Trump Cabinet picks, appointees targeted by bomb threats and swatting attacksSANTA CLARA, Calif. , Dec. 10, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Marvell Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: MRVL), a leader in data infrastructure semiconductor solutions, today announced that it has pioneered a new custom HBM compute architecture that enables XPUs to achieve greater compute and memory density. The new technology is available to all of its custom silicon customers to improve the performance, efficiency and TCO of their custom XPUs. Marvell is collaborating with its cloud customers and leading HBM manufacturers, Micron, Samsung Electronics, and SK hynix to define and develop custom HBM solutions for next-generation XPUs. HBM is a critical component integrated within the XPU using advanced 2.5D packaging technology and high-speed industry-standard interfaces. However, the scaling of XPUs is limited by the current standard interface-based architecture. The new Marvell custom HBM compute architecture introduces tailored interfaces to optimize performance, power, die size, and cost for specific XPU designs. This approach considers the compute silicon, HBM stacks, and packaging. By customizing the HBM memory subsystem, including the stack itself, Marvell is advancing customization in cloud data center infrastructure. Marvell is collaborating with major HBM makers to implement this new architecture and meet cloud data center operators' needs. The Marvell custom HBM compute architecture enhances XPUs by serializing and speeding up the I/O interfaces between its internal AI compute accelerator silicon dies and the HBM base dies. This results in greater performance and up to 70% lower interface power compared to standard HBM interfaces. The optimized interfaces also reduce the required silicon real estate in each die, allowing HBM support logic to be integrated onto the base die. These real-estate savings, up to 25%, can be used to enhance compute capabilities, add new features, and support up to 33% more HBM stacks, increasing memory capacity per XPU. These improvements boost XPU performance and power efficiency while lowering TCO for cloud operators. "The leading cloud data center operators have scaled with custom infrastructure. Enhancing XPUs by tailoring HBM for specific performance, power, and total cost of ownership is the latest step in a new paradigm in the way AI accelerators are designed and delivered," said Will Chu, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Custom, Compute and Storage Group at Marvell. "We're very grateful to work with leading memory designers to accelerate this revolution and, help cloud data center operators continue to scale their XPUs and infrastructure for the AI era." "Increased memory capacity and bandwidth will help cloud operators efficiently scale their infrastructure for the AI era," said Raj Narasimhan, senior vice president and general manager of Micron's Compute and Networking Business Unit. "Strategic collaborations focused on power efficiency, such as the one we have with Marvell, will build on Micron's industry-leading HBM power specs, and provide hyperscalers with a robust platform to deliver the capabilities and optimal performance required to scale AI." "Optimizing HBM for specific XPUs and software environments will greatly improve the performance of cloud operators' infrastructure and ensure efficient power use," said Harry Yoon , corporate executive vice president of Samsung Electronics and head of Americas products and solutions planning. "The advancement of AI depends on such focused efforts. We look forward to collaborating with Marvell, a leader in custom compute silicon innovation." "By collaborating with Marvell, we can help our customers produce a more optimized solution for their workloads and infrastructure," said Sunny Kang , VP of DRAM Technology, SK hynix America. "As one of the leading pioneers of HBM, we look forward to shaping this next evolutionary stage for the technology." "Custom XPUs deliver superior performance and performance per watt compared to merchant, general-purpose solutions for specific, cloud-unique workloads," said Patrick Moorhead , CEO and Founder of Moor Insights & Strategy. "Marvell, already a player in custom compute silicon, is already delivering tailored solutions to leading cloud companies. Their latest custom compute HBM architecture platform provides an additional lever to enhance the TCO for custom silicon. Through strategic collaboration with leading memory makers, Marvell is poised to empower cloud operators in scaling their XPUs and accelerated infrastructure, thereby paving the way for them to enable the future of AI." Four Canadian women honoured in World Rugby's Dream Teams of the Year

Four Canadian women honoured in World Rugby's Dream Teams of the YearUConn head coach Dan Hurley insists he's not overvaluing Wednesday night's game between his 25th-ranked Huskies and No. 15 Baylor in Storrs, Conn. Sure, it comes on the heels of the two-time reigning national champion Huskies (5-3) responding to losing all three games during the Maui Invitational with a blowout victory over Maryland Eastern Shore on Saturday. UConn, which had won 17 consecutive games entering the Maui tournament, fell 23 spots from No. 2 to nearly out of the Associated Press Top 25 poll released Monday. "I think it's such a long season and we're eight games in," Hurley said when asked about facing the Bears. "Our performance in Maui shocked the college basketball world and the sports world, and obviously a lot went on there." "I don't think it's a must-win game in Game Nine of the season, but it's an opportunity to play in Gampel (Pavilion), where we play great and are very comfortable, and we know we're gonna have a great crowd." "We also know we're playing a top-level team, so it's a big game for us and it's a big game for them." Wednesday's game signifies the start of a tough stretch in UConn's schedule. The Huskies will visit Texas on Sunday and challenge No. 7 Gonzaga in New York on Dec. 14 before