legislation in July to end the Direct File program. For now, here’s what you need to know about how the IRS Direct File program works, and how to qualify for it. The Direct File program is a new initiative, about to enter its second year, that allows taxpayers to file their federal tax returns electronically with the IRS. The no-cost tool guides taxpayers through every part of their federal income tax return. Taxpayers can file using a smartphone, computer or tablet. One of the program’s advantages is that, if you have questions as you’re working on your return, you can get live support directly from the IRS via chat or phone. IRS representatives can answer basic tax questions and help with technical issues in English and Spanish. The Direct File program has income limits, as well as limits on the types of income, deductions and credits you can enter on your tax return. For the 2025 tax season: To be eligible for Direct File, your income can come from the following sources: But if you’re self-employed, or have business or rental income, you can’t use Direct File . Same goes for IRA contributions or distributions: If you have either, you can’t use Direct File. You can use the IRS Direct File program only if you claim the standard deduction — the program isn’t available to people who itemize. But you can claim certain above-the-line deductions: student loan interest , educator expenses and health savings account contributions . You can’t use Direct File if you want to deduct your IRA contributions. On Capitol Hill this week, after days of attacks by a MAGA media mob, Senator Joni Ernst said that she would support Trump’s controversial nominee for Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth , through his confirmation process—a striking change in tone for the Iowa Republican, herself a military veteran and survivor of sexual assault who had previously expressed concerns about a Pentagon nominee who has said women should not serve in combat roles and has been accused of sexual assault, alcohol abuse, and financial mismanagement. Consider the fight that Trump has already picked with Canada, threatening to impose tariffs of up to twenty-five per cent on its imports along with those of Mexico—a potentially crippling blow to both their economies. Earlier this week, Canada’s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, said that his country would “respond to unfair tariffs” but he had not yet figured out how—hardly a flaming insult. Nonetheless, Trump reacted to this by threatening to annex Canada as the fifty-first state and taunting the Canadian leader as “governor” in a social-media post. Trudeau, who often drew Trump’s ire in his first term as well, did not respond in kind. Instead, he was hard at work on a plan to mollify Trump’s concerns about the U.S.-Canada border, including adding police dogs and drones to a largely unmilitarized zone, apparently in hope of staving off Trump’s threatened tariffs. Some of Trump’s presumptive targets are not even waiting for his expected threats. At NATO headquarters in Brussels this week, word came that the alliance, which Trump had once threatened to leave entirely if member states did not start contributing more to their defense budgets, was considering a new target for members: spending three per cent of G.D.P. on defense each year, up from the current two-per-cent goal. The move, which would come at a time when the heightened threats to European security from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine require significant new military investment, appears to be an effort to preëmpt Trump’s inevitable demand for three-per-cent spending—an idea his advisers floated over the summer—and which he’ll likely take credit for anyway in the event that it happens. And why wait? Elbridge Colby, a former Trump Pentagon official reportedly in line for a senior post in his next Administration, went ahead and claimed the win even before any formal decision: Trump’s “common sense policy is getting results,” he posted on X, on Thursday. Are these all examples of preëmptive surrender—“ obeying in advance ,” as the Yale historian Timothy Snyder has put it—or is something more strategic going on here? As much as Trump loves being fawned over, the spectre of so many prospective rivals caving in so quickly creates its own sort of dilemma for a leader who craves conflict to sustain his Presidency and his political movement. Trump thrives on such fights, seeks them out, and where they do not exist, he will move swiftly to create them. Conflict is integral to who he is, as a person and as a politician. No doubt, there will come a point when at least some of those he has targeted, whether neighboring states whose economic health is threatened by his protectionist policies or government officials whose integrity and independence are compromised by his extralegal demands, push back. (Republican senators, maybe not so much.) Every lawyer in Washington, it seems, is preparing to fight the new Trump Administration in court if lobbying and favor-seeking