LOS ANGELES — Right when the Los Angeles Rams' offense has dropped into a disconcerting slump, their defense has held three straight opponents under 10 points for the first time in decades. Although the Rams (10-6) are closing in on an NFC West title and another playoff berth with a five-game winning streak, the way they're doing it makes their postseason prospects quite unpredictable. The methodology has been strange, but the results are not: After holding off Arizona 13-9 on Saturday night, Los Angeles has won nine of 11 and is very close to claiming its fourth division title and sixth playoff berth in coach Sean McVay's eight seasons. “I’m proud of this group and the way they battled back,” Matthew Stafford said. “A lot of people doubted us, and a lot of people wrote us off at 1-4. To be able to sit here with our record what it is right now, I feel proud of this group.” The Rams hadn't held three straight opponents to single-digit scoring since 1975, but rookie coordinator Chris Shula's defense has done it with a strong front and a little luck on the back end, including the last-minute interception by Ahkello Witherspoon on a pass that deflected off star Arizona tight end Trey McBride's head at the goal line. Kyler Murray threw it before McBride was probably ready because Shula had called a zero blitz on first down at the Los Angeles 5. “I want to make more plays to make sure they don’t have to do as much as they did (against Arizona), but I’m proud of them,” Stafford said of the Rams' defense. "It’s awesome to watch where they were in training camp to where they are now. Shula is doing a hell of a job. We all knew he would. Those guys are playing hard for him.” But the Rams have scored more than 21 points just once during their five-game winning streak, their longest since their Super Bowl championship season in 2021. Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford (9) throws under pressure from Arizona Cardinals linebacker Zaven Collins (25) during the first half of an NFL football game Saturday, Dec. 28, 2024, in Inglewood, Calif. Credit: AP/Alex Gallardo They’ve managed only three touchdowns in their last three games while scoring fewer than 20 points each time out, although that stretch includes games played in the rain (San Francisco) and in subfreezing temperatures (New York Jets). Against the Cardinals in Inglewood's ideal weather, the Rams’ offense still produced one TD, a season-worst 12 first downs and only 257 total yards — 139 fewer than Arizona. The running game struggled again, as it often does when all five starting offensive linemen aren't healthy, while the entire roster aside from Puka Nacua combined for just seven receptions for 60 yards — a surprising number for a McVay offense. “I don’t think there’s one thing I can point to,” McVay said Sunday. “I could go on and on about some of the things, starting with me, but then also about our execution in terms of getting connected in the run game, targeting the right way, making sure that the ball is going where it should go, and guys that I know are capable of playing the way that we’ve seen. If they do that, then I know that it’s not as far as sometimes it can feel like. But ultimately, we’ve got to do it.” What's working The young front four remains the strength of the defense. Jared Verse had a tremendous game on the edge against Murray and Arizona's running game, while fellow rookie Braden Fiske and second-year pros Kobie Turner and Byron Young all recorded sacks. Los Angeles Rams safety Kamren Kinchens, left, intercepts a pass intended for Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride, left, during the second half of an NFL football game Saturday, Dec. 28, 2024, in Inglewood, Calif. Credit: AP/Alex Gallardo What needs help The Rams again failed to establish the running game despite never trailing Arizona. Kyren Williams got his second-fewest carries of the season (13, with just five in the second half), while rookie Blake Corum was barely involved. Los Angeles' 3.9 yards per rush is the second-lowest mark in the NFL even though Williams began Sunday third in the league with 1,299 yards. Stock up Witherspoon not only made the game-saving interception, but the eight-year veteran who went unsigned until September also has seized the starting cornerback job from Cobie Durant, who didn't play on defense against the Cards despite being healthy again. McVay said Witherspoon's play during Durant's brief injury absence resulted in the change. Stock down Cooper Kupp had one catch against Arizona, and he has just 12 receptions in the past