Riding the subway is a rite of passage for those living in and visiting New York City. Surely, if you spent 16 seasons playing football in the Big Apple, you would have hopped on the train at least a handful of times. Not Eli Manning. The former Giants quarterback shared a photo of himself on X at an underground station this week with the caption, “First time riding the subway!” Fans and New Yorkers alike were, understandably, blown away. “Dude has lived in NYC area for 20 years and it’s the first time ever riding on the subway? Thats absurd,” Jake Asman wrote on the platform. “Best evidence the Giants are a New Jersey team,” Politico’s Jeff Coltin joked. “Congestion pricing is working. This middle aged man from New Jersey is riding public transit,” an X user named Matt Janiga wrote. “I forgot how rich people have it sometimes,” @JetsMuse wrote . The social media version of Manning can be a bit of a troll, as he proved this week with a back-and-forth with Tom Brady , so it’s unclear if it was truly the two-time Super Bowl champion’s first time on the subway. On Monday, Brady shared a photo holding a fish while basking in the sunlight — Manning seized on the opportunity, sharing a side-by-side shot of his much larger catch in comparison on Instagram with the caption, “Cute Minnow, Tom!” “You use a helmet to catch that one too?” Brady quipped, in a callback to the Patriots-Giants Super Bowl clash at the end of the 2007 season.Stock market today: Tech stocks and AI pull Wall Street toward more records
HPE Earnings Beat As Quarterly AI Server Revenue Hits $1.5 BillionIn a major breakthrough, Punjab Police’s State Special Operation Cell (SSOC) Amritsar, has busted a narco-terror module being operated by foreign-based handlers with the arrest of its two members, who also confessed to have lobbed a hand-grenade at Islamabad Police Station in Amritsar, said Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav here on Saturday. Those arrested have been identified as Gurjeet Singh, a resident of Dande in Gharinda, Amritsar and Baljit Singh, a resident of Chhapa in Tarn Taran. Police teams have also recovered 1.4 kg heroin, one hand grenade and two sophisticated pistols— one 9MM Zigana and one 9MM Glock— along with ammunition from their possession. Advertisement The development came in little more than 10 days after the incident reported at Islamabad Police Station at around 3 am on December 17, 2024. Few hours after the incident, Foreign-based Jeevan Fauji, who is associated with the Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), had used social media platform to claim the responsibility for this act of terror. Advertisement DGP Gaurav Yadav said that SSOC Amritsar had received a secret information that a USA-based hardcore drug smuggler Sandeep Singh alias Seepu is running a smuggling network and getting consignments of drugs and weapons from Pakistan to supply them in India through his associates. Acting swiftly on inputs, the teams of SSOC Amritsar arrested one associate identified as Gurjeet Singh and recovered 1.4 kg heroin from his possession, he said. The DGP said that the meticulous investigations and sustained follow-up of backward and forward linkages in the arrest of Gurjeet Singh revealed that the latter along with his accomplice Baljit Singh has also carried out grenade attack at Police Station Islamabad on the instructions of a foreign-based person, introduced to him by Sandeep Seepu. He said that further investigations are ongoing to ascertain the terrorist organisation behind the attack at Police Station and identify the foreign based person introduced by Seepu. Sharing more details, AIG SSOC Amritsar Sukhminder Singh Mann said that the police teams have also arrested Baljit Singh and during further investigations one hand grenade and two pistols along with ammunition were recovered from duo. He said that further investigations are being conducted to unearth this entire network and efforts are being made to track the previous consignments transported by the accused. In this regard, a fresh case FIR No. 74 dated 26.12.2024 has been registered under sections 21, 23-c and 29 of the NDPS Act, section 25 of the Arms Act and sections 3, 4 and 5 of the Explosive Act at Police Station SSOC Amritsar. AdvertisementO n the edge of a new year, the Readers’ Editor column goes both backward and forward – no, don’t worry, it isn’t your regular `this-was-the-year-that-was’ and `what to expect in 2025’ kind of article. Instead, it will focus on two very different aspects of ThePrint’s news content in 2024: first, it will look back at the value of good old-fashioned reporting in coverage of the Manipur crisis. Then, it will turn to what the future may look like as you see more and more visually interactive storytelling on the platform – a graphic representation of the news, the kind that brought to life a river in spate and the subsequent landslides in Wayanad , which left at least 250 people dead. These stories represent the blend of solid ground reporting and newer technological tools, which help ThePrint to offer journalism that is accurate, credible, and as engaging as possible. ThePrint’s reporting on Manipur, a state torn apart by ethnic violence since May 2023, has been recently