Speak to the prime minister at the edges of these events, and he can make a compelling case for his missions and the clarity he has for government. But somehow it is getting lost in translation as the missions become the first steps, become milestones with three foundations to boot. It can be hard to find a narrative in what this government is trying to do. Thursday was an attempt to change that with six measurable milestones now set up so you, Whitehall and the cabinet, are all crystal clear about where they are heading. Some of them are a departure from manifesto pledges, others are not. Some of them are genuinely ambitious, others less so. The manifesto promise to have the fastest growing economy in the G7 is now an "aim" while the new milestone is to "raise living standards in every part of the United Kingdom, so working people have more money in their pockets" is a new target. The idea is to make the pledge more "human" but the PM wouldn't say how much he wanted to raise living standards - and household disposable income is already set to rise by the end of this parliament. Then on opportunity for all, in the run-up to the election the government promised to recruit 6,500 more teachers to improve teaching in state secondaries. Now the milestone they are asking to be measured on is a promise that 75% of five-year-olds are ready to learn in England when they start school against 67% today. There is a new milestone to fast-track planning decisions on at least 150 major economic infrastructure projects. There is a milestone to put a named bobby back on the beat in every neighbourhood, while the pledge to halve violence against women and girls has not been marked up as a milestone. Why are they doing it now and to what end? At its heart this is an attempt to give voters clear targets on which they can, to quote Starmer himself, "hold the government's feet to the fire". But it felt a bit like a rag bag of measures in which some past promises were pushed aside and others pumped up. The 1.5 million housing target, the pledge to return to the NHS standard of 92% of patients being seen for elective treatment in 18 weeks, the commitment to green power by 2030 are all ambitious. But things that are perhaps too risky or hard to meet have been dropped. One of the biggest omissions in the milestones was migration. This surprised me, not least because the prime minister had said clearly that the economy and borders were his two main priorities in government and a clear concern for voters. But instead of making it one of his milestone measures, for which the public can hold him accountable, the PM said securing borders was one of the "foundations" of his government. There is no metric on which to measure him beyond net migration coming down from record levels of 800,000 plus in the past couple of years. Perhaps he could have been more ambitious in setting a target to hit in terms of cutting legal migration or small boat crossings. Perhaps he could have committed to a deportation figure - something that Harriet Harman suggested he might have done on our episode of this week. But I suspect, in the end, Number 10 decided it was too risky to try to set targets. But with a disaffected electorate, high levels of scepticism, and a Reform party playing into that anti-politics sentiment, Starmer knows he must galvanise his government to try to deliver tangibles before the next election, and this speech will perhaps be looked back on as one aimed as much at Whitehall as it was you, the voter. He explicitly challenged the British state to deliver in this speech saying his Plan for Change was "the most ambitious plan for government in a generation" and would require a "change to the nature of governing itself" as he called on the state to become more dynamic, decisive, innovate, embracing of technology and artificial intelligence. "Make no mistake, this plan will land on desks across Whitehall with the heavy thud of a gauntlet being thrown down, a demand given the urgency of our times," he told his audience as he fired a warning shot to Whitehall. She was taken off the hill on a sled and waved to the cheering crowd before going to a clinic for evaluation. “Not really too much cause for concern at this point, I just can’t move,” she said later in a video posted on social media . “I have a pretty good abrasion and something stabbed me. ... I’m so sorry to scare everybody. It looks like all scans so far are clear.” She plans to skip the slalom race Sunday, writing on Instagram she will be “cheering from the sideline.” The 29-year-old was leading after the first run of the GS and charging for her 100th World Cup win. She was within sight of the finish line, five gates onto Killington’s steep finish pitch, when she an outside edge. She hit a gate and did a somersault before sliding into another gate. The fencing slowed her momentum as she came to an abrupt stop. Reigning Olympic GS champion Sara Hector of Sweden won in a combined time of 1 minute, 53.08 seconds. Zrinka Ljutic of Croatia was second and Swiss racer Camille Rast took third. The Americans saw Paula Moltzan and Nina O’Brien finish fifth and sixth. “It’s just so sad, of course, to see Mikaela crash like that and skiing so well,” Hector said on the broadcast after her win. “It breaks my heart and everybody else here.” The crash was a surprise for everyone. Shiffrin rarely DNFs — ski racing parlance for “did not finish.” In 274 World Cup starts, she DNF'd only 18 times. The last time she DNF'd in GS was January 2018. Shiffrin also has not suffered any devastating injuries. In her 14-year career, she has rehabbed only two on-hill injuries: a torn medial collateral ligament and bone bruising in her right knee in December 2015 and a sprained MCL and tibiofibular ligament in her left knee after a downhill crash in January 2024. Neither knee injury required surgery, and both times, Shiffrin was back to racing within two months. However, the Bengals have had some time of their own. While the Steelers had a mini bye week after playing on Thursday Night Football in Week 12, Cincinnati had a full bye. Both teams should be well-rested and well-prepared to face each other, especially with what they have to fight for. The 8-3 Steelers are looking to keep control of the AFC North, while the 4-7 Bengals have their whole season on the line. While doing his usual breakdowns on The Mike Tomlin Show , Head Coach Mike Tomlin may have helped the Bengals out a little bit. Whether he dropped a truth bomb or not could be up for debate, but the team likely won't take kindly to his subtle jab at them. "[The Cincinnati Bengals] are a good football team, but like Bill Parcells says, 'you are what your record says you are,'" Tomlin said. "They haven't won the close ones, but I doubt that has affected their feeling about themselves. They got some talented players. They just hadn't made some plays in some waning moments, really kind of in all three phases." The Bengals definitely have not made life very easy on themselves, and every little mistake they make tends to stack up and lead to a close loss. Six of their seven defeats have been by one possession, as opposed to just two wins by that same margin. Even then, they usually lose these games in the final few minutes, as Tomlin said. In their Week 2 contest against the Kansas City Chiefs, they held a slim 25-23 lead in the game's final seconds, but a brutal pass interference penalty put the Chiefs in field goal range, and Kansas City won at the buzzer. On two separate occasions, the Bengals got into a shootout with the Baltimore Ravens. Both games ended thanks to a heartbreaking mistake: an interception in the first contest at Cincinnati, then a failed game-winning two-point conversion attempt in Baltimore. There are more examples of the Bengals making backbreaking blunders to cost themselves a win throughout the 2024 season, but at the end of the day, it just proves Tomlin's point. They have all kinds of talent in all three phases, especially on offense, but they just fail in the worst possible moments. That is an indictment on Head Coach Zac Taylor. His team has all the talent in the world, they are usually prepared for their opponents, but when it comes down to the biggest possessions, they can't find ways to win. Tomlin is always harping on doing the little things right. Taylor might want to take notes if he wants to save his job. Steelers Need To Put Their Money Where Their Mouth Is In Week 13 Even with the Steelers' great season so far, this is no automatic game for them. On top of that, they have a history of overlooking and not preparing for weaker opponents. They even allegedly fell for that trap the week before, as Greg Newsome II accused the Steelers of having no respect for his Cleveland Browns . If Tomlin makes that same mistake again, the Bengals will feast on Pittsburgh's weaknesses. Yes, they are what their record says they are, but that means nothing in the grand scheme of things. They are still insanely talented, and they are fighting for their lives. While a loss to the Steelers won't officially end their season, it makes it so a perfect stretch of games on won't be enough to make the playoffs on their own. With that in mind, plus the fact that Tomlin subtly said that they are actually not a good team despite the talent on the team, the Bengals will be ready to play. What better way would there be to prove yourself as a true threat than to go up against the division leader and punch them in the mouth?
