Asensio's shooting prowess was on full display in a recent training session, where he consistently found the back of the net with precision and power. His technique and composure in front of goal have caught the eye of the coaching staff, who believe that he has the potential to become a key player for Real Madrid in the coming seasons.5. Michael Goehring, president and chief executive officer of the Mining Association of British Columbia, said Wednesday, (Dec. 4), that China's decision to ban exports of certain critical minerals and rare earths to the United States demonstrates why it is "vital" for Canada and the U.S. to reduce their dependence on authoritarian regimes for critical mineral supplies and mineral processing. "British Columbians can play a key role in providing the critical minerals the U.S. and our other allies need in the years to come," Goehring said. "B.C. has, or produces, 16 of the 50 minerals the United States has identified as being critical to the nation’s economic and national security. In fact, seven per cent of B.C.’s exports to the US in 2022 were critical minerals and metals, including aluminum, germanium, gallium, indium, lead and zinc." China announced Tuesday, (Dec. 3), that it would immediately ban sales of gallium and germanium among other minerals to the United States following the U.S.'s decision to limit Chinese access to American-made digital technology. China is world's leading supplier of many minerals used in technologies deemed critical in fields like transportation, communication and alternative energy, all of which have a military and security dimension. Chinese efforts to use its dominance in these materials as leverage have not gone unnoticed, as several western jurisdictions have sought out alternative suppliers, including Canada. "In fact, Canada and the U.S. initiated the Joint Action Plan on Critical Minerals Collaboration in 2020 under President Trump to reduce our vulnerability," Goehring said." China’s export ban highlights the need to accelerate our efforts through the Joint Action Plan to grow a resilient North American critical mineral supply chain and advance our mutual economic, defense and security objectives." Whether Goehring's appeal will resonate among decision-makers on either side of the U.S-Canada border is a different question given the prospect of trade tensions with Trump returning to the White House next month. With 17 new critical mineral projects under development, Britisch Columbia can make what Goehring called "a meaningful contribution to North America’s future" while creating jobs for workers, stability for resource communities and shared prosperity throughout B.C. "But these benefits can only be realized if we modernize and expedite the mine permitting and approval process," he said. "(We) are in a race and we need to act quickly. Ongoing permitting delays and uncertainty needlessly drive away investment and lead to deferred or unrealized economic benefits. We need mine permitting to be a competitive advantage for our province."Using a length of sturdy wire and a small hook fashioned from a paperclip, the firefighter ingeniously put together a simple yet effective retrieval device. With skilled precision, he carefully maneuvered the tool through the narrow openings of the drain, guided by the encouraging cheers and support of the gathered crowd.
Nick Kern came off the bench for 20 points and 13 rebounds as Penn State remained unbeaten with an 85-66 thumping of Fordham in a semifinal of the Sunshine Slam on Monday in Daytona Beach, Fla. The Nittany Lions (6-0), who will play either San Francisco or Clemson for the tournament title on Tuesday, put four other players in double figures. Zach Hicks scored 16 points, while Puff Johnson added 15. Ace Baldwin and Yanic Konan Niederhauser each chipped in 12 points. Penn State sank nearly 53 percent of its field goal attempts and earned a 38-30 advantage on the boards, more than enough to offset missing 12 of its 32 foul shots. Four players reached double figures for the Rams (3-4), led by 15 points apiece from Jackie Johnson III and reserve Joshua Rivera. Romad Dean and Jahmere Tripp each added 13. Fordham was as close as 56-49 after Tripp made a layup with 14:25 left in the game. But the Nittany Lions responded with a 16-1 run, capped with a layup by Kern for a 22-point lead at the 9:33 mark, and they never looked back. The main storyline prior to tipoff was whether Penn State could continue its torrid early start that saw it come into the day leading Division I in steals and ranked second in scoring at 98.2 points per game. The Nittany Lions certainly played to their billing for most of the first half, establishing a 21-8 lead at the 10:08 mark via Hicks' three-point play. Fordham predictably struggled early with the pressure defense, committing four turnovers in the first four minutes. But the Rams got their bearings over the last 10 minutes and made some shots. They got as close as four on two occasions late in the half before Penn State pushed the lead to 42-34 at the half. The officials were busy in the half, calling 23 fouls and administering 27 free throws. --Field Level Media
N'Golo Kante, currently plying his trade with the English Premier League side Chelsea, has long been regarded as one of the best defensive midfielders in the world. His tireless work rate, exceptional ball-winning abilities, and tactical intelligence have made him a coveted asset for top clubs across Europe. Barcelona, known for its possession-based style of play and emphasis on ball retention, sees Kante as a perfect fit for their midfield setup.4. Monitoring and Surveillance:The first signal of the policy shift came during the recent meeting of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee. In a rare move, top leaders explicitly mentioned the need to adopt a more "proactive" fiscal policy and a more "prudent" monetary policy. This departure from the previous rhetoric of "stability" and "control" caught many by surprise and signaled a clear intention to steer the economy towards a more flexible and growth-oriented direction.