recognised by the International Press Institute (IPI). The jury commended “...the media’s collective effort to bring out various facets of the human tragedy caused by the civil strife.” The IPI appreciation is well-deserved. I say this, not just as Readers’ Editor at ThePrint, but as a journalist and writer who has been dismayed by the indifference of most news media platforms—especially broadcast news—toward the civil unrest in the northeastern state. It is unconscionable. At least eight journalists from ThePrint have been to Manipur since the Meitei-Kuki conflict flared up in May 2023. That’s a lot of journalists for a small news website. The art of visual storytelling is a recent introduction. Over the past few months, ThePrint has been using the Shorthand platform to build stories with multi-media tools. Just go through the Wayanad story: you see the rain, the water cascading down the hills to the inhabited area. Or, see the gold being smuggled into India. At the tap of the finger, you discover how the yellow metal makes its way in baby diapers or as gold dust in sanitary pads. You can track its journey from country to country before arriving in India with colour coding. It’s wow. “We are leveraging visuals for storytelling...it has moving graphics, videos, sound – normally text and photograph stories are static. Viewers respond to this format,” said Nisheeth Upadhyay, Editor (Operations). “We will try to do this for more and more ground reporting.” Exciting times ahead—welcome to 2025 at ThePrint. Many other news organisations, across the world, use Shorthand such as BBC , Financial Times , and NBC . This report from a Spanish website shows you how you can tell a visualised story – and we can understand it without knowing the language. The format is ideally suited to ThePrint’s in-depth reporting. “We don’t do superficial journalism,” said Soham Sen, who led the graphics team. “We want to give it the treatment and presentation it deserves. This shows you things you don’t otherwise get to see.” Nisheeth Upadhyay said it lends “flexibility” to telling stories. Personally, I found the format to be a revelation – the visualisation makes it easier for the readers to absorb the information. Also, it directs your attention to specific aspects, one by one. The photographs in the ground report on dancing women jump out at you and tell you so much about the women’s lives. In the investigation into spam calls , the diagrams allow you to see the modus operandi . Senior Associate Editor, Ananya Bhardwaj’s ‘I witness’ report on her travels through Dhaka is tracked in maps and photographs. Praveen Jain, Editor (Photography), is “very excited” by the possibilities of the format. “I like it, the style of presentation is very good—and it surprises the reader,” he said. Obviously, this process of creating and presenting a story takes time and cannot be used for all stories. “You don’t use it for a regular news report,” said Upadhyay, “We have begun thinking Shorthand, now it will pick up.” Also read: In Manipur, Army seizes Starlink device made by Elon Musk’s SpaceX Manipur has fallen off the map of mainstream news media. It is remembered only when there are violent protests or incidents. Watch television news channels or YouTube news channels and you will note the absence of the state from their content. It’s as if Manipur doesn’t exist. In the words of Moushumi Das Gupta, Deputy Editor, who reported from the state several times for ThePrint, “Manipur is forgotten”. In June 2023, I wrote a Readers’ Editor column about ThePrint’s efforts to convey the enormity of the events that divided the state and their impact on its people. Karishma Hasnat, Special Correspondent in Guwahati, had warned of tensions in Manipur from early 2023. Even before the violence began, Hasnat noted the increasing uneasiness between the communities and how government actions had aggravated the situation. Besides Hasnat, ThePrint has sent reporters and photojournalists to Manipur from Delhi. In the last 18 months, we have continued to track events there. Have things changed on the ground for reporters? Moushumi Das Gupta had visited in November 2024, soon after the homes of MPs and MLAs were attacked. She went to Manipur in May 2023 soon after the first clashes broke out there. “It’s been a challenging assignment, throughout. Now, it’s more complicated because people don’t want to speak. They’re cagey.” She found the divide between the communities had grown and there was “a hopelessness” among the people. Frustration has increased and they’re not as welcoming of the news media. “They see it as conflict tourism,” explained Gupta. Here are some of her reports on the current situation in the state— BJP is a divided house , trade hub turns ghost town , Sangh workers live in fear . Another ThePrint editor who has been to Manipur several times, Ananya Bhardwaj, said that while sources are more accessible because she now knows the civil and security officials, what’s difficult is that different agencies tell different versions of the same incident. “They’re not on the same page,” said Bhardwaj. “So which agency are you to believe?” The other obstacle reporters face is misinformation, especially through social media. Both sides, the Meiteis