The Warriors are off to a blazing 9-2 start and the record does not quite do the team justice with one loss coming to a high school team and the other versus Callaway Middle. Britt Gaylor’s Warriors back down from no opposition. “We were technically, I think, supposed to play Strong Rocks JV team, but they ended up just playing their varsity against us. And it was fun because all the girls were fired up about it. They weren’t worried about playing older girls. And we went out there and played them close most of the game. We ended up losing by ten, but we were in the game the entire way. And that was that was awesome to see that,” said Gaylor, the team’s head coach. The Warriors are playing their best ball of the young season as of late. LaGrange Academy beat Valley (AL) and Harris County Middle School teams at a tournament last week, proving that the Warriors can go toe-to-toe with public schools just as well as the private schools. “We ended up beating both of them just because we were used to the physicality and we knew what to expect,” Gaylor said. “And so that game against Callaway earlier in the season was great for us, and we played well in stretches against them. I think we ended up losing about 20, but there was, there were good stretches that we took away from it and applied the rest of the year. “They were fired up because they went out there and they took it to them. I mean, they played more physical in both games. They played tough defense. Against Harris County, they made a late push in the game, but we were so composed down the stretch, taking care of the ball, knocking down our free throws and it got the girls fired up.” The current LaGrange Academy squad is chock-full of versatile talent. Molly Edelson is leading the team in scoring and assists and is one of the more talented young players to come through LaGrange Academy in some time. “Molly Edelson is leading, leading us in scoring, but she’s also leading us in assists, and she, she’s really the connector, getting everybody involved. And it’s really radiated through the team. And again, they’re so much fun to coach when they’re playing together like that,” Gaylor said. “Molly’s sister Ava is also doing a lot on the court for us as are Halynn Pierson and Makenna Cagle.” The Warriors have talented offensive players, but what separates the team from many of their peers is the size and all-around play of the players on the team “Ava is so helpful on offense, taking care of the ball, knocking down open shots. Makenna, the same thing, taking care of the ball, knocking down open shots, but also she’s our best team defender in terms of, she knows how to guard the ball, but she also knows how to help and so she’s so good playing team defense with our girls, and then Halynn is just she’s so athletic and so fierce and aggressive on defense that she takes other teams best player out of the game completely. She’s done that pretty much in every one of our games this year,” Gaylor said. Eighth grader Katie Hill gives the team some size and rebounding while seventh grader Avery Vaughn gives the team some quickness and speed. All these girls alongside Syndey Thash, Liza Campbell and Kinsley Burgess have mostly been playing together for a year or more which gives the team such great chemistry. “This is for most of them the second or third year in the program,” Gaylor said. “I think that myself and you go back to even when Coach (Ken) Klinger was the head coach, we have done a really good job of developing them as they came up through our youth program, doing things like going to camp and stuff like that. So we’ve watched these girls grow a lot in the last couple of years.” The Warriors are enjoying a short break before a return to the court on the road to Brookstone on Jan. 8. Don’t expect any drastic New Year’s resolutions from the team as they look to keep the momentum rolling into 2025.