RALEIGH, N.C. — “It was a somber afternoon.” Nico Sturm shared how the San Jose Sharks found out about the Mackenzie Blackwood trade to the Colorado Avalanche. The Sharks had just practiced at Baptist Health IcePlex in Fort Lauderdale on Monday, right before a flight to Raleigh. Blackwood was a full participant in a hard, hour-long practice, and it looked like business as usual for a San Jose squad that was trying to keep its spirits up after back-to-back lopsided losses to the Tampa Bay Lightning and Florida Panthers. Jake Walman, for example, tried to engage Mario Ferraro in a play-fight in a lighter moment on the ice. “After practice, we all went on the bus,” Sturm said after Tuesday morning skate at Lenovo Center, before the Sharks take on the Carolina Hurricanes tonight. “Bus doesn’t leave, something’s going on, you hear some rumors, and then, I think Warso talked to the leadership group and find out, made a trade.” San Jose Sharks head coach Ryan Warsofsky shared, “When Blacky gets traded, it was right in front of the bus, and every guy got off the bus and gave him a hug.” None of this was for show: Mackenzie Blackwood was genuinely beloved in the Sharks locker room, which GM Mike Grier spoke to yesterday. Alternate captain Ferraro, much the same way himself, appreciated Blackwood’s relentless positivity through two tough seasons. The Sharks have won just 29 of their last 112 games since Blackwood joined the team in the summer of 2023. “When the season may not be going your way, which happens to every team, you need guys to be positive and stay positive and believe in the group,” Ferraro said. “He was always someone that did that and then went out there and played his heart out for us and gave us a chance.” “Infectious guy, always positive attitude, a smile, cracking jokes. Knows when to work hard. Knows when to keep it a little looser when it’s needed,” Sturm said. “I was really close with him,” Ferraro added. “A lot of guys were, he was a team guy, great teammate, great guy to spend some time off the ice with.” Those good vibes reached even Yaroslav Askarov, who Blackwood knew was in line to eventually take his job as San Jose Sharks starter. After the 22-year-old super prospect’s first win as a Shark and first NHL assist on Nov. 25 against the Los Angeles Kings, Blackwood, who backed up Askarov that night, could be heard telling his understudy in the locker room post-game, “You’re like Bobby Orr back there with the puck!” “Loves when the boys do well, just loves the guys. He’s a great team guy,” Jake Walman said. “Any team is pretty lucky to have a guy like that.” And of course, Blackwood kept the rebuilding San Jose Sharks in a lot of games that they had no business being in over the last two years. Exhibit A, Blackwood’s debut in teal last year, a 51-save 2-1 shootout loss to the Avs. Exhibit B, Blackwood’s last game as a Sharks, a 51-save 3-1 defeat to the Florida Panthers. Mackenzie Blackwood appreciation tweet: He is the only goaltender in @NHL history who made 50 saves or more in both his first and last games for a team. He is also the first goalie in #SJSharks history to make 50+ saves in more than one game. He will do well in COL. A great guy. — Dan Rusanowsky (@DanRusanowsky) December 10, 2024 “Obviously, he’s had our back. I think you saw it last game,” Sturm said. “Bailed us out big time.” “Obviously, you know what he did for our group,” Ferraro said. “He competed every night. He kept us in a lot of games.” But like Grier alluded to yesterday, Blackwood played his way out of San Jose. There’s a reason why Colorado, eyeing a deep playoff run, wanted the talented netminder. The rebuilding Sharks didn’t necessarily need to lock up an overperforming 28-year-old UFA-to-be goaltender to a long contract, especially with Askarov waiting in the wings. “We all love him in here, and obviously he’ll be missed,” alternate captain Luke Kunin said. “Like everyone says, that’s an unfortunate part of the business.” It’s Warsofsky’s job to find the silver linings in a somber day, and he did. “Just like we did when we lost Matt Benning, high character people that we lose, we gotta move forward, and it almost has to bring us closer together,” he said. “That’s the type of group we have, I think they love each other and they’re brothers, and it’s painful when those decisions happen, and the business side comes out. But we got to move forward.” Sturm was part of the 2022 Stanley Cup-winning Avalanche, and