New Jersey fines firms $40K for sports betting violationsMumbai: While the contest was between the ruling Mahayuti and the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi, which together constitute six major parties, in the Maharashtra assembly polls, independent candidates showed their mettle by standing second in 19 constituencies. The Mahayuti swept the polls to the 288-member assembly, with BJP bagging 132 seats while Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena got 57 and 41 went into the kitty of the NCP. The opposition Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT) and NCP (SP) of Sharad Pawar managed to win just 16, 20 and 10 seats, respectively. In Aheri constituency in Gadchiroli district, independent candidate Raje Ambrish Rao Raje Satyavanrao Atram, who had previously won in 2014 as a BJP candidate and was also a minister in the Devendra Fadnavis government, lost to Nationalist Congress Party’s (NCP) Atram Dharamraobaba Bhagwantrao by just 16,814 votes. In Airoli constituency in Navi Mumbai, BJP’s Ganesh Naik defeated independent challenger Vijay Chougule by 91,880 votes. However, Chougule managed to race ahead of the contestant from Shiv Sena (UBT). In Amalner (Jalgaon district), independent candidate Shirish Hiralal Chaudhari finished second to NCP’s Anil Bhaidas Patil. He lost the poll by 33,435 votes. Similarly, in Beed’s Ashti constituency, BJP’s Dhas Suresh Ramchandra won by 77,975 votes, while independent candidate Bhimrao Anandrao Dhonde finished second. The Badnera constituency in Amaravati district saw independent candidate Priti Sanjay Band finish runner-up to Ravi Rana of the Rashtriya Yuva Swabhiman Party. Rana was backed by the BJP in Badnera. In Kalyan East, Mahesh Dashrath Gaikwad, an independent candidate, lost narrowly to BJP’s Sulbha Ganpat Gaikwad by 26,408 votes. New Jersey fines firms $40K for sports betting violationsAs the treasury and the opposition kicked off negotiations to resolve political disputes, Senator Irfan Siddiqui, a member of the government's committee, confirmed that they have accepted the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) team's demand to consult its incarcerated party founder Imran Khan. The PTI and government finally kick-started the much-awaited negotiation process at the Parliament House, Islamabad, today with "hopes of a positive outcome" in a bid to ease the country's political tensions. Irfan, speaking on Geo News programme "Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Sath", said that people want peace and democratic norms instead of anarchy and economic instability in the country. Pointing towards deferment of verdict in the £190 million Al-Qadir Trust case against the PTI founder and his wife, he clarified that the government has nothing to do with the judicial matters, ruling out any connection with the ongoing negotiation process. He added that January 2 has been fixed to hold further talks with the consultation of both committees which would not be the final meeting. The senator highlighted that both sides have mutually agreed on resolving the matter behind closed doors and refrain from affecting the dialogue via statements or speeches. "We want a logical conclusion of the talks. We told them [PTI] to present their demand in the shape of charter of demand," he added. When questioned about potential outcomes, Irfan said that, at this stage, the government could not give any assurances to the opposition. He, however, said that the government committee "comprising senior members who know the constitutional and legal matters" would mull over options after receiving the former ruling party's demands. Irfan was of the view that the PTI negotiation committee was seemingly having the mandate of the former premier. "PTI team expressed a desire to hold a meeting with its founder which we have accepted. We also want a contact between the PTI team and Imran," he added. Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) Chief Senator Raja Nasir Abbas, speaking on the same programme, said that he witnessed "many positive things" during the meeting summoned by the incumbent government. He said that the PTI founder proved his patriotic approach by forming a negotiation committee and blamed the government for making a delay in constituting its dialogue committee. He emphasised that it was necessary to arrange a meeting between the PTI committee and Imran which would exhibit a positive approach by the government. The MWM chief also urged the government to gain benefits from the ongoing dialogue process to resolve political disputes. The federal government and the Imran Khan founded-party conducted their much-hyped meeting in a conducive environment and resolved to continue dialogue process. The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, PM's Adviser Rana Sanaullah, Senator Irfan Siddiqui, PPP leaders Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Naveed Qamar, and Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) leader Farooq Sattar. The major opposition party, meanwhile, was represented by former NA Speaker Asad Qaiser, Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) Chairman Sahibzada Hamid Raza, and Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, in today's session. (AP) — Kobe Sanders scored 27 points, including five of six from the free throw line in the closing minutes, and Nevada pulled away late to beat Oklahoma State 90-78 for a fifth-place finish at the Charleston Classic on Sunday. Nevada's lone loss in its first six games came in the tournament's opening round when the Wolf Pack fell to Vanderbilt 73-71. The Cowboys never led in the contest and Nevada grabbed the lead for good on Justin McBride's tip-in with under 13 minutes left to take a 14-12 lead. Tre Coleman hit two free throws and Chuck Bailey II hit a late jumper to put Nevada up 40-33 at intermission. Abou Ousmane's tip-in at the 5:21 mark got the Cowboys within five, 75-70 but Brandon Love answered with a three-point play seconds later and the Wolf Pack pulled away.
