Despite the brand’s cheerful aesthetic, the real world of Lisa Frank was not all rainbows, according to a new Prime Video docuseries, “Glitter and Greed: The Lisa Frank Story.” The four-part documentary includes interviews with several former Lisa Frank employees, as well as one of Frank’s sons and her ex-husband and former business partner, who say there was a darker reality behind the company’s playful public image, and instead a toxic work environment. Executive producer Mary Robertson tells TODAY.com she “grew up obsessed with Lisa Frank products.” When she began investigating what had happened to the brand in recent years, she soon realized there was a story about Lisa Frank waiting to be told. “We started making phone calls ... and reached out to as many former employees as we could find,” she says. “Many of them said, ‘I’ve been waiting for this call. Boy, do I have a story to tell you, and it’s a wild one.’ And at that point we were completely hooked.” By the early 2010s, the Lisa Frank brand was fading. In 2013, its multicolored headquarters in Tucson, Arizona, which once employed hundreds of people, had just six remaining workers, according to the Arizona Daily Star . Eventually, the factory was abandoned altogether. Lisa Frank has not disappeared, however. The brand’s website still sells versions of its signature rainbow-hued backpacks, makeup kits and other accessories, and they are collaborating with brands including Crocs and Morphe. TODAY.com has reached out to Frank for comment and has not heard back at the time of publication. In response to producers’ questions, Frank issued the following statement, which was shown at the end of each of the documentary’s four episodes: “I have loved art and have been an artist ever since childhood. Lisa Frank, Inc. is the result of that passion. I’m incredibly grateful for the amazing artists and team members who helped bring my vision to life. I’m so excited about the future, as the next generation takes the helm. Stay tuned — the best has yet to come!” Who is Lisa Frank? Lisa Frank is the artist and entrepreneur who founded the Lisa Frank brand, which she launched in 1979. Frank, 70, was “totally a girly girl” growing up, she said in an interview for Urban Outfitters’ blog in 2012. “I was not a jock. When I was 12, my parents got me a loom, so I was a weaver. I loved to read, I loved to do artwork,” she said. Frank realized the potential for turning her creativity into a business while studying art at the University of Arizona. “One day, I met a guy who said, ‘Anything you draw I can have made,’ so we started making things from my ideas,” she told the Urban Outfitters blog. “I also represented other people and sold their artwork, and then we realized that I was the one with the commercial sense, because if I said ‘Make a teddy bear or a unicorn,’ that was what sold.” One of her earliest businesses was a brand called Sticky Fingers, which Frank described as “jewelry all made up of plastic that I glued together with glue gun.” Eventually, she rebranded Sticky Fingers using her own name, and Lisa Frank, Inc. (LFI) was born. The company was established in 1979, according to public records. The company boomed, bringing in more than $1 billion in retail sales between 1990 and 2005, the Tucson Citizen reported in 2005. In 1994, Frank married James Green, an in-house illustrator hired in 1982 who later became the company’s president and CEO in 1992, per court documents , and gifted him 49% of LFI’s shares, according to the same court documents . Green, in the documentary and on his social media pages, has taken credit for “establishing the look and feel” of Lisa Frank’s signature art, which persists to this day. “I am not the head artist. I am the artist,” he said in an Instagram video posted after the documentary aired . TODAY.com has reached out to Green for comment and has not heard back at the time of publication. Frank and Green have two sons, Hunter and Forrest. Their names were inspired by two characters from the Lisa Frank universe: Hunter the leopard and Forrest the tiger cub. “We had created both characters before the boys were born, and then when they were born, we thought, ‘Oh my gosh, they really do fit their personalities!’” Frank told Urban Outfitters in 2012. Frank filed for divorce against Green in 2005, marking the beginning of a years-long legal saga involving the former couple and other Lisa Frank associates, including former executive vice president Rhonda Rowlette. Frank sued Green in 2005 to remove him as director, president and chief operating officer of LFI, and buy back his shares. The case went to trial in 2007 and ruled in favor of LFI, terminating Green as director, per a 2009 appeal . “I lost my titles, I lost my business, I lost my building, I lost everything