Nothing's guaranteed, but Bucs need to win out to give themselves best shot to make the playoffs TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Tampa Bay's surest path to the NFL playoffs is a division championship. The Buccaneers will need help to repeat in the NFC South , but only if they first and foremost give themselves a chance. (AP Photo/Jerome Miron) TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Tampa Bay's surest path to the NFL playoffs is a division championship. The Buccaneers will need help to repeat in the NFC South , but only if they first and foremost give themselves a chance. That means winning their remaining games at home against Carolina and New Orleans, while the Atlanta Falcons lose at least once in the final two weeks of the regular season. The Bucs (8-7) and Falcons share the best record in the division, however Atlanta holds the tiebreaker after sweeping the season series between the teams. Tampa Bay, which has won three consecutive division titles, is the only NFC team that has made the playoffs each of the past four seasons. “We’ve got to take care of business or else we’ve got no shot,” quarterback Baker Mayfield said after a 26-24 loss at Dallas cost the Bucs control of the NFC South race. “This one, we've got to take it on the chin,” Mayfield added. “It's a short week. It's Christmas week. We've got to focus on Carolina and figure out a way to win.” If Atlanta is able to maintain its lead, Tampa Bay could make the postseason as a wild card if the Bucs win out and the Commanders lose twice. Coach Todd Bowles sounds confident that his players understand the challenge ahead and will clean up mistakes that contributed to the end of their four-game win streak. “We’ve got to win a ballgame (this week). If we don’t win a ballgame, we don’t give ourselves a chance,” Bowles said Monday. “We have to focus on us like we’ve been doing,” the coach added. “We have to correct the mistakes, and we have to go out and win Sunday, and we’ve got to win the next week, and then we’ll see what happens after that.” What's working The offense, which ranks third in the NFL at 389.8 yards per game, isn't a fluke. Despite losing to the Cowboys, Tampa Bay finished with 410 yards total offense. It was the team's fifth straight game — as well as an NFL-high ninth overall — with 400-plus yards. The Bucs are seventh in rushing (143.7 yards per game) after ranking 32nd each of the past two seasons. What needs helps The defense yielded 292 yards passing against the Cowboys, 226 of it in the first half when Cowboys WR CeeDee Lamb had six catches for 100 yards and a touchdown. Bowles said shoddy tackling was the biggest issue — not poor coverage. Lamb had one reception for 5 yards after halftime. Stock up Mayfield's chemistry with rookie WR Jalen McMillan, who has 27 receptions for 336 yards and five TDs, continues to grow. McMillan had five catches for 57 yards and a touchdown — his fourth in the past three games — against Dallas. He was also the intended receiver on Mayfield's deep throw that CB Jourdan Lewis intercepted in the end zone to help the Cowboys hold off the Bucs in the closing minutes. Stock down Turnovers were costly against Dallas. The end-zone interception stopped the Bucs from cutting into a 26-17 deficit with 6:22 remaining in the fourth quarter. Rachaad White's fumble with 1:31 left ended any hope for a last-minute victory. On both plays, defenders ripped the ball out of the grasp of the offensive player. “We knew they were going to rake at the ball going into the ballgame," Bowles said. "We just have to have two hands on the ball, and we have to fight for it. We have to take better care of the football. That’s priority No. 1.” Injuries Bowles said it's too early to project the status of several starters for coming games, including S Antoine Winfield Jr. (knee), who has missed the past two games. TE Cade Otton (knee) and LB K.J. Britt (ankle) were inactive against the Cowboys, while reserve WR Sterling Shepard left during the game with a hamstring injury. Key number 80. Bucky Irving leads all NFL rookie RBs with 920 yards rushing. He needs 80 over the next two games to reach 1,000. He scored his seventh rushing touchdown against Dallas. That tied Errict Rhett and Lars Tate for the second-most rushing TDs by a rookie running back in franchise history. Doug Martin set the record of 11 in 2012. Next up Host Carolina on Sunday. ___ NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl Fred Goodall, The Associated Press See a typo/mistake? Have a story/tip? By now you are probably aware that plastic is a problem. Not only is it polluting our landfills and oceans ( of it per year, in fact), but — and their ability to — are also growing. While the full scope of the is still to be determined, some studies suggest they could , which can . There’s no way to stop our planet’s plastic consumption