five games, matching the least productive five-game stretch of his eight-year career. Stafford has said the Rams need to get their Super Bowl 56 MVP more involved, and Kupp says he's healthy — yet it isn't happening. Injuries McVay believes the Rams stayed healthy outside of a stinger for rookie safety Kam Kinchens, but they felt the absence of RT Rob Havenstein, who injured his shoulder last week during an unpadded practice. Backup Joe Noteboom committed three holding penalties and got beaten repeatedly. Key number 4 — Stafford's consecutive games without taking a sack. That's the longest streak of his 16-year career, yet he has only one 200-yard passing game in that stretch. Next steps The Rams began Sunday preparing as if they'll play the Seahawks (9-7) next Saturday, although the game could happen a day later. McVay won't show his cards, but if the Rams have clinched, they seem likely to rest several regulars for the playoffs.

We’re just a few weeks away from saying goodbye to 2024, and what a busy year it has been in the world of phones. The hottest trend has been AI, with almost every other release this year packing features that relied or revolved around the emerging tech. AI became so popular that manufacturers like Samsung and Google started branding their phones as “AI phones”. Even Apple couldn’t help itself and jumped on the AI bandwagon. So expect to hear a lot about AI throughout the rest of 2024 and into 2025. In the meantime, as part of our year-end tradition, we’re rounding up a list of the best phones that you can buy in 2024. We’re separating our picks based on price range to make it easier for you to find a phone that fits your budget. Without further ado, here’s our list: Under P10,000 Xiaomi Redmi 13 4G The best budget phones give you tremendous value for your money, delivering on all the bare essentials and then some. While they don’t have the same bells and whistles as their flagship counterparts, they’re sure to make every centavo you spend well worth it. When it comes to value, Redmi phones are hard to beat. This year, the Redmi 13 is what caught our eye in the sub-P10,000 category, packing a fairly large 6.7-inch LCD display, a stunning 108-megapixel primary lens, and a sizable 5,030mAh battery cell. The octa-core MediaTek Helio G91 Ultra can be better performance-wise, but it gets the job done for everyday tasks like browsing and watching videos. Being a budget phone, however, the Redmi 13 does cut a few corners. One, it doesn’t support 5G connectivity. Two, video recording is capped at 1080p at 30fps. Three, battery life can be better. But these are minor tradeoffs when you consider the package as a whole and the accessible P7,999 price tag. Alternatives: Realme C65 The Realme C65 shares a few similarities with the Redmi 13 4G; most notable of which is the 6.7-inch display. It’s P2,000 more expensive at P9,999 , but that extra cost gets you stereo speakers and a better performing battery. Oppo A3 If durability is what you’re after, go with the Oppo A3, which supposedly boasts military-grade shock resistance. It also has some decent specs for this category, including a 6.67-inch display and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 6s Gen 1 chipset. Like the two other phones before it, the A3 also cuts a few corners, but, priced at P8,999 , it does deliver on the value front P10,000-P15,000 Infinix Note 40 Pro+ 5G If one were to push a phone in this price range to its very limits in terms of hardware, they’d probably get something like the Infinix Note 40 Pro+ 5G. This is an impressive bang-for-your-buck release that delivers where it counts. It has a 6.78-inch AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate, a MediaTek Dimensity 7020 chipset, a 108MP main lens, 5G connectivity, and support for up to 100W wired charging. On top of all that, the phone’s rear is covered in a faux-leather material that feels just as elegant as it looks. Perhaps the biggest thing holding it back is it doesn’t have an ultra-wide lens. Despite that though, the Note 40 Pro+ 5G is still a huge steal at P13,999 . Alternatives: Honor X8b You can count on Honor to bring its expertise in phone cameras in just about every price category. The Honor X8b, priced at P12,999 benefits from this, with its 108MP main lens delivering relatively sharp and detailed photos with decent dynamic range. It also has a whopping 512GB of storage, which is a huge win in our book. Poco X6 5G If an all-around phone is what you’re after, the Poco X6 5G is one of your best options in this price category. This budget-friendly