New coach Chris Holtmann has been tasked with rebuilding DePaul to the point where it can return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2004. Northern Illinois coach Rashon Burno knows what it takes to steer DePaul to the NCAAs because he was the starting point guard on the 2000 team that made the tournament -- the Blue Demons' only other NCAA appearance since 1992. Perhaps they can compare notes Saturday afternoon when Burno leads the Huskies (2-3) back to his alma mater as DePaul (5-0) hosts its sixth straight home game in Chicago. There's just one problem with using last year's game as a potential barometer for Saturday's rematch: Almost no players on this year's teams were part of last year's squads. At DePaul, only assistant coach Paris Parham remains as Holtmann had the green light to bring in an all-new roster. UIC graduate transfer Isaiah Rivera (16.0 ppg, .485 3-point rate) and Coastal Carolina transfer Jacob Meyer (15.4 ppg, .406 on 3s) lead a balanced attack that focuses on getting half its shots from beyond the arc. At NIU, Burno retained only two players who competed against DePaul last year -- Ethan Butler and Oluwasegun Durosinmi -- and they combined for three points in 26 minutes in that game. The Huskies' main players used the transfer portal to join such programs as Kansas, Wisconsin, Penn State, Colorado State, James Madison, Georgia State and Niagara. With every starting job open, Butler has jumped into the lineup and produced 11.6 points, 4.8 rebounds, 1.8 blocks and 1.4 steals per game. Transfers Quentin Jones (Cal Poly) and James Dent (Western Illinois) pace the Huskies with 14.4 and 14.0 points per game. NIU is on a two-game losing streak, most recently a 75-48 home defeat at the hands of Elon on Wednesday. Holtmann hopes to have Arkansas transfer Layden Blocker for Saturday's game. Article content GREEN BAY, Wis. — Even though their long-shot hopes of winning the NFC North have vanished, the playoff-bound Green Bay Packers believe they can make a legitimate run at their first Super Bowl appearance since their 2010 championship season. A rapidly improving defense gives them ample reason for confidence. The Packers (11-4) followed up a seven-sack performance in a 30-13 victory at Seattle by producing the first shutout of the NFL season, a 34-0 playoff-clinching blowout of the New Orleans Saints on Monday night. Green Bay delivered its first shutout since a 17-0 triumph over Seattle in 2021 and its most lopsided victory since a 55-14 rout of the Chicago Bears in 2014. “We’ve noticed all along that the defense is a lot different this year, and they’ve been making some big-time plays all along,” quarterback Jordan Love said. “But any time you can hold anybody to zero points in the National Football League is pretty awesome.” The Packers were seeking to produce a championship-caliber defense to go along with their dynamic offense when they fired Joe Barry as coordinator in the offseason and replaced him with former Boston College coach Jeff Hafley. Green Bay switched from a 3-4 scheme to a 4-3, with Hafley emphasizing the need to produce more big plays. Green Bay has done just that by collecting 28 takeaways — 10 more than it had all of last year — to match the NFL’s third-highest total. The Packers haven’t forced this many turnovers since 2011, when they had 38 takeaways. That’s not the only area in which the defense has made strides. Green Bay is allowing just 19.1 points per game to rank sixth in the league in scoring defense. The Packers haven’t finished a season among the top six teams in scoring defense since their 2010 title run, when they yielded just 15 points per game to rank second. The Packers are giving up 312.1 yards per game for the league’s seventh-best total. That also puts them on pace for their highest season-ending rank since 2010, when they finished fifth in total defense. “We’re all working together, and we’ve just got some nice playmakers,” linebacker and rookie second-round pick Edgerrin Cooper said. The Packers have given up as many as 20 points just once in their last six games, a 34-31 defeat at Detroit on Dec. 5. That is the only time Green Bay has lost during that stretch. Whether this kind of success can carry over to the playoffs remains uncertain. Green Bay’s defense faces a much tougher task Sunday night against the Minnesota Vikings (13-2), who beat the Packers 31-29 at Lambeau Field on Sept. 29. This will mark the first time in the series’ 64-year history that both teams had at least 11 wins when they face off. Stock