However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky swiftly responded by stating that the actual number of casualties stood at 43,000. This stark difference in reported casualty figures has sparked widespread debate and skepticism regarding the accuracy of the numbers provided by various parties involved in the conflict.

The expanded Big Ten is poised to be a major player in this season's College Football Playoff. The 18-team conference had three of the top-four teams in the AP poll this week — No. 1 Oregon, No. 2 Ohio State and No. 4 Penn State. A one-loss Indiana team is ranked 10th but is still very much a contender to make the playoff, given how many Southeastern Conference teams have three defeats or more. Indiana's rise has been perhaps the Big Ten's biggest story this season. Much of the spotlight was on newcomers Oregon, Southern California, UCLA and Washington, but aside from the top-ranked Ducks, that foursome has struggled to impress. Meanwhile, the Hoosiers won their first 10 games under new coach Curt Cignetti before losing at Ohio State last weekend. Oregon beat Ohio State 32-31 back in October, and if the Buckeyes beat rival Michigan this weekend, they'll earn a rematch with the Ducks for the Big Ten title. And it's entirely possible another matchup between those two teams awaits in the CFP. Dillon Gabriel has quarterbacked Oregon to an unbeaten record, throwing for 3,066 yards and 22 touchdowns in 11 games. But don't overlook Iowa's Kaleb Johnson and his 21 rushing TDs, and quarterback Kurtis Rourke has been a big part of Indiana's improvement. Penn State's Abdul Carter has eight sacks and two forced fumbles and could be one of the top edge rushers drafted this year. Oregon (11-0, 8-0), Ohio State (10-1, 7-1), Penn State (10-1, 7-1), Indiana (10-1, 7-1), Illinois (8-3, 5-3), Iowa (7-4, 5-3), Michigan (6-5, 4-4), Minnesota (6-5, 4-4), Washington (6-5, 4-4), Southern California (6-5, 4-5), Nebraska (6-5, 3-5) and Rutgers (6-5, 3-5) have already reached the six-win mark for bowl eligibility. Michigan State (5-6, 3-5) and Wisconsin (5-6, 3-5) can join them. There may not be many firings in general at the top level of college football. The prospect of sharing revenue with athletes in the future might lead schools to be more judicious about shedding one coach and hiring a new one. Who should be most worried in the Big Ten? Well, Lincoln Riley is struggling to stay above .500 in his third season at USC. Purdue is 1-10, but coach Ryan Walters is only in his second season. Maryland's Mike Locksley has been there six years and his Terrapins are 4-7, but this was his first real step backward after guiding the team to three straight bowl wins. Cignetti has shown it is possible for a coaching change to push a previously moribund program to some impressive heights in a short amount of time — but the improvement has been more incremental at Michigan State following Jonathan Smith's arrival. Sherrone Moore wasn't a completely unknown commodity at Michigan after he won some massive games in place of a suspended Jim Harbaugh last year. But in his first season completely at the helm, the Wolverines have declined significantly following their national title a season ago. The Big Ten is home to one of the most dynamic freshmen in the country in Ohio State receiver Jeremiah Smith. He has 52 catches for 899 yards and nine touchdowns. Highly touted quarterback Dylan Raiola has teamed up with fellow freshman Jacory Barney (49 catches) to lead Nebraska to bowl eligibility. Ohio State is on track to land the Big Ten's top class, according to 247 Sports, but the big news recently was quarterback Bryce Underwood flipping from LSU to Michigan. If the Wolverines do in fact keep Underwood in his home state, that would be a big development for Moore. Get local news delivered to your inbox!