else ... She owns everything. She owns my life’s work,” Green said in the documentary. Meanwhile, Frank fired Rowlette, who in turn sued her in 2006 for $2 million plus damages, saying that Frank had promised her that amount in the event that her job was terminated. LFI denied making any such promises and the claim was settled, per a court filing . The docuseries also includes interviews with several former employees about their experiences at LFI. Many share anecdotes about times both Frank and Green allegedly treated them harshly. “They definitely felt like they were trying to break my spirit,” Tony De Luz, an illustrator at LFI from 1996 to 2000, said in the documentary. “I think that was the way they operated, was that they wanted people who took whatever s--- they piled on them.” Green, in the documentary, denied treating employees unfairly and calls the allegations a “crock of s---.” He said his ex-wife was the “tyrant,” not him. Why is Lisa Frank not in the ‘Glitter & Greed’ documentary? Frank is notoriously private. There are few photos available of her publicly, she seldom gives interviews and when she agreed to speak to Urban Outfitters on camera in 2012 in conjunction with LFI’s former collaboration with the brand, she asked for her face to be obscured. She doesn’t appear in “Glitter and Greed: The Lisa Frank Story,” which explores the inner workings of Lisa Frank, Inc and suggests that the behind-the-scenes reality of the company was anything but rainbows and unicorns. Director Arianna La Penne says they reached out to Frank multiple times, but she declined to be interviewed. “I thought about Lisa Frank every day that I was making this ... I really wanted her to participate,” La Penne says, but added she has “no judgment” about the media-shy Frank declining to take part. La Penne says if she did have a chance to speak to Frank, the first question she would ask her would be, “Was it all worth it?” “In the sense of, is she happy now with where she landed?” La Penne says. “Because in this company’s life, the personal and the professional were completely intertwined, so it’s all connected and related. And I really would love to know what it’s like in her head.” Where is Lisa Frank now? Frank does not appear to have given an interview in years. However, her brand has an online presence. The Lisa Frank website continues to sell merchandise, including backpacks, wallets, makeup palettes and laptop cases, all in Frank's signature style. The website also highlights Lisa Frank’s collaborations with brands including Crocs, Morphe, Casetify and Hotels.com. The brand’s TikTok page, which has more than 739,000 followers, has been hinting at a Lisa Frank renaissance for a while now. One post from November 2023 shows two Lisa Frank mascots standing in front of what appears to be the revitalized rainbow-painted Lisa Frank headquarters in Tucson, Arizona. “We’re baaaack!” reads the caption . “When we casually make a major comeback,” the brand captioned a similar TikTok post in April. One key figure in Lisa Frank’s new chapter is her son, Forrest Green, who has served as Head of Brand and Chairman of LFI since 2018, according to his LinkedIn profile . Forrest Green has worked closely with his mother from a young age, according to a 2021 Bustle profile . Frank was not interviewed for the article, but Forrest Green, then 21, said on the record he was behind the brand's recently revitalized Instagram. Forrest Green said his mother used to pull him out of elementary school to sit in at meetings at LFI. “One time when I was probably 8 or 9, I closed the meeting like, ‘All right, guys, this was awesome; what are the next steps?’” he told Bustle. “The licensing agent at the time looked at me and said, ‘Well, I guess Forrest closed the meeting!’” In recent years, Forrest Green has worked to build the brand’s social media following. He has said one of his goals is to tap into ‘90s nostalgia while redefining the Lisa Frank brand for the 21st century. “There’s just so much possibility. More than just people saying, ‘Make some folders again, make some stickers again,’” he told Bustle. “That’s definitely part of the plan, but it’s like people don’t even know who we are at this point. Lisa Frank is a lifestyle and it needs to be treated as such.” The story of Lisa Frank is no doubt complex but for Robertson, working on the documentary ultimately increased her appreciation for the brand. "I love the Lisa Frank work now more than ever after having spent several years deep, deep, deep in the story, and after having become aware of a really complicated reality that existed behind the scenes at the company," she tells TODAY.com. After interviewing several former Lisa Frank employees, Robertson says when she thinks of Lisa Frank, she sees the "passions of all these people who left a part of themselves in it. And they want us to love that work. They want it to endure through the ages." As for the brand's future, Robertson says she has witnessed first-hand the ability of Lisa Frank designs to captivate a new generation. "I think they have timeless appeal," she says. "I remember as a girl, the attachment and attraction that I felt towards these objects and designs. And now I have a 6-year-old daughter, and she goes absolutely nuts for them."