down There really aren’t any candidates for this category, considering the Packers produced their biggest victory margin in a decade. Injuries Packers coach Matt LaFleur offered an encouraging update on WR Christian Watson, who hurt a knee against the Saints. “We got good news on him, so more just a bruise. ... So we’ll see how he practices this week and see where we’re at,” LaFleur said Tuesday. ... CB Jaire Alexander (knee) missed a fifth straight game. S Javon Bullard (ankle), S Evan Williams (quadriceps) and LB Quay Walker (ankle) also didn’t play. Key number 30 — The Packers have scored at least 30 points in each of their last five games. The intense weekslong clashes come at a time when Syria, battered by over a decade of war and economic misery, negotiates its political future following half a century under the Assad dynasty's rule. Ruken Jamal, spokesperson of the Women's Protection Unit under the SDF, told The Associated Press that their fighters are just over seven miles (11 kilometers) away from the center of Manbij in their ongoing counteroffensive. She accused Ankara of trying to weaken the group's influence in negotiations over Syria's political future through the SNA. "Syria is now in a new phase, and discussions are underway about the future of the country," Jamal said. "Turkey is trying, through its attacks, to distract us with battles and exclude us from the negotiations in Damascus." A Britain-based opposition war monitor, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, says since the SNA's offensive in northern Syria against the Kurds started earlier this month, dozens from both sides have been killed. U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin spoke on Tuesday with Turkish Minister of National Defense Yasar Guler, according to Pentagon press secretary Major General Pat Ryder. He said they discussed the ongoing situation in Syria, and Austin emphasized that close and continuous coordination is crucial to a successful effort to counter IS in the country. They also discussed the importance of setting the conditions to enable a more secure and stable Syria. Ankara sees the SDF as an affiliate of its sworn enemy, the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, which it classifies as a terrorist organization. Turkish-backed armed groups alongside Turkish jets for years have attacked positions where the SDF are largely present across northern Syria, in a bid to create a buffer zone free from the group along the large border. While the SNA was involved in the lightning insurgency — led by the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham — that toppled Assad, it has continued its push against the SDF, seen as Syria's second key actor for its political future. On Monday, the SDF spokesperson Farhad Shami said the group's forces pushed back the Turkish-backed rebels from areas near the Tishrin Dam on the Euphrates, a key source of hydroelectric power. He said the SDF also destroyed a tank belonging to the rebels southeast of Manbij. The British-based war monitor said on Tuesday that the Kurdish-led group, following overnight fighting, has reclaimed four villages in the areas near the strategic dam. Turkish jets also pounded the strategic border town of Kobani in recent days. During Syria's uprising-turned-conflict, the Kurds carved out an enclave of autonomous rule across northeastern Syria, never fully allying entirely with Assad in Damascus nor the rebels trying to overthrow him. Even with the Assad family out of the picture, it appears that Ankara's position won't change, with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan's landmark visit to Syria maintaining a strong position on the Kurdish-led group in his meeting with de facto leader Ahmad al-Sharaa of HTS. "It has turned the region into a cauldron of terror with PKK members and far-left groups who have come from Turkey, Iraq, Iran and Europe," Fidan said in a news conference after the meeting. "The international community is turning a blind eye to this lawlessness because of the wardenship it provides [against IS]." With the ongoing fighting, SDF Commander Mazloum Abdi has expressed concern about a strong IS resurgence due to the power vacuum in Syria and the ongoing fighting, which has left the Kurdish-led group unable to carry out its attacks and raids on the extremist group's scattered sleeper cells. Tens of thousands of children, family members, and supporters of IS militants are still held in large detention centers in northeastern Syria, in areas under SDF control.

