Believed to have been established by Yudhishthira, the king of Indraprastha, the crematorium has witnessed the last rites of several political heavyweights -- from former Union minister Arun Jaitley to Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Sunder Singh Bhandari. In the news for being the location of former prime minister Manmohan Singh's State funeral, Nigambodh Ghat on the banks of the Yamuna is not only Delhi's oldest, largest and busiest crematorium but also a haven for bird watchers and photographers. Believed to have been established by Yudhishthira, the king of Indraprastha, the crematorium has witnessed the last rites of several political heavyweights -- from former Union minister Arun Jaitley to Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Sunder Singh Bhandari. On Saturday, the mortal remains of Singh -- who led India on the path of economic liberalisation in the 1990s -- were consigned to flames at the ghat. The Congress had demanded the funeral take place at a location where a memorial to Singh could be built but the government said he would be accorded a State funeral at Nigambodh Ghat. The Congress called the decision a "deliberate insult to India's first Sikh prime minister". Among the top political heavyweights to be cremated at Nigambodh Ghat are Bharatiya Jana Sangh leader Deendayal Upadhyaya, former vice-president Krishan Kant and Delhi ex-chief minister Sheila Dikshit, whose official residence was converted to Singh's post-retirement home. Singh was accorded a State funeral at the ghat, whose last rites were performed with military honours. The ghat consists of a series of bathing and ceremonial-stepped piers leading to the river. The electric crematorium was built in the 1950s. A CNG-powered crematorium was added in the early 2000s. According to legends, the ghat was blessed by the presence of Hindu gods. One such legend mentioned in a scripture says that more than 5,500 years ago, in the times of Mahabharata, when gods walked on Earth, Brahma bathed at the ghat and regained his divine memory -- leading to the ghat acquiring its "Nigambodh" name, which means regaining knowledge. Another legend mentions that Yudhishthira, the eldest of the Pandava brothers of the Bharat dynasty and the king of Indraprastha, constructed the ghat. These days, the ghat serves two purposes -- being the largest and busiest cremation ground, and as a haven of sorts for bird watchers and photographers. Author Swapna Liddle, in her book "Chandni Chowk: The Mughal City of Old Delhi", says ancient tradition associated Delhi with Indra-prastha -- the holy place where Indra, the king of the gods, performed sacrifices and worshipped Vishnu. "This spot on the bank of the Yamuna was then blessed by Vishnu, who called it 'Nigambodhak' where knowledge of the Vedas could be gained simply by taking a dip in the waters. The name Nigambodhak literally meant 'that which makes known the knowledge of the Vedas'," she says in the book. The ghat was officially established by the Bari Panchayat Vaish Bisa Aggarwal, which was instituted in 1898 when Delhi was known as Shahjanabad. The crematorium is currently operated by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). "At that time, major business and trade activities were conducted by Vaish Agarwals. The entire society was scattered and used to perform birth and death ceremonies as per their wish and status which affected the lower strata of people," according to the description on Nigambodh Ghat's website. "The Vaish Bisa society then took a pledge to stop the over expenditure made on marriages, son's birth and death rituals and standardise the rituals so that even the poor could perform them with much less expense. Since then, Vaish Beese Agarwal Badi Panchayat has been diligently managing these important phases of life," it added. Should a cherished children’s tradition be interrupted by the conflicts of adults? The Burlington Public Library has decided that it should not. In the month of November 2024, the Burlington Public Library announced on their website that they will be continuing their Letters to Santa program despite the nationwide Canada Post strike that has been ongoing since November 15, 2024. Each of the six library branches in Burlington has put out a special red mailbox for this purpose. Families, as an enjoyable Christmas-themed activity this holiday season, are invited to bring their children to any of the libraries to get the task of letter-writing done. Children will be offered letter templates and pens and pencils so they can write to Santa Claus at the North Pole, report on their good behaviour throughout the year, and request a special list of gifts. The Burlington Public Library has taken measures to ensure children receiving a reply doesn’t depend on Canadian national politics. “At present, we are continuing to mail the letters in the hope that an agreement will be reached, ending the strike. While less magical, we do have a backup plan in case the postal strike continues,” says Krista Schwab, marketing and communications manager at the Burlington Public Library. “BPL will offer the option for parents and caregivers to stop by a branch and pick up a non-personalized response letter so that kids can receive a reply before the holidays. We will communicate this option if we need to act on it.” A letter to Santa is children’s literature that actually comes directly from the hands of children. Since the Victorian age, with the rise of Christmas as a cultural phenomenon in the West, children have voluntarily composed letters to the jolly bearded man in red as a means for practicing their alphabet and getting their voices heard by an adult with the power to grant them what they want. It can even be argued that a letter to Santa is a budding writer’s first persuasive essay. They have to convince Santa that they’ve earned the presents they’re asking for, with a year’s worth of general good conduct. It is a treasured activity in a child’s education. “While the focus of the Letters to Santa campaign is to inspire joy and to build a sense