release has a 6.67-inch AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate, a Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 chipset with at least 8GB of RAM, a triple-rear camera setup with a 64MP main lens, 5G connectivity, and 5,100mAh battery with 67W fast charging. It’s just slightly more expensive than the previous two entries in this category at P14,999 . P15,000-P20,000 Redmi Note 13 Pro 5G As far as value for money goes, Xiaomi’s Redmi line is almost unrivaled. This year’s Redmi Note 13 Pro 5G is one of the best examples of that, boasting a whopping 200MP main camera that takes photos with plenty of detail. What’s more, it has a bright 6.7-inch AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate and a highly capable Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 with 5G connectivity support. With a starting price of P16,999 , it’s one of, if not the best, option for a budget mid-range available today. Alternatives: Poco X6 Pro The Poco X6 Pro delivers kind of the same experience as the Redmi Note 13 Pro 5G, sharing almost identical specs and performance numbers. The two are also priced the same at P16,999 . The key difference is the main lens: the former has a 64MP lens, while the latter has a 200MP lens. Oppo Reno12 F 5G If raw performance power isn’t so important to you, you can opt for the Oppo Reno12 F 5G, the most affordable variant of its popular photography-focused Reno12 series. This mid-range release features a fairly attractive design and noteworthy camera capabilities with some nifty AI photography tools. It’s just a tad bit more expensive than the previous two entries in this category at P18,999 . P20,000 to P30,000 Honor 200 Pro Want a taste of a premium flagship experience without breaking the bank? Look no further than the Honor 200 Pro. This sub-P30,000 powerhouse ticks all the boxes, packing a bright 6.78-inch AMOLED display, a speedy Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chipset, and a 5,200mAh battery that supports up to 100W wired charging. In case those specs weren’t impressive enough, the triple-rear camera setup here is arguably the best in this category. You also get Honor’s AI Portrait Engine, which can enhance photos of people to great effect. The only reason we could think of to avoid the Honor 200 Pro is if you don’t like curved displays. Because with its price tag of P29,999, it’s the closest you can possibly get to a flagship experience in this category. Alternatives: Poco F6 Pro In some areas, the Poco F6 Pro is arguably better than the Honor 200 Pro. It has an elegant design, a great 6.67-inch AMOLED display, a resilient battery, and Wi-Fi 7 support. In addition to all that, the F6 Pro is also cheaper than the 200 Pro by P3,000, with it starting at P26,999. But its cameras leave plenty of room for improvement, which for us, brings the experience down slightly. Still, the phone is a solid option in this category. Samsung Galaxy A55 5G The Galaxy A55 5G is sort of like a stripped down version of Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S line. While it doesn’t possess the same bells and whistles as its premium counterpart, it does look and feel more expensive than it is. It also has a nice display, decent performance, and a battery that can last a full day. But, again, you’re probably only choosing this if you want to flaunt a stylish-looking phone. P30,000 to P40,000 Xiaomi 14T Pro If there’s one phone that can give premium flagships a run for their money, it’s the Xiaomi 14T Pro . This beefy all-arounder has it all: stellar Leica-branded lenses, an excellent AMOLED display with a 144Hz dynamic refresh rate, a speedy Dimensity 9300+ SoC chipset, and ultra-fast charging. Moreover, it has a sleek build, highlighted by an aluminum alloy frame. Lest we forget, it also features a bunch of cool AI features, including Android’s Circle to Search and Gemini assistant. As with the other phones we’ve listed so far, it’s not perfect. The ultrawide lens, for example, doesn’t feature autofocus. The telephoto lens, meanwhile, doesn’t feature optical image stabilization. Overall, however, these are minor compromises to what is a strong contender for the best bang-for-your-buck phone of the year. The Xiaomi 14T Pro starts at P37,999 . Alternatives: Realme GT 6 If the 14T Pro is out of your budget, the Realme GT 6 is your next best choice, with it starting at P34,999 . It has a 6.78-inch, Dolby Vision-supported OLED display that can reach up to a whopping 6,000 nits of brightness, a flagship-grade Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chipset, great