Representatives of Siptu , Fórsa , the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation as well as the Irish Congress of Trade Unions met officials in Dublin on Tuesday from the government departments responsible for funding the hundreds of organisations providing essential homeless, health, disability and other services under contract. The union side said afterwards they were told at the outset the officials were aware of the attention the exchange between Ms Fallon and the Taoiseach in Kanturk, Co Cork, had received but that their mandate with regard to the talks had not changed. “There are people speaking out of both sides of their mouths here,” said Siptu’s senior health sector organiser Kevin Figgis, after the meeting had concluded. “When a microphone is put under their noses there are politicians saying how much they want to see something done for the S39 workers. We have been led to believe previously Roderic O’Gorman is in favour of sorting this out and in recent days we have both the Taoiseach and Tánaiste say they want to see it resolved. “If that’s the case then they need to provide their officials with the mandate they require to resolve this and we will return to the table.” The dispute primarily revolves around the pay of thousands of staff at S39, S10, S40 and S56 organisations, some of them large, household names like Enable Ireland, the Irish Wheelchair Association and Rehab. The section numbers refer to the legislation under which the services are contracted. Many of the staff previously had parity with colleagues directly employed by agencies like the HSE but lost it in the aftermath of the economic crash. A deal that averted a strike in October of last year provided for a staged pay increase of 8 per cent and committed the government side to move towards a restoration of that parity. It subsequently offered a further 8 per cent but this falls short of the 9.25 per cent, excluding the local bargaining element, agreed in the public sector pay deal struck earlier this year and would, it was suggested, be spread over a longer term. In a statement on Tuesday the union side said “the government negotiators are acutely aware of what is required to bring about a resolution to this long-standing dispute. While we remain available to engage if the current impasse continues we will find ourselves facing an unnecessary dispute.” Separately, meanwhile, two of the unions involved, Fórsa and the INMO, will on Wednesday announce the outcome of ballots conducted in recent weeks on industrial action over staffing levels in the HSE. Connect, which represents many craft workers across the health service, is due to announce the outcome of a similar vote later in the week. The memberships are expected to have voted favour of action which would have the potential to extend to strikes. With the executives of each likely to meet before any decision is confirmed on how they intend to proceed, however, and with three weeks’ notice of any action required in the health service, it is not expected any disruption would come this side of Christmas. In a statement the Department of Children, which has taken the lead for the government side in the process, provided a more positive assessment of the meeting. “During informal talks today the departments tabled proposals taking account of the unions’ position,” it said. “The unions have responded with additional proposals which will require consideration. The departments look forward to further and early engagement at the WRC to resume substantive talks.” Emmet Malone is Work Correspondent at The Irish TimesTikTok users claim €23 Zara perfume is a dupe for €150 luxury scentIn addition to its captivating story and characters, "The War of Rohan" also boasts top-notch animation and visual effects. The grades are 40% higher than the existing reserves. The new intercepts in the Frank Zone are outside documented resources. The discovery comes from the company's 100,000 metres of drilling launched earlier this year, and shows the gold district's untapped potential, president and CEO Darren Hall said Monday in a release. It "strengthens our confidence that Valentine represents a new gold district," Hall said. “Since our initial due diligence in 2024, the team has been extremely excited by the highly prospective district potential of the Valentine gold mine property, which has a similar geologic setting to the prolific Val-d’Or and Timmins camps in the Abitibi gold belt,” Hall said. The Valentine project, 85% complete as of this month, remains on track to pour its first gold in the second quarter next year. With construction nearing completion and production expected to average 200,000 oz. per year over the first 12 years, the recent exploration success adds momentum to Calibre’s push to establish Valentine as a cornerstone asset. Highlight hole FZ-24-048 cut 172.8 metres at 2.43 grams gold per tonne from 271 metres depth. Hole FZ-24-046 returned 95.4 metres at 2.12 grams gold from 341 metres depth and hole FZ-24-040 cut 78.3 metres grading 2.26 grams gold from 361 metres deep. The drilling targets the underexplored Valentine Lake Shear Zone, which stretches 32 km across Calibre’s 250 sq. km property. A 2022 feasibility study for the Valentine project defined proven and probable reserves of 2.7 million oz. (51.6 million tonnes at 1.62 grams gold per tonne) and 3.9 million measured and indicated oz. (64.6 