NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stock indexes are drifting lower Tuesday in the runup to the highlight of the week for the market, the latest update on inflation that’s coming on Wednesday. The S&P 500 dipped by 0.2% in late trading, a day after pulling back from its latest all-time high . The index is on track for its first back-to-back losses in more than three weeks, as momentum slows following a big rally that has it on track for one of its best years of the millennium . The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down by 7 points, or less than 0.1%, with roughly an hour remaining in trading, and the Nasdaq composite fell 0.3%. Tech titan Oracle dragged on the market and sank 7.8% after reporting growth for the latest quarter that fell just short of analysts’ expectations. It was one of the heaviest weights on the S&P 500, even though CEO Safra Catz said the company saw record demand related to artificial-intelligence technology for its cloud infrastructure business, which trains generative AI models. AI has been a big source of growth that’s helped many companies’ stock prices skyrocket. Oracle’s stock had already leaped nearly 81% for the year coming into Tuesday, which raised the bar of expectations for its profit report. C3.ai fell 2.1% despite reporting a smaller loss for the latest quarter than analysts expected. The AI software company increased its forecast for how big a loss it expects to take this fiscal year from its operations. In the bond market, Treasury yields ticked higher ahead of Wednesday’s report on the inflation that U.S. consumers are feeling. Economists expect it to show roughly similar increases as the month before. That and a report on Thursday about inflation at the wholesale level will be the final big pieces of data the Federal Reserve will get before its meeting next week, where many investors expect the year’s third cut to interest rates . The Fed has been easing its main interest rate from a two-decade high since September to lift the slowing jobs market, after bringing inflation nearly down to its 2% target. Lower rates would help give support to the economy, but they could also provide more fuel for inflation. The yield on the 10-year Treasury rose to 4.22% from 4.20% late Monday. Even though the Fed has been cutting its main interest rate, mortgage rates have been more stubborn and have been volatile since the autumn. That has hampered the housing industry, and homebuilder Toll Brothers’ stock fell 5.2% even though it beat analysts’ expectations for profit and revenue in the latest quarter. CEO Douglas Yearley Jr. said the luxury builder has been seeing strong demand since the start of its fiscal year six weeks ago, an encouraging signal as it approaches the beginning of the spring selling season in mid-January Elsewhere on Wall Street, Alaska Air Group soared 13.6% after raising its forecast for profit in the current quarter. The airline said demand for flying around the holidays has been stronger than expected. It also approved a plan to buy back up to $1 billion of its stock, along with new service from Seattle to Tokyo and Seoul . Boeing climbed 5.2% after saying it's resuming production of its bestselling plane , the 737 Max, for the first time since 33,000 workers began a seven-week strike that ended in early November. Vail Resorts rose 2.7% after the ski resort operator reported a narrower first-quarter loss than expected in what is traditionally its worst quarter. In stock markets abroad, indexes were mixed in China after the world’s second-largest economy said its exports rose by less than expected in November. Stocks rose 0.6% in Shanghai but fell 0.5% in Hong Kong. AP Business Writers Matt Ott and Elaine Kurtenbach contributed.5 Best Car Launches In November 2024

From the opening whistle, Liverpool looked sharp and focused, with their high-intensity pressing and fluid attacking play causing havoc for the Girona defense. The first goal came in the 15th minute, as Sadio Mane latched onto a pinpoint cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold to head home with precision. This early goal set the tone for the rest of the match, as Liverpool continued to dominate possession and create scoring opportunities at will.

Chicago Blackhawks forward Connor Bedard said he "could name 100 things" he could do better amid his slow start to the 2024-25 season. "I don't know, man," Bedard said Friday, per ESPN's Greg Wyshynski . "It has been frustrating, for sure. I just don't feel like I'm really doing anything. So just keep chipping away at it, I guess, and hopefully find my game again." Bedard continued: "It's been a tough stretch. You just feel like you don't have it or whatever, and you lose a bit of confidence. And it just kind of goes on." After leading all rookies with 22 goals in 68 games last season, Bedard has been held to three goals in the first 20 games of his sophomore campaign. Alberta will test new technologies in an effort to use less water during energy production by oil and gas companies. The provincial government announced Monday it’s investing $2.7 million from the industry-funded Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) program for three new projects. One of said projects is in Three Hills, southeast of Red Deer. “Global energy demand is rising and jurisdictions around the world are looking to us for ways to grow production while maximizing water efficiency,” says Rebecca Schulz, environment and protected areas minister. “This funding will help test and advance three new technologies designed to help companies reduce water use and increase energy production at the same time. It’s a win for the environment, the energy sector and the economy.” The project at Three Hills will be operated by Aqua Pure Technologies, utilizing innovative ultra-filtration technology known as PROH2O®. The tech can remove 99.9 per cent of contaminants from water, the company claims. “The significant financial backing received from the Government of Alberta and Emissions Reduction Alberta will accelerate the progress and commercialization of Aqua Pure Technologies’ PROH2O® Technology,” says Daniel Nelson, CEO, Aqua Pure. “This funding is crucial for improving the company’s ability to deliver clean technology developed in Alberta to both domestic and global markets while highlighting Alberta’s leadership in oil and gas water reuse and emissions reduction initiatives.” Funding will support a self-cleaning system, will reduce costs, and improve productivity. The other two projects are as follows: Eximius Environmental Solutions will advance its VelRay XTM system, which filters tiny particles from water used in oil extraction, making it cleaner for reuse and reducing the need for freshwater. Cleaner water prevents blockages, protects equipment, extends its life, lowers pollution risks, and cuts wastewater disposal costs. The system uses durable stainless-steel filters instead of emissions-intensive bag filters, reducing waste and landfill emissions. Test sites will be announced soon. Canadian Natural Resources Limited is using $1.2 million in provincial funding to test a chemical additive that improves the flow of heavy oil and bitumen in its steam-assisted gravity drainage operations. The additive helps oil flow faster, prevents blockages, and reduces the need for steam, thereby lowering water use. Testing will occur at the Kirby North plant in Lac La Biche. The Government of Alberta says oil and gas operators have already reduced water use by 25 per cent, and now recycle about 80 per cent of water used — accomplished by using advanced filtration systems to treat wastewater, and thereby reducing the need for freshwater. Moreover, the government will establish a centralized information-sharing platform to facilitate the exchange of data and information among regulatory agencies, procurement authorities, and healthcare providers. By promoting greater transparency and collaboration, the government aims to strengthen coordination and communication across different stakeholders involved in the procurement process. This information-sharing platform will enable more effective monitoring and oversight of the entire supply chain, from procurement to distribution to end-use.