cameras, and a long-lasting battery, among others. The only reason this phone is not in the 14T Pro’s place in our list is because: one, its hefty weight makes it unwieldy; and two, its ultrawide cameras fall somewhat flat. (READ: Realme jumps on the AI train with the GT 6 and GT 6T ) Samsung Galaxy S24 FE Alternatively, you can also check out the Samsung Galaxy S24 FE , a budget variant of the flagship Galaxy S24 series. This phone delivers some of the same features and software experiences as its more expensive counterparts, including AI, for a fraction of the cost. It also has a beautiful display and good performance for the price. If you want a budget-friendly entry point to the Galaxy system or want to stay in it without forking upwards of P50,000, the S24 FE, priced at P39,990 , should be a no-brainer. P40,000 to P50,000 Xiaomi 14 If you want a pocketable phone that doesn’t compromise on performance power, you can’t go wrong with the Xiaomi 14. This compact flagship impresses in every department. Its Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset can handle anything you throw at it; its Leica-branded camera system takes sharp photos with great color accuracy; and its 6.39-inch AMOLED display is bright and immersive. Is it a perfect phone? No. Xiaomi’s HyperOS is not as intuitive as other software. The upgrades here may also feel incremental if you already own last year’s Xiaomi 13. Even with these complaints though, we still think the Xiaomi 14 is easily among the best phones to release this year. The Xiaomi 14 starts at P45,999. Alternative: OnePlus 12R Like the Xiaomi 14, the OnePlus 12R, which starts at P43,990 , ticks almost all the boxes. It delivers excellent performance, a bright and rich display, and a super long-lasting battery. However, you do have to level your expectations with the camera performance. Oh, it also doesn’t feature wireless charging. Above P50,000 Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra We’re venturing into the ultra-expensive, premium flagship territory now, and no one puts out premium flagships like Samsung does, except Apple. This year’s Galaxy S24 Ultra is the ultimate premium flagship, bringing together all the cutting-edge features you could ever dream of in one beautiful, high-end package. With the Ultra, you get a big and brilliant display, close to class-leading battery life, an incredibly versatile camera system, and an amazing software experience with plenty of AI functionalities and tools, among so many others. S Pen support also returns this year, letting you turn your phone into a mobile workstation. This phone essentially redefines what phones are capable of, with it being able to function like a laptop, a professional-grade camera, and a drawing tablet all at the same time. That’s why we think, if you’re spending upwards of P50,000 for a phone this year, this should be it. The Galaxy S24 Ultra starts at P84,990 . Must Read Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra review: A good year to upgrade Alternatives: iPhone 16 Pro Max If you prefer iOS over Android, you’re in luck because this year’s top-end iPhone, the iPhone 16 Pro Max , is, of course, just as capable as the Galaxy S24 Ultra. This new iPhone is the biggest yet and has the fastest chip in the market. Cameras additionally boast various improvements, making the already great camera setup that debuted on the iPhone 15 Pro Max even better. Apple Intelligence features have also started rolling out, so you too can join the AI hype train on an iPhone. We’d only ask you to avoid the iPhone 16 Pro Max if you got the iPhone 15 Pro Max last year. While this year’s upgrades are nice, we don’t think they’re substantial enough to warrant a purchase. After all, the iPhone 16 Pro Max, like the Galaxy S24 Ultra, is not cheap, with it also starting at P84,990 . (READ: ‘iPhones for everyone’: Apple’s premium device tops Home Credit’s phone sales in 2023 ) Honor Magic6 Pro We think Honor’s flagship, the Magic6 Pro , can also hang with heavyweights like the iPhone 16 Pro Max and the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. This cameraphone has some of the most advanced imaging technologies money can buy, which makes for an unparalleled mobile photography experience. On top of that, it has outstanding performance and an excellent Dolby Vision-supported display. If you’re after a premium flagship experience but can’t afford the Ultra and the Pro Max, the Honor Magic6 Pro, priced at P59,999 , is a good option. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 Foldables haven’t exactly taken over the world the way many industry analysts and pundits expected, but the tech behind them has steadily improved over the last years. That’s perhaps most evident in one of Samsung’s latest foldables, the Galaxy Z Fold6. This phone-tablet hybrid is arguably the best foldable in the market today, boasting blazing-fast performance, excellent cameras, brilliant displays, and, of course, a more durable design. It would probably top our recommendations list if only it wasn’t so expensive. (WATCH: What’s new with the Fold6 and Flip6 ) If you’re in the market for foldables, it’s this or the Honor Magic V2 (P80,000 at launch in February) this year, or the even newer Honor Magic V3 (P90,000 at launch in November), which are cheaper but does have a great build, and feel like regular phones when folded (unlike the long and tall Galaxy Fold). And if thinness is something you like, the Honor phones are currently the thinnest in the market for a book-style foldable. (READ: Honor Magic V2 review: The best part is how well this foldable mimics a regular phone ) The Galaxy Z Fold6 starts at P105,990 . Asus ROG Phone 9 Pro If you love to game on your phone and have the cash to spare, the Asus ROG Phone 9 Pro could be for you. This beast of a phone possesses all the hardware you could possibly need to optimize performance and graphical power in games. It also has exceptional battery life, outlasting other heavyweights in this category in various tests. For us, the only drawback is that it’ll likely come with a steep price tag once it launches locally. – Rappler.com Must Read What we like and don’t like about the iPhone 16: Camera control, staggered AI releaseThe year ahead will be an extremely challenging one for global financial markets for 10 reasons. We will deal with the first five this week. ? There will be a significant correction in US stocks because of severe bubbles, especially with the Shiller P/E ratio of the S&P 500 Index P/E having reached its third-highest level in history of 38.35 times. This is the sixth time that the S&P 500 P/E ratio has risen past the 30-times mark in the past 154 years. The other five times that it happened saw market retreats of between 20 and 89 percent for the S&P 500, Dow Jones Industrial Average and Nasdaq Composite Index. Therefore, a major adjustment of more than 20 percent would seem to be inevitable for the three major indexes. ? The US economy is on the brink of a recession, which shows the seriousness of the problem from the M2 money supply. As of October, M2 has fallen by up to 4.74 percent from its peak between April 2022 and October 2023. Since early 1870, there have been five instances of M2 declines of more than 2 percent during the same period last year: 1878, 1893, 1921, 1931 to 1933 and 2023 to 2024. The previous four times this happened, the US economy would have fallen into a recession or depression. In 2023, the US Federal Reserve was trying to push M2 through monetary policy. That policy may change next year with the rate-cuts pace expected to remain fierce, plus the public's savings rate is declining. These factors will mean the M2 will be under pressure to pull back. Hence, one has to be cautious as there is a possibility of a US recession after the second quarter. ? Despite that possibility, it does not mean the economy or stocks will fall into a long-term recession or decline. The United States has seen 12 recessions since the end of World War II. Nine were resolved in less than a year and the rest in no more than 18 months. In addition, since the Great Depression in September 1929, the S&P 500's upward cycle has been 3.5 times longer than its downward one. Even if US stocks have an adjustment of more than 20 percent, it will mean it's a good time for a low-priced entry. This is especially since US companies have plenty of cash and unique high-tech products, such as high-end artificial intelligence chips that have a market share of more than 80 percent. ? The problems in Europe are more difficult to solve than the US ones. Its chaotic welfare, refugee and other policies over the past 10 years have put several countries in serious financial trouble. The eurozone's GDP in the third quarter only grew 0.4 percent and Germany and France are on the brink of negative growth. Upcoming US tariffs and other policies may affect its economic performance after Donald Trump takes office next year. Coupled with the inevitable increase in NATO's spending, Europe's economy and finances will be in a tight spot. It is believed the euro will fall to parity against the