Denton’s Walmart on South Loop 288 is launching a pilot program that equips some employees with body-worn cameras in an effort to mitigate theft and customer conflict. The Denton Record-Chronicle visited both Denton Walmart stores, located at 1515 S. Loop 288 and 2750 W. University Drive, on Thursday. A small number of employees were wearing the body cameras at the South Loop 288 store. The employees wearing the devices were located at the self-check-out stations and were greeters, who occasionally check customer receipts. Other employees throughout the Loop 288 store’s floor were not wearing body cameras at the time. A sign at the store’s entrances informs customers that there is video and audio recording at the store and that body-worn cameras are in use. There were not any employees seen wearing body cameras at the University Drive store on Thursday. Though the stores have in-house asset protection and contracts with the Denton Police Department to provide off-duty officer security, Walmart confirmed it’s looking for additional security measures. “While we don’t talk about the specifics of our security measures, we are always looking at new and innovating technology used across the retail industry,” Walmart said in a statement to USA Today. “This is a pilot we are testing in one market and we will evaluate the result before making any longer-term decisions.” An employee at a unspecified Walmart store posted a photo on Reddit of the devices in a charging station. A poster directs employees to wear the cameras at chest level and activate them if an interaction with a customer is escalating. It tells employees not to wear the cameras in associate spaces or bathrooms. The Denton Walmart stores have long been hot spots for shoplifting, assault and other criminal behavior. For example, during the week of Thanksgiving, Denton police arrested a man on an aggravated assault charge for allegedly barricading himself in the Walmart on University Drive and shooting arrows at employees and customers. WILTON, Iowa — Every year the U.S. egg industry kills about 350 million male chicks because, while the fuzzy little animals are incredibly cute, they will never lay eggs, so have little monetary value. That longtime practice is changing, thanks to new technology that enables hatcheries to quickly peer into millions of fertilized eggs and spot male embryos, then grind them up for other uses before they mature into chicks. The system began operating this month in Iowa at the nation’s largest chick hatchery, which handles about 387,000 eggs each day. “We now have ethically produced eggs we can really feel good about,” said Jörg Hurlin, managing director of Agri Advanced Technologies, the German company that spent more than a decade developing the SUV-sized machine that can separate eggs by sex. Even Americans who are careful to buy cage free or free range eggs typically aren’t aware that hundreds of millions of male chicks are killed each year, usually when they are only a day old. Most of the animals are culled through a process called maceration that uses whirling blades to nearly instantly kill the baby birds — something that seems horrifying but that the industry has long claimed is the most humane alternative. “Does the animal suffer? No because it’s instantaneous death. But it’s not pretty because it’s a series of rotating blades,” said Suzanne Millman, a professor at Iowa State University who focuses on animal welfare. Chick culling is an outgrowth of a poultry industry that for decades has raised one kind of chicken for eggs and another for meat. Egg-laying chickens are too scrawny to profitably be sold for meat, so the male chicks are ground up and used as additives for other products. It wasn’t until European governments began passing laws that outlawed maceration that companies started puzzling out how to determine chicken sex before the chicks can hatch. Several companies can now do that, but unlike most competitors, AAT’s machine doesn’t need to pierce the shell and instead uses a bright light and sensitive cameras to detect an embryo’s sex by noting feather shading. Males are white, and females are dark. The machine, called Cheggy, can process up to 25,000 eggs an hour, a pace that can accommodate the massive volume seen at hatcheries in the U.S. Besides the Cheggy machine in the small eastern Iowa city of Wilton, an identical system has been installed in Texas, both at hatcheries owned by Hy-Line North America. The process has one key limitation: It works only on brown eggs because male and female chicks in white eggs have similar-colored feathers. That’s not a huge hindrance in Europe, where most eggs sold at groceries are brown. But in the U.S., white shell eggs make up about 81% of sales, according to the American Egg Board. Brown shell eggs are especially sought by people who buy cage-free, free-range and organic varieties. Hurlin said he thinks his company will develop a system to tell the sex of embryos in white eggs within five years, and other companies also are working to meet what’s expected to be a growing demand. Eggs from hens that