Coach Sheldon Keefe's team has won five of its last six games, including the previous two by shutouts. Jacob Markstrom stopped a dozen shots in the Devils' 5-0 win over the visiting New York Rangers on Monday. That came just two days after he made 12 saves in a 3-0 home victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins. According to the league's record book, the Devils have posted three straight shutouts once, April 1-6, 1997. Jack Hughes scored two goals and added an assist in Monday's win. Timo Meier and Dawson Mercer each notched a goal and an assist, and Jesper Bratt and Luke Hughes both recorded a pair of assists. The Devils' offense has been on display during the last six games, with the team scoring 19 times in the five wins. However, the team's defense has been playing equally as strong. New Jersey has not allowed an opponent to put more than 20 shots on goal in seven games. That's the longest such streak since the NHL started tracking the stat beginning in the 1955-56 season. It's a streak Keefe didn't even know the league tracked when he talked to reporters after the win over the Rangers, but he said it is the result of a team showing the willingness to defend the middle of the rink and keeping the opposition from getting multiple attempts on scoring chances. "Whether it's having the puck well and managing it well or closing space when we don't have it, it's just a really tremendous buy-in and commitment from our guys," Keefe said. "Couldn't ask for more in that regard." That shot-on-goal streak may be in jeopardy Friday as the Devils face a Hurricanes team that averages 31.6 shots per game. Carolina wraps up a four-game road trip Friday. On Monday, it lost for the second time in three contests, falling 5-2 against the Nashville Predators. The Hurricanes trailed 4-0 less than three minutes into the third period before Jordan Staal and Sebastian Aho scored 40 seconds apart, but that was as close as the team would get. Coach Rod Brind'Amour told reporters afterward the Hurricanes' struggles of late are not due to a lack of effort. "We got to keep working it, trying to find the right combinations to spice things," he said. "We know a couple things that we know work, and then it's just finding the rest. But (Monday), we just as a group weren't hard enough to play against for the majority of the game, and we got what we deserved." The holiday break may have come at an opportune time for Martin Necas. The center continues to lead Carolina in scoring, with 44 points (14 goals, 30 assists) in 34 games. However, the 25-year-old Czech is mired in a season-long eight-game goal drought. He's gone the last four games without an assist, which is another season-long streak, and has posted only one in his last six. Public sentiment has shifted out of their favour as the reality of energy transition crystallizes. In that climate, workers have become the symbolic face of both a historic industry sector in existential decline and one stubbornly entrenched in the profitable status quo. Login or signup to continue reading At Foreshore Park on Friday, as students joined the activists in a school strike and the movement leaders gave speeches celebrating a vindicating court win to carry out their action, Australian Manufacturing Workers Union national secretary Steve Murphy said the bitter conflict over climate action had been misframed. "The conflict is not between environmentalists and workers," the blue-collar union leader said. The conflict is that private capital is, every day, exploiting the environment and the workers to make a profit." "We know that mining companies are making decisions in their overseas boardrooms that are going to impact our future. And we are being left out of that conversation." A fair transition, he said, would mean that extractive industry workers would be well-prepared, well-trained and well-employed in comparable work in the new economy and not be left behind. By one research estimate in 2008, 40 per cent of the nation's electrical energy was generated in the Hunter Valley, with coal mining and power generation accounting for about 15 per cent of the region's jobs last year. Still, as the region's major coal-fired power generation infrastructure winds down over the next decade, the risk of significant job displacement remains a vulnerability in the sector. When Newcastle's generational employer, the BHP Steelworks, closed in 1999 at the cost of 2000 jobs and the employment of 1000 contractors, the effect was felt hard. A third of workers found employment in a comparable field, Mr Murphy said, but two in three workers were either relegated to lower-paid and insecure work or never worked again. "My uncle and my cousins worked at BHP when it was at full tilt, and when you come to a dead stop from doing that kind of shift work, there is a real shock to people's bodies," Mr Murphy said. "We learnt that we need to start planning early. When was the best time? Five years ago. But the second best time is right now." "We know that climate change is real, that decisions are being made, and change is upon us right now. It's not coming. It is here." By Friday night, more than 17 coal ships and other carriers had sailed