The site was located about 100 miles from Howland Island, which was Amelia Earhart’s intended destination when her plane vanished in the summer of 1937. Her disappearance is one of the most enduring mysteries in aviation history, and the researchers hoped they had solved it. But they knew they would need more information before drawing definitive conclusions. On November 6, the exploration company Deep Sea Vision announced in an Instagram post that it had bad news: The mysterious object was a rock formation that just so happened to be shaped like Earhart’s Lockheed 10-E Electra aircraft. A post shared by Deep Sea Vision (@deep.sea.vision) “Talk about the cruelest formation ever created by nature,” Deep Sea Vision CEO Tony Romeo, a former U.S. Air Force intelligence officer, tells CNN ’s Taylor Nicioli. “It’s almost like somebody did set those rocks out in this nice little pattern of her plane, just to mess with somebody out there looking for her.” Romeo and two of his brothers are also pilots, and they were hopeful about their chances, as he told the Wall Street Journal ’s Nidhi Subbaraman in January. After all, they had always suspected that the mystery would be solved by pilots, rather than mariners. Several years ago, Romeo sold his real estate interests to fund the $11 million search. Based on the facts of Earhart’s final voyage, the company was searching in the right place, as Dorothy Cochrane , an aeronautics curator at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum , tells Smithsonian magazine. Today, most experts think that Earhart ran out of fuel near Howland Island. That was the conclusion that Elgen Long, an American aviator and researcher, and his wife, Marie, came to after decades of exhaustive research, which they published in their 1999 book Amelia Earhart: The Mystery Solved . In recent years, exploration companies like Deep Sea Vision and Nauticos—which has staged three unsuccessful searches —have been building on their work. “With each expedition, they compress the search area,” says Cochrane. “I remain hopeful that the Electra will be found.” At the time of her disappearance, Earhart was a household name around the world. She had risen to fame after becoming the first woman to fly across the Atlantic as a passenger in 1928. Four years later, she became the first woman (and second person) to make the same voyage as a solo pilot. In June 1937, Earhart hoped to break a new barrier: becoming the first woman to fly around the world . After setting out from Florida, Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan, traveled for more than 20,000 miles , making stops in South America, Africa, India and New Guinea. The next leg of the journey was crossing the Pacific. The duo planned to stop on Howland Island, a 13,200-foot-long strip of land in the middle of the ocean, where they would refuel. After taking off on July 2, the plane and its two passengers were never seen again. The official search lasted for more than two weeks but proved fruitless. In the eight decades since, interested onlookers have felt compelled to keep looking. As Romeo told the Wall Street Journal , working on the mystery was “maybe the most exciting thing I’ll ever do in my life.” Late last year, Romeo set out with his 16-person crew from Deep Sea Vision. The team used millions of dollars of advanced equipment—sonar technology attached to an autonomous underwater vehicle—to scan 5,200 square miles of the ocean floor. A few months later, the researchers were reviewing sonar images when they noticed the plane-shaped object. Their discovery made headlines around the world . While many experts were intrigued by the news, they also urged caution. A post shared by Deep Sea Vision (@deep.sea.vision) “It really requires further research,” Cochrane told Smithsonian magazine ’s Sarah Kuta at the time. “Finding something that’s really worth investigating further is step one. Verifying it’s the actual craft is step two.” The fuzzy sonar images had been taken from about 1,640 feet away. A few weeks ago, the team returned to the site and positioned their underwater vehicle directly above the area. After a 24-hour-long wait, the results were in: A high-resolution image showed nothing more than an “unfortunate rock formation,” as Romeo tells the Wall Street Journal . “I’m super disappointed out here, but you know, I guess that’s life,” he adds. Romeo isn’t giving up; in the recent Instagram post, Deep Sea Vision promised that it’s continuing to search. So is Nauticos, which recently completed an analysis of potential search areas using radio data , per CNN. David Jourdan, the company’s co-founder and president, thinks the remaining areas could potentially be investigated in one more mission. Meanwhile, without new evidence, some onlookers have formed their own versions of the story. For many years, conspiracy theories about Earhart’s disappearance—that she was a spy, that she adopted a new identity—proliferated. Cochrane hopes that the plane will be found, finally putting some of these notions to rest. “Besides solving one of the greatest mysteries of the 20th century,” she says, “the discovery would end speculation and return focus to Amelia Earhart’s enduring contributions to aviation and her impact in women’s and American history.” Get the latest stories in your inbox every weekday. bkparashar@htlive.com After a setback in the Lok Sabha elections, the BJP is now basking in euphoria following its resounding victory in the Uttar Pradesh assembly bypolls, effectively halting the momentum the Samajwadi Party-led Opposition gained just over five months ago on the road to the 2027 assembly elections. The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) won seven of the nine assembly seats for which the bypolls were held on November 20. The NDA not only improved its tally over 2022, but also snatched seats like Kundarki and Katehari from the SP, besides increasing the winning margins on some and narrowing down the defeat gap on some others. The NDA won only four of these seats