were screened through the new system will supply NestFresh Eggs, a Southern California-based business that distributes organic eggs produced by small operations across the country. The eggs will begin showing up on store shelves in mid-July and NestFresh executive vice president Jasen Urena said his company will begin touting the new chick-friendly process on cartons and with a larger marketing effort. “It’s a huge jump in animal welfare,” Urena said. “We’ve done so much work over the years on the farms. How do we make the lives of these chickens better? Now we’re able to step back and go into the hatching phase.” Urena said the new system was more expensive but any price increase on store shelves would be minimal. The animal welfare group Mercy for Animals has tried to draw attention to chick culling for more than a decade in hopes of ending the practice. Walter Sanchez-Suarez, the group’s animal behavior and welfare scientist, said laws in Europe outlawing chick culling and new efforts to change the practice in the U.S. are wonderful developments. The 5-11, 228-pound Manu was an under-the-radar recruit coming out of Servite High School in Anaheim, California. Manu signed with Arizona in 2022 and joined his Servite teammates in quarterback Noah Fifita, wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan and tight end Keyan Burnett, who also entered the transfer portal. After standing out on Arizona’s scout-team defense, Manu emerged as a starter halfway through his freshman season in 2022. Last season, Manu led the Pac-12 in tackles (116) and was named to the All-Pac-12 First Team and Associated Press All-Pac-12 First Team. Manu became the first Wildcat to lead the Pac-12 in tackles since Scooby Wright in 2014. Manu entered this season with preseason All-Big 12 honors. This industrial chemical reaction between hydrogen and nitrogen produces ammonia , the key ingredient in synthetic fertilizers that supply much of the world's food supply and enabled the population explosion of the last century. It may also threaten the existence of future generations. The process consumes about 2% of the world's total energy supply, and the hydrogen required for the reaction mostly comes from fossil fuels. Taking inspiration from how nature—including lightning—produces ammonia, a team led by the University at Buffalo has developed a reactor that produces the chemical commodity from nitrogen in the air and water, without any carbon footprint . This plasma-electrochemical reactor, described in a study published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society , can sustain a high ammonia production rate of approximately 1 gram per day for over 1,000 hours at room temperature, and does so directly from air. The researchers say this is a significant advance toward green ammonia synthesis at an industrially competitive production rate and reaction stability. "Ammonia is often considered the chemical that feeds the world, but we also have to face the realization that the Haber-Bosch process has not been modernized since its invention 100 years ago. It still uses high-temperature, high-pressure processing, and generates a large carbon footprint, making it unsustainable for the long term," says the study's corresponding author, Chris Li, Ph.D., assistant professor of chemistry in the UB College of Arts and Sciences. "Our process only requires air and water, and can be powered by renewable electricity." Mimicking nature's nitrogen cycle Nature has its own way of producing fertilizer. In nitrogen fixation , the electrical energy of a lightning strike breaks up nitrogen molecules in the atmosphere to form different nitrogen oxide species. After falling down as rainwater, nitrogen oxides are converted into ammonia by bacteria in the soil, supplying plants with nutrients. In the UB-led team's two-step reactor, the role of lightning is replaced with plasma and the role of bacteria replaced by a catalyst of copper-palladium. "Our plasma reactor converts humidified air into nitrogen oxide fragments, which are then placed in an electrochemical reactor that uses the copper-palladium catalyst to convert them into ammonia," Li says. Crucially, the catalyst is able to adsorb and stabilize the numerous nitrogen dioxide intermediates created by the plasma reactor. The team's graph theory algorithm identified that most nitrogen oxide compounds have to cycle through nitric oxide or amine as an intermediate step before becoming ammonia. This allowed the team to intelligently design a catalyst that binds favorably with those two compounds. "When plasma energy or a lightning strike activates nitrogen, you generate a soup of nitrogen oxide compounds. To simultaneously convert, in our case, up to eight different chemical compounds into ammonia is incredibly difficult," says Xiaoli Ge, the study's first author and a postdoctoral researcher in Li's lab. "Graph theory essentially allows us to map out all the different reaction paths and then identify a bottleneck chemical. We then optimize our electrochemical reactor to stabilize the bottleneck chemical, so that all the