dollar. The UK economy and finances are also no better than Germany and France's, so the pound will fall to 1.2 against the dollar. ? Japan may be one of the few countries that can be optimistic. A weak yen, the absence of asset bubbles and wage reforms have brought huge inflows and seen domestic demand recover. However, the key concern is the shaky position of Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. Questions hang over whether he knows how to bring together a stable and governable coalition and his foreign-affair nous. Trump will be a big test for Ishiba. This not only limits the uptrend of the Japanese stock market but also limits room for a yen recovery. The Nikkei is expected to top out at only 44,000 points next year. The dollar against the yen could also be expected to hold at a level of 140, which would also limit the room for a significant rise in the yen. In just a few years, Nvidia ( NVDA -3.22% ) has accomplished a lot. The company went from primarily serving the video-gaming market with its chips and generating less than $5 billion in annual revenue to a position as artificial intelligence (AI) chip leader. This dominance is helping Nvidia bring in more revenue in just one quarter than it used to generate in a whole year. Revenue climbed 94% to a record of more than $35 billion in the recent three-month period. On top of this, Nvidia has scored other wins, such as entering the Dow Jones Industrial Average this year and soaring past Apple to become the world's most valuable company at more than $3.5 trillion. Now, moving forward, what's next for Nvidia? My prediction is one catalyst will help this AI powerhouse do something that no other company has ever done. From video games to artificial intelligence Before talking about my prediction, though, let's consider Nvidia's path so far. As mentioned, Nvidia used to mainly serve the video-games market with its high-performance graphics processing units (GPUs). But the GPU's ability to process many tasks at once meant it could be very useful elsewhere too; Nvidia's creation of parallel computing platform, CUDA, helped this transition happen. And as the AI boom picked up, it was clear that Nvidia's GPUs would play a major role in this high-growth industry. Nvidia went all in on AI, not only tailoring its GPUs to the needs of this newish technology but also providing a vast array of related products and services. This helped the company take more than 80% share in the AI chip market and position itself for victory over time. Today, Nvidia is the "go to" source for any player aiming to develop an AI project. And Nvidia counts the world's biggest technology companies as its major customers -- from Meta Platforms to Microsoft . It's also important to note that Nvidia's products and services are available across all public clouds, making it easy for customers to get in on Nvidia's AI offerings. All of this has led to triple-digit revenue growth quarter after quarter for the company's data center business and margins surpassing 70%. So not only is Nvidia winning when it comes to revenue growth, it's also winning when it comes to profitability on sales. Nvidia's stock performance has reflected this success story, with shares soaring 2,600% over the past five years -- and this year, they're heading for nearly a 200% increase. Nvidia's market value is set to rise Now, let's consider my prediction. I say that one catalyst right around the corner will help Nvidia do something that no other company has ever done. And that's to make it to a $4 trillion market capitalization . What's the catalyst? The company's launch of its new Blackwell architecture and best-performing chip ever. Nvidia already has sent out 13,000 Blackwell GPU samples to customers. And Microsoft and Oracle recently posted on social media, showing their new Blackwell-powered racks. Nvidia aims to ramp production in this current quarter and even bring in billions of dollars in revenue from Blackwell during the period. On top of this, Nvidia has spoken of "insane" demand for Blackwell, with this demand exceeding supply. This should drive growth for the company and please investors, so it could progressively push the stock higher. To get to a $4 trillion market cap, Nvidia's shares would have to rise about 13% to $165 from the price of about $146 as of the Nov. 21 market close. That's a clear possibility, considering the company's valuation today and growth prospects. Trading at 50 times forward earnings estimates , Nvidia isn't cheap, but it's reasonably priced for a high-growth player, allowing for room to run. Nvidia forecasts fourth-quarter revenue growth of about 70%. And analysts expect annual earnings-per-share growth of 35% over the coming five years. So, high demand for Blackwell -- a potentially game-changing platform -- along with Nvidia's valuation today make it possible for this company to do something no other company has done: reach $4 trillion in value. And whether this happens right away or at some point down the line, Nvidia, thanks to its leadership, commitment to innovation, and growth prospects, makes a top long-term AI buy.

