LOS ANGELES — Right when the Los Angeles Rams' offense has dropped into a disconcerting slump, their defense has held three straight opponents under 10 points for the first time in decades. Although the Rams (10-6) are closing in on an NFC West title and another playoff berth with a five-game winning streak, the way they're doing it makes their postseason prospects quite unpredictable. The methodology has been strange, but the results are not: After holding off Arizona 13-9 on Saturday night, Los Angeles has won nine of 11 and is very close to claiming its fourth division title and sixth playoff berth in coach Sean McVay's eight seasons. “I’m proud of this group and the way they battled back,” Matthew Stafford said. “A lot of people doubted us, and a lot of people wrote us off at 1-4. To be able to sit here with our record what it is right now, I feel proud of this group.” The Rams hadn't held three straight opponents to single-digit scoring since 1975, but rookie coordinator Chris Shula's defense has done it with a strong front and a little luck on the back end, including the last-minute interception by Ahkello Witherspoon on a pass that deflected off star Arizona tight end Trey McBride's head at the goal line. Kyler Murray threw it before McBride was probably ready because Shula had called a zero blitz on first down at the Los Angeles 5. “I want to make more plays to make sure they don’t have to do as much as they did (against Arizona), but I’m proud of them,” Stafford said of the Rams' defense. "It’s awesome to watch where they were in training camp to where they are now. Shula is doing a hell of a job. We all knew he would. Those guys are playing hard for him.” But the Rams have scored more than 21 points just once during their five-game winning streak, their longest since their Super Bowl championship season in 2021. Against the Cardinals in Inglewood's ideal weather, the Rams’ offense still produced one TD, a season-worst 12 first downs and only 257 total yards — 139 fewer than Arizona. The running game struggled again, as it often does when all five starting offensive linemen aren't healthy, while the entire roster aside from Puka Nacua combined for just seven receptions for 60 yards — a surprising number for a McVay offense. “I don’t think there’s one thing I can point to,” McVay said Sunday. “I could go on and on about some of the things, starting with me, but then also about our execution in terms of getting connected in the run game, targeting the right way, making sure that the ball is going where it should go, and guys that I know are capable of playing the way that we’ve seen. If they do that, then I know that it’s not as far as sometimes it can feel like. But ultimately, we’ve got to do it.” What's working The young front four remains the strength of the defense. Jared Verse had a tremendous game on the edge against Murray and Arizona's running game, while fellow rookie Braden Fiske and second-year pros Kobie Turner and Byron Young all recorded sacks. Kyren Williams got his second-fewest carries of the season (13, with just five in the second half), while rookie Blake Corum was barely involved. Los Angeles' 3.9 yards per rush is the second-lowest mark in the NFL even though Williams began Sunday third in the league with 1,299 yards. Stock up Witherspoon not only made the game-saving interception, but the eight-year veteran who went unsigned until September also has seized the starting cornerback job from Cobie Durant, who didn't play on defense against the Cards despite being healthy again. McVay said Witherspoon's play during Durant's brief injury absence resulted in the change. Stock down Cooper Kupp had one catch against Arizona, and he has just 12 receptions in the past five games, matching the least productive five-game stretch of his eight-year career. Stafford has said the Rams need to get their Super Bowl 56 MVP more involved, and Kupp says he's healthy — yet it isn't happening. But its cameras leave plenty of room for improvement, which for us, brings the experience down slightly. Still, the phone is a solid option in this category. Samsung Galaxy A55 5G The Galaxy A55 5G is sort of like a stripped down version of Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S line. While it doesn’t possess the same bells and whistles as its premium counterpart, it does look and feel more expensive than it is. It also has a nice display, decent performance, and a battery that can last a full day. But, again, you’re probably only choosing this if you want to flaunt a stylish-looking phone. P30,000 to P40,000 Xiaomi 14T Pro If there’s one phone that can give premium flagships a run for their money, it’s the Xiaomi 14T Pro . This beefy all-arounder has it all: stellar Leica-branded lenses, an excellent AMOLED display with a 144Hz dynamic refresh rate, a speedy Dimensity 9300+ SoC chipset, and ultra-fast charging. Moreover, it has a sleek build, highlighted by an aluminum alloy frame. Lest we forget, it also features a bunch of cool AI features, including Android’s Circle to Search and Gemini assistant. As with the other phones we’ve listed so far, it’s not perfect. The ultrawide lens, for example, doesn’t feature autofocus. The telephoto lens, meanwhile, doesn’t feature optical image stabilization. P40,000 to P50,000 Xiaomi 14 If you want a pocketable phone that doesn’t compromise on performance power, you can’t go wrong with the Xiaomi 14. This compact flagship impresses in every department. Its Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset can handle anything you throw at it; its Leica-branded camera system takes sharp photos with great color accuracy; and its 6.39-inch AMOLED display is bright and immersive. Is it a perfect phone? No. Xiaomi’s HyperOS is not as intuitive as other software. The upgrades here may also feel incremental if you already own last year’s Xiaomi 13. Broadcom Inc., a chip supplier for Apple Inc. and other big tech companies, surged to a $1 trillion market valuation for the first time after predicting a boom in demand for its artificial intelligence chips. The chipmaker also predicted that the addressable market for AI components that it designs for data center operators would reach as high as $90 billion by fiscal 2027. Like Nvidia Corp., Broadcom is positioning itself to be a major beneficiary of the AI spending frenzy. And Chief Executive Officer Hock Tan said his company had won two major new hyperscaler customers — the biggest operators of data centers. The stock rose 24% to $224.80 in New York on Friday, its biggest one-day rally since August 2009 — the month when precursor company Avago Technologies Ltd. held its initial public offering. That business merged with Broadcom Corp. in 2016 to form the current company. Investors have piled into Broadcom’s stock this year, lured by AI optimism. The Palo Alto, California-based company had predicted that it would get more than $10 billion in annual revenue from that market, outpacing other parts of its business. Ultimately, the number reached $12.2 billion in the last fiscal year. AI revenue grew 220% during the year, fuelled by demand for processors and networking components, Tan said. Demand for non-AI chips, meanwhile, will be down in the first quarter. Total sales will be $14.6 billion in the period, which runs through January, in line with estimates. Tan has assembled one of the most valuable companies in the chip industry through a string of acquisitions. He also has built a software unit that’s approaching the scale of its semiconductor operations. That reach makes the company’s forecasts a bellwether for demand over a broad swath of the technology industry. Profit was $1.42 a share in the fourth quarter, excluding some items, the company said. Revenue rose to nearly $14.1 billion in the period, which ended Nov. 3. Data center providers rely on Broadcom’s custom-chip design and networking semiconductors to build their AI systems. The company also sells components for cars, smartphones and internet access gear. Broadcom’s semiconductor division had revenue of $8.23 billion billion in the fourth quarter, up 12%. Software sales grew nearly 200% to $5.82 billion. The company is much larger than it was a year ago, partly because of its acquisition of VMware Inc., which it bought for roughly $69 billion. Prior to the report, analysts raised concerns that Broadcom’s chip design business was suffering from weaker demand. They cited the slower introduction of a new version of a Broadcom processor for Alphabet Inc. Apple is a top customer of Broadcom, which provides components for the iPhone. During earnings calls, Tan typically gives updates on Broadcom’s often-contentious relationship with that company, which he refers to as his “large North American customer” or another vague term. Bloomberg News reported earlier that Apple would start switching away from a key Broadcom wireless chip starting next year.
