The company, which has approximately 9,400 employees in Minnesota, highlighted the risks of developing an atrioesophageal fistula, a rare and often fatal complication resulting from injury to the esophagus during cryoablation procedures using POLARx and POLARx FIT catheters, which are thin, tubular devices physicians can advance to the heart through blood vessels. During a cryoablation procedure, a balloon expands inside the pulmonary vein, using extreme cold to freeze tissue that transmits the signals that cause the heart to quiver in atrial fibrillation. Seven reports of injuries and four fatalities are linked to the catheters. The FDA has classified the instruction change as a Class I recall, the most serious type, reserved for situations when there’s a reasonable chance that using a device without following updated instructions would lead to serious health problems or death. The recall does not require doctors to stop using the catheters — existing inventory can be used with the new instructions, Boston Scientific said. Patients who have already had a procedure using one of the affected catheters don’t need to take any action. The Heart Rhythm Society said in a safety alert that the POLARx system, commercially introduced in 2020, has been used in about 69,000 cases worldwide, citing the company’s data. The society urged its members using the system to read and follow the company’s instructions. “At present, there is no indication that their system is not safe and effective, if used in accordance with the instructions for use,” the society’s alert to doctors said. Cryoablation and radiofrequency ablation, another AFib procedure cauterizing tissue around the pulmonary vein point by point, present a risk that doctors can inadvertently damage other organs like the esophagus, doctors say. Pulsed field ablation—which uses a high voltage impulse to create pores in cells in the area surrounding the pulmonary vein—presents a smaller chance that the procedure affects adjacent organs, they say. Boston Scientific and other medical technology are racing to commercialize this new technology.
CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- A 22-year-old social media influencer on TikTok with nearly 300,000 followers has been arrested after using fake barcodes to steal from Target and filming herself getting ready before the alleged theft, police say. The Cape Coral Police Department in Florida responded to a Target branch located at 1890 NE Pine Island Road in Cape Coral last Wednesday regarding a past retail theft that occurred on Oct. 30, according to a statement from the Cape Coral Police Department. "Loss Prevention at Target stated that on October 30, 2024, an unknown female entered the store and selected items listed for sale," police said. "Once at the self-checkout register, the female suspect did not scan the items' barcodes, instead scanning a false barcode with cheaper prices." In total, 16 items of miscellaneous household goods and clothing were stolen with a total retail value of $500.32, which was verified by officers via Target's security cameras. In an attempt to help identify the suspect through public assistance, the Cape Coral Police Department's Facebook and Instagram accounts posted the female's picture, describing her as appearing to be "approximately 20-35 years old, had long black hair, and was wearing a tan shirt, tan pants, and glasses." An anonymous caller who saw the post on social media subsequently contacted the police and gave the possible identification for the suspect as Marlena Velez and informed them of her social media profiles. "Officers then found Marlena's TikTok account, which documents her getting ready on October 30, 2024, in the same outfit and glasses and going to Target," police said. "Marlena documents herself picking out items inside the store and placing them in her car after exiting the store. Marlena appears to be a content creator with almost 300,000 followers." Velez has since been arrested and taken to the Lee County Jail and charged with petit theft of less than $750. The investigation is currently ongoing.Americans are more optimistic about 2025 than they were about 2024 — in large part because of President-elect Donald Trump, according to new polling. In a December CBS News/YouGov poll, 57% of respondents said that, when looking ahead to 2025, they feel more hopeful than discouraged . Meanwhile, 23% said they feel more discouraged, and 20% said they feel both equally. In contrast, a poll taken during December 2023 found that 47% of respondents were hopeful about 2024 — marking a 10-point difference. An additional 22% said they were discouraged, and 31% said they felt both equally. The latest poll — fielded between Dec. 18-20 with a sample of 2,244 adults — asked the hopeful respondents what makes them feel mostly optimistic about the new year. It provided them with seven options. Sixty percent said “Trump becoming president” made them feel mostly hopeful, making it the most popular choice. Following that, 55% said family and personal relationships, 51% said personal finances and opportunities, and 51% said the U.S. economy, according to the poll, which has a margin of error of 2.4 percentage points. Slightly less than half, 47%, said personal health, 34% said American politics generally and 33% said “the state of the world.” The poll, using the same seven choices, then asked the discouraged respondents what makes them feel mostly pessimistic about 2025. The vast majority, 85%, said Trump becoming president made them mostly disheartened, again making it the most popular choice. Meanwhile, 74% said American politics generally, 71% said the state of the world and 58% said the American economy. Less than half, 46%, said personal finances and opportunities, while 28% said personal health, and 17% said family and personal relationships. The responses were largely skewed based on partisan affiliation, with 85% of Republicans saying they feel hopeful and 38% of Democrats saying the same.Thanksgiving Weekend Sports Guide: Your roadmap to NFL matchups, other games, times, oddsbluebird bio ( NASDAQ: BLUE ) announced that it will proceed with a 1-for-20 reverse stock split.