and Kukis, have their own sources of information, which they use to promote their version of events. Bhardwaj said they show you videos from their own “intelligence sources”. She agreed with Gupta that the people are disillusioned: “They have accepted the fact that it will be like this,” she said. Had the national media kept Manipur in the headlines in the last 18 months, perhaps the authorities would have worked harder to find a settlement and restore peace. I believe the news media has by and large failed to highlight the faultlines in Manipur and demand accountability. That’s what makes ThePrint’s efforts all the more important. That’s it for this year. Before I leave you, a big thank-you to all our readers—especially to those who took the trouble to write to The Print with their valuable feedback. We hope you will continue to engage with us in 2025. Shailaja Bajpai is ThePrint’s Readers’ Editor. [+] Concept What would you do if you discovered your email or bank account had been hacked today, right this minute? It is a terrifying thought but one that is becoming increasingly common. Home users are prime targets because they often lack the robust security measures found in businesses. Hackers exploit the fact that individuals are more likely to use weak passwords, reuse them across multiple accounts, and fall for phishing scams. Additionally, home networks are typically less secure, making them an easier entry point for attackers. Typical hacker attacks often begin with deceptive instant messages or emails designed to steal your login credentials or install malicious software. However, these attacks often unfold in ways you least expect. For example, even if you avoid clicking on suspicious links, images embedded in emails can also carry malicious code. Attackers may use urgent language to manipulate you into calling a fake phone number they control, or they might call you directly, impersonating officials from trusted organizations. Even non-clickable website URLs can be dangerous. Hackers may use encoded or subtly altered web addresses that, when copied and pasted, redirect you to a phishing site. Unexpected scenarios include: The good news? You can prepare. In this guide, I will break down the steps you can take to secure your digital life and stay one step ahead of the hackers. Meta Announces Quarterly Cash DividendActor and singer-songwriter Joshua Bassett talks his new album The Golden Years, life in the public eye and why he won’t be sampling Guinness upon his arrival in Ireland next month. It all started with a muse. As well as being an Emmy-winning actor, best known for his role in, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, the multitalented Joshua Bassett is a more than capable songwriter. He recalls how an age-old motivation first led him to discover his craft. ‘I actually went to ask this girl to a homecoming formal, and she had turned down three other guys,’ he says, calling from his native California. ‘I wrote her a song to ask her myself and she said yes. I remember driving home and thinking, “That wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be. I should just write music!”‘ What started out as a gesture of teenage romance has since evolved into a fully-fledged career. Bassett signed to Warner in 2019, before releasing a string of singles and his self-titled debut EP. Last July saw the arrival of his first full-length The Golden Years, a record that captures the highs and lows of the last four years of the artist’s life. ‘I think everyone looks at the past with a bit of nostalgia, through those rose-coloured glasses,’ Bassett reflects. ‘Things weren’t perfect, but they were simpler. But I do still think the golden years are ahead of me, so I’m not at all believing that I’ve peaked.’ The result is a mature, well-crafted pop record, offering an intimate look into the 23-year-old’s late teens and early 20s. Bassett reveals how many of the tracks on the album were born from his spontaneous songwriting process, with most of them being ‘vomited out’ while in the studio. ‘That’s where the magic happens. I can’t explain it. It’s very elusive and unpredictable,’ he says. This approach birthed one of the album’s most personal tunes: ‘Mirror,’ a track which delves into themes of identity and scathing self-reflection. ‘We were trying to write a club banger that day, we had this crazy beat but not a single word was coming out,’ Bassett says. ‘I went outside to take a breather. I came back and sat down at the piano and was feeling a certain way. Not recognising the person you see in the mirror is a pretty common thing. Whether that’s through life hitting you hard, and it really affects you, or not recognising yourself anymore because you’re so depressed. ‘Dealing with self-hatred is an interesting one because I’ve been with me my whole life. I know the things I’m not proud of or and also how far I’ve gotten from where I’ve been. Whether it’s through addiction, depression or different things that have happened in life it’s easy to fall far from who you were.’ Self-examination has been a constant in Bassett’s journey, having been grappling with the pressures of fame since he was a teenager. ‘We live in an industry and society where your identity is based on how you look, and very little on who you are. I’ve learned to get under the hood and work through the things I need to work through. My identity is not in the opinions of others.’ More recently, Bassett’s outlook has been shaped in by his faith, which he describes as his anchor during difficult times. ‘The only thing that has gotten me through the last couple of years has been my faith,’ he says. ‘I’ve always been a spiritual guy, but it’s been quite a winding road for me. And I’m always trying to seek the truth. I’m always trying to learn more and more and find out the deeper spiritual truths.’ Nonetheless, life in the public eye hasn’t been easy. Bassett’s faith, as well as his personal life—including aspects of his sexuality and romantic relationships —have been subjects of debate, an invasive level of attention exacerbated in the world of social media. ‘It’s a wild thing being in the public eye because you’re getting the full spectrum,’ he continues. ‘People can adore you, and the very next day, they can hate you. And then the very next day, they can adore you again. You have to reject both sides and find a healthy middle. I definitely dealt with a lot of issues specifically because as an actor and an artist, I am the product. It’s hard not to put your identity in your performance. The work is me.’ Beyond the realms of music and acting, Bassett has channelled his energy into philanthropy. As well as his work with Teen Line and the Sunrise Movement, charities dedicated to mental health and the environment respectively, he founded Sammy Sundays – an initiative dedicated to supporting homeless individuals, offering them food and some much-needed company once a week. ‘When you look at suicide rates, specifically in men, there’s a direct correlation there with feeling invisible and feeling alone and feeling isolated,’ he observes. ‘The number one killer, the number one thing we hear is the problem on the streets is not being hungry, it’s being isolated, ignored and alone. So I hope that we can start to have more real conversations and that it will be safe to have more conversations.’ Dialogue, of any sort, seems harder than it should be amidst the backdrop of a tumultuous political climate in the U.S. ‘I’m working right now on having compassion for people whose viewpoints I can’t wrap my head around,’ Bassett shares. ‘There’s something that led them to believe what they believe. It’s not that I’m naive and think everyone’s got the best intentions and they’re just misunderstood. I’m not saying that at all, but I think the only way that we’re going to be able to make change is to hear each other and to love each other. ‘I’ll bring it back to Sammy Sundays because it’s a good reference point. We will be serving people and some people will walk by and be like, “Do you really think that this is going to help them? They need to get a job and you’re just encouraging their homelessness.” ‘They’re not staying homeless because they’re going to get a sandwich every Sunday. Us loving them, helping them know they’re seen, helping them feel part of a community, that’s what’s going to help them to get back on their feet. There’s obviously not a direct correlation to politics, but I do think the rule applies.’ Looking forward, Bassett is set to bring The Golden Years on the road, stopping by at Dublin’s 3Olympia on January 13. A video he uploaded to social media promoting the tour saw him and a pal, funnily enough, enjoying a pint of Guinness. It’s unlikely, he reveals, that he’ll be enjoying a jar of the lauded black stuff when he arrives on these shores though, with the singer staunchly committed to a monastic lifestyle while on tour. ‘I have a no drinking rule when I’m on tour, but I just might have to break it in Ireland,’ he laughs. ‘I have no sugar and no alcohol- I’m pretty locked in. I have to work out every day, it’s too much of a responsibility. I get that some people can have a drink and be fine, and more power to them, but I like to be sharp and on my game to give people the best possible show.’ Joshua Bassett comes to Dublin’s 3Olympia on January 13, 2025. US authorities on Tuesday charged the man suspected of gunning down a health insurance CEO in New York earlier this month with murder, including a charge of second-degree murder "as an act of terrorism." Mangione, 26, is accused of shooting UnitedHealthcare chief executive Brian Thompson on a Manhattan street on December 4, triggering a nationwide manhunt that ended last week when he was spotted at a Pennsylvania McDonald's. The former data engineer remains jailed in that state as he fights efforts to extradite him to New York to face charges there over the killing, which brought into focus widespread public anger against the US health care system. Mangione "is charged with one count of murder in the first degree and two counts of murder in the second degree, including one count of murder in the second degree as an act of terrorism," said Manhattan district attorney Alvin Bragg. Bragg said the terrorism charge was included because the shooting met the prerequisites for such a determination under New York law. "In its most basic terms, this was a killing that was intended to evoke terror and we've seen that reaction," he said. "This was not an