The world stands at the dawn of a “third nuclear age” in which Britain is threatened by multiple dilemmas, the head of the armed forces has warned. But alongside his stark warning of the threats facing Britain and its allies, Admiral Sir Tony Radakin said there would be only a “remote chance” Russia would directly attack or invade the UK if the two countries were at war. The Chief of the Defence Staff laid out the landscape of British defence in a wide-ranging speech, after a minister warned the Army would be wiped out in as little as six months if forced to fight a war on the scale of the Ukraine conflict. The admiral cast doubt on the possibility as he gave a speech at the Royal United Services Institute (Rusi) defence think tank in London. He told the audience Britain needed to be “clear-eyed in our assessment” of the threats it faces, adding: “That includes recognising that there is only a remote chance of a significant direct attack or invasion by Russia on the United Kingdom, and that’s the same for the whole of Nato.” Moscow “knows the response will be overwhelming”, he added, but warned the nuclear deterrent needed to be “kept strong and strengthened”. Sir Tony added: “We are at the dawn of a third nuclear age, which is altogether more complex. It is defined by multiple and concurrent dilemmas, proliferating nuclear and disruptive technologies and the almost total absence of the security architectures that went before.” The first nuclear age was the Cold War, while the second was “governed by disarmament efforts and counter proliferation”, the armed forces chief said. He listed the “wild threats of tactical nuclear use” by Russia, China building up its weapon stocks, Iran’s failure to co-operate with a nuclear deal, and North Korea’s “erratic behaviour” among the threats faced by the West. But Sir Tony said the UK’s nuclear arsenal is “the one part of our inventory of which Russia is most aware and has more impact on (President Vladimir) Putin than anything else”. Successive British governments had invested “substantial sums of money” in renewing nuclear submarines and warheads because of this, he added. The admiral described the deployment of thousands of North Korean soldiers on Ukraine’s border alongside Russian forces as the year’s “most extraordinary development”. He also signalled further deployments were possible, speaking of “tens of thousands more to follow as part of a new security pact with Russia”. Defence minister Alistair Carns earlier said a rate of casualties similar to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine would lead to the army being “expended” within six to 12 months. He said it illustrated the need to “generate depth and mass rapidly in the event of a crisis”. In comments reported by Sky News, Mr Carns, a former Royal Marines colonel, said Russia was suffering losses of around 1,500 soldiers killed or injured a day. “In a war of scale – not a limited intervention, but one similar to Ukraine – our Army for example, on the current casualty rates, would be expended – as part of a broader multinational coalition – in six months to a year,” Mr Carns said in a speech at Rusi. He added: “That doesn’t mean we need a bigger Army, but it does mean you need to generate depth and mass rapidly in the event of a crisis.” Official figures show the Army had 109,245 personnel on October 1, including 25,814 volunteer reservists. Mr Carns, the minister for veterans and people, said the UK needed to “catch up with Nato allies” to place greater emphasis on the reserves. Behaviour conditioning “One of the main reasons is the environmental triggers we’re exposed to during winter,” explains Rosie Carr, dietitian at healthy eating plan Second Nature. “Over many years, we may have built associations in our brains between certain situations and food or drink, like coming home from a cold walk and having a hot chocolate with marshmallows. “Repeating this behaviour will mean our brains crave sugar after walking in cold weather – and this is known as ‘Pavlovian conditioning’ and can be applied to many other environmental, social, and behavioural cues that lead to cravings.” Credits: PA; Biological influence Dopamine, also known as the feel-good hormone, plays a central role in maintaining this craving cycle and reinforcing these behaviours. “The process is regulated by the neurotransmitter dopamine, which is involved in motivation and reward,” explains Carr. “When dopamine is triggered (like when we have a hot chocolate, for example), dopamine is released to instruct the brain to repeat this behaviour.” Some researchers have also suggested a possible link between cold exposure and the hunger hormone ghrelin. “A study conducted on healthy men showed that our ghrelin levels rise when we’re exposed to colder temperatures,” notes Carr. Evolutionary influence “For our ancestors, winter meant many months of harsh conditions that made survival