CommentsIRVING, Texas (AP) — The NFL will consider expanding replay assist to include facemask penalties and other plays. Officials have missed several obvious facemask penalties this season, including two in a three-week span during Thursday night games. “When we see it, because I see it like yourselves and the fans, I have an opportunity to see it from a different angle and see it from a slow-mo,” NFL executive Troy Vincent said Wednesday at the league’s winter meetings. “When you think about the position of where the officials are, things are happening so fast. Sometimes the facemask can be the same color as the gloves. There’s a lot happening. Concerning? Yes, because that’s a big miss. That’s a big foul. That’s why we would like to consider putting that for the membership to consider putting that foul category that we can see, putting that (penalty flag) on the field to help. There is a frustration, and we believe that is one category we can potentially get right." Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold was grabbed by his facemask and brought down in the end zone to end Minnesota’s comeback attempt against the Rams on Oct. 24. But there was no call. On Oct. 3, officials missed a facemask on Buccaneers running back Bucky Irving while he ran for 7 yards late in the fourth quarter. Tampa Bay instead was called for holding on the play, got forced out of field-goal range and Kirk Cousins rallied the Falcons to an overtime victory. “That is one this year, the facemask seems like it was the obvious one” Vincent said. “That keeps showing up.” Vincent also cited hits on a defenseless player, tripping, the fair catch, an illegal batted ball, an illegal double-team block, illegal formations on kickoffs and taunting as other areas that warrant consideration for replay assist. Current rules only allow replay assist to help officials pick up a flag incorrectly thrown on the field, or in assisting proper enforcement of a foul called on the field. The NFL’s Competition Committee will review potential recommendations for owners to vote on for expanding replay assist. Vincent was emphatic about the league’s desire to eliminate low blocks that could lead to serious injuries. “The low block below the knee needs to be removed from the game,” Vincent said. “You look at high school, you look at college, too. Every block should be above the knee, but below the neck. All the work that we’ve done for the head and neck area, all the things that we’ve taken out of the game, this is the right time for us to remove the low block out of the game. Be consistent with high school. Be consistent with college. Every block should be above the knee and below the neck.” The league will consider changes to the onside kick after dramatically overhauling the kickoff rule on a one-year basis. “We need to look at that. That’s a dead play,” Vincent said of the onside kick’s low success rate. “That is a ceremonial play. Very low recovery rate. When we look at the kickoff and maybe where the touchback area should be during the offseason, we need to revisit the onside kick.” Options include giving the team an opportunity to run one play to gain a certain number of yards to keep possession. The Washington Commanders’ search for a new stadium site includes options in Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia, and work has escalated on one in particular. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and controlling owner Josh Harris met with lawmakers on Capitol Hill last week about the RFK Stadium site in Washington, which requires a bill getting through Congress to transfer the land to the District government before anything else can happen. “I think there’s a bipartisan support for this,” Goodell said, adding he’d like to see it get to a vote soon. “We hope that it will be addressed and approved so that it’s at least an alternative for the Commanders if we go forward. I grew up in Washington, and I know would be exciting for a lot of fans.” The NFL continues to discuss a potential 18-game season, but would need approval from the players’ union. “We are doing analysis I would say, but we are not finalizing any plans at this point,” Goodell said. “They’ll share that analysis with the players’ union, which would need to agree to any change.” AP Sports Writer Stephen