ordinary killing." The maximum penalty for the murder charges Mangione faces is life in prison without parole, Bragg said. The suspect was also charged with several crimes related to his possession of a weapon, which authorities said was a 3D-printed "ghost gun." "We allege he... took out a nine-millimeter 3D-printed ghost gun equipped with a 3D-printed suppressor and shot (Thompson) once in the back and once in the leg," said Bragg. "These weapons are increasingly proliferating throughout New York City and the entire country. Evolving technology will only make this problem worse," he said. "Last year, over 80 ghost guns and ghost gun parts were recovered in Manhattan alone." In the wake of Thompson's killing, many social media users have lionized Mangione, with some even calling for further killings of other CEOs. Jessica Tisch, the New York City police commissioner, criticized members of the public who had praised the murder. "In the nearly two weeks since Mr Thompson's killing, we have seen a shocking and appalling celebration of cold-blooded murder," said Tisch. Mangione is due in Pennsylvania court on Thursday for a hearing on his extradition to New York. Police say a "life-changing, life-altering" back injury may have motivated Mangione, although they added that there was "no indication" that he was ever a client of UnitedHealthcare. When he was arrested, Mangione had a three-page handwritten text criticizing the US health care system. Police have said that Mangione's fingerprints matched those found near the crime scene, and that shell casings match the gun found on him when he was arrested. Bragg said that the suspect traveled to New York on November 24 with the intention of murdering Thompson. On December 4, he is alleged to have waited "for nearly an hour" outside the hotel where Thompson was shot early that morning. "This was a frightening, well planned, targeted murder that was intended to cause shock and attention and intimidation," said district attorney Bragg. bur-aha/md
The UK’s first driverless bus service, originally heralded as a breakthrough of global significance, is being withdrawn from service because too few passengers used it. The autonomous buses, operated by Stagecoach, have been running between Fife and Edinburgh along a 14-mile route over the Forth road bridge since May 2023 to relieve the heavy congestion which can bring traffic to a standstill. The service, a collaboration between Fusion Processing, the coach-building company Alexander Dennis, Napier University in Edinburgh and the Bristol Robotics Lab – a joint venture between the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England – was touted as the most ambitious and complex in the world. Built at an estimated cost of more than £6m, partly funded by the UK government, the fleet of five single-decker buses had the capacity to carry 10,000 passengers a week but needed two crew on board for safety reasons. In a brief statement, Stagecoach said that actual passenger numbers “did not reach expectations” and suggested this was a delay to the technology’s rollout rather than a setback. The route is one of Scotland’s busiest commuter journeys, with about 80,000 vehicles a day using the Queensferry crossing, the recently built bridge sitting alongside the 60-year-old bridge used in the pilot project. The Scottish government has set a target to cut car usage by 20% by 2030 but the latest data shows that is a long way from being achieved. The campaign group forecasts cars will travel more than 40bn km a year by 2030, up from 34bn km last year, with a record 3.1m vehicles of all types registered in Scotland in 2022. Bus usage has grown, however, driven in part by free bus passes for all under-22s and over-60s, though it is still far below pre-pandemic levels. on buses, linked to free bus travel for young people. In a statement from Stagecoach, the consortium said: “We are proud to have achieved a world first with our CAVForth autonomous bus service, demonstrating the potential for self-driving technology on a real-world registered timetable in East Scotland. “Although passenger adoption did not meet expectations, the trial has significantly advanced the understanding of the operational and regulatory requirements for autonomous services, delivering what was expected from this demonstrator project. “The partners remain committed to exploring new opportunities for self-driving technology in other areas across the UK, ensuring that this exciting innovation can play a transformative role in future transport networks.”Costco Wholesale Corporation Reports November Sales Results