more challenging,” explains Carr. “There may have also been less food to hunt and gather. “So, the colder temperatures may signal to our hunter-gatherer brains to consume more energy-dense foods, lay down fat, and increase our survival chances.” What impact does sugary foods have on our body? “Foods that contain added sugar typically fall under the category of ultra-processed foods, such as cereals, pastries, biscuits, crisps, and other convenience foods like microwave meals,” highlights Carr. “These foods bypass our hunger-regulation network, and research has shown they lead to weight gain.” They’re also more likely to increase our blood sugar levels sharply. “When our blood sugar levels rise above our body’s ideal range, it triggers the release of large insulin levels to bring these levels back to normal,” explains the dietitian. “Unfortunately, this excess release of insulin can then lead to blood sugar crashes, which triggers the release of the stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline to try and avoid hypoglycemia. “This blood sugar rollercoaster can significantly impact our energy levels, brain function, and ability to perform professionally and socially.” What can we do to manage these cravings? Drink plenty of water “If you’re experiencing intense cravings, it’s extremely important that you try to drink plenty of fluids,” says Emma Thornton, nutritionist at A.Vogel. “Not only does this ensure that you can metabolise glycogen, increasing your energy levels, it also means that you can maintain a good balance of electrolytes. “You should be aiming to drink 8-10 glasses of water a day – and this means plain water, not carbonated water or caffeinated drinks.” Credits: PA; Limit consumption of sugary foods “I recommend planning your meals ahead of time and sticking to your shopping list,” advises Carr. “This will ensure you’re limiting the consumption of ultra-processed foods and cooking your meals from fresh ingredients. “If we eat whole foods most of the time, we can enjoy the odd dessert mindfully and without guilt.” Reduce your stress levels “Stress can be disastrous when it comes to encouraging sugar cravings so this is naturally an issue you will want to address,” highlights Thornton. “When it comes to difficult emotions like stress and anxiety, we usually recommend tackling them at the root cause – but this might not always be possible, in which case you may need to think about how to manage your symptoms. “Keeping active, eating the right foods and practicing mindful exercises such as meditation can be great tools to help you here.” Try the urge surfing technique “Ride the wave of the craving for 15 minutes and do something else during this time, like going for a walk or making herbal tea,” recommends Carr. “If you’re still craving something sweet, try swapping in a healthier option like apple and peanut butter, or Greek yoghurt with berries.”

Fortnite UGC studio Creator Corp announced today that it had received a $2 million investment from new venture fund Lumina. The fund’s creators, Thomas Benski and Marisa Clifford, both expressed enthusiasm for Creator Corp’s mission to build out its portfolio of UEFN titles made in collaboration with influencers and popular IP. Creator Corp’s library of existing titles includes Steph Curry’s Run the Ring, US Open Tennis Storm, Dude Perfect Dodgeball and Bugha’s End Game, which have a combined total of over 220 million active users. The studio says it plans to use Lumina’s investment to build its development portfolio with more games to reach new audiences while maximizing community engagement. Kavitha was speaking after visiting the hospitalised students at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad. She expressed sadness and disappointment on seeing children in a vegetative state on ventilator support, despite being hospitalised for two weeks. Targeting the Congress-run state government, Kavitha alleged that so far, 42 students have lost their lives from food poisoning in government schools. Stressing the need for governmental intervention, Kavitha urged chief minister Revanth Reddy to personally review the food quality in various gurukul and ashram schools. “Gurukul schools provide education to children, hailing from Dalit and minority families, in the state. The chief minister should ensure quality food is provided at the schools,” she said. On October 31, 60 students from Wankidi tribal welfare school in Asifabad were hospitalized due to food poison from mid-day meals. Among them, two female tribal students Jyothika of Class 7 and Mahalaxmi of Class 6 were taken to a private hospital in Mancherial after their condition worsened. As their condition further deteriorated, doctors referred them to NIMS hospital in Hyderabad. Based on their instructions, the district deputy director of the Tribal Welfare department shifted them to Hyderabad, where they remain critical.

