Video of the suspected shooter leaving the scene of the shooting Wednesday showed him riding a bicycle to Central Park and later taking a taxi cab to a bus depot, Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny told CNN. Here's the latest: Police believe gunman who killed UnitedHealthcare CEO has left New York City The gunman who killed the CEO of the largest U.S. health insurer may have fled the city on a bus, New York City police officials told CNN on Friday. Video of the suspected shooter leaving the scene of the shooting Wednesday showed him riding a bicycle to Central Park and later taking a taxi cab to a bus depot, Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny told CNN. “We have reason to believe that the person in question has left New York City,” Commissioner Jessica Tisch said. Gunman’s steps after killing UnitedHealthcare’s CEO give police new clues The gunman who killed the CEO of the largest U.S. health insurer made sure to wear a mask during the shooting yet left a trail of evidence in view of the nation’s biggest city and its network of security cameras that have aided authorities piecing together his movements and his identity. A law enforcement official said Friday that new surveillance footage shows the suspect riding the subway and visiting establishments in Manhattan and provided more clues about his actions in the days before he ambushed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson . The gunman’s whereabouts and identity remain unknown Friday, as did the reason for Wednesday’s killing. New York City police say evidence firmly points to it being a targeted attack . ▶ Read more about the search for the gunman For many companies, investor meetings are seen as a risk In many companies, investor meetings like the one UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was walking to when he was fatally shot are viewed as very risky because details on the location and who will be speaking are highly publicized. “It gives people an opportunity to arrive well in advance and take a look at the room, take a look at how people would probably come and go out of a location,” said Dave Komendat, president of DSKomendat Risk Management Services, which is based in the greater Seattle area. Some firms respond by beefing up security. For example, tech companies routinely require everyone attending a major event, such as Apple’s annual unveiling of the next iPhone or a shareholder meeting, to go through airport-style security checkpoints before entering. Others forgo in-person meetings with shareholders. ▶ Read more about how companies protect their leaders Police have obtained other surveillance images of the person wanted for questioning Those images include New York’s subway system, a law enforcement official said. In establishments where the person was captured on camera, he always appeared to pay with cash, the official said. The official wasn’t authorized to discuss details of the ongoing investigation and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. — Mike Balsamo Another health insurer taking precautions after the shooting Medica, a Minnesota-based nonprofit health care firm that serves 1.5 million customers in 12 states, said it’s temporarily closing all six locations. The firm has offices in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Nebraska and North Dakota, and employs about 3,000 people. Employees will work from home, Medica spokesman Greg Bury said in an email Friday. “The safety of Medica employees is our top priority and we have increased security both for all of our employees,” a statement from Medica said. “Although we have received no specific threats related to our campuses, our office buildings will be temporarily closed out of an abundance of caution.” Bury also said biographical information on the company’s executives was taken down from its website as a precaution. Government health insurance provider Centene Corp. says its Investor Day will now be virtual The insurer cited the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in its announcement about the Dec. 12 event. “All of us at Centene are deeply saddened by Brian Thompson’s death and want to express our support for all of those affected. Health insurance is a big industry and a small community; many members of the CenTeam crossed paths with Brian during their careers,” Centene CEO Sarah M. London said in a news release. “He was a person with a deep sense of empathy and clear passion for improving access to care. Our hearts are with his family and his colleagues during this difficult time.” Centene Corp. has grown in recent years to become the largest insurer in Medicaid, the state- and federally funded program that covers care for people with low incomes. Insurers manage Medicaid coverage for states, and Centene has more than 13 million people enrolled in that coverage. UnitedHealth Group says it’s focused on supporting Brian Thompson’s family The insurance company also said it’s focused on ensuring the safety of employees and assisting investigators. “While our hearts are broken, we have been touched by the huge outpouring of kindness and support in the hours since this horrific crime took place,” the company said. NY Mayor Eric Adams provided no new information on investigation’s progress during interviews But he said Friday that he’s confident police will arrest the shooter. “We are on the right road to apprehend him and bring him to justice,” Adams said on TV station WPIX. Hours after the