Steel said in a statement that “like all journeys, this one is ending for a new one to begin.” When she captured the seat in 2020, Steel joined Washington state Democrat Marilyn Strickland as the first Korean-American women elected to Congress. Tran, a lawyer and worker rights advocate and the son of Vietnamese refugees, declared victory earlier this week. He said his win “is a testament to the spirit and resilience of our community. As the son of Vietnamese refugees, I understand firsthand the journey and sacrifices many families in our district have made for a better life." The contest is one of the last to be decided this year, with Republicans now holding 220 seats in the House, with Democrats at 214. The Associated Press has not declared a winner in California's 13th District, where Democrat Adam Gray was leading Republican Rep. John Duarte by a couple of hundred votes. Steel held an early edge after Election Day, but late-counted ballots pushed Tran over the top. Steel filed a statement of candidacy on Monday with federal regulators, which would allow her to continue raising funds. It wasn’t immediately clear if she planned to seek a return to Congress. In the campaign, Tran warned of Republican threats to abortion rights. Steel opposes abortion with exceptions for rape, incest or to save the life of the pregnant woman, while not going so far as to support a federal ban. Tran also warned that President-elect Donald Trump's return to the White House would put democracy at risk. On Capitol Hill, Steel has been outspoken in resisting tax increases and says she stands strongly with Israel in its war with Hamas. “As our greatest ally in the Middle East, the United States must always stand with Israel,” she said. She advocates for more police funding and has spotlighted her efforts on domestic violence and sexual abuse. The largest demographic in the district, which is anchored in Orange County southeast of Los Angeles, is Asian Americans, and it includes the nation’s biggest Vietnamese community. Democrats hold a 4-point registration edge.

New York Jets running back Breece Hall sat out practice Wednesday with an injured knee and it's uncertain if he'll play Sunday against Seattle. Interim coach Jeff Ulbrich said Hall hurt the knee in the Jets’ 28-27 loss to the Indianapolis Colts on Nov. 17, but was able to finish the game. Hall experienced some soreness, so the team is being cautious with its leading rusher. “We’re going to protect him from himself a little bit today, but we’ll see how the week goes along,” Ulbrich said. “Still hopeful that he’s going to play for us, but we’ll see.” Hall has 632 yards rushing and four touchdowns, along with 46 catches for 401 yards and two scores for the Jets, who were holding their first full practice since returning from their bye-week break. Rookies Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis would likely fill in if Hall can't play. Left tackle Tyron Smith remains sidelined with a neck injury and Ulbrich acknowledged Smith could be a candidate for the injured reserve list. Smith, in his first season with New York after 13 in Dallas, missed the game against the Colts after leaving the Jets' loss in Arizona with the neck injury. Rookie Olu Fashanu would be in line to start again in Smith's place. “Just not enough improvement at this point,” Ulbrich said of Smith. “It’s really become apparent that we might have to do what’s best for Tyron in that way. But (we're) still collecting information.” Ulbrich said Smith, whose injury hasn't been specified, has been splitting his time between being at the facility and having exams elsewhere. “He's getting stuff done,” Ulbrich said. “He's got the best doctors on Earth working with him.” The Jets could get linebacker C.J. Mosley back from a herniated disk in his neck that sidelined him the past four games. Mosley, who was injured during pregame warmups on Oct. 27, fully practiced Wednesday. “He's going to give it a run,” Ulbrich said before practice. “We're going to see what it looks like. ... And then tomorrow will be the big test. You know, get pads on him, get him to contact and see how he responds with that. If things go well, which I’m hopeful they will, he’ll go. If not, he won’t.” Wide receiver Malachi Corley didn't practice because of an illness and cornerback Quan'tez Stiggers was out for personal reasons. Offensive lineman Xavier Newman was limited after having his practice window opened. Newman has been on injured reserve since hurting his neck at Pittsburgh last month and being taken to the hospital. AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/NFL