different intermediates will be selectively transferred into ammonia." Scaling up Li's team is currently in the process of scaling up their reactor and are exploring both a startup and partnerships with industry to help commercialize it. UB's Technology Transfer Office has filed a patent application on the reactor and methods for its use. Over half the world's ammonia is produced by four countries—China, the United States, Russia and India—while many developing countries are unable to produce their own. While the Haber-Bosch process must be conducted on a large scale in a centralized power plant, Li says their system can be done at a much smaller scale. "You can imagine our reactors in something like a medium-sized shipping container with solar panels on the roof. This can then be placed anywhere in the world and generate ammonia on demand for that region," he says. "That's a very exciting advantage of our system, and it will allow us to produce ammonia for underdeveloped regions with limited access to the Haber-Bosch process." The exploration and production (E&P) company on Wednesday shared the details of its production enhancement registered during the period between April 2024 and November 2024 via notice to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX). “The company is pleased to announce its contribution towards Pakistan’s energy outlook and reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the country’s energy security by prioritising the maximisation of domestic hydrocarbon production,” read the statement. PPL shared that with many of its producing fields maturing and on their natural decline, “the company has strategically implemented multiple cost-efficient production enhancement initiatives, including rigless interventions, surface system optimisation, and workovers delivering significant results at a fraction of the cost of drilling new wells”. PPL achieves production enhancement milestone The company said that from April 2024 to November 2024, the enhancement has resulted in a substantial production gain of approximately 17 MMscfd of natural gas, 400 barrels per day (bpd) of oil/condensate, and 4 tonnes per day of LPG. PPL shared that through workover optimisation, the company has enhanced gas output by 8.4 MMscfd through successful workovers on Sui-71 and Sui-73. 2. The company has “achieved an increase of 7.1 MMscfd gas production from the Sui and Gambat South Gas Fields by optimising wellhead surface fittings and plant processing systems”. PPL informed that through the installation and modification of artificial lift systems at Adhi-28, Adhi-29, and Adhi South-5, the company delivered 200 bpd of oil/condensate, 2 tonnes per day of LPG, and 0.5 MMscfd gas. Lastly, the company boosted production by ~200 bpd of oil/condensate, ~2 tonnes per day of LPG, and 1.3 MMscfd gas via acid wash treatments and scale removal at Adhi, Hala, and Sui Fields. “These initiatives underscore the company’s commitment towards cost-effectively enhancing indigenous hydrocarbon production, contributing meaningfully to bridging the energy demand-supply gap and conserving foreign exchange for the nation,” PPL added.

The Foreign Secretary insisted the sovereignty pact was a 'very good deal' as he played down claims it was on the verge of an embarrassing collapse. Serious doubt has been cast over the deal's future following criticism of its terms by the new Mauritian prime minister and opposition from allies of incoming US president Donald Trump . Navinchandra Ramgoolam, who was elected a fortnight ago, said he had 'reservations' about the agreement struck with the previous Mauritian administration. He said he wants time to go over the details with lawyers, and expressed surprise that the deal was struck so close to the African country's general election . Speaking to the BBC , the Mauritian PM did not specify what he disliked. But an ally lashed out at a provision handing the UK and US a 99-year lease on the Diego Garcia airbase. It came after Mr Ramgoolam met with Jonathan Powell, who is Labour's incoming national security adviser and the UK envoy behind the agreement to give away the islands. Mr Powell has been scrambled first to Mauritius and then to Washington DC in a desperate attempt to get the deal done before Mr Trump takes over from Joe Biden in January. It is feared the strategically important archipelago is being 'surrendered' to an ally of China , albeit under a process that began under the previous Tory government. The agreement also faces an additional hurdle as it has been condemned by Marco Rubio, who has been lined up by Mr Trump as the new US secretary of state. He last month labelled the Chagos Islands deal 'a serious threat' to national security that 'threatens critical US military posture in the region'. Speaking to MPs on the House of Commons' foreign affairs committee, Mr Lammy dismissed growing criticism of the agreement. 