In his efforts to , Elon Musk has thrown his support behind slashing a federal office created in the wake of the Great Recession to regulate financial services used by Americans. "Delete CFPB," Musk wrote on X early Wednesday of the . "There are too many duplicative regulatory agencies." Musk, along with , has been tasked with heading up the Trump-created , or DOGE, and finding ways to reduce spending and streamline bureaucracy within the federal government. The unofficial advisors have floated , laying off staff, and . When reached for comment, a spokesperson for Trump's transition team said she had nothing to add to Musk's statement. While it's unclear how DOGE and the incoming Trump Administration would abolish agencies, if it does, the CFPB could be on the chopping block. Here's a look at its purpose, employee makeup, and political controversies. The CFPB was created by Congress as part of the 2010 Dodd-Frank Act. The law aimed to strengthen oversight of Wall Street after its risky mortgage lending practices caused the global financial crisis. The CFPB has a broad mandate to protect Americans from deceptive or abusive practices by US financial firms. The agency investigates consumer complaints related to credit cards, loans, bank accounts, and debt collection and enforces consumer protection laws. Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a professor at Harvard Law School, originally proposed the agency in 2007. In 2010, President Barack Obama appointed Warren to head the CFPB's steering committee to help establish it. "The time for hiding tricks and traps in the fine print is over," Warren said that year. "This new bureau is based on the simple idea that if the playing field is level and families can see what's going on, they will have better tools to make better choices." As of March 2024, the just under 1,700 people, earning an average of about $184,000 a year, according to the Office of Personnel Management. The broke that workforce into six groups; about 43% of CFPB's employees work in the supervision and enforcement of financial institutions, 18% in operations supporting the Bureau's other initiatives, and 14% in research, monitoring, and regulations. Since its founding, the CFPB for consumers through direct compensation, canceled debt, and reduced loan principals. The agency has also issued $5 billion in civil penalties against banks, credit unions, debt collectors, payday lenders, for-profit colleges, and other financial services companies. That money is deposited into a victims' relief fund, with nearly 200 million people eligible for relief. Some of CFPB's most high-profile enforcement actions have been against Bank of America and Wells Fargo. The agency of harming hundreds of thousands of customers by charging illegal fees, withholding credit card cash and reward points, and enrolling them in credit card accounts without their knowledge. Bank of America agreed to pay $250 million. In 2022, Wells Fargo — a record sum — after a CFPB investigation alleged the bank mismanaged auto loans, mortgages, and deposit accounts, causing some customers to lose their vehicles and homes. Last week, the agency finalized a rule like Apple, Google, and Venmo, which offer digital wallets and payment apps and process some 13 billion transactions a year. Earlier this year, the CFPB also limited to $8 a month, compared to the average $32 fee charged by issuers in 2022. Democrats designed the CFPB to have political independence by funding it through the Federal Reserve rather than While Democrats argue that the CFPB's independence is crucial to its efficacy, Republicans say the agency's funding source and governing structure make it and encourage regulatory overreach. Since its founding, the CFPB has faced legal challenges from Republicans and the banking industry, who've taken issue with a slew of agency policies, including those regulating and those making it easier for consumers to . In May 2024, the Supreme Court rejected a constitutional challenge to the agency's funding structure, reversing a lower court decision in a 7-2 ruling. The high court's decision — authored by Justice Clarence Thomas, a conservative — has bolstered the agency but likely won't shield it from ongoing criticism and legal attacks. Not everything the agency does has courted controversy. Recently, the agency won for a new rule that would allow consumers to have more control over how their financial data is used by banks and other financial firms. Read the original article on

Police File Criminal Complaint Against Philippines VP Sara Duterte for Assaulting Security – Days After Threatening to Kill PresidentCoal and gas-fired power plants will stay open for longer under the coalition's $330 billion nuclear transition plan. Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has pledged to build seven publicly-owned nuclear power plants across the country, with predictions the first will come online from the mid-to-late 2030s - a timeline rubbished by some experts. Renewables would make up just over half of Australia's energy grid by 2050, with nuclear accounting for just under 40 per cent and the rest a combination of storage and gas, snippets of the plan dropped ahead of its release contend. Labor's plan is to have the grid firmed by just over 80 per cent renewable energy by 2030. This will increase to more than 90 per cent by 2050 with the rest made up of storage and gas. Nuclear energy would provide the "always-on" power to back up renewables and lead to cheaper power bills in the long run, Mr Dutton claimed. But nuclear energy does not offer a good deal for Australia, a report released just ahead of Mr Dutton unveiling his costings found, while postponing coal power station closures would heighten Australia's carbon emissions in the medium term. For the seventh straight year, the GenCost 2024-25 Report found renewable energy sources are the lowest-cost of any new-build electricity-generating technology. Nuclear energy