In the letter made available to the media in Abuja on Sunday, Clark described the removal as a gross injustice and a blot on Nigeria’s democratic record. Clark commended Justice Kekere-Ekun’s commitment to cleaning up the judiciary, emphasising the importance of an efficient and incorruptible judicial system. “Without an efficient and incorruptible judiciary, Nigeria will end up as a failed country,” he wrote, expressing the hope that ongoing reforms would restore public confidence in the judiciary. In revisiting the events surrounding Justice Onnoghen’s ousting, the foremost South-South leader described it as an orchestrated humiliation carried out by Buhari and his then-Attorney General, Abubakar Malami. He characterised the suspension of Onnoghen and the subsequent appointment of Justice Ibrahim Tanko Mohammed as Acting CJN as “callous, unjust, and barbaric.” The elder statesman argued that Onnoghen was unfairly targeted to ensure the judiciary aligned with Buhari’s political ambitions, particularly during the 2019 presidential election. He recounted how Onnoghen’s removal circumvented due process, as the National Judicial Council (NJC) was not consulted, and alleged that judicial tribunals established under Justice Tanko Mohammed were manipulated to favour Buhari’s re-election. Clark did not mince words in condemning the broader culture of impunity under Buhari’s administration, likening it to practices in autocratic regimes. He called for accountability, urging the administration of President Bola Tinubu to ensure that no individual or officeholder is above the law. “Sacred cows must not exist in Nigeria, no matter whose ox is gored,” Clark asserted. He criticised the tendency of former presidents to avoid scrutiny despite allegations of corruption, noting, “Today in Nigeria, we have corrupt presidents accusing their successors of corruption without reflecting on their own actions in office.” Clark also highlighted the irony in Onnoghen’s case, recalling how the former CJN had been part of the Supreme Court panel whose ruling favoured Buhari in the 2011 presidential election dispute. Municipal vacancy law hasn’t been kind to the Hoboken City Council, which was given just one month to find someone to fill the now vacant Sixth Ward council seat while simultaneously grieving the sudden loss of a colleague. Wednesday will be the final council meeting before the Dec. 5 deadline to appoint a new councilmember, and as of this week, members of the divided council said they are still struggling to find a candidate for the position that would receive enough votes to pass. If there is no vote, or if a candidate does not receive a majority of the votes, the seat will remain vacant until a special election next November. Sixth Ward Councilwoman Jen Giattino died unexpectedly Nov. 5 during the first year of her fourth term. Councilwoman Tiffanie Fisher, who had both a close personal friendship with Giattino and considered her an ally on the council, said that she has been interested in supporting Giattino’s husband, Joe Giattino, as the new councilmember should he be interested, but as of Monday could not confirm that he wanted to be nominated. “We have to find someone that will get five votes and there aren’t a lot of those people out there and we believe Joe would have five votes,” Fisher said. “I think people would know that he would honor her legacy and be fair, but are there other people as well? “Other people have put their hands up and we’ve had those conversations and it’s just very fluid. I can’t stress enough how challenging of a situation it is.” Jen Giattino always ran independently of Mayor Ravi Bhalla’s slate of candidates and faced opponents that he endorsed. With Giattino on the council, the members critical of the Bhalla Administration held a slight majority this year. During the last 20 years, the market typically eked out small gains or losses in the holiday period from Thanksgiving to the New Year. There have been more holiday-season gains (15) than there have been losses (5) for the S&P 500 over the 20-year period. The biggest increase during the holiday period was 8.3% in 2011. The largest decrease was 5.4% in 2018. More on stocks: There have also been a few instances when the market performed better during the holiday period than it did during the entire year. In 2007, the S&P's gain during the Thanksgiving and New Year holiday period was just slightly better than its annual increase. Sophomore Ilse Tromp also scored two goals and Olivia Bent-Cole (Philadelphia) rounded out the Wildcats' scoring with a single score. Northwestern did all its damage in the first half, jumping out to a 5-0 lead. It was a NCAA championship game record for most goals in a half. “We’ve been here three times before and we wanted to come out like that type of team,” Zimmer told the ESPN broadcast. Ashley Sessa, the USA national team member and Schwenksville, Pa., native, set the program record for points in a season with 67 (24 goals, 19 assists), breaking Chelsea Armstrong’s record set in 2012. “Obviously it’s nice to score in a big game,” Zimmer said. " But none of that happens without my teammates. We knew coming into this game the tone we wanted to set." The Wildcats, who have reached the national championship game in four straight years, compiled their best season in program history finishing with a 23-1 record. Zimmer, who played on Team USA in the Olympics over the summer, and Tromp became the second duo in NCAA history to each score multiple goals in the national title game. Wildcat goaltender Annabel Skubisz recorded her a school-record 14th shutout of the season. Northwestern also features grad student Lauren Wadas (Annville/Palmyra) and Lauren Hunter (Lower Dauphin), plus Pa. natives Eva Nemeth (Great Valley) and Faye Post (Lake-Lehman).