Emboldened by the view from the top of the NFC North, the Detroit Lions are out to eliminate nightmare holiday gatherings when the Chicago Bears come to town Thursday for a lunchtime division duel. The Lions (10-1) are streaking one direction, the Bears (4-7) the other in the first matchup of the season between teams on opposite ends of the division. Riding a nine-game winning streak, their longest since a 10-game streak during their first season in Detroit in 1934, the Lions are burdened by losses in their traditional Thanksgiving Day game the past seven seasons. Three of the defeats are courtesy of Chicago. The Bears and Lions get together for the 20th time on Thanksgiving -- the Bears have 11 wins -- this week in the first of two meetings between the teams in a 25-day span. Detroit goes to Soldier Field on Dec. 22. "I think there's two things," Campbell said of the Thanksgiving losing streak. "Number one -- Get a W. And it's a division win that's why this huge. Number two is because the players are going to get a couple of days off. So, they have family, friends in, it'd be nice to feel good about it when you're with everybody because it's just not real fun. It's not real fun to be around." Detroit (10-1) owns the best record in the NFC but the Lions aren't even assured of a division title. Minnesota sits one game behind them and Green Bay is two games back. The Bears (4-7) sit in last place and would likely need to run the table to have any chance of making the playoffs. The Lions have been dominant in all phases and haven't allowed a touchdown in the past 10 consecutive quarters. Detroit's offense ranks first in points per game (32.7) and second in total yardage (394.3) The Lions defense has not given up a touchdown in the last 10 quarters. Rookie placekicker Jake Bates has made all 16 of his field goal attempts, including four from 50-plus yards over the past three games. Chicago shows up in a foul mood. The Bears are saddled with a five-game losing streak and Chicago's defense has been destroyed for nearly 2,000 total yards in the last four games. The company sold about $561 million worth of shares in its at-the-market equity offering and then used the proceeds to add to its pile, according to a filing made with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday. Last week's purchase came at an average price of about $106,613, just below bitcoin's record high of about $108,500. Since then, the cryptocurrency has declined 14%, to $92,893. MicroStrategy now owns 444,262 bitcoins, acquired for $27.7 billion at an average price of $62,257. It's the largest corporate holder of bitcoin. Despite its impressive bitcoin stash, MicroStrategy Chairman Michael Saylor is playing a risky game, taking on leverage to buy as much of the cryptocurrency as possible. "Their strategy is to issue convertible bonds and use the proceeds to buy bitcoin. That is literally the definition of a leveraged trade — borrowing money to buy a financial asset," Steve Sosnick, chief strategist at Interactive Brokers, told Business Insider last week. MicroStrategy said in October that to buy that much in bitcoin over the next few years. The company has since purchased nearly 200,000 bitcoins and increased its average cost basis from $39,266 in October to about $62,257 today. "That works fabulously when the price of the asset moves in your favor, which it has done spectacularly with bitcoin, but has a nasty way of unraveling if it moves in the opposite direction," Sosnick said. While MicroStrategy is sitting on an enormous unrealized gain of about $41 billion tied to its bitcoin bet, a significant decline in the cryptocurrency could put the company at risk, especially considering that its underlying software business is not consistently profitable and that it has raised more than $7 billion in convertible debt. Sosnick highlighted that MicroStrategy benefits from a "self-fulfilling feedback loop" as it buys up more bitcoin, helping push the price higher, and then sells more debt and equity to buy more bitcoin, which subsequently pushes the price higher. "These types of things never go on forever and often end poorly — the question is 'when?' The short-term answer seems to be 'not yet,'" Sosnick said. But Anthony Scaramucci, founder of hedge fund company SkyBridge Capital, doesn't think Saylor's bitcoin bet has to end badly even if the cryptocurrency suffers a bear market decline. Instead, Scaramucci said bitcoin would need to experience a "systemic collapse" for MicroStrategy's leveraged bitcoin bet to collapse. "People think if bitcoin crashes, he is going to implode, and as a result of it, leverage is going to unwind in the system and there's going to be a collapse," Scaramucci told Bloomberg last week. "But if you really study his balance sheet, he has long, long-term debt, and he has rolling long-term debt. You'd have to have a systemic collapse in bitcoin, and you'd have it to last six or seven years to flash him out." According to Sosnick, the stock will stay elevated as long as the hype and momentum continue for bitcoin and MicroStrategy. Even small bitcoin corrections can have a big impact on MicroStrategy stock, however. A 9% sell-off in bitcoin in late November coincided with a near 40% decline in MicroStrategy stock peak-to-trough. Granted, the volatility has subsided over the past week. Amid bitcoin's current 14% correction, MicroStrategy stock has been less volatile, falling about 17%. For his part, MicroStrategy's Saylor is keep up the evangelism for bitcoin. He told CNBC last week that buying bitcoin was like buying a piece of Manhattan a few hundred years ago. "We'll just keep buying the top forever. Every day is a good day to buy bitcoin. I would have bought Manhattan 100 years ago, 200 years ago, every year for the past 300 years. You pay a little bit more than the person that bought Manhattan before you, but it's always a good investment to invest in the economic capital of the free world," Saylor said, before mentioning for bitcoin.
