NVR Inc. stock underperforms Wednesday when compared to competitorsMAUPIN — The No. 5-ranked South Wasco County High Redsides capped a fabulous season by advancing to the OSAA Class 1A six-man football semifinals where they lost, 40-30, on Nov. 23 against top-ranked Powers. The game was played at Cottage Grove High School, where the Redsides finished their season with an 8-4 record, while the No. 1-ranked Cruisers (11-0) advanced to the championship game against Harper. “We took a great group of kids who have been playing football together for a long time and we built them into something bigger than we expected and they were able to compete at a really high level this year,” said Coach Mike Waine. “When we look back on the season, we can proudly say that the only teams we lost to, were the teams in the state championship game. We played both of those teams early in the season and when we met them again, we played them even better.” The contest was a rematch of an Aug. 30 season opening nonleague loss between the two squads, which Powers won, 66-29, at home. “We had several opportunities to possibly get a win against Powers, but it just wasn’t meant to be for us this year,” said Waine. South Wasco took the lead at the outset when junior receiver George Barnett (five catches, 147 yards receiving) scored on a 56-yard touchdown reception on a pass from senior quarterback Storm McCoy (18-for-33, 431 yards passing, four touchdowns). Sophomore Marcel Sandoval kicked the two-point PAT, lifting the Redsides in front 8-0 with 9:01 left in the first quarter. The Redsides remained on top for most of the opening quarter until the Cruisers scored a touchdown with 1:39 left, making it 13-8 and they never trailed again. Both squads scored two second-quarter touchdowns: South Wasco senior Marcos Chavez scored on a 14-yard touchdown reception on a McCoy pass; Coy Shirley scored on an 18-yard touchdown pass from McCoy. The Cruisers outscored the Redsides 14-8 in the third quarter, to make the score final. The Redsides’ TD came from Gavin Hagan (seven catches, 190 yards receiving) on an 88-yard receptioin from McCoy. It was final prep football game for seniors McCoy, Hagan, Nicholas Packard, Coy Shirley, Chavez and Xavior Baca. Hagan led the Redsides defensively with a team leading 12 tackles. Waine said: “The seniors are an incredible group of athletes, and they were probably the smartest guys that we’ve ever had on the football team. We were able to turn them loose on audibles on offense while letting the receivers choose their own routes to run. They were the most intelligent group we’ve ever had because they were able to execute defensive schemes with every formation that we had. “They were a great crew and they were good leaders for the younger guys; so, they set the bar high for sure.”Making a $1B investment in the US? Trump pledges expedited permits — but there are hurdles WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump is promising expedited federal permits for energy projects and other construction worth more than $1 billion. But like other Trump plans, the idea is likely to run into regulatory and legislative hurdles, including a landmark law that requires federal agencies to consider the environmental impact before deciding on major projects. Environmental groups called the plan a clear violation of the National Environmental Policy Act. The chief policy advocacy officer at the Natural Resources Defense Council says Trump should be careful what he wishes for. She said, "What if someone wants to build a waste incinerator next to Mar-a-Lago or a coal mine next to Bedminster golf course?” Trump names Andrew Ferguson as head of Federal Trade Commission to replace Lina Khan WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump has named Andrew Ferguson to be the next chair of the Federal Trade Commission. Ferguson is already one of the FTC's five commissioners. He will replace Lina Khan, who became a lightning rod for Wall Street and Silicon Valley by blocking billions of dollars’ worth of corporate acquisitions and suing Amazon and Meta while alleging anticompetitive behavior. Trump wrote on Truth Social on Tuesday evening that Ferguson has “a proven record of standing up to Big Tech censorship, and protecting Freedom of Speech in our Great Country.” The replacement of Khan likely means that the FTC will operate with a lighter touch when it comes to antitrust enforcement. Proposed merger of Kroger and Albertsons is halted by federal, state judges The proposed $24.6 billion merger between supermarket giants Kroger and Albertsons floundered on Tuesday after judges overseeing two separate cases both halted the merger. A federal judge in Oregon temporarily blocked the proposed merger until an in-house administrative judge at the Federal Trade Commission considers it. Shortly afterward, a judge in Washington state issued a permanent injunction barring the merger in that state, saying it lessens competition. Kroger and Albertsons in 2022 proposed what would be the largest grocery store merger in U.S. history. But the Federal Trade Commission and the state of Washington sued earlier this year. Kroger and Albertsons said Tuesday they are disappointed in the decisions and are reviewing their options. Biden says he was 'stupid' not to put his name