'I'm very, very confident that this is a deal that the Mauritians will see, in a cross-party sense, as a good deal for them,' the Foreign Secretary said. Tory former Cabinet minister Sir John Whittingdale, a member of the committee, said the Mauritian leader had described the agreement as 'high treason and a sellout'. But Mr Lammy replied: 'Both you and I have said things during an election in order to get elected. He did not say that yesterday.' The Foreign Secretary also pushed back at criticism from Mr Trump's allies, saying: 'This is incredibly sad. I know and I'm sad that there's been so much politicking about this. 'This process begun under the last government and there were ministers who understand entirely why this is so important for our national security and global national security. 'The agencies in the US think this is a good deal. The State Department in the US thinks this is a good deal. 'And most important of all, the Pentagon and the White House think this is a good deal. And that's not just the principal politicians in those in those areas, it is the system.' Mr Lammy said the agreement was a 'very good deal' for 'our national security' because it secured the legal basis of the Diego Garcia military base. He added: 'I'm really reassured about that, and I think an incoming (US) administration will be reassured about that. 'And I'm confident that the Mauritians are still sure about that, despite politicking that we all know goes on.' Labour has insisted it had to strike a deal to protect the Diego Garcia base after the International Court of Justice ruled the UK's administration of the islands was 'unlawful'. But Sir Richard Dearlove, the former head of MI6, branded the legal case 'phoney' and expressed his hope than Mr Trump and Mr Rubio 'shoot this agreement down'. He told Sky News this evening: 'The Chagos Islands are strategically, really important. 'The Mauritian claim to these islands, which are a thousand miles away from (Mauritian capital) Port Louis, well, the case is weak. 'The case is based on a UN vote. So the international law case for surrendering sovereignty seems to me, to be completely phoney.' He added: 'I think they have to realise that this is not in the interests of the United States. It's not in the interests of the UK from the point view of our national security.' The Tories renewed a demand for answers from the Government about the cost to the taxpayer and when full details of the agreement will be made public. Shadow foreign secretary Dame Priti Patel told the Mail: 'While Keir Starmer's special envoy has been sent to beg Donald Trump for his support, ministers refuse to disclose details of negotiations taking place. 'They remain unable to answer basic questions about cost of this deal and the implications it might have on our national security and defence. 'What we do know is that these plans go against our national interests and the views of the Chagossians have been ignored. 'The fact that the new Mauritian prime minister wants more time to consider the deal gives the Government a chance to reflect on their plans and to start providing answers to the serious questions posed.' Former defence secretary Grant Shapps added: 'Now even Mauritius's new prime minister believes Labour's Chagos sovereignty sell-out is a dud. 'It's time for Starmer to scrap the deal and defend British military interests around the world.' Downing Street today insisted the Government's position 'remains unchanged' on the Chagos Islands deal. The Prime Minister's official spokesman said: 'The UK's position on this remains unchanged. 'We have always said that we look forward to engaging with the new Mauritian government and that's exactly what we're doing in order to progress the deal. 'We are now finalising the details of legal texts, the treaty, and will be coming forward for parliamentary scrutiny as part of the ratification process next year.' Labour made the shock announcement in October that it was going to hand sovereignty of Chagos Islands - a British overseas territory for more than 200 years. As part of the arrangement, the US-UK military base on Diego Garcia on the Indian Ocean archipelago will remain operational for at least 99 years. But the president of Mauritius who agreed it, Pravind Jugnauth, was ousted in the election. It has yet to be officially signed. Opponents of the handover are hopeful that Mr Trump will force Labour to scrap the deal when he returns to the White House. But the pendulum then swung dramatically back the other direction on Sunday in Sacramento, when the Jazz allowed the Kings to score 141 points while they only put up 97. Singleton had a team-high 56 catches for 754 yards and three touchdowns in 2024 after delivering 48 receptions for 714 yards and six touchdowns as a true freshman in 2023. He also rushed for 131 yards and a TD on 21 carries in 2024. Singleton had eight catches for 86 yards and a touchdown in the regular-season finale at Georgia, and will reportedly visit the Bulldogs in Athens. The news comes on the same day Georgia wide receiver Nitro Tuggle said he was entering the portal, which officially opened Monday and remains open until Dec. 28. And another Bulldogs wide receiver, Michael Jackson III, announced he would hit the portal again after recording only one catch this season.