through the harbour, even as the protesters launched a mass flotilla on the water in defiance. They have demanded an end to new coal and fossil fuel projects, a 78 per cent tax on fossil fuel export profits to fund the energy transition, and the end of ongoing extractive projects by 2030. But Mr Murphy said the movement had been misframed as a mutually exclusive choice between jobs and a sustainable environment. "What we are both frustrated about is that there are tables where decisions are being made, and we don't have a voice," he said. Business Hunter boss Bob Hawes echoed similar sentiments in response to the climate protest underway in the city, declaring that the Hunter was at the forefront of the transition to net zero and, for better or worse, the ground on which the shift would be felt most strongly. "Our region stands out for its proactive approach to transitioning toward a future powered by renewable energy," he said. "It is both misleading and naive to suggest that nothing is being done in the Hunter." "While the Hunter region leads the way in advancing clean energy projects, this transformation takes time and requires a measured approach. Ensuring energy security during this period is essential to support households, businesses, and industries that depend on affordable and uninterrupted power," he said. "As an exporter of coal to developing nations and nations requiring energy security, the Hunter region also has a role in ensuring these countries meet their immediate energy needs responsibly while promoting a sustainable future." "The reality of energy transformation, both in our region and the regions that rely on us, is nuanced. We must be careful not to oversimplify these complexities." As the voices of protest were raised at the harbour on Friday morning, Mr Murphy reflected on both the reality of transition and the realities of the working lives of the men and women keeping the lights on. "I have been all around the country, to all of our energy regions where there is coal mining and power stations. And I've never once spoken to a worker who said, I love up first thing in the morning to go and pollute the environment," he said. "They get out of bed in the dark; they eat breakfast, and they might drive 45 minutes to get to work in a dangerous coal mine or power station. They travel home in the dark, and the measure of their success - that they did a good day's work - is that the streetlights are on and everyone can cook their dinner." "If we're going to be moving away from coal-fired power stations and eventually coal mining, we need some decent blue-collar work that is in our town so that we don't have to move away from the places that we love and so that our members can watch their grandkids grow up." "There's a mutual interest (between workers and the environmentalists). If we can manufacture wind towers, that's climate action. If we can manufacture solar panels, that is climate action. If we can manufacture batteries or hydrogen, that is climate action." "We know this is a beautiful place to live. Nobody wants to move away. We need to not repeat what we did when the steel industry closed and use the time that we have to develop a plan so that the Hunter Valley and Newcastle have the secure jobs that we need to transition." Talk about tough ways to lose for the Commanders. Washington managed to score a late fourth-quarter touchdown with less than a minute on the clock to pull within one point of the Cowboys. But Austin Seibert shanked the extra point after a bad snap and rushed hold. Dallas returned an onside kick on the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown to cap a crushing 34-26 loss for Washington at Northwest Stadium on Sunday. Commanders’ quarterback Jayden Daniels connected with wide receiver Terry McLaurin for an 86-yard touchdown pass with 21 seconds left on the clock, setting up Seibert with what should have been an easy extra point kick. Instead, a low snap was a precursor for the shanked kick that went wide left leaving the Commanders still trailing 27-26. Washington attempted the onside kick and it bounced right to Juanyeh Thomas, who took the ball right through a hole in the Commanders’ line for the 43-yard return to the end zone. The touchdown all but ended the Commanders’ hopes of staging another comeback attempt. The Cowboys’ win snapped a five-game losing streak and stunned plenty of prognosticators who had expected the Commanders, who have been chasing the NFC East lead, to come away with their eighth win of the year. The game had already been a bit of a bizarre afternoon for the Cowboys and Commanders, who had scored a combined 19 points through the first three-quarters of the game. Seibert had a forgettable day trying to kick, as he missed a field goal attempt earlier and missed on two extra point attempts. The missed extra point at the end drew plenty of reactions, including from former NFL star Shannon Sharpe. “You’ve got 2 be f-king kidding me. Commanders kicker f-king shanked a PAT,” he wrote on X. To make matters worse, Austin Ekeler was injured on a kick return in the game’s final seconds after taking a monster hit. We eventually was able to get up and walk off the field.