generation would be 1.5 to two times more expensive than large-scale solar, according to the analysis by the national science agency CSIRO and the Australian Energy Market Operator. Energy market operators would also need to establish new connection points to safely supply the national electricity grid, experts have said. The coalition's plan was modelled by Frontier Economics, which cost Labor's transition around $600 billion. Energy Minister Chris Bowen has rubbished this number, saying the government's plan would cost $122 billion, citing a forecast made by the national energy grid operator. "They're making it up as they go along," Mr Bowen told ABC TV of the coalition's costings on Friday. Mr Bowen said preliminary reports of the coalition's plan ahead of Friday's full announcement that nuclear would need fewer transmission lines - therefore bringing down the estimated cost - was incorrect. "I'm not sure how they'll get the nuclear power into the grid, maybe by carrier pigeon if they're going to assert if somehow you'll need less transmission," he said. "They have had to make some very heroic assumptions here and they have had to really stretch the truth to try to get some very dodgy figures." Keeping coal-fired power plants open beyond their lifespan was a threat to energy reliability, with outages and breakdowns happening on a daily basis, Mr Bowen said. "It's a recipe for blackouts to keep ageing coal-fired power stations in the grid for longer," he said. The coalition is pushing for an end to Australia's nuclear ban but has faced opposition from states. Nuclear power doesn't stack up for Australian families or businesses, Fortescue chairman Andrew Forrest said on Friday. "As our national science agency has shown, 'firmed' solar and wind are the cheapest new electricity options for all Australians," he said in a statement. "The cost of electricity generated on a grid dominated by firmed renewable energy in 2030 will be half what you would have to pay if it came from nuclear, CSIRO found." Mr Forrest, who is a big player in the non-fossil fuels energy market, said that without continued action on "low-cost, high-efficiency renewable energy" Australians will be left with "pricier power and crumbling coal stations". "We must never forget - Australia has the best renewable resources in the world," he added. "Seizing these Australian opportunities must be our shared national goal."Initial plans released for 75th season in 2026, including 75th anniversary logo and rings, commemorative ticket and more INDIANAPOLIS , Dec. 12, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Set to celebrate its landmark 75th season in 2026, NHRA officials revealed a series of special plans today to kick off the campaign for the historic year in the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series. Nissan to show off its all-electric R32 GT-R conversion in TokyoLOS ANGELES (AP) — Democrat Derek Tran ousted Republican U.S. Rep. Michelle Steel in a Southern California House district Wednesday that was specifically drawn to give Asian Americans a stronger voice on Capitol Hill. Steel said in a statement that “like all journeys, this one is ending for a new one to begin.” When she captured the seat in 2020, Steel joined Washington state Democrat Marilyn Strickland as the first Korean-American women elected to Congress. Tran, a lawyer and worker rights advocate and the son of Vietnamese refugees, declared victory earlier this week. He said his win “is a testament to the spirit and resilience of our community. As the son of Vietnamese refugees, I understand firsthand the journey and sacrifices many families in our district have made for a better life." The contest is one of the last to be decided this year, with Republicans now holding 220 seats in the House, with Democrats at 214. The Associated Press has not declared a winner in California's 13th District, where Democrat Adam Gray was leading Republican Rep. John Duarte by a couple of hundred votes. Steel held an early edge after Election Day, but late-counted ballots pushed Tran over the top. Steel filed a statement of candidacy on Monday with federal regulators, which would allow her to continue raising funds. It wasn’t immediately clear if she planned to seek a return to Congress. In the campaign, Tran warned of Republican threats to abortion rights. Steel opposes abortion with exceptions for rape, incest or to save the life of the pregnant woman, while not going so far as to support a federal ban. Tran also warned that President-elect Donald Trump's return to the White House would put democracy at risk. On Capitol Hill, Steel has been outspoken in resisting tax increases and says she stands strongly with Israel in its war with Hamas. “As our greatest ally in the Middle East, the United States must always stand with Israel,” she said. She advocates for more police funding and has spotlighted her efforts on domestic violence and sexual abuse. The largest demographic in the district, which is anchored in Orange County southeast of Los Angeles, is Asian Americans, and it includes the nation’s biggest Vietnamese community. Democrats hold a 4-point registration edge. Michael R. Blood, The Associated PressIndependent TDs are seeking as many as three junior ministerial roles as well as a super junior appointment as part of Government negotiations, but the role of Ceann Comhairle remains up for grabs. It is understood that the two main parties have indicated a willingness to give those in the regional group of Independents two minister of state roles as well as a super junior role, which would allow that person attend Cabinet. However, the group of Independents is pushing for more than this with one indicating that “we might get one more” before adding that “it’s hard to keep everyone happy”. The group of non-party TDs is also seeking the backing of Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael to ensure Verona Murphy is appointed Ceann Comhairle next week. But