Season of scamsSir Keir Starmer will set out a “plan for change” with milestones set in key policy areas to achieve the targets laid out in Labour’s manifesto, Downing Street has said. The Prime Minister will this week kick off what he has called the “next phase” of Government, as he announces the markers for his “missions” that Number 10 say will allow the public to hold Sir Keir and his team to account on their promises and will be reached by the end of the Parliament. The milestones will run alongside public sector reform, Downing Street said. This will include a focus on reforming Whitehall, spearheaded by the as-yet-unannounced new chief civil servant the Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet ministers, so it is geared towards the delivery of Labour’s missions, according to Number 10. The same focus will also influence decisions for next year’s spending review, it has been suggested. Writing in The Sun on Sunday, the Prime Minister compared “focusing the machinery of government” to “turning an oil tanker” and said that “acceptance of managed decline” has “seeped into parts of Whitehall”. “The British people aren’t fools. They know a ruthless focus on priorities is essential,” he wrote. The Sunday Times reported that one of the milestones would focus on early education, with the aim to raise the number of children who are ready for school, educationally and socially. Cabinet Office minister Pat McFadden said that “it’s estimated that more than a million school days worth of teacher time each year is spent dealing with” children who are not prepared for school. Labour’s missions, as laid out in their July election manifesto, focus on economic growth, energy security and cleaner energy, the NHS, childcare and education systems, as well as crime and criminal justice. Ahead of revealing the details, Sir Keir said in a statement: “This plan for change is the most ambitious yet honest programme for government in a generation. “Mission-led government does not mean picking milestones because they are easy or will happen anyway – it means relentlessly driving real improvements in the lives of working people. “We are already fixing the foundations and have kicked-started our first steps for change, stabilising the economy, setting up a new Border Security Command, and investing £22 billion in an NHS that is fit for the future. “Our plan for change is the next phase of delivering this Government’s mission. “Some may oppose what we are doing and no doubt there will be obstacles along the way, but this Government was elected on mandate of change and our plan reflects the priorities of working people. “Given the unprecedented challenges we have inherited we will not achieve this by simply doing more of the same, which is why investment comes alongside a programme of innovation and reform.” The so-called “missions” outlined in Labour’s election manifesto focused on five key policy areas: kickstart economic growth; make Britain a clean energy superpower; take back our streets; break down barriers to opportunity; and build an NHS fit for the future. 🚨 New polling with @ObserverUK Keir Starmer has seen an 8 point drop in his net approval rating after a significant uptick in the number disapproving of his performance. 22% approve of his performance vs. 54% who disapprove. Polling for The Observer newspaper by Opinium indicates that more than half of the public disapprove of the Prime Minister’s performance. According to the survey of approximately 2,000 adults, 54% of people disapprove of his performance, compared with 22% who approve, leaving him with a net rating of -32%.

Lou Carnesecca invited the several newspaper writers who covered the team to a season-ending lunch at Dante Restaurant, his longtime hangout near campus. Why not? It seemed like a nice gesture. So this then-30-year-old reporter told his editor he would be gone for a bit and set out from Newsday’s Queens office. Six hours later . . . I left the restaurant with a better sense of what a casual lunch with Carnesecca entailed, and with a quintessential New York experience. Rather than the small table of sportswriters I envisioned, there were long ones that filled the restaurant with several dozen of Looie’s closest friends. Menus? Um, no. Just rounds of Italian food as chosen by the chef, and even more rounds of red wine bottles. Scenes from an Italian restaurant on Union Turnpike, hosted by Lou Carnesecca, complete with heartburn and a hangover. Why bring this up now? Because it is one way among many of illustrating the life and times of Carnesecca, who died Saturday at age 99. To call him old school would be an understatement. The guy was born in 1925, two years before television. His father, Alfredo, ran a grocery store in East Harlem. Carnesecca lived his entire life in and around New York City other than during his service in World War II and evolved only grudgingly. He was a character who reveled in being a character, most of it genuine, some of it shtick and all of it memorable. And as much as he was a New Yorker out of central casting himself, he knew