million tonnes at 1.90 grams gold), inclusive of the reserves. There are also 1.1 million inferred oz. (20.7 million tonnes at 1.65 grams gold). The drilling found a 1,000-metre corridor of continuous mineralization. Several intercepts contained visible gold. Calibre shares opened in the red on Monday at $2.33 following Friday’s $2.35 close, but by early afternoon trading, bids were pushing prices 1.3% or 3¢ higher at $2.38. Shares have ranged between $1.18-$2.90 over the past 12 months and the company has a market capitalization of $1.9 billion. The company’s growth prospects have some analysts convinced. BMO’s mining analyst Brian Quast maintains an outperform rating on the stock due to the company’s long-term growth plans. He gives a target price of $4.40 per share. Calibre’s senior vice-president of strategy and growth, Tom Gallo, explained that the 1 km stretch of gold mineralization the new drilling outlined is southwest of the Leprechaun deposit. It extends the known mineralized area to 1,500 metres. He noted that some of the richest intercepts also expanded the gold zone's width by 250-300 metres. This opens new exploration opportunities beyond the main Valentine Lake Shear Zone. The company says it will define new targets while ongoing drilling northeast of the Marathon deposit is uncovering “promising opportunities and identifying several new, high priority targets for exploration,” Hall said. Calibre last month cut its full-year production forecast by over 18% to 235,000 oz. gold and raised Valentine’s capital cost estimate by $91 million to $744 million, citing underperformance in Nicaragua and revised infrastructure material needs. Calibre also amended its gold prepayment agreement with Asahi Refining, securing an extra US$55 million for 20,000 oz. of gold, to be delivered at 2,500 oz. per month from May to December next year. This builds on a US$60 million agreement from March for 27,600 oz. with deliveries on the stream coming from other operations since May.

Will somebody please tell Donald Trump he won? I’m sure he’s seen the official results by now. I’m sure he knows he’ll be moving back into the White House on Jan. 20. But he’s still acting like he’s on the campaign trail. He’s firing off tweets, trolling his opponents and talking about the United States buying Greenland, retaking control of the Panama Canal and making jokes that he wants Canada to become the 51st state. It’s weird, what Trump’s doing. It’s the Christmas holidays. It’s a time for families, not politics. It’s a time for shopping, watching football and building back relationships with loved ones and friends that were ripped apart by four years of ugly partisan politics. I don’t know what topics your family was talking about during Christmas dinner, but at mine no one even mentioned Greenland, Panama or Canada – thank the Lord. I’m the son of a politician. But I know there are many other more important things in life besides politics – especially over the holidays. I really care about the Christmas season and I always try to keep it from being spoiled by politics. I think every American would be much happier at this time of the year if they focused solely on the holiday. That goes especially for Trump. I haven’t been paying attention to what he has been doing or what he’s been saying his policies will be. That’s because he’s not president yet. I don’t care who his appointees are, either. They haven’t even been approved. The best thing Trump could have said to his followers and the entire country was, “Enjoy the holidays. Enjoy your family and friends. Forget politics. “We won. We’ll hit the ground running after the first of the year. See you then. I’m going on vacation.” Trump should know this is supposed to be the time to relax and look forward to the new year. I’m hoping he’s going to make the sun come back out not only where I live, but to come back out over America. I want to see people being happy again, talking to each other again, having dinner with friends, going to movies. I want to see people getting to know their families and neighbors better and rebuilding their old relationships. I think everybody is ready to get back to the way their lives were before the pandemic and the lockdowns came along and wrecked them in so many ways. But that’s not going to happen unless everyone is willing to break out of their partisan bubbles and silos. As for the shrunken army of MSNBC fans who are vowing to continue their failed war against Trump, we know you hate Trump. Get over it. He’ll be president. Instead of spending the next four years whining about the dumb things he’s going to tweet or detecting the coming of a dictatorship in every executive order, the Trump haters should get a grip. Try to look on the bright side of things. Try to be fair. Try to be open-minded. Try to be less deranged. Trump is bound to do some good things you can agree with. Concentrate on the big and important things he might do right. For instance, what if he brings a quick end to two wars, tames the inflation rate and closes the border? Those would be three major accomplishments. If he pulls them off – of if he fires half a million bureaucrats and cuts a couple trillion dollars in spending out of the budget – not buying Greenland will not prevent him from making America great again for everyone. And don’t forget, President Trump. You won. Take a break. Play golf – while you still can.