he’s looking forward to that for Blackwood. “I texted him yesterday, bummed to see him go, good friend, but I told him, I’m excited for him, going to a world-class organization, top-to-bottom, very structured,” Sturm shared. “I told him he’ll be a better player for it at the end of the day, you leave practices every day, you leave the rink thinking, you got better because of the quality of the organization, the coaches, the players.” Frankly, that’s not the San Jose Sharks, yet. Which is why there will be more sad days like this coming for cellar-dwellers, from now until the Mar. 7 Trade Deadline. But as the song goes, first cut is the deepest. In addition, the stabilization of property prices in Beijing has encouraged more buyers to enter the market, as they perceive this as a favorable time to make a purchase. After years of rapid price growth, the real estate market in Beijing has reached a more sustainable level, with prices showing signs of plateauing. This has reduced the fear of missing out on further appreciation and has created a sense of urgency among buyers who want to take advantage of the current market conditions.
Jack Ma, a visionary entrepreneur, transformed Alibaba from a small e-commerce platform into a global powerhouse. However, with his departure and the appointment of a new CEO, there is an air of uncertainty surrounding the future direction of Alibaba.
One key implication of this revisitation is that central banks are signaling a shift towards a more hawkish stance on monetary policy. By revisiting the concept of "moderate accommodation," the Federal Reserve is indicating that it may start tapering its accommodative measures, such as asset purchases and low interest rates, in response to changing economic conditions. This shift towards a more neutral or even tightening policy stance reflects a growing concern about rising inflationary pressures and the need to prevent overheating in the economy.Blame it on the food and drink?
President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday announced former Sen. Kelly Loeffler as his pick to lead the Small Business Administration. “Kelly will bring her experience in business and Washington to reduce red tape, and unleash opportunity for our Small Businesses to grow, innovate, and thrive. She will focus on ensuring that SBA is accountable to Taxpayers by cracking down on waste, fraud, and regulatory overreach,” Trump posted on Truth Social, also noting that she’s co-chairing his inauguration. There had been several discussions between Loeffler and the transition team regarding the role of Agriculture secretary, and CNN reported last month that Trump had been poised to offer her the position. But Trump held off from announcing his Agriculture pick as he issued a slew of others late last month, then eventually offered the role to Brooke Rollins . Loeffler, who briefly represented Georgia in the Senate, had fundraised for Trump during the 2024 race and raised several million dollars for his campaign over the summer when she hosted a debate watch party with Republican National Committee Chair Michael Whatley. Several of Trump’s other Cabinet picks — including Sen. Marco Rubio and Rep. Elise Stefanik — were at that party. Loeffler was among the wealthiest lawmakers during her short time in Congress. Her husband, Jeffrey Sprecher, is the CEO of the Intercontinental Exchange, which owns the New York Stock Exchange. When running for election in 2020, she announced she and her husband were divesting from individual stocks amid sharp criticism over trades she and other lawmakers made ahead of the market downturn caused by the coronavirus. Appointed to the Senate by Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp over the wishes of Trump, Loeffler lost her seat in a 2021 runoff to Democratic now-Sen. Raphael Warnock. Loeffler was a staunch Trump ally in Congress, saying prior to the violence on January 6, 2021, that she planned to vote against certifying her state’s electoral results in support of Trump’s broader effort to upend Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory. After the US Capitol attack, Loeffler backed off her objection, saying on the Senate floor: “When I arrived in Washington this morning, I fully intended to object to the certification of the electoral votes. However, the events that have transpired today have forced me to reconsider, and I cannot now in good conscience object to the certification