entirely; that genie is already out of the (plastic) bottle, and it will take government and private sector intervention to make a major difference. But there are ways to limit plastic use in our own lives. Here are some simple swaps to consider. Plastic water bottles are convenient, but they’re a major contributor to plastic waste. They’re also often unnecessary when clean tap water is available. “Bottled water is not necessarily safer than tap water, and oftentimes [the quality is] similar to or worse than tap water,” one expert, John Rumpler of Environment America, . Drinking from plastic water bottles also means . If you’re drinking on the go, look instead to . Stainless steel varieties, for example, are durable, eco-friendly and often insulated to keep water chilled. You already know that bringing reusable shopping bags to the grocery store is an easy way to avoid plastic use — but what about when you get to the produce section, which offers individual plastic bags for bagging your fruits and veggies? Sustainability consultant Caterina Sullivan recommends skipping them altogether when you’re stocking up on sturdier fruit — think apples, oranges or a bunch of bananas — that can live loose in your shopping cart and whatever tote you’re taking them home in. More delicate items (like herbs, cherries or grapes) can go in smaller reusable bags you’ve brought from home, says Sullivan. Make it a point to toss some lightweight canvas (or other non-plastic) totes into your go-to shopping bag so you have them on hand when you need to stash a head of lettuce or want to separate meat or fish from the rest of your groceries. Just be sure to wash them afterward to limit your risk of picking up a . Grabbing a quick bite at a food truck, fast food joint or casual café? Because these places typically only offer plastic cutlery, you should consider bringing your own metal fork or spoon to use instead. And if you’re ordering takeout, many delivery apps give you the option of declining plastic cutlery coming with your meal. While lugging Pyrex around isn’t necessarily practical, if you’re headed to a or big holiday feast and anticipate leaving with leftovers, you might bring along your own instead of relying on plastic Tupperware. You can also look for more sustainable, non-plastic food storage options for your own kitchen. Do you often find yourself turning to gift cards for birthdays and the holidays? Before you pick one up at the store, consider this: Gift cards are often , a type of plastic that’s difficult to recycle and during its creation or disposal. Millions of these cards are discarded every year, contributing to plastic waste in landfills and leaching harmful substances into the environment. Still want to give a gift card? Send your loved one a digital version that goes straight to the recipient’s email instead. Sites like even let you pick a custom image to go on it. Other gifts can pose a plastic problem too. Even some — particularly if there’s a coating or special design on it — and can’t be recycled. Explore alternative options: Wrap presents in fabric or newspapers you were going to recycle anyway, use old gift bags from past presents or repurpose cardboard boxes to make your own gift box. You may not think much about plastic when it comes to your closet, but you should — especially when purchasing new clothes. “Check your clothing labels,” , a consultant and science communicator, tells Yahoo Life. “About 10% of the microplastics in the ocean are from synthetic fibers like nylon and polyester.” When you do need a wardrobe refresh, go for something secondhand, suggests Brianna Sheppard, the manager of plastic and material science at the , so you know you’re not purchasing any additional plastic. “Check out local thrift stores or join a community marketplace to help lower the demand for new production,” she says. If you take your clothes to a dry cleaner, you can bring in a reusable dry cleaning bag and ask that your clothes be returned in that instead of the standard plastic film. Dry cleaners use more than 300 million pounds of plastic film in the United States alone, according to a . You can also swap plastic hangers for wood, metal or . Some eateries have stopped offering plastic drinking straws due to concerns about their environmental impact, but they remain the go-to for most restaurants and fast food businesses. If you don’t want plastic (and a limp paper straw or sipping straight from the glass just won’t do), carrying around could be your best bet. Some come in fun, iridescent colors for an added pop of cuteness with your iced latte. Want something disposable you don’t have to clean? Simar Bedi, CEO of , a waste management company, has a novel suggestion: “ ,” says Bedi, who says that they are particularly popular in cafés in Europe. These stand up well when wet, and come in gluten-free varieties too.