Whyno contributed. AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nflThe Overwatch 2 devs added a secret new feature in the game’s latest update that wasn’t included in the patch notes – and it’s something players have requested for a long time. Back in Overwatch 1, the game had three unique PvP story events . These events contained a special feature that allowed players to see the health and status effects of everyone on their team at the top of their screen. This allowed support players to instantly see how their teammates were doing HP-wise and assist them. When Overwatch 2’s PvE story content was released in Season 6, this feature returned, but it was refined. Instead of being at the top, the devs moved the team’s HP to the bottom left side. The PvE campaign was ultimately reportedly canceled due to poor sales , but the teammate feature was a hit... So much so that players instantly requested that it be repurposed for the main PvP portion of OW2. Now, after years of waiting for this mechanic to be added to PvP, players have finally got their wish. Sort of. Overwatch 2 finally adds long-request UI feature, but there’s a catch As spotted by OW Cavalry, the latest Quick Play: Hacked event dubbed ‘Kingmaker’ has introduced this PvE feature, and it’s available in the game’s options settings. Players can enable it by going to their settings and selecting ‘PVP Team Overlay.’ This lets users see teammates’ health and status effects right above their own health bar. Party Frames might be coming soon to #Overwatch2 👀 The latest Quick Play: Hacked introduces new UI for viewing teammates' health and status. This can be toggled in the settings under "PVP Team Overlay." Do you want to see this in the main game? 💭 pic.twitter.com/BSNscU6bh0 Fans were quickly in favor of the option, with many insisting that it would be an extremely helpful quality-of-life change for support players. Related: “I think it’s a great addition to the game and will help everyone in the team,” one said . Another chimed in : “Been wanting this since I started playing support, my situational awareness is not ready for a mute team bro.” “Would also be nice to have a bit of customization with size and opacity, but for now this would be awesome to have so I don’t have to look at Leaderboard as much to tell if we’ve got numbers,” someone else suggested. God, yes please. Would also be nice to have a bit of customization with size and opacity, but for now this would be awesome to have so I don't have to look at Leaderboard as much to tell if we've got numbers. Interestingly, this change wasn’t included in the Kingmaker patch notes . Instead, they simply explain that Kingmaker is a limited-time mode that caps a role at two players. However, the role that only has one player receives a bonus effect, such as reduced cooldowns or a health buff. We’ll have to see if Blizzard decides to make this a permanent feature once Season 14 launches on December 10 alongside the latest tank hero Hazard .CHENNAI: Indian space-tech startups funding declined in 2024 (YTD), for the first time since 2018, despite the overall tech startup funding scenario improving 6% with $11.3 billion investments. Space funding fell more than 53% with a $59 million equity raise compared to $128 million last year, data sourced from Tracxn shows. While seed stage funding rose, early-stage funding dropped 65%. Despite the govt opening up certain domains in the sector in February, equity from foreign funds, full round amounts where at least one foreign investor has participated, fell 65% to $43.2 million. But industry stakeholders see this as a blip and are hopeful of revival based on growing appetite from govt and private players and increasing commercialisation by startups. Vishesh Rajaram, managing partner at Speciale Invest, a firm with multiple space bets, said year-on-year comparison to the sector will not show the full picture since the gestation period is longer. “Space startups do not need growth capital every year and it cannot be compared like consumer-tech companies. Overall momentum of the ecosystem is good with startups crossing significant milestones. Also, the number of venture firms interested in the sector has gone up,” he said. Neha Singh, co-founder of Tracxn, the market intelli- gence platform, said, “While there is a slight increase this year it is still lower than the $25.4 billion in 2022. This shows funding winter is behind for Indian startups and they are in a better place compared to global startups,” she said. She said the recovery is expected in the space sector as companies prove their capabilities and the likelihood of traditional investors participating in the maturing players. Awais Ahmed, chief executive and founder of Pixxel said the Indian startup ecosystem is evolving with many