almost every other famous New Yorker in the sports world of the middle-to-late 20th century. And non-New Yorkers, too. PAUL BURNETT In an interview with Newsday late in 2023, two weeks before his 99th birthday, he was able to offer firsthand opinions on iconic coaches the likes of Joe Lapchick, John Wooden, Frank McGuire, Adolph Rupp, Nat Holman, Ben Carnevale, Clair Bee and, yes, Rick Pitino. Like others with images so colorful they threatened to overshadow their accomplishments – Yogi Berra comes to mind – it was easy to forget Carnesecca knew basketball in general, knew recruiting the streets of New York City in particular and was no one’s pushover. Most famously, he made the transition from the ancient days of Eastern college basketball’s loose affiliations to become a towering figure in the early Big East. The pinnacle came in 1985, when he led St. John’s to the Final Four before it fell to mighty Georgetown. The rivalry between St. John’s and Georgetown that season was and remains one of the highlights in New York City’s long love affair with college basketball. And it cemented New York’s long love affair with Carnesecca. The feeling was mutual, to understate things. He lived out his final years in Queens, still sharp and witty. When St. John’s hired Pitino, an old Big East rival, as its coach in 2023, the then-98-year-old showed up at the introductory news conference. “Lou built a legendary program – legendary – and we will get back to those days by exemplifying everything that he taught,” Pitino said, pointing to Carnesecca. As he left the event that day, the old man said, “This is a great day, a great day.” Carnesecca loved all the attention he got in one of his first public outings since the COVID-19 pandemic. People were his lifeblood, and he could kibitz and zing one-liners with the best of them, from recruits to fans to reporters. Asked on the cusp of turning 99 what kept him going, he said, “It must be the olive oil.” Recalling when he denied his father’s wish that he become a doctor, he said, “I thank God in his infinite wisdom. He knew I would have caused more deaths than the bubonic plague.” Journalists usually must approach modern coaching stars through protective public relations folks. How did one get an audience with Carnesecca? By showing up unannounced at his office and asking his secretary, “Is Coach around?” (He was the only coach I called “Coach” in 40 years of sportswriting.) Privately, Carnesecca had a tough side that he could and would aim at those who crossed him. But his public face never wavered, and his famously raspy voice and accent said it all. Could this happen to my company? That was surely one of the questions running through the minds of the assembled tech leaders and founders attending the tell-all fireside chat between Sampler founder and former CEO Marie Chevrier Schwartz and BetaKit editor-in-chief Douglas Soltys at SAAS NORTH 2024 on Nov. 13. “In hindsight, [the pandemic] made me, as a leader, ultimately ignore some of the fundamentals of the business that were very difficult.” On The BetaKit Keynote Stage at SAAS NORTH, an “extremely nervous” Schwartz unpacked the factors that led to her decade-old business folding after earlier this year. Schwartz, who had not spoken publicly on Sampler’s shuttering until after BetaKit’s story in August, told the SAAS NORTH audience she had decided to tackle the stigma surrounding failure. She hoped to let everyone in attendance know that they’ll likely fail at some point too—and that’s OK. “In my reflection, I realized that if I was feeling lonely, and 80 to 90 percent of businesses fail, then there’s a lot of people who have felt lonely, and a lot of people who will feel lonely,” she said. “If I could be an example of someone who survived through that failure, perhaps we as a community of founders could rebound faster [in the future.]” “I’m using failure with intent today, because I don’t want to be ashamed of saying ‘failure,’ Schwartz added. “In many ways, it’s not a failure. But people might label it as that, and I think that’s OK.” Founded in 2014 and based in Toronto, Sampler created a digital platform for product samples of consumer packaged goods (CPGs). Working with clients like Unilever and L’Oreal, and retailers like Kroger, Sampler reached 4.5 million users across Canada and the United States, with 1,000 CPG brands and agencies as customers and $10 million in annual recurring revenue. At the date of its bankruptcy filing, Sampler had total liabilities of $12.9 million and total assets of more than $300,000. Addressing the attentive crowd, Schwartz detailed what went wrong at the company. From her perspective, Sampler suffered from a series of market shifts from which it could not recover. “In summary, Sampler lost product-market fit 10 years into running its business.” Schwartz noted the COVID-19 pandemic “significantly accelerated” Sampler’s business initially as consumers moved away from brick-and-mortar stores and squarely into its domain of online retail. The former CEO said she took this as a signal to significantly invest in