Before Week 16, the Las Vegas Raiders were neck-and-neck with the New York Giants for the distinction of worst record in the NFL and the reward that comes with it: the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft. The Raiders (3-12) have now plummeted out of the top five thanks to their 19-14 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. Raiders coach Antonio Pierce didn't want hear about it when addressing reporters Monday, one day after fans on social media trashed the organization for winning a so-called meaningless game that hurt their draft position. He said fans more concerned with the team's 2025 draft picks should "Talk to Tom Telesco" -- Las Vegas' general manager -- before going deeper. "We don't do this to lose," Pierce said. "We don't do this for anybody's fantasy football team. We don't do this for anybody's draft projections. None of that (expletive) matters to us. The only thing that matters is winning, and that's all we want to do." The Raiders' win was their first since Sept. 29, ending a 10-game losing streak. The Giants lost their 10th straight game to be the NFL's only 2-13 team. Las Vegas is not only tied with four other teams at 3-12, but it currently sits in the No. 6 overall spot because it loses the strength of schedule tiebreaker to the New England Patriots, Jaguars, Tennessee Titans and Cleveland Browns. It's felt acutely by Raiders fans because the franchise has run into a black hole at quarterback. Las Vegas has used Gardner Minshew, Aidan O'Connell and Desmond Ridder at the position, with none making a case to be the starter in 2025 and beyond. Colorado's Shedeur Sanders and Miami's Cam Ward are the only two quarterbacks projected to go in the first round by many recent mock drafts. The last time the Raiders got to select No. 1 overall in 2007, they picked QB JaMarcus Russell, widely considered one of the biggest NFL draft busts of all time. The Raiders' two remaining games come Dec. 29 at the New Orleans Saints and in Week 18 at home against the Los Angeles Chargers. --Field Level Media$3.1 billion Vishal windfall for PE partners in IPO : Biggest capital gains for a PE in IndiaLOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Rams keep doing just enough to win, and a team that appeared to be rebuilding this season has climbed all the way to the brink of another playoff berth. The Rams improved to 9-6 and took control of the NFC West on Sunday with their fourth straight victory since Thanksgiving. Their 19-9 win over the New York Jets in sub-freezing temperatures was not dominant — they trailed 9-6 entering the fourth quarter, and they were outgained by nearly 100 yards — but Los Angeles still matched its largest margin of victory this season and continued to look like a looming nightmare for any postseason opponent. The Rams have now won eight of 10 since their bye week, when they were 1-4 and the NFL world wondered whether they would trade Super Bowl MVP receiver Cooper Kupp or even quarterback Matthew Stafford to spur their roster reboot. Los Angeles decided not to punt its season, and Sean McVay's team has driven from last to first. “You don’t want to ride the emotional roller coaster that these games can take you on,” McVay said Monday. “You do have the ability to stay steady, to stay the course and try to right the ship. Certainly that’s not complete by any stretch, but our guys have done an excellent job of not allowing the way that we started, especially in those first five games, to affect what we did coming off that bye.” The Rams also have clinched their seventh winning record in eight regular seasons under McVay — an achievement that shouldn’t get lost in the recent successes of a franchise that had 13 consecutive non-winning seasons before it rolled the dice and hired a 30-year-old head coach back in 2017. After winning it all in February 2022 and then having the worst season by a defending Super Bowl champion in NFL history, the Rams have made the most of their time in between true powerhouse status and a major rebuild. They also started slowly last year, entering their bye at 3-6 before a 7-1 finish. The Rams can become the first team in NFL history to make back-to-back postseason appearances after being three games under .500 each year. These Rams don't stand out on either side of the ball, although their talent level appears to be higher on offense than defense. Instead, they've mastered a delicate balance of complementary football — the offense and defense covering each other's weaknesses and setting up their teammates for success. The Rams have scored more than 30 points just once all season, and they managed only 31 points in their last two games combined. Their defense has allowed only one touchdown in the past two games — but right before that, Josh Allen and the Bills racked up 42 points and 445 yards in the most recent of a few defensive stinkers from LA this season. The Rams keep winning anyway, and now they can clinch McVay's fourth NFC West title by beating Seattle in two weeks. “Fortunately, we’re in a position where you don’t necessarily have to rely on other things to happen if you just handle your business,” McVay said. What's working Kyren Williams and the offensive line are driving the Rams' offense. After a slow start caused partly by McVay being forced to abandon the running game when the Rams repeatedly fell behind early, the 2023 Pro Bowler has surged to career highs of 1,243 yards and 13 rushing touchdowns with his 122-yard performance in New York. What needs help Stafford's 110 yards passing were his fewest with the Rams and the second-fewest in his 16-year career from a full game. Sunday's weather was a major factor, but the Rams must throw the ball effectively to somebody other