The Gwent Bridge Academy, one of Newport's longest-standing social clubs, held its annual President's Day event on October 27. This was a particularly special occasion for the club as it marked 50 years since the club was founded in Newport by the late Barry Clowes. Guests of honour at the celebrations included the Mayor of Newport, Ray Mogford, and his wife Sallie, as well as both of Newport's local MPs Jessica Morden and Ruth Jones. The club chairperson Enid Snelgrove gave a speech telling the history of the club, which was originally founded by Barry as a fee-paying academy for advancing the game of bridge. Sophie Cunningham then told the moving story of how her father Graham Jones inherited the Academy on the death of Barry Clowes, turned it into a members club and moved it into the premises on Clayton Street where it remains to this day. Enid spoke about the effect that Covid has had on the club, and how the club is adapting by moving online. Both Jessica Morden and Ray Mogford also spoke about the importance to Newport of institutions such as the Academy, and looked forwards to a bright future for the club. On that note, Bill Parkinson, the club secretary was keen to let people know that the club is looking for new players and is running lessons. "Bridge is a fantastic way to keep your mind sharp, meet new people, and have fun. We'd encourage anyone with an interest in learning bridge or enhancing their skills to come to our lessons," Bill said. The guests enjoyed a delicious buffet lunch provided by local Usk caterers Napier Catering, then moved on to the main event of the day - the bridge tournament. More than 60 players competed for three hours for the President's Cup. This was won by Paul Cunningham and Joseph Bentley. The club runs bridge lessons on Tuesday nights and new members are always welcome.

New Delhi, Nov 24 (PTI) A fresh plea has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking a probe into the indictment of billionaire industrialist Gautam Adani who has been charged in the US for alleged bribery and fraud, saying the move "unveiled malpractices carried out by the conglomerate". The plea has been filed by advocate Vishal Tiwari as an interlocutory application in the batch of pleas in the Adani-Hindenburg row over allegations of stock price manipulation by the Indian corporate giant. The US Department of Justice has accused Adani of being part of an elaborate scheme to pay USD 265 million (about Rs 2,200 crore) bribe to Indian officials in exchange for favourable terms for solar power contracts in four Indian states. The Adani Group has denied the charge, saying the allegations levelled by the US prosecutors are baseless and that the conglomerate is compliant with all laws. It also vowed to pursue all possible legal recourse. In his plea before the apex court, Tiwari contended that the allegations against Adani are of "serious nature" and should be investigated by the Indian authorities. "The SEBI has to inspire confidence by concluding the investigations and placing on record the report and conclusion of the probes. As there were allegations of short selling in the SEBI investigation and the present allegations levelled by the foreign authorities might have connection or may not have, but SEBI's investigation report should clear this so that the investors may not loose confidence," the plea said. Market darling Nvidia already trades at 37 times forward earnings, while blue-chip stalwart Apple has a forward multiple of 31. But if we dig deeper, we can find some healthy tech stocks that still look like bargains. For instance, these three cheap stocks -- Micron Technology ( MU -0.12% ) , Dell Technologies ( DELL 3.81% ) , and Cisco Systems ( CSCO 1.72% ) -- are likely to go higher. Here's why. 1. Micron Technology Micron is a leading producer of DRAM and NAND memory chips. It doesn't lead either of those markets, but it generally produces denser chips than its larger competitors. The memory chip market is highly cyclical, and its latest downturn occurred in 2023 as the PC market cooled off, the 5G upgrade cycle in smartphones ended, and many data center companies prioritized purchases of AI-oriented GPUs over new memory chips. In Micron's fiscal 2023 (which ended in August 2023), its revenue tumbled by 49% and it posted an adjusted net loss. But over the past year, a new growth cycle kicked off as the PC and smartphone markets stabilized. Data center operators also finally looked beyond GPUs and began boosting their purchases of solid-state drives (SSDs) and high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips to support new AI applications. In fiscal 2024, Micron's revenue rebounded by 62% and it turned profitable again. For fiscal 2025, analysts expect Micron's revenue and adjusted EPS to grow 52% and 587%, respectively, as the growth cycle accelerates. Based on those expectations, Micron's stock looks dirt cheap at 12 times forward earnings. Its growth will eventually cool off again, but this could be a great time to open a new position. 2. Super Micro Computer 's recent problems could also drive even more AI server orders to Dell. Dell isn't a high-growth AI stock, but it's a bargain at 14 times forward earnings. Cisco Systems Cisco is one of the world's largest networking hardware and software companies. Its hardware business struggled with supply chain constraints in its fiscal 2022 (which ended in July 2022), but most of those issues receded in fiscal 2023, when its revenue and adjusted earnings grew by 11% and 16%, respectively. But in fiscal 2024, Cisco's revenue and adjusted EPS declined by 6% and 4%, respectively. Many of its larger enterprise, service provider, and cloud computing customers -- which had aggressively ramped up their hardware purchases after Cisco resolved its supply chain issues -- ended up with more products than they could deploy. That surplus, in combination with the macro headwinds, led to a significant slowdown in their orders from Cisco. However, for fiscal 2025, analysts expect Cisco's revenue to rise by 4% as its adjusted EPS dips 2%. THRISSUR: The district administration's denial of permission for the fireworks display during 'Vela Ezunnallippu', a traditional ritual, at the famed Paramekkavu and Thiruvambady temples here has sparked a row with the shrine managements viewing it as a "test dose" to destroy the iconic Thrissur Pooram. The Additional District Magistrate (ADM) here on Friday issued an order denying permission for the fireworks display in connection with the annual ritual citing the new amendment to the union government's Explosive Rules and based on reports of various state government departments in accordance with that. The Vela Ezunnallippu ritual and the related fireworks display of the two temples are scheduled in January first week. In the order, the district administration stated that there is no physical circumstance to carry out the fireworks display in the area and it may pose a threat to the life and property of the public. The opinion of concerned investigating officers that the fireworks should not be allowed taking into account the safety of public life has also been considered, said the order. The order was issued on the request for permission to conduct fireworks display submitted by Thiruvambady Devaswom. Meanwhile, the order denying permission to the fireworks display citing the central explosive rule guidelines drew sharp reactions from the temple managements. K Girish Kumar, Secretary, Thiruvambady Devaswom, vehemently criticised the move and said permission for the fireworks display is being denied citing technical reasons and urged political leaders and ministers from the district to raise their voice against it. "The Vela Ezunnallippu and its related fireworks are held on the same Swaraj Round where the Thrissur Pooram is conducted annually. The present move is a test dose to destroy the iconic Pooram," he told reporters here. Rejecting the reasons for denying permission for the fireworks display, he said the school, hospital, petrol pump and other such institutions have been there in the area for years and the rituals were held there without any issues in the past. The fireworks display is to be conducted in the midnight after taking all necessary precautions and so it won't pose any security issues as claimed in the order, the Devaswom Secretary further said. Without naming anyone, he further alleged that there were attempts to block the parading of jumbos and the apex court granted permission for the same recently.