starting around 2015-16. “Currently fundraising happens mostly in pre-seed and seed rounds and very few companies have raised beyond that. But we can expect more companies to raise series A and beyond in coming years,” he said. “Space is a multi-decadal thing and fruits of measures like liberalising foreign direct investments will be seen in five to10 years as companies will raise big-ticket funding in late-stages,” he said. He said companies need to have a sight on revenue and align their technological capabilities with market demands to grow to the next stage. Lt.Gen. A K Bhatt (retd), DG of Indian Space Association said public-private partnership in ISRO’s heavy lift launcher LVM3 and IN-SPACe’s earth observation constellation will generate demand for next five years. The left’s continued pursuit of so-called “social justice” has now taken an interesting turn: It has led to an all-out war on women. It has done so with an agenda so detached from reality that it threatens to undermine the very foundation of what womanhood even means. Last week, the lunacy of gender ideology hit a new low when over two dozen radical trans activists stormed a women’s restroom in the US Capitol. The stunt was meant to protest my efforts to protect women’s private spaces . Among those arrested was Chelsea Manning — a biological male who made headlines for leaking classified military secrets . These activists were not out to just disrupt the legislative process; they were making a public spectacle out of putting men in women’s bathrooms so as to intimidate women and make a political statement. This isn’t progress — it’s an assault on the dignity, privacy and safety of women. The entire transgender movement collapses under one simple question: What is a woman? And absolutely no one on the left can seem to define what a woman is with any sense of reality. Being a woman isn’t an abstract concept. It’s not a feeling, or a checkbox on a form. It’s real. It’s biological. It’s science . The truth is, the Democratic Party can’t be the party of women when it is constantly selling us out to placate the loudest, most extreme and most violent voices in its ranks. Progressive campaigns, when grounded in reality and aimed at addressing real injustices, has been some of the greatest forces for good in history. The women’s suffrage movement, the fight to end segregation, and the civil rights movement proved what sincere activists can achieve when their work is rooted in truth and common sense. But in 2024, the left’s relentless push for so-called “progress” has gone off the rails. It’s been hijacked by a radical egalitarianism that rejects biology, science and basic truth, tearing apart societal norms and insisting that a man can become a woman just by saying it. This isn’t progress — it’s a dangerous rejection of reality threatening everything women have fought for. In their pursuit of endless change, everything is up for grabs — as evidenced by their quest to conquer women’s restrooms, changing rooms and locker rooms. Tomorrow, who knows what they’ll push? It’s not progress to erase women. It’s not equality to make women less safe. And it’s certainly not feminism to force women to take a back seat to mentally ill men. Real advocacy for women is about action to protect them from real harm, not virtue-signaling. It’s about ensuring every woman has access to the tools and protections she needs to live, work, and attain the American Dream. It’s about addressing the real challenges women face — not redefining what a woman is . Advocating for women means fighting for access to contraception, ensuring couples struggling with infertility can afford IVF, and eliminating the rape kit backlog so survivors aren’t left waiting years for justice. It means safeguarding the privacy and safety of women in restrooms, locker rooms, prisons and shelters. It means guaranteeing women’s constitutional rights under Article IV, giving them equal protection under the law. But Democrats don’t care about these issues. Instead, they care about prioritizing policies that blur the lines between the sexes and force women to compete with biological men in sports , share their private spaces and forfeit their opportunities. They’re unapologetically erasing women right in front of us. These aren’t abstract fears. They’re happening in real time, and women are losing out because of it. If it were up to the left, women would have nowhere to go. If Democrats want to claim they’re for women, they need to start acting like it. Until then, the gender-ideology crusade will be a winning issue for Republicans as women see the leftist progressive agenda for what it is: An erasure of everything we as women have ever fought to achieve. Republican Rep. Nancy Mace represents South Carolina’s 1st District in Congress.