shooting, UnitedHealthcare removed photographs of its executives from its website Later, it removed their names and biographies entirely. Investigators believe the suspect may have traveled to NY last month on a bus that originated in Atlanta Police and federal agents have been collecting information from Greyhound in an attempt to identify the suspect and are working to determine whether he purchased the ticket to New York in late November, a law enforcement official said. Investigators were also trying to obtain additional information from a cellphone recovered from a pedestrian plaza through which the shooter fled. Killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO spotlights complex challenge companies face in protecting top brass The fatal shooting of Brian Thompson while walking alone on a New York City sidewalk has put a spotlight on the widely varied approaches companies take to protect their leaders against threats. Experts say today’s political, economic and technological climate is only going to make the job of evaluating threats against executives and taking action to protect them even more difficult, experts say. Some organizations have a protective intelligence group that uses digital tools such as machine learning or artificial intelligence to comb through online comments to detect threats not only on social media platforms such as X but also on the dark web, says Komendat. They look for what’s being said about the company, its employees and its leadership to uncover risks. ▶ Read more about the steps companies take to protect their leadership Police test DNA and fingerprints on discarded bottle as they hunt for UnitedHealthcare CEO’s killer Police said Thursday they found a water bottle and protein bar wrapper from a trash can near the scene of the ambush and think the suspect bought them from a Starbucks minutes before the shooting. The items were being tested by the city’s medical examiner.Wall Street closes higher after business activity data

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 for PS5 is down in price for Cyber Monday to the lowest we've ever seen it, as Best Buy has taken nearly $30 off the market price - down to just $39.99 (was $69.99) . This is one of those deals that you'll want to be quick on the money for; not just when it comes to available stock (though anything with Spider-Man in the title is always at risk for that), but because Cyber Monday itself is only hours away from ending at time of writing. Best Buy doesn't specify an endpoint for this deal, but it doesn't seem likely that it'll be around for long. Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is the most recent of the PS5 Spider-Man adaptations, and the first in the series to let players switch between both the Peter Parker and Miles Morales versions of the character. In our Marvel's Spider-Man 2 review we gave it the full five stars, and that it was "as good as superhero gaming gets. It's the quintessential costume caper, larger than life in more ways than one, and whose blockbuster boss battles and mob-fighting forays have set new standards in not just superhero games, but AAA action-adventure games in general moving forward." Should you buy Marvel's Spider-Man 2? The PS5 Spider-Man games are definite crowd-pleasers across the board, built from big budgets and ambitions that cheerfully throw in everything but the kitchen sink. Marvel's Spider-Man 2 takes this philosophy to its furthest point yet, arguably for better and worse. It's full to bursting with ideas - some of which are fantastic, like the ability to create weblines, and some that could probably have remained on the cutting room floor... like the three separate occasions in which you go on gentle bicycle rides. Still, if you enjoyed the last two Spider-Man games, or indeed those on the PS2 back in the day, or even the Batman Arkham games to some extent, you'll find a lot of reasons to enjoy this particular entry in the series, especially as a way to satiate yourself on Insomniac hero antics until Wolverine eventually comes out. For the second time in as many days, Missouri flipped the commitment a four-star recruit. On Sunday night, it was Kentucky running back commit Marquise Davis. On Monday, DaMarion Fowlkes — a wide receiver out of Maryland — announced that he was joining Mizzou's 2025 class. He joins Donovan Olugbode and Shaun Terry as receivers who have pledged to the Tigers. Fowlkes had been committed to Pittsburgh since June, but Mizzou extended the receiver an offer Friday and had him in town for a visit for the Tigers' regular-season finale against Arkansas. He is the 230th-ranked player and the 22nd-ranked receiver in his class, according to 247Sports. Fowlkes held offers from Boston College, Indiana and Wake Forest, among others. The 5-foot-10, 175-pound receiver out of Good Counsel High School in Olney, Maryland, caught 47 passes for 761 yards and five touchdowns this season, and his elite, breakaway speed also made him a dangerous return man. He added five punt return touchdowns and one kick return touchdown, totaling 11 TDs and 1,247 all-purpose yards this season. Fowlkes was named to the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference first team as a receiver and returner. Five-star OT Rogers decommits from Mizzou On Monday afternoon, hours after Fowlkes joined the 2025 class, Mizzou saw firsthand that flip season goes both ways. Five-star offensive tackle Lamont Rogers announced on his X account that he was decommiting from the Tigers. Rogers, who