The EU has intensified its focus on foreign subsidies through the Basic Anti-Subsidy Regulation and Foreign Subsidies Regulation (FSR). The Basic Anti-Subsidy Regulation targets subsidies from non-EU countries that distort competition in the EU market. The FSR expands the EU’s ability to address foreign subsidies affecting mergers, acquisitions, public procurement, and other commercial activities within the EU market. To prepare for potential investigations, companies should understand regulatory frameworks and consider implementing strategic measures. As the European Union increases its regulatory focus on foreign subsidies, businesses face a complex and evolving compliance landscape. This GT Alert specifically addresses the EU’s investigative actions under two key frameworks: the Basic Anti-Subsidy Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2016/1037) and the Foreign Subsidies Regulation (FSR)(Regulation (EU) 2022/2560) and highlights notable cases, such as the investigation into Chinese-built battery electric vehicles (BEVs) under the Basic Anti-Subsidy Regulation, which led to definitive countervailing duties, as well as inquiries into Chinese wind turbine suppliers and security technology company Nuctech under the FSR. The alert does not explore broader regulatory measures but instead focuses on the investigative processes and general strategies businesses can consider to prepare for potential EU investigations. Whether operating in the EU or entering the market, businesses should understand the differences and common themes in these cases should an investigation occur. Overview of the Basic Anti-Subsidy Regulation and FSR The Basic Anti-Subsidy Regulation and the FSR are two key legislative tools in the EU’s trade defense and competition policy toolkit. Both regulations aim to address competitive distortions that foreign subsidies from non-European countries cause to the EU internal market. The EU employs these instruments to maintain a level playing field for EU businesses and to ensure fair competition. The Basic Anti-Subsidy Regulation, in effect since 2018, empowers the European Commission (EC) to investigate such subsidies and impose countervailing duties (CVDs) on imports benefiting from them, along with other remedies. This regulation is designed to safeguard EU industries from unfair competition by neutralizing the advantage non-EU countries gain from foreign subsidies, often by raising the price of subsidized imports. While the regulation focuses on direct subsidies to specific industries or companies, it also covers other forms of financial contributions that confer a benefit, such as grants, loans, tax incentives, or the provision of goods and services below market value. It primarily relies on trade measures like CVDs to level the playing field and mitigate the unfair advantage such subsidies provide, while also allowing for other appropriate actions where necessary. The FSR, effective since 2023, expands the EU’s ability to address the distortive effects of foreign subsidies beyond the realm of traditional trade measures. It grants the EC powers to investigate foreign subsidies that may undermine competition in a wide range of scenarios, including mergers and acquisitions, public procurement processes, and other commercial activities within the EU market. M&A transactions and public procurement proceedings require ex-ante notifications only when specific thresholds are met. However, the EC can investigate every foreign subsidy during ex-officio proceedings regardless of any thresholds. This regulation is particularly relevant to the digital technology, green energy, telecommunications, transportation, and national security sectors, where fairness and competitiveness are critical to EU strategic interests. Unlike trade-focused instruments, the FSR offers flexibility by enabling the EC to deploy a variety of remedies tailored to specific situations. These measures include, among others, blocking mergers, imposing conditions on acquisitions, excluding subsidized companies from participating in public procurement tenders, and requiring companies to repay the subsidies in cases where they distort competition. In essence, the FSR builds on the Basic Anti-Subsidy Regulation’s foundation by broadening its scope to address emerging challenges in the global economy. It incorporates additional tools to manage foreign subsidies across various sectors, reflecting the EU’s evolving approach to market fairness. Comparing Investigations under the Basic Anti-Subsidy Regulation and FSR Investigations under the Basic Anti-Subsidy Regulation and the FSR aim to protect the EU market from foreign subsidies that distort competition. Each investigation underscores the EU’s commitment to maintaining a level playing field. Chinese-Built Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs): The investigation into Chinese-made BEVs falls under the Basic Anti-Subsidy Regulation due to concerns over foreign subsidies that may give Chinese manufacturers an unfair competitive advantage in the EU’s automotive market. This case primarily focuses on how subsidies may distort trade by lowering the price of imported vehicles, potentially harming EU producers and jobs. The investigation is data-driven, focuses on market assessments, trade-flow analysis, and competitive impact. Wind Turbine Manufacturers: The investigation into Chinese wind turbine manufacturers falls under the FSR and explores how foreign subsidies affect competition in the renewable energy sector. Unlike the BEV case, which centers on trade dynamics, this investigation adopts a broader, sector-wide approach, analyzing the impact of subsidies on the wind turbine market, including market trends and industry practices, rather than focusing solely on trade flows. Nuctech: The investigation into Nuctech, a Chinese company in the security technology sector, is an example