Bolinao Mayor Alfonso Celeste, in Executive Order (EO) 70 dated Dec. 20 and posted on the local government’s official social media pages Monday night, said the move aims to ensure the safety of the Bolinaoans. Celeste instead encouraged alternative noisemakers for the Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve revelries. The EO cited Republic Act 7183, or the Firecracker Law, which regulates the sale, distribution, manufacture and use of firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices. It also mentioned the Department of the Interior and Local Government Memorandum Circular 2017-105 that enumerated the roles and responsibilities of all officials and offices concerned in regulating the use of firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices in their areas. “While part of the celebration of Filipino holiday traditions is the use of firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices, a substantial number of firecracker-related injuries and casualties in the country is recorded every year,” Celeste said. A case like no other had Colchester and the country holding its breath, as the IT worker from Churchsfield, West Mersea, was found guilty and sentenced for committing a double murder. His victims, Stephen and Carol Baxter, were his friends and employers before they were poisoned in their home with a lethal dose of painkillers in April 2023. After a six-week trial, a jury found D’Wit unanimously guilty, learning about an altered last will, and a network of fake personas to manipulate the family from within. Luke D'Wit (Image: Essex Police) During the trial, the prosecution claimed that D’Wit, of Churchfields, West Mersea, administered a fatal dose of fentanyl to the couple and watched them die through a mobile device. The court heard how he created a web of different personas to befriend Carol and the rest of the family, including a doctor who gave specific health advice. The court was also told that D'Wit rewrote the Baxters' will to make himself a beneficiary and in control over the family bathmat business. He was sentenced to spend the next 37 years of his life in prison. Before passing his sentence, Judge Lavender said: "You ended their lives and brought grief and misery to the lives of others. "All of the family have made statements where they have eloquently and movingly expressed their profound loss and suffering." The Ann Marie McEvoy, 40, woman was found guilty by a jury of two counts of wounding with intent after an incident in November 2022. McEvoy, of Church Walk, Colchester, was found unfit to stand trial or enter a plea due to mental health difficulties, leading to a fact-finding trial being held at Lincoln Crown Court in June. The defendant was part of an eight-hour stand off with Lincolnshire Police, the court was told, which ended with McEvoy being arrested by armed officers who forced entry to the address where she stayed. Police recovered a large kitchen knife, which she previously used to deter an officer from her door, as it was captured by body-worn cameras and shown to the jury. The defence in this case argued there was no evidence linking the defendant to the knife. McEvoy was found unanimously to have carried out the acts she had been accused of, but a sentencing was adjourned. Bar owner Daniel Chappell denied causing the death of a 17-year-old girl, who died after suffering “catastrophic” injuries after being struck by a car on Hythe Hill in August 2021. Chappell, 37, was convicted unanimously by a jury of causing death by dangerous driving, despite claiming he was blinded by car headlights during the collision. He sparked disbelief when he shared pictures on social media saying he was planning to go on a trip and posts captioned ‘What a beautiful day to be alive’, which were branded “disgusting” by the prosecution and “gobsmacking” by the ruling judge. Baines’ home in King Stephe Road was raided in 2023 and police discovered a mobile phone which had hundreds of images of sexual abuse on it. A further search uncovered three videos of the most serious category, depicting penetration of a child whilst they are in pain or distress. The supermarket worker received an eight-month prison term suspended for two years, 30 days of rehabilitation activity requirements, £340 in fines and an entry on the sex offenders’ registry for the next ten years. An extensive investigation by Essex Police’s Child Abuse Investigation Team, launched in 2016, saw a successful end in December, when Stephen Gallagher was sentenced to 25 years behind bars. Gallagher, 59, of Normandy Avenue, financially and emotionally manipulated his victims and tried to accuse victims of lying, as he denied all allegations. He was found guilty of ten offences at a trial at Ipswich Crown Court in May. So, let's first find out what the report actually says. What is clear, however, is the outcome of a 2023 internal audit of NU's Social Development Fund (SDF) , and it is sobering. This SDF audit reveals a blatant disregard of corporate governance principles, where individuals entrusted with university resources prioritized personal gain over the mission of NU. The audit revealed that SDF management led by current NU Executive Vice President Aslan Sarinzhipov constructed an intricate web of subsidiary entities, including abroad, to systematically evade the oversight and control of the University. Funds ( over 14 billion tenge ) meant to assist students and faculty were used for personal gains of Aslan Sarinzhipov and questionable deals. Unfortunately, NU senior officials such as Vice President Kadisha Dairova participated in such schemes. When I voiced my concern earlier over the developments at NU, it is largely because of the track record of senior officials there.
