Dejan Kulusevski cannot wait for the opportunity to play against Manchester City again after Tottenham ran riot at the Etihad Stadium. The Sweden midfielder hailed Saturday’s 4-0 thrashing of the champions as the best game of his career. The 24-year-old delivered an outstanding performance as Spurs shattered the champions’ 52-game unbeaten home run, helping start the rout with a superb cross for James Maddison’s opening goal. Kulusevski said: “I believed (we would win) this because in the past years, we’ve come here and played really well. “So this is the game I look forward to most in the year and, once again, it happened – glory to God. “I’d say it’s the best result ever in my career. It’s a big night for the whole club, for the coach, for the players. “Because City have a lot of the ball sometimes, we can rest when we defend. There’s also so much space up there, we play one against one and then it’s always dangerous because we have a lot of quality. “It’s always great to play great teams because they always want to play football. When you play lower teams, sometimes it’s not. There’s not much football played because they are a lot of fouls, a lot of injuries and it’s slow going.” Maddison stole the show with two goals in quick succession in the first half while Pedro Porro and Brennan Johnson later got on the scoresheet. Yet Kulusevski’s performance was also eye-catching and the player himself believes there is plenty more to come from him. Asked if his form made him feel “unstoppable”, Kulusevski said: “I feel like that. I feel very good and I’m trying to keep this way. I’m very happy, I’m trying to improve. “I started the season good but there is over half of the season left and I hope I can do much better. “I think I have something that no other player has. With my engine, with my heart – I don’t get tired – I feel like I can do a lot still in my career.” Tottenham’s scintillating performance marked a spectacular return to form after their dismal loss to Ipswich in their previous Premier League outing. Kulusevski said: “We have to be much more consistent. It’s not a turning point. 'Kick in the guts': Government blasts CBA over $3 withdrawal feeLisa Simpson once said during an episode of “The Simpsons:” What could be more exciting than the savage ballet that is pro football? On Monday night, the entire Simpsons universe gets to experience it in a way not many could have imagined. The prime-time matchup between the Cincinnati Bengals and Dallas Cowboys will also take place at Springfield’s Atoms Stadium as part of “The Simpsons Funday Football” alternate broadcast. The altcast will be streamed on ESPN+, Disney+, and NFL+ (on mobile devices). ESPN and ABC have the main broadcast, while ESPN2 will carry the final “ManningCast” of the regular season. The replay will be available on Disney+ for 30 days. Globally, more than 145 countries will have access to either live or on replay. “We’re such huge football fans, and the Simpsons audience and the football audience, I feel, are like the same audience of just American families and football. And the Simpsons are so much a part of the DNA of the American family and culture that for us to, like, mush them together in this crazy video game, it’s so fun,” said Matt Selman, executive producer of “The Simpsons.” While the game is the focal point, the alternate broadcast, in some ways, will resemble a three-hour episode of “The Simpsons.” It starts with Homer eating too many hot dogs and having a dream while watching football. Homer joins the Cowboys in the dream while Bart teams up with the Bengals. Lisa and Marge will be sideline reporters. “That’s the beginning of the story, and the story continues through the entire game until Homer wakes up from his dream at the end of the game. It is like a complete story, and the NFL game will happen in between. It’s just going to be an amazing presentation with tons of surprises,” said Michael “Spike” Szykowny, ESPN’s VP of edit and animation. This is the second year ESPN has done an alternate broadcast for an NFL game. It used the characters from “Toy Story” for last year’s Sunday morning game from London between the Atlanta Falcons and Jacksonville Jaguars. “The Simpsons” has featured many sports-themed episodes during its 35 seasons. Even though “Homer at the Bat” remains the consensus favorite sports episode for many Simpsons fans, there have been football ones such as “Bart Star” and “Lisa The Greek.” There also was a Super Bowl-themed one after Fox’s broadcast of Super Bowl 33 between