beginning Big East play on Dec. 18 against Xavier, which fell from No. 22 to out of the poll on Monday. But let's go back to Saturday's 99-45 dismantling of the Hawks. Jaylin Stewart started in place of the injured Alex Karaban (head) and joined Liam McNeeley by scoring 16 points to put UConn back in the win column. More from this section Solo Ball contributed 12 points, Aidan Mahaney had 11 and Tarris Reed Jr. (10 points, 12 rebounds) and Jayden Ross (10 points, 10 rebounds) each recorded a double-double. "This experience they're getting, (Stewart), Jayden Ross, Solo Ball, these guys are going to keep getting better and better," Hurley said. "Jaylin Stewart has flashed. That Memphis game (in which he scored 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting), he flashed a lot in that one. "... These sophomores are just going to keep getting better and better. That's why I do think we do need the grace and support of our people here at UConn. Because they're going to be such different players in January and February." Coming off a split in the Bahamas, Baylor (5-2) bounced back from a 77-62 setback to then-No. 11 Tennessee on Nov. 22 with a decisive 91-60 victory over New Orleans last Wednesday. "I know we're all a little tired," Bears coach Scott Drew said. "Whenever you come back from the Bahamas and a trip like that, the first game, you can be playing in mud. And I think the guys did a pretty good job, for the most part." Jayden Nunn drained six of his seven 3-pointers in the first half and finished with a season-high 23 points to power Baylor past the Privateers. Robert Wright III scored 18 points, Jeremy Roach had 17 and Miami transfer Norchad Omier recorded his third consecutive double-double after finishing with 12 points and a season-high 13 rebounds. --Field Level MediaATLANTIC CITY, N.J. NoneSusan Walsh is Newfoundland and Labrador's Seniors' Advocate. She says the finding of a recent report into the wellbeing of seniors is a concerning revelation that deserves more attention. (Keira Mahoney/CBC) Newfoundland and Labrador's seniors' advocate is sounding the alarm with a new report that says the well-being of seniors in the province falls behind national averages in areas like health, finances and overall safety. "My main take away, really, was just how poorly that seniors are doing in Newfoundland and Labrador," Susan Walsh told reporters Tuesday morning. "We now have the data that clearly supports ... that in every situation seniors were falling behind the rest of the country." The 68-page report outlines senior well-being through six categories: physical and mental health, health care, finances, housing, transportation and safety. Walsh said people over the age of 65 now make up nearly a quarter of Newfoundland and Labrador's population, an increase of over 20 per cent since 2019. Seniors generally perceive their physical and mental health to be at or above national averages, she said, but data connected to the social determinants of health could paint a different picture. For example, the report says only 14 per cent of seniors in the province eat the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables, compared to 26 per cent nationally. Newfoundland and Labrador seniors also lag in statistics around their diet and exercise, Walsh said, and are eight percentage points behind the rest of Canada in having access to a regular health-care provider. "They are continuing to struggle in many of the social determinants of health. They are lagging their Canadian counterparts. They are not receiving the level of care and respect they deserve," Walsh said. There are other concerning figures that show themselves in health-care statistics, she said. The percentage of completed hip and knee replacement surgeries that meet national benchmarks is well below the national average. WATCH | Seniors in N.L. have the lowest median income in Canada : Seniors’ median income in N.L. is lowest in Canada, says advocate in first report 4 hours ago Duration 1:06 In her first report on how seniors are doing on key issues, Newfoundland and Labrador Seniors’ Advocate Susan Walsh says money is scarce as people age, especially compared to other jurisdictions. Newfoundland and Labrador is also more than double the national average in its usage of restraints and the potentially inappropriate use of antipsychotic drugs in care — with the highest usage in the Labrador-Grenfell health zone. "Often times, that's tied to [limits] or challenges around resources on units," Walsh said. "What was most concerning to me inside of that was the difference regionally, and I think we need to get inside of that and determine why." The report also shines a light on the finances seniors rely on. Walsh said seniors in Newfoundland and Labrador have the lowest median income in Canada at just $27,800. Seniors in the province also avail of Canada's Guaranteed Income Supplement more than anywhere else in the country, she said. "To put that into perspective, more than half of the seniors in this province have an income that is less than a full-time salary on minimum wage, which is approximately $32,000," she said. "The percentage of seniors in Newfoundland and Labrador receiving [GIS] is concerning, as it certainly can be considered an indicator of poverty." Seniors' advocate says elderly are struggling and deserve $250 federal rebate cheque Lastly, Walsh said crimes against seniors have increased dramatically since 2019. The report found the number of criminal violations involving a senior victim rose from 332 in 2019 to 580 in 2023 — a 72 per cent increase. She hopes the report can become an annually released document to determine if the well-being of seniors is improving, noting this report was completed with one-time funding. The report has been delivered to each of Newfoundland and Labrador's MHAs, she said, and hopes to continue advocacy soon. "That's the next step, now. Really analyzing it and determining where do we intervene." Download our free CBC News app to sign up for push alerts for CBC Newfoundland and Labrador.