than Puka Nacua. Kupp has just 193 yards receiving in his past five games combined. Stock up Defensive back Jaylen McCollough made a career-high nine tackles in only 31 snaps. The undrafted rookie continues to be a remarkable find, earning playing time alongside veteran safeties Quentin Lake and Kam Curl and fellow rookie Kam Kinchens. Stock down CB Cobie Durant didn't play for the second straight week despite being cleared to return from his bruised lung. Veteran Ahkello Witherspoon got every snap in place of Durant, who started LA's first 13 games. McVay praised Witherspoon's recent play when asked why Durant didn't get on the field in New Jersey. Injuries The Rams' improved health, particularly on both lines, is the key to their surge. McVay reported no new injuries out of the road trip following Tyler Higbee's successful season debut. Key number 12-1 — The Rams’ record in December with Stafford as their starter over his four years in LA. Next steps The Rams need to win at least one of their final two games to wrap up their first NFC West crown since 2021. They host eliminated Arizona on Saturday night, but can't clinch the division unless the Seahawks lose to moribund Chicago. The Rams are currently the NFC's third seed, but that doesn't matter a whole lot because both the third and fourth seeds will have to play one of the NFC North's two powerful wild-card teams in the opening round. ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/NFL Greg Beacham, The Associated Press

No. 18 University routs Bard in NPS Holiday Tournament quarterfinals - Girls basketballLOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Pittsburgh quarterback Eli Holstein was carted off the field and taken to a hospital with a left leg injury sustained while being sacked in the first quarter of Saturday's Atlantic Coast Conference game at Louisville. The redshirt freshman's left ankle was caught at an awkward angle beneath Louisville defensive end Ashton Gillotte's hip on a twisting tackle for a 4-yard loss at midfield. Panthers medical personnel rushed to Holstein's aid, with a cart arriving quickly on the field within minutes. Holstein’s leg was placed in a boot before he was helped onto the cart. He gave a thumbs-up to nearby teammates as he left the field to applause before being taken a hospital. Holstein started for the Panthers (7-3, 3-3 ACC) after missing last week’s 24-20 home loss to No. 17 Clemson with a head injury sustained in the previous game against Virginia while sliding at the end of a run. He left an Oct. 24 game against Syracuse after taking a hit, but returned against SMU the following week. Holstein completed 3 of 4 passes for 51 yards before being intercepted in the end zone by Louisville's Stanquan Clark on the game-opening possession. He was relieved by junior Nate Yarnell. NoneWhat's New Maryland Governor Wes Moore was awarded a Bronze Star for his service during a deployment to Afghanistan 18 years ago. The governor's office confirmed that a private ceremony to award the Bronze Star was held Friday at the governor's residence in Annapolis, Maryland. Why It Matters The recognition comes months after controversy surfaced over a 2006 White House fellowship application in which Moore reportedly claimed the honor before the official paperwork was finalized. What To Know Moore, a Democrat, was recommended for the Bronze Star by his superiors during his deployment, including Lieutenant General Michael Fenzel. Both Moore and Fenzel stated that Fenzel had encouraged Moore to list the medal on his application, as it had already received the necessary approvals. At the time, then-27-year-old Wes Moore expressed concerns, but Fenzel assured him that the Bronze Star would be awarded before fellows were selected. However, the paperwork was never finalized. Shortly after completing his 11-month deployment, Moore was awarded the White House fellowship. In August, The New York Times reported that Moore had listed the Bronze Star on his fellowship application before it was officially awarded. Fenzel said that upon discovering the oversight, he immediately contacted the chief of staff to U.S. Secretary of the Army Christine Wormuth to inform them of his intent to resubmit the recommendation. He began re-creating the necessary paperwork and securing approvals from Moore's former chain of command. The Bronze Star citation was officially signed on November 19, but Governor Moore learned of the award on December 14 when Wormuth informed him personally during the Army-Navy football game, according to Moore's staff. What People Are Saying In an August statement Moore responded to the controversy surrounding the Bronze Star by saying: "While serving overseas with the Army, I was encouraged to fill out an application for the White House Fellowship by my deputy brigade commander. In fact, he helped me edit it before I sent it in. At the time, he had recommended me for the Bronze Star. He told me to include the Bronze Star award on my application after confirming with two other senior-level officers that they had also signed off on the commendation." Moore added in the statement: "Towards the end of my deployment, I was disappointed to learn that I hadn't received the Bronze Star. But I was ready to begin the next phase of my life, because the reward for service is never an award—it's the opportunity to give back to your country. When I returned home, I was focused on helping my fellow veterans, a mission I continue to advance as governor,." Fenzel presented the Bronze Star for "meritorious service" to Moore during the ceremony, pinning it on his chest, The Washington Post reported. "I'm so happy to be in a position to right a wrong," Fenzel said during the ceremony , the Post reported.