Denver and Atlanta in 1999. Even though “The Simpsons” remains a staple on Fox’s prime-time schedule, it is part of the Disney family after their acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019. All 35 seasons are on Disney+. The show’s creators have worked with ESPN and the NFL to make sure the look and sound is definitely Simpsonsesque. The theme song is a mash-up of “The Simpsons” opening and “Monday Night Football’s” iconic “Heavy Action.” There have also been pre-recorded skits and bits to use during the broadcast featuring Simpson’s legendary voices Hank Azaria, Nancy Cartwright, Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, and Yeardley Smith. The telecast will be entirely animated, with the players’ movements in sync with what is happening in real-time on the field. That is done through player-tracking data enabled by the NFL’s Next Gen Stats system and Sony’s Beyond Sports Technology. While Next Gen Stats tracks where players are on the field with a tracking chip in the shoulder pads, there is skeletal data tracking and limb tracking data — which uses 29 points per player — to get closer to the player’s movements. The other data tracking will allow Beyond Sports and Disney to add special characters to the game. For example, there might be a play where Lisa catches the ball and goes 30 yards instead of Cincinnati’s Tee Higgins. “Lisa is much smaller than the rest of the players. So, in real life, the ball would go over her head, but now, with data processing, we can take the ball and make it go exactly into her hands. So for the viewer, it still looks believable, and it all makes sense,” said Beyond Sports co-founder Nicolaas Westerhof. The other major challenge is making “The Simpsons” two-dimensional cartoon characters into 3-D simulations. Szykowny and his team worked to make that a reality over the past couple of months. “That’s a big leap of faith for them to say, hey, we trust you to make our characters 3-D and work with it. Our ESPN creative studio team has done a wonderful job,” Szykowny said. Lisa, Krusty, Nelson, Milhouse and Ralph will be with Bart and the Bengals; while Carl, Barney, Lenny and Moe join up with with Homer and the Cowboys. The broadcast will also feature ESPN personalities Stephen A. Smith, Peyton Manning and Eli Manning. ESPN’s Drew Carter, Mina Kimes and Dan Orlovsky will call the game from Bristol, Connecticut, and also be animated. They will wear Meta Quest Pro headsets to experience the game from Springfield using VR technology. For Kimes, being part of the broadcast and being an animated Simpsons character is a dream come true. She is a massive fan of the show and has a framed photo of Lisa Simpson — who she said is a personal hero and icon — as part of her backdrop when she makes appearances on ESPN NFL shows from her home in Los Angeles. “I didn’t have any input, and I didn’t see anything beforehand, so I wasn’t sure if it would look like me, but it kind of does, which is very funny,” said Kimes, who drew Simpsons characters when she was a kid. “To see the actual staff turn me into one was a dream.” Even though the Bengals (4-8) and Cowboys (5-7) have struggled this season, Selman thinks both teams have personalities that appeal to “The Simpsons” universe. “We were just so lucky also that the Cowboys are sort of like a Homer Simpson-type team, American team, and Mike McCarthy might be a Homer-type guy, one might imagine,” he said. ”And then you have Joe Burrow on the other side who is a cool young, spiky-haired, blonde bad boy -- he’s like Bart. And that fits our character archetypes so perfectly. “If Homer is mad at Bart and has a hot dog dream while watching ’Monday Night Football’, and then it’s basically McCarthy versus Burrow, Homer versus Bart, and that’s the simple father versus son strangling — Homer strangling Bart dynamic that has been part of the show for 35 years. It was a game filled with accomplishments and scoring as Utah continues to grow as a team. Here are some takeaways from Saturday afternoon’s win . A Big Day for Michael Kesselring Going into Saturday afternoon’s game, Michael Kesselring was set to play his 100th NHL game against the Sabres. However, it ended up being one of Kesselring’s best this season. Kesselring scored Utah’s first goal of the game with a strong shot from the blue line. His dominance continued as he fought a Sabres player and then later assisted on Nick Schmaltz’s game-winning goal, all of which cumulated in a Gordie Howe hat trick, the first one in Utah franchise history. It