don’t work out first. I suspect that much of what we’re seeing in the early response to Trump represents a collective conclusion that resistance to him eight years ago did little good, and often much harm, to those who did the resisting. The classic example of this was Angela Merkel, then the German Chancellor, whose statement congratulating Trump on his victory in 2016 essentially put Trump on notice that she would be watching for him to violate norms of democracy and common decency. Merkel, to no one’s surprise, became perhaps Trump’s least favorite Western leader. In 2024, it is entirely rational to conclude that lecturing Trump will hardly produce favorable results. It’s understandable, too, that many of his detractors are simply exhausted by the continual demands of standing against the man. And yet it’s striking how far many have pivoted to the other extreme. Is there no other course between going to war with Trump and accommodating him? There is also a widespread view that Trump is more bluster than bite. Eight years on, even many of the President-elect’s fiercest foes now recognize that he presents them with a unique blend of incendiary hyperbole and actual menace. They know he did not build the wall on America’s southern border or get Mexico to pay for it. So maybe better to wait and mobilize against the threats that Trump seems specifically willing to follow through on. And yet I can’t help but worry that this post-election transition to Trump’s second term is merely another moment when hope seems to be triumphing over experience—whether it’s backers of Ukraine looking for evidence, however scant, that Trump won’t abandon them to a deal with Russia on Vladimir Putin’s terms, or opponents of “Mass Deportation Now” who think it will simply be too costly and complicated for Trump to execute. Just this week, he said he wanted to pardon the insurrectionists who stormed the U.S. Capitol on his behalf four years ago—and to lock up the members of Congress who investigated the riot. In northern Gaza, families are still fleeing what is left of their homes. “They told us to leave immediately,” said one woman, who stopped briefly to tell a VOA cameraman what is going on. Families behind her streamed down the bombed-out street, carrying belongings in backpacks and plastic sacks, and other items, such as pans and buckets, in their hands. “We have nothing else to lose. We lost our children. We lost everything,” she said, as a male family member urged her to keep moving. The United Nations said the Israeli military is “subjecting an entire population to bombing, siege and risk of starvation.” And in the next two months, the situation could get immeasurably worse, added Roger Hearn, director of relief and social services for UNRWA, the U.N.’s agency for Palestinian refugees. Over the objections of much of the international community, Israeli laws that would essentially halt UNRWA operations in the Gaza Strip are expected to take effect in late January. “People are facing catastrophic hunger in Gaza,” said Hearn in a phone interview from an airport on his way home from Gaza. “People are struggling to get the basics, such as water. Most people in Gaza are displaced. ... So, to actually take that one step further and say, ‘OK, UNRWA is forbidden from working in Gaza,’ would be a very cruel addition to a situation where people are already in dire need.” Israel accuses UNRWA of having Hamas members among its staff in Gaza, including participants of the October 7, 2023, terror attack that sparked the war when Hamas-led militants killed about 1,200 Israelis and kidnapped more than 250 others. The United States, Britain and other Western countries designate Hamas as a terror group. In a letter to the U.N. early this month, Israel withdrew from the 1967 agreement recognizing UNRWA, according to The Times of Israel . “UNRWA — the organization whose employees participated in the October 7th massacre and many of whose employees are Hamas operatives — is part of the problem in the Gaza Strip and not part of the solution,” said Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz, according to the news site. And while UNRWA disputes these allegations, Hearn said the most urgent issue on their agenda is trying to convince Israel not to implement the new laws. People in Gaza are now starving, even as trucks containing enough food to feed the Strip for months languish across the border in Egypt. Aid that gets in is hard to distribute amid ongoing battles, bombings and looting. Aid workers in Gaza say they still have hope that the laws will not go into force. “We hope that the active parties in the international community will intervene and prevent this disaster,” said Abu Sharaf Jadallah, a local leader and relief worker who helps distribute UNRWA aid in Gaza. “It is the only party now that is providing aid to all Palestinians, to 2 million displaced people.” Long-term losses Further south, in Khan Younis and Deir Albalah, Gaza, where conditions for displaced families are marginally better than in the