one source indicated that Micheál Martin "still has some work to do" to convince party members to back her for the powerful position, with veteran TD John McGuinness entering the race alongside outgoing Ceann Comhairle Seán Ó Fearghaíl. Mr McGuinness filed his nomination papers to fill the position as the Dáil's chair on Thursday. He told the Irish Examiner that Mr Martin was aware of his decision. He said he had been nominated by "a smattering" of people across parties and said reform of the Dáil is needed. "I'm in the Dáil for 27 years and know the workings inside and out. I know the changes that need to be made to allow members go front and centre to make it more democratic. I see reform as being a centrepiece of this work. I see the members being central to that." The vote to fill the Ceann's chair will be held on Wednesday when the 34th Dáil sits for the first time. Fianna Fáil sources said they believe that the party's TDs would "much rather" vote for one of their own than Ms Murphy. While some said the Wexford TD had "annoyed" Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael in previous dealings across the Dáil chamber, one party TD said that it was "not personal". "Why wouldn't we want to see one of our TDs elected to the role?" they said. Others questioned whether Mr Martin and Taoiseach Simon Harris could even promise the role to anyone given that it is one of the rare instances of a secret ballot in Irish politics. In 2020, the Government's nominee for Leas Ceann Comhairle Fergus O'Dowd was beaten by Galway TD Catherine Connolly in a shock result. A Fianna Fáil TD questioned whether Mr Martin would leave himself open to a similar result. Meanwhile, the Social Democrats will continue discussions with Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael around government formation next week, the party has decided. Deputy leader Cian O'Callaghan has said that he expects the party's five dealbreakers to come into focus when they meet with Micheál Martin and Simon Harris again. With this in mind, it was decided that talks will also continue with Sinn Féin and Labour. Labour will meet with Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael on Friday, but the growing expectation is that the party will not go into government. The Social Democrats negotiating team, made up of Mr O'Callaghan, Jennifer Whitmore, and Gary Gannon, had met with the Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael ministers on Wednesday and updated the party on Thursday. "We reported that the meetings had been positive and constructive with a good exchange of views," Mr O'Callaghan said. He said there were detailed discussions with the two leaders around climate, housing, disability, healthcare, and childcare. The Social Democrats outlined its red line issues during the campaign and said it intends to stand by these. He said there was "some interest" shown in the proposal to have a senior minister for disability. "I wouldn't say it was rejected outright or anything like that but it was very initial discussions that we were having in those areas," Mr O'Callaghan said. The most challenging topic of the discussions was in terms of climate, he said, but added there were further challenges in other areas as well.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responded to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump in a letter published Tuesday, addressing the issue of the fentanyl crisis and broader drug-related challenges. Her message emphasized cooperation over confrontation — whereas Trump has a penchant for the latter . “Neither threats nor tariffs will solve the migration or the drug abuse phenomenon in the US,” Sheinbaum said , calling for collaborative solutions to mitigate the escalating drug crisis. Sheinbaum detailed Mexico's recent measures, including enforcement actions by the armed forces and prosecutors. According to the data she shared, in 2024 alone, authorities seized large quantities of “various drugs”, confiscated over 10,340 firearms, and arrested more than 15,640 individuals for drug-related violence. Furthermore, she noted Mexico’s legislative progress toward stricter penalties. She stressed that addressing this issue requires international collaboration: “It is publicly known that these precursors are smuggled into North America. This makes global cooperation imperative.” The president juxtaposed the flow of drugs with the southbound illegal trafficking of firearms from the U.S. into Mexico . She cited stark statistics: 70% of illegal weapons seized in Mexico originate in the U.S., fueling violence. “The synthetic drugs are not consumed by us, and the weapons are not produced here. Yet, we bear the brunt of the deaths caused by organized crime in response to the demand for drugs in your country.” Read Also: How Trump’s Election Could Revolutionize Cannabis And Cryptocurrency, CEO Says ‘Reciprocal Understanding And Cooperation’ Sheinbaum rejected the efficacy of punitive tariffs in addressing these challenges. Instead, she urged for “reciprocal understanding and cooperation” between the two nations. She noted that mutual economic ties, especially in industries like automotive manufacturing, would suffer under an antagonistic approach, leading to inflation and job losses on both sides of the border, and posed that both Mexico and the U.S. should work together on a mobility program instead of reinforcing the borders. “I am convinced that North America's economic strength lies in preserving our commercial partnership. Dialogue is the best path toward understanding, peace, and prosperity for our nations,” she added. Young-hee has also hit the streets of Seoul (that’s one busy doll!) while fans played “Red Light, Green Light” on the Champs-Elysees in front of 20,000 spectators in Paris. The creators have teased that this season will be darker than the last and judging by the intense trailers, you can count on an exploration of the theme of revenge. Let the new games begin!