By HALELUYA HADERO, Associated Press President-elect Donald Trump asked the Supreme Court on Friday to pause the potential TikTok ban from going into effect until his administration can pursue a “political resolution” to the issue. The request came as TikTok and the Biden administration filed opposing briefs to the court, in which the company argued the court should strike down a law that could ban the platform by Jan. 19 while the government emphasized its position that the statute is needed to eliminate a national security risk. “President Trump takes no position on the underlying merits of this dispute. Instead, he respectfully requests that the Court consider staying the Act’s deadline for divestment of January 19, 2025, while it considers the merits of this case,” said Trump’s amicus brief, which supported neither party in the case. The filings come ahead of oral arguments scheduled for Jan. 10 on whether the law, which requires TikTok to divest from its China-based parent company or face a ban, unlawfully restricts speech in violation of the First Amendment. Earlier this month, a panel of three federal judges on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit unanimously upheld the statute , leading TikTok to appeal the case to the Supreme Court. The brief from Trump said he opposes banning TikTok at this junction and “seeks the ability to resolve the issues at hand through political means once he takes office.”Bukayo Saka faces “more than two months” on the sidelines after undergoing surgery to repair his torn hamstring, says Mikel Arteta. Saka sustained the injury to his right leg during the first half of Arsenal ’s Premier League win over Crystal Palace on Saturday. Speaking on Friday after Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Ipswich Town , Arteta said the 23-year-old would be out until March. Advertisement “He had a procedure. Everything went well, but unfortunately he will be out for many, many weeks,” said Arteta. “I said many weeks so I think it will be more than two months. I don’t know exactly how much longer. It will depend on how the scar tissue starts to heal, the first week or so, the mobility of that. Let’s see it’s very difficult to say.” It means the England forward is set to miss key league games against Tottenham Hotspur (January 15) and Manchester City (February 2), as well as Arsenal’s FA Cup third-round tie against Manchester United (January 12). He will also be absent for their remaining two Champions League league phase fixtures, both of which are in January, and the knockout phase play-offs if Arsenal fail to finish in the top eight. Having already missed two matches for Arsenal and three for England with separate hamstring issues earlier this season, Saka will also be unavailable for Arsenal’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Newcastle United on February 5. In more positive news, Arteta revealed that Raheem Sterling ’s knee injury is not as worse feared and the 30-year-old would be assessed before Arsenal’s trip to Brentford on New Year’s Day. “We have to see this week how he evolves,” said Arteta. “We probably expected the knee injury to take longer than it has evolved in the last few days. Hopefully that’s good news because we need him.” GO DEEPER Saka is the latest to suffer as hamstring problems increase across the Premier League (Alex Pantling/Getty Images)The Inside Scoop On The First Ever Electric Vehicle To Hit The Rose Bowl Parade

Donald Trump's reelection echoes the rise of Maj. Gen. Edwin A. Walker, a member of the militant right in the 1960s, ODU senior lecturer and author Peter Adams writes in a guest column.

Major League Baseball has undergone some dramatic changes in recent years that have altered the game. The designated hitter in both leagues, expanded playoffs and most recently the pitch clock. But one idea that has been discussed and kicked around in recent months would be one of the most dramatic changes ever and completely change the very nature of the way the game has been played for more than 150 years. It is the golden at-bat, and it is something that commissioner Rob Manfred casually mentioned this week on John Ourand's podcast . “There are a variety of (rule change ideas) that are being talked about out there,” Manfred said. “One of them — there was a little buzz around it at an owners’ meeting — was the idea of a "Golden At-Bat.” The concept of the "Golden At-Bat" is simple enough — one time per game a team could choose any hitter in its lineup, whether it is their turn to hit or net, and send them up to the plate for an at-bat. It is not an imminent rule change, but the fact it is being talked about and the fact the commissioner is comment on it is a pretty good sign that it is something that it is being seriously considered down the line. It should stay an idea and never go beyond that. While it could certainly add some intrigue to games and another layer of strategy for managers, it still seems like more of a gimmick than anything else. And it is too dramatic of a change to the way the sport is played. You set a batting lineup, and that is it. How the game unfolds after that is up to the play on the field. The pitch clock was always seen as controversial to baseball purists, but it does not change the way the game is played. It just makes it happen faster. The designated hitter might have its critics, but again, it is still a basic concept with a batter in the lineup hitting in order. The Athletic's Jayson Stark outlined a couple of possible ways the rule could be implemented, including limiting it to only at-bats before the seventh inning, or only allowing teams that are trailing to use it late in games. There is also the possibility that a team could choose a hitter for the "Golden At-Bat" before their spot in the lineup, creating the possibility for them to hit two times in a row. This idea, by the way, has already been put into practice with the Savannah Bananas, baseball's answer to the Harlem Globetrotters. Introducing the newest Banana Ball Rule: Rule #11 - The Golden Batter Rule. Now, in 2024 the team's best hitter can always bat in the 9th inning, when the game is on the line! pic.twitter.com/MGYz6USJti In that setting, it is fine. You go into a Savannah Bananas game expecting to see chaos, randomness and something that vaguely resembles a baseball game. But it is a gimmick that has no place in real, competitive baseball games at the highest level of the sport. Yeah, it would create some additional drama. But it would also rob the game of some of its greatest, most magical and most unexpected moments. Bucky Dent's home run against the Boston Red Sox does not exist in a game or league where the New York Yankees could simply say, "Hey, Reggie Jackson, go hit again even though it is not your turn in the lineup." Baseball can make changes. It can try to add more intrigue. But it should stay away from gimmicks. This feels too gimmicky. It should stay in Banana-ball.