the business and gear up for international expansion, but acknowledged it likely wasn’t the right move. “In hindsight, [the pandemic] made me, as a leader, ultimately ignore some of the fundamentals of the business that were very difficult,” Schwartz said. She added that, while Sampler positioned itself as a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) company for the sake of fundraising, the company was ultimately beholden to the constraints of the physical, not digital world—namely, shipping and logistics. “At the end of the day, we had something like a 35 to 40 percent margin. We had very difficult unit economics,” she confessed. In the midst of a pandemic-fuelled surge in demand, the low margins didn’t matter as much. But when the impacted Sampler’s CPG customers, the reality was laid bare. As boats full of goods sat in ports, CPG brands were missing key ingredients for their products, Schwartz explained. If a potato chip manufacturer couldn’t stock shelves with product, they weren’t going to provide samples. Sampler continued to see growth until it was hit with the higher shipping costs that followed in the pandemic’s wake. The United States Postal Service increased Sampler’s delivery costs by 200 percent, according to Schwartz, eating further into the company’s margins. As the world began to open back up Sampler’s customers were then very eager to return to in-person shopping. “All of us wanted to go pick our veggies again, so that was bad for the business,” Schwartz said. “In summary, Sampler lost product-market fit 10 years into running its business.” Amid these troubles, and one year before declaring bankruptcy, Sampler became a buyer to try and expand its business while courting a Series B funding round to extend its runway. Sampler beauty industry digital sampling agency Abeo in April 2023 to strengthen its underperforming beauty category and accelerate its expansion into Europe and the United States. The company’s second acquisition, , came three months later. The artificial intelligence-powered software was meant to help brands and their agencies create data-driven, user-generated content promotions. Sampler hoped it could start leveraging its large dataset to monetize new features following a more conventional SaaS business model that Schwartz hoped would provide the company higher margins. “We were very confident that the strategy would hit traction fast enough for us to raise our next round,” Schwartz said before taking a short beat. “We were unable to raise the next round.” Schwartz said her investors were with her “in the trenches,” sending her meals and offering to hire a nanny as she tried to juggle her company’s woes while expecting a baby. The CEO also made clear to the audience that it was her responsibility to find new investors who would get her company to the Series B level. But the market demand wasn’t there, and Schwartz claimed she was fundraising while a “huge exit” of venture capital from the CPG space was taking place. Ultimately, all those factors together signalled that her business was no longer viable. Toward the end of the conversation, Schwartz acknowledged that she wasn’t the only one affected by Sampler’s failure, noting its impact on investors, partners, and employees. She detailed how it felt to lose everything she built her professional identity around, while navigating the confusing process of bankruptcy. “What happens in bankruptcy is that, one day, you have everybody working together, and then the next day there’s ,” she recalled. “Your email gets shut down. You have to return your laptop, it’s gone.” “You don’t have any funds left, right?” Schwartz later added. “So you can’t pay the lawyer, you can’t pay the accountant, your investors are in a conflict and so, frankly, there’s just nothing for you to find.” Schwartz noted that being open about Sampler’s failure has helped create a support network as rediscovers her passions. Now the CEO of tech community organization , she’s dedicating her time to supporting those taking on “the extreme sport of building technology companies.” Schwartz currently has at least one person per week asking for her help navigating the unspoken parts of the bankruptcy process, reinforcing that Sampler’s struggles are not an isolated incident in Canadian tech. She is working with “a few folks” on a project to help make that process easier to understand, and made a pitch to accounting or law firms in attendance at SAAS NORTH for their support. NoneBRIDGEWATER TOWNSHIP, New Jersey (WABC) -- Police announced the arrest of a 60-year-old man from Canada in connection to the 1997 cold-case murder of a woman in New Jersey. Tamara Tignor's body was discovered on a dirt road around 4:30 p.m. on Nov. 4, 1997. The 23-year-old's manner of death was determined to be homicide but her murder was never solved. In January 2023, detectives determined that evidence collected in the investigation could be resubmitted for DNA testing that was not possible in years past. As a result, in April of that year, Robert Creter, 60, was determined to be a likely match. Creter