wasn’t just offensively where Kesselring shined in Saturday’s game. It was defensively too. He was able to keep the puck out of danger throughout the game and overall, impressed everyone on Utah including his head coach. “He did a great job,” said head coach André Tourigny. “Scored a big goal. He skated well, skated the puck out of trouble a few times. I like the fact that he did not try to complicate his game a lot.” In the absence of John Marino and Sean Durzi , Kesselring has really stepped up his game on the blue line. He has 14 points this season which is good enough for second on the team in defensemen scoring and he is also a plus-11, which leads the whole team. Despite the win, Kesselring knows his team can still do things a bit better. However, he liked how they played and how Utah was able to shut down the Sabres’ offense. “We’re tracking better, we’re managing the puck better,” Kesselring said. “We can still clean it up a little bit, but we did a good job today. We know they’re good off the rush, so we limited them pretty good and took advantage when we got chances.” With the blue line looking shaky a couple of times throughout this season for Utah due to injuries or other issues, the team has always been able to rely on Kesselring to anchor the defense with Mikhail Sergachev . Considering that two of their top four defensemen are currently out with injuries, it might’ve been a blessing in disguise for Utah as Kesselring has blossomed into a consistent top-four defenseman. André Tourigny Gets a Milestone Victory Tourigny started coaching this core back during the 2021-22 season. During that time, the Arizona Coyotes started an extensive rebuild that gutted the team. Fast forward to Tourigny’s fourth season and Utah is starting to form a competitive team that is slowly building towards being a playoff competitor. Throughout the lowest points of the rebuild, Tourigny was the one behind the bench, trying to get the best from his team. It took three straight seasons of being under .500 but with the 5-2 win over the Sabres on Saturday, Tourigny finally recorded his 100th NHL win, all with the Coyotes and Utah. In typical Tourigny fashion, he didn’t focus on his own achievements after the win. Instead, he talked about his team’s recent play and how Saturday’s win was a reward for Utah after playing some good hockey in the past 10 games. “For the last 10 games, I think we’re playing good hockey,” Tourigny said. “We don’t have the result all the time that we wish to have. Today, until the game was tight, I think we played rock solid. For the most part, I liked the way we played.” While it was a great game for a majority of players on Utah’s roster, it is a big win for the organization as well to get Tourigny’s 100th win. While the team is probably hoping his 200th win comes quicker, it’s a big achievement for this group who have played under Tourigny for the past couple of years, and for the head coach himself to get his 100th win, all with one organization. A Great Day for Utah’s Scoring The best part of Utah’s game on Saturday was their scoring. In total, 12 of Utah’s players registered a point. That includes Kesselring, Keller, Sergachev, Alex Kerfoot, Dylan Guenther, Jack McBain, Michael Carcone, Barrett Hayton, Kevin Stenlund, Logan Cooley, Olli Määttä, and last but certainly not least Schmaltz who scored his fourth goal in the past three games and has really exploded after breaking his 20-plus game scoring drought. This stat could be the biggest takeaway from Saturday’s game. Prior to this recent stretch of games, Utah really struggled with depth scoring . At times, it was just the second line of McBain, Cooley, and Guenther producing. At others, Utah’s offense didn’t show up at all. However, slowly but surely, the team’s entire offense has started to score. It was a strong game overall for Utah. There are still some things to work on but it was a complete effort by the whole team. “There were a lot of good things,” McBain said. “We’ve been talking a lot about game management. We wanted to make plays, wanted to be simple and I think we’re continuing to get better. Still a lot to work on but as a group I thought it was good.” Utah has returned to a .500 record, now sitting at 11-11-4. It inches them closer to the Edmonton Oilers and the Calgary Flames who both currently hold the two wild-card spots in the Western Conference. Utah won’t have to wait long to try to get closer to the two teams. They’ll play the Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday.