of community, writing these letters, whether by a child or with their caregiver, supports early literacy skills by helping children recognize the sounds and meanings of letters and words,” says Schwab on how writing a letter to Santa Claus impacts a child’s developing literacy. Letter writing has become something of an obsolete skill as the educational system transitions to teaching students more digital means of communication. There are resources for parents to consider if their children are having difficulty approaching how to write a letter, and the solution itself can be digital. Parents and children can go online for instructional material or even consult YouTube tutorials on how to write a letter to Santa. The Burlington Public Library has public computers that can be accessed with a library card. Unlike the Letters to Santa program, several library services have been suspended due to the library’s inability to receive or distribute mail. Interlibrary loans, physical copies of new issues of magazines, and mailed customer notices will not be available for the duration of the strike. Letters to Santa envelopes can be dropped off at any of the following library branches: Aldershot, Alton, Brant Hills, Central, New Appleby, and Tansley Woods. Letters will be accepted until December 5, 2024.How a Chinese hacking campaign is impacting telecoms
WASHINGTON (AP) — A freelance photographer and local government official from Illinois has been arrested on charges alleging he joined a mob's attack on the U.S. Capitol and pushed against a police officer’s riot shield, according to court records unsealed on Friday. Patrick Gorski, 27, was arrested in Chicago on Thursday on charges including obstructing law enforcement officers during a civil disorder, a felony. A federal judge ordered him released on bond after his initial court appearance. Gorski didn’t immediately respond to an email seeking comment. An attorney who represented him after his arrest declined to comment on Gorski's behalf. Authorities allege that during the attack, Gorski climbed scaffolding, breaching police lines, and took photos and videos inside the building. He yelled at officers, pushed against an officer's riot shield and was eventually forced out after being sprayed with a chemical irritant, authorities said. When the FBI interviewed him, Gorski did not claim that he was working as a photojournalist during the Jan. 6, 2021, riot and said he didn't bring his professional camera to the Capitol. He told federal agents that he had worked as a photographer for the Chicago Fire Department and for Donald Trump’s 2020 presidential campaign. He has not professionally published any photographs of the Capitol riot, according to the FBI. An FBI agent’s affidavit says some of Gorski’s sports photographs are available through Getty Images and have been “picked up” by The Associated Press and USA Today. Authorities said Gorski has continued to take photos at some local sporting events in Chicago but hasn't published any political photographs in the last five years. Gorski is not an Associated Press journalist and has never been employed by the news organization, said Lauren Easton, AP's vice president of corporate communications. "We have distributed some photos he took for AP’s photo partners and member news organizations," Easton said in a statement. Gorski's resume says he works as a building commissioner for the Village of Norridge, Illinois, and graduated earlier this year from Southeastern Illinois University with a master’s degree in public administration. He attended then-President Trump's “Stop the Steal” rally near the White House on Jan. 6 before he marched to the Capitol in a group of people that included conspiracy theorist Alex Jones and Owen Shroyer , who has hosted a show on Jones' Infowars website. On the west side of the Capitol, Gorski climbed up a wall onto stairs, helped another rioter onto the wall and removed a tarp covering scaffolding, according to the FBI. He climbed up and down the scaffolding before he helped pass a bike rack to other rioters, the agent's affidavit says. Gorski pointed and yelled at police officers outside the building. He also clapped and chanted, “Let us in!” After rioters broke through a police lines and sent officers retreating, Gorski hung a flag over the edge of a balcony. Gorski used his phone to take photos or videos inside a tunnel entrance that police were guarding, according to the affidavit. He screamed at the officers, “This is our house!” as he pushed against an officer’s riot shield, the FBI said. Gorski left the tunnel after several minutes and entered the Capitol through the Senate Wing door, taking more photos or videos inside the building, the affidavit says. An officer had to forcibly move Gorski from a doorway in another part of the Capitol, according to the agent. Gorski retreated after police sprayed him with a chemical irritant. Approximately one year after the attack, the FBI received a tip that Gorski had posted photos of the riot in a group chat with friends. More than 1,500 people have been charged with federal crimes stemming from the Capitol riot.Ulster ended 2024 as they started it by winning an Irish derby away from home and in the process brought a five-match losing run to an end with a deserved win at Dexcom Stadium in Galway. Ulster have endured a lot since defeating Leinster at the RDS on New Year’s Day almost twelve months ago but they were full value for their win over a disappointing Connacht side who have now failed to pick up a single point in their last three URC games, two of which were at home. Ulster led 10-7 at the break, having started the game superbly and dominated the opening quarter when Connacht just could not get their hands on the ball on a perfect night for rugby in Galway. Both sides were forced into two late changes with illness ruling out captain Alan O’Connor. Kieran Treadwell came into the second row with Nick Timoney captaining the side. And then hooker Rob Andrew was replaced after picking up a knock in the warm-up with John Andrew coming in to