on pandemic relief checks like Trump did WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden says he was “stupid” not to put his own name on pandemic relief checks in 2021, like Donald Trump had done in 2020. He noted Tuesday in a speech at the Brookings Institution that Trump likely got credit for helping people out through this simple, effective act of branding. Biden did the second-guessing as he defended his economic record and challenged Trump to preserve Democratic policy ideas when he returns to the White House next month. Trump’s decision to add his name to the checks sent by the U.S. Treasury to millions of Americans struggling during the coronavirus marked the first time a president’s name appeared on any IRS payments. Former chairman of state-owned bank China Everbright Group jailed for 12 years for corruption BEIJING (AP) — Chinese official broadcaster CCTV says a former chairman of the state-owned bank China Everbright Group has been jailed 12 years for embezzlement and bribery. Tang Shuangning, who had also held senior posts at the People’s Bank of China and the China Banking Regulatory Commission, was arrested in January, part of a wider wave of prosecutions of senior officials accused of financial crimes. A court in the city of Tangshan, about 100 miles east of Beijing, found him guilty of taking advantage of his position at the state-owned bank in “seeking convenience for others” in jobs and loans, in exchange for illegal payments. The court said he had accepted illegal property with a total value of more than $1.5 million. Trustee over Infowars auction asks court to approve The Onion's winning bid A trustee who oversaw the bankruptcy auction of Alex Jones’ Infowars is asking a judge to approve The Onion’s winning bid for the conspiracy-filled platform. Trustee Christopher Murray took the stand Tuesday in the second day of testimony at a hearing where a judge is scrutinizing the satirical news outlet’s winning offer. He told U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Christopher Lopez in Houston that he was there asking a court to approve the sale of Infowars’ parent company to The Onion’s parent company. It is not clear how quickly Lopez will rule. The Onion wants to turn Infowars’ website and social media accounts into parodies. GM to retreat from robotaxis and stop funding its Cruise autonomous vehicle unit DETROIT (AP) — General Motors says it will retreat from the robotaxi business and stop funding its money-losing Cruise autonomous vehicle unit. Instead the Detroit automaker will focus on development of partially automated driver-assist systems like its Super Cruise, which allows drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel. In a statement Tuesday, GM said it would get out of robotaxis due to what it described as the considerable time and resources that would be needed to scale the business, along with an increasingly competitive robotaxi market. What did you Google in 2024? From the elections to Copa América, here's what search trends show NEW YORK (AP) — Remember what you searched for in 2024? Google does. Google has released its annual “Year in Search," rounding up 2024's top trending searches. It shows terms that saw the highest spike in traffic compared to last year. Sports — particularly soccer and cricket — dominated overall search trends, led by queries for Copa América, the UEFA European Championship and ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Meanwhile, the U.S. election led news-specific searches worldwide. Queries about excessive heat and this year’s Olympic Games followed. U.S. President-elect Donald Trump topped searches in Google’s people category this year — followed by Catherine, Princess of Wales, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris and Algerian boxer Imane Khelif. US defense secretary in Japan to support alliance as Osprey aircraft safety causes concern TOKYO (AP) — U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has met with officials in Japan to reaffirm the importance of their alliance and Washington's commitment to regional security as threats rise from China and North Korea. Austin’s visit on Tuesday also came amid growing concerns over the safety of Ospreys. The military aircraft have been grounded in the United States following a near crash at Cannon Air Force Base in New Mexico last month. The incident was caused by weakened metal components. It was similar to a fatal crash off southwestern Japan last year. The U.S. measure prompted the suspension of Ospreys operated by Japan’s Ground Self-Defense Force. Small businesses plan events, start marketing earlier to deal with shorter holiday shopping season The holiday shopping season is underway, and this year small businesses have less time to capitalize on the busy shopping period. Only 27 days separate Thanksgiving and Christmas — five fewer than last year. But there are still ways to make the most of a shorter season. One key strategy is for owners to promote deals to customers wherever they can, from social media to physical ads. The National Retail Federation predicts that retail sales will rise between 2.5% and 3.5% compared with same period a year ago. Online shopping is expected to grow too. Adobe Digital Insights predicts an 8.4% increase online for the full season.