For a glorious two minutes, it seemed like Ruben Amorim was going to come take over Manchester United and fix all their issues immediately when Marcus Rashford found the back of the net. But in dropping points in an away 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town, it shows the size of the job that Amorim will take on. United immediately took the pitch in Amorim's customary 3-4-2-1 with Rashford getting the chance to lead the line, and while he performed well, scoring and putting his only shot on target, the issues of United not being able to actually get the ball to their striker remained. Rashford only took 13 touches and Bruno Fernades only created three chances against one of the worst defenses in the Premier League. For teams that can control a match, this wouldn't be that big of an issue but United isn't in a place to do that, allowing Ipswich to take 11 shots, putting six on target. The Tractor Boys had chances to win the match as well via striker Liam Delap because this team hasn't spent enough time under Amorim to become comfortable in their passing and defending. Luke Shaw's return will be a boon to the Red Devils considering his passing abilities as a left-sided centerback in a back three, and Amad Diallo also shined as a wing back assisting Rashford's goal. These matches are ones that can show Amorim who he can trust compared to where United will need to improve. The pivot of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen left much to be desired but there are other options in Mason Mount and Manuel Ugarte who can give Amorim a different look. With Europa League play up next facing Bodo/Glimt, Amorim will have another chance to see what his team can do in a clash where they will be favored and able to continue instilling Amorim's ideals. It's tough to change everything in only two training sessions and it could be quite a period of adjustment from Erik ten Hag to Amorim. "I know it's frustrating for the fans, but we are changing so much in this moment with a lot of games," Amorim said following the match . "We are going to suffer for a long period and we will try to win games, but this will take time." He also spoke about the struggle of instilling his style on the fly and even during the international break, he didn't have the full team available to work with. In weeks like this, one with two or three matches in eight days, training sessions can also be hard to come by. The blueprint is there for United to turn it around and some of the players are also there but this isn't something that can be fixed overnight. He also had to deal with another aspect of life in the Premier League when Ipswich Town fan and part owner Ed Sheeran crashed his post-match, pitch-side interview . Amorim was noticeably annoyed by Sheeran being there after Ipswich took a point off of Manchester United but continued to finish out the pitch-side interview.AusperBio Secures $73 Million in Series B Financing to Advance Functional Cure for Chronic Hepatitis B
The NBA's five-game Christmas lineup was the league's most-watched in five years, with the games averaging about 5.25 million viewers per game across ABC, ESPN and its platforms, the league said Thursday based on Nielsen's preliminary numbers. It's an 84% rise over the NBA's Christmas numbers from 2023. The Los Angeles Lakers’ 115-113 victory over the Golden State Warriors — a game pitting Olympic teammates LeBron James and Stephen Curry — averaged 7.76 million viewers and peaked with about 8.32 million viewers toward the end of the contest, the league said. Those numbers represent the most-watched NBA regular season game in five years. “I love the NFL,” James said in his televised postgame interview Wednesday night. “But Christmas is our day.” The NBA said all five Christmas games on its schedule — San Antonio at New York in Victor Wembanyama's holiday debut, Minnesota at Dallas, Philadelphia at Boston, Denver at Phoenix and Lakers-Warriors — saw year-over-year viewership increases. Wednesday's numbers pushed NBA viewership for the season across ESPN platforms to up 4% over last season. The league also saw more than 500 million video views on its social media platforms Wednesday, a new record. For the NBA, those are all good signs amid cries that NBA viewership is hurting. “Ratings are down a bit at beginning of the season. But cable television viewership is down double digits so far this year versus last year," NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said earlier this month. “You know, we’re almost at the inflection point where people are watching more programing on streaming than they are on traditional television. And it’s a reason why for our new television deals, which we enter into next year, every game is going to be available on a streaming service.” Part of that new package of television deals that the NBA is entering into next season also increases the number of regular season games broadcast on television from 15 to 75.