of a case under the FSR driven by national security concerns. The EC inquiry involved a dawn raid at the company’s Dutch and Polish offices, aimed at gathering evidence of potential subsidies that could distort competition in the EU’s security sector. The FSR is appropriate for this investigation given its focus on addressing market distortions in sensitive sectors such as national security and critical infrastructure. While the investigations are all part of the EU’s broader efforts to address foreign subsidies, they differ in applicable regulations, underlying concerns, and methodologies: Applicable Regulations: The BEV inquiry falls under the Basic Anti-Subsidy Regulation, which focuses on foreign subsidies in the context of goods imports. Conversely, the wind turbine and Nuctech cases fall under the FSR, allowing the EU to assess whether foreign subsidies distort competition across various economic activities, from sector-specific impacts to security-related concerns. Nature of the Concerns: The BEV and wind turbine cases are primarily driven by concerns over economic fairness, aiming to ensure that subsidies in these sectors do not distort EU market competition. In contrast, the Nuctech investigation is driven by national security issues, given the sensitive nature of the security technology sector. Investigative Methods: Although both frameworks permit varied investigation methods, the nature of the concerns often dictates the approach. For example, the BEV and wind turbine investigations involved extensive data collection and market analysis, typical for economic-focused inquiries. The Nuctech investigation, however, involved a dawn raid—a tactic often reserved for cases involving urgent security or compliance concerns. Considerations for Companies Despite the differences in applicable regulations, specific concerns, and investigative methods, there are common strategies that businesses can consider to prepare for and respond to EU investigations. Businesses should consider taking proactive steps to navigate potential inquiries: Establish a Compliance Team: Form a dedicated team from legal, finance, and operations. Appoint a compliance officer to lead the team, ensuring regular monitoring and reporting of relevant information. This cohesive unit can address issues and coordinate responses to EC inquiries. Risk Assessment: Collect and process historical data on financial contributions across the whole capital group over the past three years and gather evidence to demonstrate that received subsidies could not distort the EU internal market (e.g., that the financial contributions were made on market terms). Engage Regulatory Consultants: Hire professionals well-versed in EU regulatory compliance. These may include lawyers with knowledge of legal frameworks, economists with experience in market analysis, and other consultants suited to your industry’s needs. Select consultants with proven experience in navigating EU regulations who can provide tailored advice to specific industries. Their insights can clarify the regulatory landscape and equip organizations to meet their obligations effectively. Implement Targeted Training: To reduce the risk of non-compliance, organize training sessions on EU foreign-subsidy regulations for both staff and senior management. Utilize external professionals or in-house resources to conduct workshops that incorporate case studies from past investigations and offer practical insights. Ensure that key decision-makers in senior management are involved, as their awareness is essential for cultivating a culture of compliance. Develop a Crisis Management Plan: Establish a plan detailing steps to take in the event of an investigation. Include communication strategies, designate spokespersons, and set protocols for interactions with regulatory authorities. A well-laid plan can help a company respond effectively and even mitigate risks before they escalate into formal investigations. Conclusion While EU investigations pose challenges, a proactive approach may help mitigate risks and enhance overall compliance. Staying informed and prepared is crucial for companies participating in the EU market. By understanding the regulatory landscape and implementing strategic measures, organizations can better navigate potential inquiries and safeguard their interests in an increasingly complex environment. * Special thanks to Qualified Chinese Legal Consultant Ran Chang for contributing to this GT Alert.East Carolina cornerback Shavon Revel Jr., a potential first-round pick, declared for the 2025 NFL Draft on Friday. Senegalese artisans in the spotlight as they exhibit for the first time at a prestigious art event DAKAR, Senegal (AP) — For the artistic and cultural elites of the West African nation of Senegal, the monthlong Dakar Biennale of Contemporary African Arts is a celebratory moment. But it wasn’t until this year that the local artisans in the Soumbedioune crafts market, just off the Corniche and at the doorstep on the Medina working-class neighborhood, realized what the Biennale was. Craftsmanship is deeply rooted in the country’s culture, but its role has declined in recent years. As living costs rise, many Senegalese opt for cheaper, Chinese-imported products.
