New Delhi: A resident of northeast Delhi fell victim to a sophisticated scam, losing Rs 7 lakh to a fraudster who impersonated one of his relatives. The scammer, claiming to be the victim's cousin, allegedly concocted a tale of impending arrest in Kuwait due to a visa issue. The 32-year-old man, who lives in Bhajanpura, filed a complaint with the the northeast district police on Nov 26, claiming that he was conned on Aug 13. He told police that he had received a friend request on a social media application from someone pretending to be his cousin, who worked in Kuwait. "After accepting the request, they began chatting, and the scammer claimed that he needed to transfer some money into the complainant's bank account," the complainant said. The fraudster asked for his account details and phone number, promising to withdraw the funds once he returned to Delhi. The scam escalated when the complainant received a WhatsApp message from the fraudster's number, stating that Rs 6 lakh was deposited into his account. He was later contacted by someone claiming to be from his bank, informing him of an international transaction. Soon, the scammer also informed him that his visa had expired, leading to the freezing of his funds by the Kuwaiti authorities. The fraudster insisted that the complainant pay a fine to "release" the money and avoid legal issues. The scam deepened when he was provided with the contact details of an alleged agent, who explained that a fine was imposed on the cousin for the expired visa and his passport and bank account were seized by Kuwaiti govt. The agent demanded Rs 7.8 lakh to resolve the issue, which the complainant transferred to the provided bank account. He realised that he was conned when the agent kept on asking for money on various pretexts. He then approached the cyber police station.