of these electors.” In the same speech, Loeffler condemned the violence at the Capitol, calling it “abhorrent.” Loeffler was among the witnesses who appeared before the grand jury as part of Trump’s 2020 election subversion criminal case in Georgia. Before joining the Senate, Loeffler served as an executive at a financial services firm in Atlanta. She was also a co-owner of the WNBA’s Atlanta Dream. Loeffler would need to be confirmed by the Senate to lead the Small Business Administration. Linda McMahon, a major Republican donor and Trump’s pick to be the next education secretary , served as the administrator of the agency during Trump’s first term. She resigned in 2019 to become the chair of America First Action, a pro-Trump super PAC. This story has been updated with additional details.Kylian Mbappe , Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham all scored in the same match for the first time as Real Madrid secured a crucial three points by beating Atalanta BC 3-2 in the Champions League this evening. Los Blancos started the night just inside the knockout places in 24th, after a dismal start by their lofty standards, and earned just their third win of the league phase in a very tense encounter with the Serie A leaders. Mbappe looked lively early on, testing Atalanta keeper Marco Carnesecchi , before giving Carlo Ancelotti 's side the lead inside 10 minutes with a clinical finish, but he was then forced off with injury later in the opening period. Aurelien Tchouameni 's rash foul on Sead Kolasinac saw Atalanta equalise from the spot thanks to the in-form Charles De Ketelaere , but a quick-fire second-half double from Vini Jr and Bellingham seemed to put the game beyond Gian Piero Gasperini 's men. However, within five minutes, Ademola Lookman dragged La Dea back into the game again, making it 3-2 with over 25 minutes remaining, but despite heavy pressure on Thibaut Courtois 's goal the hosts could not find a dramatic leveller late on, with Mateo Retegui missing a glaring open goal in the final minute of injury time. That sees Atalanta's nine-game winning run come to an end, and it is also the first time since mid-September that they have suffered defeat in any competition. Atalanta drop out of the top eight with tonight's defeat, seeing Bayern Munich, Brest and Aston Villa all overtake them, while Real Madrid are up to 17th with nine points from their six games so far, but those placing are set to change following Wednesday's fixtures. Carnesecchi has denied him once, but he was helpless to this one, as Mbappe gives Real Madrid an early lead thanks to a fabulous first touch beyond Marten de Roon and a powerful low strike with the laces beyond the La Dea goalkeeper. With Mbappe now off the field, Atalanta are also level! Tchouameni's trip on Kolasinac sees Szymon Marciniak point to the spot, and De Ketelaere steps up and buries it into the top corner, racking up his seventh goal involvement in the Champions League already. A huge stroke of good fortune helps Real to retake the lead in Bergamo and it is Vini Jr with his first shot of the evening. An attempt to clear ricochets off Ederson and inadvertently plays the Brazilian attacker through, and he shows fine composure to beat Carnesecchi in the Atalanta goal. And in the blink of an eye Real double their lead! Vini Jr's long ball in behind is latched onto by Bellingham, and Los Blancos's number five side-steps De Roon and fires beyond Carnesecchi, who may think he could have done better with an effort that was rather central. It is the perfect response for Atalanta! Lookman takes on Lucas Vazquez and fires towards Courtois's near post, catching the big Belgian out and bringing the hosts back into the game, and the Nerazzurri are keen to get play going again! After going 12 games without a goal in the Champions League, Bellingham looked back to the player he was early last season, influencing play in all areas of the pitch, and his superb footwork ultimately led to the third and all-important goal for a crucial Real win. Possession: Atalanta 55%-45% Real Madrid Shots: Atalanta 20-10 Real Madrid Shots on target: Atalanta 9-6 Real Madrid Corners: Atalanta 5-2 Real Madrid Fouls: Atalanta 15-13 Real Madrid Serie A leaders Atalanta travel to Sardinia to face Cagliari on Saturday, while Real Madrid will look to overtake Barcelona at the top of La Liga for a short time at least when they make the short trip to Rayo Vallecano later the same day.