TORONTO (AP) — Hannah Miller scored a power-play goal with 1:38 remaining in the game, lifting the Toronto Sceptres to a 3-1 victory over the Boston Fleet in the Professional Women’s Hockey League season opener on Saturday. With Boston standout Hilary Knight in the penalty box for a vicious boarding penalty on Sceptres defender Renata Fast, Miller made good on her rebound attempt on a shot by Daryl Watts with a half-open net. Fast recovered for an assist on the winner before 8,089 fans at Coca-Cola Coliseum. The Fleet challenged the goal, but video review deemed Miller’s shot was good. Sarah Nurse got Toronto on the board with a short-handed tally 11:50 into the first period and Emma Maltais added an empty-net strike with 12 seconds left. Boston’s Hilary Knight opened the scoring 3 minutes in, sending a slap shot past Toronto goalie Kristen Campbell, who registered 18 stops on the night. Toronto outshot Boston 41-19. Boston goalie Aerin Frankel, a big reason why her team advanced to the Walter Cup final last spring, had 38 saves. Sceptres: Billie Jean King MVP Natalie Spooner missed the season opener. The PWHL scoring champion underwent left knee surgery in June after getting injured in Game 3 of Toronto’s first-round series against Minnesota. Fleet: Defender Emma Greco played her first game for Boston. She was part of the Walter Cup-winning Minnesota team that defeated Boston in a three-game series last spring. With the game tied 1-1, the Sceptres failed to score during a 59-second 5-on-3 advantage midway through the second period. Boston blocked five shots during the span. Last year, Toronto enjoyed an 11-game win streak en route to its regular-season championship, including three wins against Boston. Boston will play its home opener on Wednesday, a rematch with the Walter Cup-champion Minnesota. Toronto visits Ottawa on Tuesday. High price paid for David Jiricek an acceptable investment for Wild GM Bill GuerinWASHINGTON The White House said Tuesday that it is "relieved" by South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol's decision to backtrack on his short-lived effort to impose martial law on the country. “We are relieved President Yoon has reversed course on his concerning declaration of martial law and respected the ROK National Assembly’s vote to end it," a National Security Council spokesperson told Anadolu. "Democracy is at the foundation of the U.S.-ROK alliance, and we will continue to monitor the situation.” The spokesperson, who commented on the matter on condition of anonymity, was referring to South Korea by its formal acronym. A Cabinet meeting presided over by Prime Minister Han Duck-soo early Wednesday morning passed a resolution lifting martial law after Yoon backtracked from his decision to impose it. With the decision, martial law was effectively lifted from the country, according to a procedure laid down in the Constitution. “Martial law will be lifted immediately by accepting the National Assembly's (Parliament) request through a State Council (Cabinet) meeting,” Yoon said in a second national address within hours of declaring martial law to “save the country against anti-state forces.” Yoon had imposed martial law effective late Tuesday for the first time in 45 years. But 190 lawmakers in the 300-seat parliament voted down his move, making it obligatory on him to comply with their motion. Following the declaration of martial law, all political activities were prohibited, including that of parliament, local councils, political parties and political associations as well as rallies and demonstrations. People rose in celebration after Yoon said he would comply with the parliament's decision. The president also said troops had withdrawn from parliament.US President-elect Donald Trump asked the Supreme Court on Friday to pause the potential TikTok ban from going into effect until his administration can pursue a “political resolution” to the issue.