was 33 years old in 1997, when investigators believe he picked up Tignor, sexually assaulted her and then strangled her, leaving her body in the woods near Washington Valley Park. where it was spotted hours later by someone riding an ATV. Detectives said Creter relocated to Winnipeg, Canada, in 2002, but charges of murder were authorized in May of 2023. On June 27, 2024, Creter was taken into custody by Canadian authorities based on the New Jersey arrest warrant. He was then extradited to the U.S. on Nov. 26 and was transported to the Somerset County Jail. "The arrest of a suspect in this decades-old case is a testament to the unwavering dedication of law enforcement to seek justice, no matter how much time has passed," said Colonel Patrick J. Callahan, Superintendent of the New Jersey State Police. "The Garden State Cold Case Network and the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) Grant have been invaluable tools in revisiting unsolved cases, utilizing advanced technology and investigative techniques to bring new hope to victims' families. This achievement highlights the power of collaboration among local, state, and federal partners to bring closure to those who have waited far too long for answers." Chandigarh : In the Punjab Assembly by-elections , the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won three out of four seats. AAP won Gidderbaha, Chabbewal and Dera Baba Nanak assembly seats in the by-poll. These three seats were previously held by the Congress. In the 2022 Assembly elections, Congress candidates Amarinder Raja Warring won from Gidderbaha, Sukhjinder Randhawa from Dera Baba Nanak, and Rajkumar Chabbewal from Chabbewal. After winning these three seats, the number of AAP legislators in the Assembly has now increased to 94. After the victory, AAP leaders celebrated at the party office in Chandigarh. Leaders and workers distributed sweets to congratulate each other. During the celebration, minister Harjot Bains, legislator Kulwant Singh, and the party's state general secretary Jagroop Singh Sekhwan, along with several other party officials and leaders, were present. AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal congratulated all the newly elected MLAs and thanked the people of Punjab for their continued trust in the Aam Aadmi Party. He said, “The people of Punjab have once again expressed their faith in Aam Aadmi Party’s ideology and the work of our government by giving us three out of four seats in the by-elections. Thank you very much to the people of Punjab, and congratulations to everyone!” Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann also congratulated and said: “Many congratulations to Punjabis for the spectacular win in the by-elections. Under the leadership of Arvind Kejriwal, the Aam Aadmi Party is reaching new heights across the country every day. We are working day and night with honesty and without discrimination for the progress and prosperity of Punjab. We will prioritise fulfilling every promise made to the people during the by-elections.” The party's national Organization Secretary Sandeep Pathak, the party's Punjab in-charge Jarnail Singh, and Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha also thanked the people and wished the best to the new legislators. Pathak credited this victory to the party's workers and appreciated their hard work. Jarnail Singh said that today's results once again proved that Kejriwal's magic “is intact and that people are happy with the work of the Mann government”. He said this is the result of years of hard work by our leaders and workers. The Aam Aadmi Party is consistently receiving love and support from the people of Punjab. The AAP government is also working dedicatedly to make Punjab prosperous and happy. Rajya Sabha MP Chadha said the people's trust in Kejriwal and Mann's visionary leadership and honest politics is continuously growing. “The welfare work of the AAP government has impressed the people of Punjab,” he said. He also congratulated the party workers and supporters for winning three seats in the by-elections. AAP new Punjab President Aman Arora said that under the leadership and guidance of Kejriwal, the Aam Aadmi Party has won three out of four seats in the by-elections. He said the party workers, office-bearers, and leaders worked very hard in this election. “This victory is the result of their hard work.” The party’s working president, Aman Sher Singh Sherry Kalsi, said the party has achieved this victory due to the capable leadership of Kejriwal and Chief Minister Mann.Reagan , the biopic chronicling the life of beloved Republican president Ronald Reagan, is now available on streaming, DVD, and Blu-Ray months after a successful run in cinemas. True to Dennis Quaid’s point about past American greatness, the movie also wisely steers clear of partisan cheap shots by portraying former Democrat House Speaker Tip O’Neill (deftly played by Dan Lauria) as a decent man who befriended Reagan despite their political differences, recalling a time when Americans of varying persuasions could agree to disagree.