north, humanitarian aid is not nearly enough to feed the people. They are malnourished and increasingly sick. Soon, many also may face starvation. Families here say they fear that if UNRWA stops working in Gaza, they will have even less access to food and clean water. However, the long-term consequences of an UNRWA ban could be even more devastating, they say. Before the current war, UNRWA was providing education for 350,000 children in Gaza. Palestinians in general, and Gaza specifically, have one of the world’s highest literacy rates. But that status is already in jeopardy as children here face a second year without classes. UNRWA schools now mostly serve as crowded and undersupplied emergency shelters. But locals say that to cripple the future education system at this time would be a massive blow. “It will be a terrible thing,” said Rasheed Abu Eida, a 50-year-old father of six. “A country deprived of education.” Now, his children are just trying to survive, he said. Besides trauma from constant bombings, they have suffered from severe weight loss and other illnesses. “My children are destroyed,” Eida said. New law controversy The international community has widely objected to the laws, with U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres saying, “It would be a catastrophe in what is already an unmitigated disaster.” The laws were approved by Israel’s parliament in late October and would bar UNRWA from operating in Israel, which controls all access to Gaza, and curtail the agency’s activities inside the Strip. Israel has said that more than 10% of the UNRWA staff of about 13,000 people in Gaza has ties to Hamas, and that 12 employees participated in the October 7 attack. UNRWA has fired nine employees in response to these allegations and says it has seen no evidence to support the claim that more than 1,400 other staff members have ties to Hamas. Israel says other organizations and U.N. agencies can take up the work of UNRWA, but the U.N. says it would be virtually impossible to replace UNRWA’s complex systems on the ground during war time. Locals say the potential loss of the organization, which has been helping Palestinians since 1950, is unthinkable. The organization serves Palestinian communities in Gaza, the West Bank, East Jerusalem, Lebanon, Syria and Jordan. “A ban on UNRWA would mean no care for refugees,” said Fatma Alzahraa Sharqawy, a displaced mother of four. “And not only the refugees who left their villages and cities in the past, but all of Palestine. President-elect Donald Trump had promised during his campaign that he would remove Gensler. But Gensler on Thursday announced that he would be stepping down from his post on the day that Trump is inaugurated. Bitcoin has jumped 40% since Trump’s victory. It hit new highs Thursday and was nearing $100,000. Bitcoin moved notably higher still after Gensler's resignation was announced. Gensler's stance on the rise of cryptocurrencies was captured during a speech he gave during the first year of his chairmanship in 2021 where he described the market as “the Wild West.” “This asset class is rife with fraud, scams, and abuse in certain applications,” he said in a speech at the Aspen Security Forum. “There’s a great deal of hype and spin about how crypto assets work. In many cases, investors aren’t able to get rigorous, balanced, and complete information.” Under Gensler, the SEC brought actions against players in the crypto industry for fraud, wash trading and other violations, including as recently as last month when the commission brought fraud charges against three companies purporting to be market makers, along with nine individuals for trying to manipulate various crypto markets. Yet access to cryptocurrencies became more widespread under Gensler. In January, the SEC approved exchange-traded funds that track the spot price of bitcoin. With such ETFs, investors could get easier access to bitcoin without the huge overlays required to buy it directly. Gensler, however, acknowledged the SEC had denied earlier, similar applications for such ETFs, including Grayscale Bitcoin Trust, among the first to eventually be approved by the SEC. “Circumstances, however, have changed,” Gensler said, pointing to a ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia that said the SEC failed to adequately explain its reasoning in rejecting Grayscale’s proposal. Even there, Gensler made sure not to endorse the merits of bitcoin. In the depths of the COVID-19 pandemic, hordes of smaller-pocketed and novice investors suddenly piled into the stock of the struggling video-game retailer. During the height of the frenzy, several brokerages barred customers from buying GameStop after the clearinghouse that settles their trades demanded more cash to cover the increased risk created by its highly volatile price. In May 2024, new rules meant broker-dealers have to fully settle their trades within one business day of the trade date, down from the previous two. Critics of the SEC under Gensler have called many of the agency's proposals overly burdensome.