The RBI and the Maldives Monetary Authority on Thursday signed an agreement here for establishing a framework to promote the use of local currencies -- the Indian Rupee and the Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR) for cross-border transactions . The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by Governor of Reserve Bank of India Shaktikanta Das and Governor of Maldives Monetary Authority Ahmed Munawar. "The MoU encourages the use of INR and MVR in current account transactions, permissible capital account transactions and any other economic and financial transactions as agreed upon by both countries," the RBI said in a statement. This framework would enable exporters and importers to invoice and settle in their respective domestic currencies, which in turn would enable the development of trading in the INR-MVR pair in foreign exchange market. Use of local currencies would optimise costs and settlement time for transactions, the RBI added. "This collaboration marks a key milestone in strengthening bilateral cooperation between RBI and MMA," it said. DALLAS — After losing Juan Soto’s generational bat to the Mets , the Yankees chose to fortify a strength. The pennant-winning team has agreed to an eight-year, $218 million contract with longtime Braves starter Max Fried, according to multiple reports. The deal is the largest guarantee in baseball history for a southpaw and the fourth-largest contract for a pitcher in baseball history. Fried’s pact also includes a no-trade clause, but no opt-outs or deferrals, per the New York Post’s Joel Sherman. Sherman added that the Rangers and rival Red Sox were also late contenders for Fried. Fried’s average annual value of $27.25 million is slightly higher than that of new teammate and fellow lefty Carlos Rodón, who signed a six-year, $162 million contract with the Yankees before the 2023 season. With Gerrit Cole serving as the Yankees’ ace, Fried gives the Yankees a better No. 2 after eight seasons in Atlanta. The 30-year-old has a 3.07 ERA for his career. Fried has also been fairly durable, pitching full seasons in five of the last six years. Still, the Yankees are making a large commitment for a pitcher who has logged 180 innings just once in his career. Last season, Fried went 11-10 with a 3.25 ERA and 166 strikeouts over 29 starts and 174.1 innings for Atlanta while making his second All-Star team. A soft contact pitcher with a high groundball rate, Fried uses a seven-pitch arsenal that features a four-seamer, curveball, sinker, changeup, sweeper, slider and cutter. In addition to a strong regular season track record, Fried brings championship experience to the Yankees, as he won a World Series with the Braves in 2021. However, he has a 5.10 ERA over 20 postseason games, including 12 starts. A large Yankees contingent, including Brian Cashman, Aaron Boone and Matt Blake, first Zoomed with Fried last week . Meanwhile, special assistant Omar Minaya surely offered some insight, as he was the Padres’ senior vice president of baseball operations when they drafted Fried seventh overall in 2012. With Fried on board, the Yankees are improving a rotation that wasn’t all that weak for them in 2024. On Monday, Cashman suggested that the team could double down on strengths after Soto’s bat defected to Flushing. “Obviously, we just lost a big offensive force, but we also have guys that are certainly capable and quality and impactful,” Cashman said. “So, how can I add to that? Is it run prevention? Is it run creation? Is it a little bit of both? How it all adds up together, it’s all yet to be determined.” With Cole, Fried, Rodón, Clarke Schmidt, Luis Gil, Nestor Cortes and Marcus Stroman all on hand, the Yankees can now deal from an area of strength. The Yankees would love to get out of Stroman’s contract after he struggled in the second half and didn’t pitch in the postseason, but they’d have to sweeten any deal he’s involved in. Stroman is owed $18.5 million in 2025 and can make the same money in 2026 if he totals 140 innings next year. Cortes could be a more attractive trade chip, though the lefty suffered a late-season flexor strain before returning for the World Series. With the rotation reinforced, the Yankees now have questions at second or third — Jazz Chisholm Jr. can play both — first base and in the outfield. They also have some openings in their bullpen.