Greg Abbott has issued two more executive orders targeting Chinese Communist Party (CCP) influence in his state , after announcing an initial order on Nov. 18 aimed at protecting local dissidents from the Chinese regime’s harassment. Abbott signed Executive Order No. GA-49 on Nov. 20 to safeguard critical infrastructure from cyberattacks and issued Executive Order No. GA-48 on Nov. 19 to protect Texans from the CCP’s espionage operations. Executive Order No. GA-49 directs the Texas Division of Emergency Management and the Public Utility Commission of Texas to prepare for any potential cyberattacks aimed at the state’s critical infrastructure. Under Abbott’s order, the two agencies will create a task force to study potential vulnerabilities within government systems and critical infrastructure, run response simulations to cyberattacks, and put together a committee of state agencies to “simulate a restart of Texas’ electric grid in the event of a foreign attack,” according to a Wednesday statement. “ China has made it clear that they can—and will—target and attack America’s critical infrastructure ,” Abbott said in the statement. “Texas will continue to protect our critical infrastructure to ensure the safety of Texans from potential threats by the Chinese Communist Party or any hostile foreign government.” The order highlighted Volt Typhoon, one of China’s state-sponsored threat groups, and how it had targeted communications, energy, transportation, water, and wastewater systems in the United States and its territories. Volt Typhoon, which was dismantled by a multi-agency operation in January, had maintained “access and footholds within some victim IT environments for at least five years,” the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency said in February. The order also cited FBI Director Christopher Wray’s warnings at the Vanderbilt Summit in Nashville in April, when he said that China “has made it clear that it considers every sector that makes our society run as fair game in its bid to dominate on the world stage.” Executive Order No. GA-48 directs all state agencies and public institutions of higher education to “harden” their systems from potential infiltration by hostile nations, including more thorough background checks on state employees and contractors who can access critical infrastructure. Additionally, state agencies will be banned from contracting “companies owned or controlled by a foreign adversary government , and bidding companies must prove that “none of its holding companies or subsidiaries is owned by a foreign adversary government,” according to a Tuesday statement. Faculty members of higher education institutions are banned from taking part in “any foreign recruitment program by a foreign adversary nation,” such as China’s Thousand Talents Program, according to the statement. The Thousand Talents Program is one of many talent recruitment initiatives the Chinese regime has maintained for decades to attract overseas Chinese and foreign experts to work in China’s science and tech sectors. Through these programs, the CCP hopes to quickly turn China into an industrial and innovation powerhouse and ultimately outperform Western countries. The FBI warns on its website that Chinese talent programs pose threats to U.S. national security and usually involve “undisclosed and illegal transfers” of U.S. intellectual property to the Chinese side. “The Federal Bureau of Investigation reported that the Chinese government has actively targeted local and state officials as part of their strategy to undermine the national security of the United States,” Abbott said in a statement. “Hardening our state government is critical to protect Texans from hostile foreign actors who may attempt to undermine the safety and security of Texas and the nation.” As an example of the CCP’s infiltration, Abbott’s order pointed to the recent indictment against Linda Sun, former deputy chief of staff to New York Gov. Kathy Hochul. Sun was charged with spying for Beijing. Another name mentioned in the order is Christine Fang , a suspected Chinese intelligence agent who Abbott’s office said “developed deep connections” with California’s political figures and national politicians. On Monday, when Abbott announced Executive Order No. GA-47, the FBI’s field office in Houston took to the social media platform X to urge victims to come forward. “The government of the [People’s] Republic of China (PRC) may be cyberstalking, physically intimidating, and harassing Chinese citizens, naturalized U.S. citizens, and families of dissidents who speak [out] against the Chinese Communist Party in Texas,” the