start with James McCormick added to the bench. Connacht also lost their hooker Dave Heffernan before the game, who was replaced by Dylan Tierney-Martin, while Niall Murray came in for younger brother Darragh in the second row. Connacht struggled with Ulster’s early blitz and when out-half Jack Murphy, in his first start, executed a brilliant 50:22 after a knock-on by Bundee Aki after two minutes, the visitors penned Pete Wilkins side deep inside their own half. The pressure eventually told after a series of set-pieces inside the Connacht 22 and loosehead Eric O’Sullivan, with a penalty advantage, made it over the line near the left post. Nathan Doak converted to lead 7-0 after 12 minutes. Ulster pushed on from there with No.8 academy player James McNabney leading the way and Doak extended their lead with a penalty in front of the posts after 14 minutes. But with Connacht getting an edge in the scrum where Finlay Bealham got the upper hand on O’Sullivan, they started to build the phases after having just 37% possession in the opening quarter. The Ulster defence was good despite their troubles in the scrum but they were carved open six minutes from the break when a sublime chip from Jack Carty was fumbled by Ulster fullback Mike Lowry and the ball bounced kindly for Mack Hansen who collected and raced in to score under the posts. Carty converted to cut the gap to 10-7. Ulster brought in Andrew Warwick for O’Sullivan at the start of the second half and were forced to make another change when winger Werner Kok had to go off and was replaced by Wilhelm de Klerk. Bealham and Connacht won another penalty in the first scrum of the second half after 50 minutes to clear their lines but Ulster’s defence was organised, pilfering the lineout through Cormac Izuchukwu before countering from deep and when Sean Jansen, just on the field, was pinged for offside Ulster had no hesitation in going for the right corner. And they were rewarded after McNabney took the lineout, with the superb Nick Timoney spinning away and somehow managing to ground the ball. Doak added the difficult conversion from the right to lead 17-7 after 56 minutes. Connacht changed their half-backs with Ben Murphy coming on to play against his brother Jack — with dad Richie in the Ulster coaching box — while Cathal Forde moved to out-half after Jack Carty was replaced by Shane Jennings. Connacht, with Jansen carrying well, pushed forward in a bid to save the game but their error count remained high, squandering a penalty to the left corner with a knock-on after taking the lineout, while another promising lineout in the right corner was again turned over. And then after opting for the corner with a penalty on the 22, Forde kicked the ball dead as he went for maximum ground just over ten minutes from the end. A chip from Hansen saw him almost get in for a second try and when Dave McCann was forced to carry back over his own line, Connacht were presented with a five-metre scrum in front of the posts six minutes from time. But the new Ulster front row got the shove and forced a penalty to clear their lines and they held on from there to secure a badly needed win. Scorers: Connacht: Try: M Hansen. Con: J Carty. As a result, defendants' statements about Hasbro's inventory, and what inventory levels reflected regarding demand, were materially false and misleading and/or lacked a reasonable basis. Newcastle have found their Tamika Upton replacement, with Wests Tigers star Botille Vette-Welsh set to join the club for the next three NRLW seasons. Just two weeks after agreeing to release the game's best player in Upton, the Knights have landed the best off-contract fullback on the market in Vette-Welsh. Newcastle could not confirm the contract when contacted, but AAP can reveal former NSW and Australia No.1 Vette-Welsh will join for the start of the 2025 season. The deal is viewed as a win for both the 28-year-old and the Knights, whose defence of back-to-back premierships ended in the semi-finals this year. At her best, Vette-Welsh is one of the premier fullbacks in the women's game, having previously played for NSW and Australia. She was also one of the Tigers' first signings on entry to the NRLW in 2023 and an inaugural co-captain, making a successful return from an ACL rupture. Vette-Welsh scored two tries and set up another two as the Tigers collected this year's wooden spoon, but she will give the Knights much-needed strike at the back. Her move will also ensure Newcastle have one of the NRLW's best spines, with Vette-Welsh joining English international Georgia Roache, rising star Jesse Southwell and Jillaroos hooker Olivia Higgins. Upton's exit from Newcastle was always likely to have wide-reaching ramifications across the NRLW. The Jillaroos fullback won three premierships at Brisbane between 2018 and 2020, before moving to Newcastle in 2022 and winning a further two titles there. But she requested a release from the Knights on personal grounds this season, desperate to return home to Queensland and closer to family. Upton signed a three-year deal to return to the Broncos this week, after a year that has included the loss of her grandfather and health issues for her grandmother. "I loved Newcastle and that was it for me. I was quite happy. Then my personal and family circumstances changed, which changed the ballpark," Upton told AAP this week. "Football was no longer the priority of mine. Getting back home was. And it was too hard to be able to do my football with everything going on at home. "My family never put pressure on me, they always want me to chase my dreams. But you don't get a second chance to spend time with your family." Meanwhile, Vette-Welsh's move means the Tigers are now another club in search of a fullback after losing one of their biggest names. Canberra are also in the market for a No.1 after losing Apii Nicholls, who will return to the Warriors in 2025 in their comeback to the competition. Canterbury are also yet to land a specialist fullback on their entry to the NRLW next year.VANCOUVER, BC / ACCESSWIRE / November 22, 2024 / Kidoz Inc.