in 2022. The Ghaziabad, Khair and Phulpur seats went to the BJP and Majhawan to its alliance partner, the NISHAD party, then. In the 2024 bypolls, the BJP has retained all these four seats and brought three additional seats into its kitty. The BJP won the Ghaziabad, Khair, Kundarki, Phulpur, Majhawan, and Katehari seats while its ally the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) retained the Meerapur seat. The RLD was the SP’s ally in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh assembly polls. The SP that emerged as the dominant force in the Lok Sabha elections in UP had to remain satisfied with just two seats, Sisamau and Karhal, which is its pocketborough. The BJP’s landslide win in the assembly bypolls comes as a powerful morale booster after party’s tally fell from 62 out of 80 Lok Sabha seatsin 2019 to just 33 in June 2024 whereas the SP emerged as the single largest party from the state with 37 Lok Sabha seats. The bypoll results, it is believed, will inject the much-needed confidence into the party as it gears up for the crucial 2027 battle. In fact, the bypolls were a critical test for the BJP, given the high stakes involved and the political capital invested. Chief minister Yogi Adityanath himself spearheaded the campaign. Both deputy chief ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak, state BJP chief Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary and general secretary (organisation) Dharampal were also assigned the seats with a view to ensuring the party’s victory. All this reflected the BJP’s desperation as well as determination to reverse setbacks it suffered in the Lok Sabha polls. Hence, the party pulled out all stops to win the battle of perception. Otherwise, the bypolls had no other significance. The results have not only saved the party from potential embarrassment, but also reaffirmed its grassroots strength and ability to mobilise its cadre effectively. Analysts view these victories as a testament to the BJP’s organisational machinery and its continued appeal. The results, according to them, have come a big relief to Yogi Adityanath personally and the BJP in general. “The outcome of the bypolls will consolidate the Yogi Adityanath’s leadership in the BJP and the government and put brakes to many rumours that gained currency after the Lok Sabha polls, within and outside the party,” political scientist Shashi Kant Pandey said. Welcoming the results, UP BJP chief Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary said, “It is the victory of the work of the double-engine government in the state and defeat of the SP’s negative politics and lies that now stand exposed.” Pandey, however, said despite its resounding victory in the by-polls, the BJP would continue to face challenges ahead. “The party’s leadership will need to address the factors that led to its Lok Sabha debacle and sustain the momentum gained through these bypolls,” he said. An indication about this already has already come from SP chief Akhilesh Yadav who, after the results, wrote on X, “The tricks of those who have made ‘election’ synonymous with ‘corruption’ have been captured in photographs and exposed before the world. The world, the country and Uttar Pradesh saw the most distorted form of electoral politics in this by-election. There may be a time of falsehood but not an era. Jim Risch , the ranking member of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, who was asked on Friday whether President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for defense secretary, Pete Hegseth , should retract comments that he believes men and women should not serve together in combat units . “I think it’s delusional for anybody to not agree that women in combat creates certain unique situations that have to be dealt with. I think the jury’s still out on how to do that," Risch said during a panel session at the Halifax International Security Forum on Friday. Carignan, Canada's chief of defense staff and the first woman to command the armed forces of any Group of 20 or Group of Seven country, took issue with those remarks during a panel session on Saturday. "If you’ll allow me, I would first like maybe to respond to Senator Risch’s statement yesterday about women in combat because I wouldn’t want anyone to leave this forum with this idea that women are a distraction to defense and national security," Carignan said. “After 39 years of career as a combat arms officer and risking my life in many operations across the world, I can’t believe that in 2024, we still have to justify the contribution of women to their defense and to their service, in their country. I wouldn’t want anyone to leave this forum with this idea that this is that it is some kind of social experiment.” Carignan said women have participating in combat for hundreds of years but have never been recognized for fighting for their country. She noted the women military personnel in the room. “All the women sitting here in uniform, stepping in, and deciding to get into harm’s way and fight for their country, need to be recognized for doing so," she said. “So again, this is the distraction, not the women themselves." Carignan received a standing ovation at the forum, which attracts defense and security officials from Western democracies. Hegseth has reignited a debate that many thought had been long settled: Should women be allowed to serve their country by fighting on the front lines? The former Fox News commentator made it clear, in his own book and in interviews, that he believes men and women should not serve together in combat units . If Hegseth is confirmed by the Senate, he could try to end the Pentagon’s nearly decade-old practice of making all combat jobs open to women. Hegseth’s remarks have generated a barrage of praise and condemnation. Carignan was promoted to the rank of general during the change-of-command ceremony this past summer, after being chosen by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government to become Canada’s first female defense chief.