office wrote. Under Abbott’s order , the Texas Department of Public Safety will target and arrest any individual found to be engaging in CCP influence operations within the state. Washington-based advocacy group Campaign for Uyghurs took to X on Monday to applaud the governor’s decision, saying that CCP continues to carry out its “nefarious practice” of transnational repression in Texas. An example of Beijing’s transnational repression came to light in April last year, when two Chinese nationals were charged with allegedly establishing a secret police station in Manhattan in coordination with China’s Ministry of Public Security. The scheme helped Mahayuti recover from its poor showing in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. 2024 Jharkhand: JMM-Congress' Vote Share Shot Up By 8% Similar to Maharashtra's Mahayuti, Jharkhand's JMM-Congress government also launched Mukhyamantri Maiya Samman Yojana in August 2024. The scheme gave Rs 1000 to women between ages 21 and 50 years, whose family income is less than ₹ 3 lakhs annually. The scheme had over 40 lakh women beneficiaries. Besides saving the INDIA government from getting beaten by the BJP, the scheme gave Hemant Soren a bigger mandate than the 2019 Assembly polls. JMM-Congress alliance's vote share shot from 35.35% to 44.33%, a massive jump of 8%. COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Will Howard passed for two touchdowns and rushed for another, TreVeyon Henderson ran for a score and No. 2 Ohio State beat previously undefeated No. 5 Indiana 38-15 on Saturday. All Ohio State (10-1, 7-1 Big Ten, CFP No. 2) has to do now is beat Michigan at home next Saturday and it will earn a return to the Big Ten championship game for the first time since 2020 and get a rematch with No. 1 Oregon. The Ducks beat Ohio State 32-31 in a wild one back on Oct. 12. The Hoosiers (10-1, 7-1, No. 5 CFP) had their best chance to beat the Buckeyes for the first time since 1988 but were hurt by special teams mistakes and disrupted by an Ohio State defense that sacked quarterback Kurtis Rourke five times. “In life, all good things come to an end,” Indiana coach Curt Cignetti said. Late in the first half, Indiana punter James Evans fumbled a snap and was buried at his own 7-yardline with the Buckeyes taking over. That turned quickly into a 4-yard TD run by Henderson that gave the Buckeyes a 14-7 lead. Early in the second half, Caleb Downs fielded an Evans punt at the Ohio State 21, raced down the right sideline, cut to the middle and outran the coverage for a TD that put the Buckeyes up 21-7. It was the first time a Buckeye returned a punt for a touchdown since 2014. Howard finished 22 for 26 for 201 yards. Emeka Egbuka had seven catches for 80 yards and a TD. “Our guys just played with a chip today, and that’s the way you got to play the game of football,” Ohio State coach Ryan Day said. Indiana scored on its first possession of the game and its last, both short runs by Ty Son Lawson, who paced the Hoosiers with 79 rushing yards. Rourke was 8 for 18 for 68 yards. “We had communication errors, pass (protection), every time we dropped back to pass, something bad happened," Cignetti said. Indiana's 151 total yards was its lowest of the season. And it was the most points surrendered by the Hoosier's defense. Indiana: Its special season was blemished by the Buckeyes, who beat the Hoosiers for the 30th straight time. Indiana was eyeing its first conference crown since sharing one with two other teams in 1967. That won't happen now. “Ohio State deserved to win,” Cignetti said. “They had those (third quarter scores), and we just couldn’t respond.” Ohio State: Didn't waste the opportunities presented by the Hoosiers when they got sloppy. The Buckeyes led 14-7 at the break and took control in the second half. An offensive line patched together because of multiple injuries performed surprisingly well. “We know what was at stake," Day said. “We don't win this game, and we have no chance to go to Indianapolis and play in the Big Ten championship. And that's real. We've had that approach for the last few weeks now, more than that.” Some voters were obviously unsure of Indiana because it hadn't played a nationally ranked team before Ohio State. After this one, the Hoosiers will drop. Howard made history by completing 80% of his passes for the sixth time this season. No other Ohio State quarterback has done that. He completed his first 14 passes in a row and finished with a 85% completion rate. “I think Buckeye nation is now seeing, after 11 games, that this guy is a winner, he's tough, he cares about his teammates, he's a leader,” Day said.