Broadcom Inc., a chip supplier for Apple Inc. and other big tech companies, surged to a $1 trillion market valuation for the first time after predicting a boom in demand for its artificial intelligence chips. Share Market View All Nifty Gainers View All Company Value Change %Change Sales of AI products will gain 65% in the fiscal first quarter, far faster than its overall semiconductor growth of about 10%, the company said during a post-earnings conference call. The chipmaker also predicted that the addressable market for AI components that it designs for data center operators would reach as high as $90 billion by fiscal 2027. Like Nvidia Corp., Broadcom is positioning itself to be a major beneficiary of the AI spending frenzy. And Chief Executive Officer Hock Tan said his company had won two major new hyperscaler customers — the biggest operators of data centers. The stock rose 24% to $224.80 in New York on Friday, its biggest one-day rally since August 2009 — the month when precursor company Avago Technologies Ltd. held its initial public offering. That business merged with Broadcom Corp. in 2016 to form the current company. Investors have piled into Broadcom’s stock this year, lured by AI optimism. The Palo Alto, California-based company had predicted that it would get more than $10 billion in annual revenue from that market, outpacing other parts of its business. Ultimately, the number reached $12.2 billion in the last fiscal year. AI revenue grew 220% during the year, fuelled by demand for processors and networking components, Tan said. Demand for non-AI chips, meanwhile, will be down in the first quarter. Total sales will be $14.6 billion in the period, which runs through January, in line with estimates. Tan has assembled one of the most valuable companies in the chip industry through a string of acquisitions. He also has built a software unit that’s approaching the scale of its semiconductor operations. That reach makes the company’s forecasts a bellwether for demand over a broad swath of the technology industry. Profit was $1.42 a share in the fourth quarter, excluding some items, the company said. Revenue rose to nearly $14.1 billion in the period, which ended Nov. 3. Analysts had estimated $1.39 a share in earnings and revenue of $14.1 billion on average, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Data center providers rely on Broadcom’s custom-chip design and networking semiconductors to build their AI systems. The company also sells components for cars, smartphones and internet access gear. Its push into software, meanwhile, includes products for mainframe computers, cybersecurity and data center optimization. Broadcom’s semiconductor division had revenue of $8.23 billion billion in the fourth quarter, up 12%. Software sales grew nearly 200% to $5.82 billion. The company is much larger than it was a year ago, partly because of its acquisition of VMware Inc., which it bought for roughly $69 billion. Prior to the report, analysts raised concerns that Broadcom’s chip design business was suffering from weaker demand. They cited the slower introduction of a new version of a Broadcom processor for Alphabet Inc. Apple is a top customer of Broadcom, which provides components for the iPhone. During earnings calls, Tan typically gives updates on Broadcom’s often-contentious relationship with that company, which he refers to as his “large North American customer” or another vague term. Bloomberg News reported earlier that Apple would start switching away from a key Broadcom wireless chip starting next year. The iPhone maker has been replacing suppliers’ components with in-house versions, a trend that’s also set to hit chipmaker Qualcomm Inc. Tan said during the call that Broadcom continued to be highly engaged with Apple on multiyear road maps for various technologies. He also said that Broadcom remained open to acquisitions. “That has been a core part of our strategy and business model of this company for the last 10 years,” he said.Warner Bros. Discovery, Inc.