had been committed to the Tigers since early July, has taken multiple game-day visits to College Station, Texas, this fall, leading many to assume the five-star offensive tackle will end up at Texas A&M. He played his high school ball at Mesquite Horn in Mesquite, Texas, which is roughly three hours from College Station. He visited Texas A&M on Oct. 5 and saw the Aggies' 41-10 rout of the Tigers in person. Mizzou running back commit Jamarion Morrow is another recruit who might be looking elsewhere. The four-star prospect visited Georgia for the Bulldogs' 31-17 win over Tennessee and was at Texas A&M on Saturday to watch the Aggies' 17-7 loss to Texas. Morrow has yet to decommit, but if he does end up going elsewhere, Mizzou may have another option to turn to. Brendon Haygood, a three-star running back out of Sachse, Texas, visited Columbia for the Arkansas game and decommitted from Boise State shortly before kickoff. Haygood confirmed to the Columbia Missourian that he is announcing his commitment at 8:45 p.m. Tuesday on his Instagram account and will choose between Mizzou and Texas Tech. With the addition of Fowlkes and the loss of Rogers, Mizzou currently sits at 16 commits in the Class of 2025. The Tigers' class is ranked No. 19 in the country, according to 247Sports.December 24, 2024 This article has been reviewed according to Science X's editorial process and policies . Editors have highlightedthe following attributes while ensuring the content's credibility: fact-checked peer-reviewed publication trusted source proofread by Liu Jia, Chinese Academy of Sciences A research team led by Prof. Nie Guangjun from the National Center for Nanoscience and Technology (NCNST) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and collaborators have demonstrated a tumor membrane antigens-based nanovaccine derived from liposomal doxorubicin treated tumor tissues, which is efficacious in inducing a potent immunological defense against tumors. The study is published online in Cell Reports Medicine . For solid tumor surgeries, challenges remain in postoperative tumor recurrence and metastasis. The correlation between postoperative tumor recurrence and metastasis and the host's antitumor immune status is well-established. Personalized cancer vaccines, using the patient's own tumor as an antigen source, stimulate a robust immune response that is efficacious in eliminating residual neoplastic foci following surgical intervention as well as in targeting metastatic lesions at a distance, significantly reducing the risk of postoperative tumor recurrence and metastasis. The efficacy of autologous tumor cells in clinical trials has been limited by their weak immunogenicity. The tumor membrane contains tumor-presented antigens and associated antigens, which can be developed into a personalized antigen library that more accurately reflects the expression of tumor antigens. Vaccines based on autologous tumor cell membrane antigens have been developed. In clinical practice, patients administered autologous tumor cell membrane-based vaccines (TMVs) frequently have a history of prior therapeutic interventions with chemotherapy being the predominant modality. However, chemotherapy has the potential to alter the immunogenic properties of tumor cell membranes, consequently impacting the therapeutic efficacy of the TMVs. In this study, researchers investigated the effects of preoperative chemotherapy on the efficacy of TMVs employing nano-formulated liposomal doxorubicin (NP-Dox) as a preoperative medication. For the formulation of the TMVs, they obtained the tumor membrane as the antigen, and resiquimod (R848), a potent dual Toll-like receptor 7/8 agonist with excellent efficacy, was encapsulated in Poly (lactide-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanoparticles to act as the adjuvant of the vaccine. The TMVs formulated from liposomal doxorubicin-treated tumors induced superior dendritic cell maturation and T cell activation compared to doxorubicin, demonstrating better efficacy in preventing recurrence and metastasis in the postoperative murine model, as well as in extending postoperative survival. Mechanistically, researchers demonstrated that NP-Dox, as a paradigmatic inducer of immunogenic cell death in tumors, upregulates the expression of immune-related molecules on the tumor cell membrane, enhancing the immunogenicity of tumor membrane antigens. Moreover, they showed that NP-Dox improves the immunological status of the tumor microenvironment, creating favorable conditions for subsequent nanovaccine immunization. "In a previous study, we developed an integrated vaccine formulation based on autologous tumor membrane antigens and bacterial cytoplasmic membrane adjuvants, which could achieve enhanced antitumor immune responses with a favorable biosafety profile," said Assoc. Prof. Zhao Ruifang from NCNST and the first author of this study. "However, for its clinical applications, we found that patients had undergone various treatments before using autologous tumor membrane vaccines with chemotherapy being relatively common." "This study provides valuable insights into the clinical application of TMVs, demonstrating its potential in solid tumor treatments. Concurrently, in this study, we employ nano-drugs both pre-and postoperatively, and showcase the superiority of nanotechnology in the integrated application of neoadjuvant chemotherapy and tumor immunotherapy," said Prof. Nie Guangjun from NCNST and another first author of this study.
