In questioning O’Neil, Nine’s Today host Sarah Abo noted that the 40,000 people who would be assisted over four years via the help-to-buy scheme “barely skims the surface” when considering that “there is not a single city or region across Australia where the average income earner can even afford to buy a house right now”. Housing Minister Clare O’Neil arrives at question time on Monday. Credit: Alex Ellinghausen O’Neil agreed the policy was “not a silver bullet” but that “it was never meant to be”. “One of the things I want your viewers to know, is just be really wary about the snake oil salesmen in this housing debate who are pretending that there’s one thing we can do to fix the whole problem,” O’Neil said. “The truth is, we’ve had generations-in-the-making housing crisis in our country that’s been building for more than 30 years, and it requires our government to do lots of things differently.” O’Neil said the government was trying to build more homes, get a better deal for renters, and help more Australians into homeownership. “It’s a big, complex program and it’s going to take some time.” Read more about the passage of the housing bill here. 5.19am Long-running Queensland energy project now tipped to cost $9 billion A 1100-kilometre transmission line connecting the North-West Minerals Province to the electricity grid near Townsville could cost up to $9 billion to build. That is the latest price tag put on Copperstring 2032 by government-owned corporation Powerlink, as Nine News political reporter Tim Arvier reported on Monday night. The $9 billion includes a $2 billion contingency, and capitalised interest costs of $800 million, and follows a previous cost blowout to $6.2 billion, announced by the then Labor government in August. While documents provided to the LNP government suggest Powerlink made the higher estimate in August, Labor told Arvier that Treasury was behind the estimate of $6.2 billion. 5.03am Passage of social media ban a ‘test’ for Dutton’s leadership: minister By Josefine Ganko The bill to ban social media for children under 16 will be a “test” for Peter Dutton’s leadership, says Social Services Minister Amanda Rishworth. Speaking on Nine’s Today , Rishworth said there was bipartisan support for the bill, but that Dutton was losing control of his caucus. “Just a couple of weeks ago, Peter Dutton said he would facilitate this important piece of legislation and support the government. And now we see our senators defying him,” she said. “So this is a test for Peter Dutton and his leadership.” Loading Also on Today was Nationals senator Bridget McKenzie, who said there were still concerns about digital ID laws and privacy. “We do want strong, robust laws to protect kids under 16 on social media platforms. “We’ve been out of the blocks before the government on this. We need to get the legislation right so it does actually get the outcomes we want. “And we need to make sure that those protections exist in the legislation.” Read more about the debate within the Coalition on the ban here. Advertisement 5.00am Social media giants attack ‘rushed’ consult for ban Social media companies, including Snapchat, TikTok, and Meta, have taken aim at the “rushed” consultation process for the ban on children under 16. Communications Minister Michelle Rowland introduced the world-leading reform to parliament last Thursday, which she said would make the online environment better for young people. The consultation period for groups and individuals to make submissions closed on Friday. A Senate committee held a one-day hearing on Monday and is due to report back on Tuesday. In submissions to the inquiry, several groups, including social media companies, pointed to the short notice period. Loading Snap Inc. wrote that “the extremely compressed timeline” had allowed stakeholders little more than 24 hours to provide a response, which “severely” constrained thorough analysis and informed debate. X, formerly Twitter, also criticised the “unreasonably short time frame of one day”, writing that it has “serious concerns as to the lawfulness of the bill”. Meta, which owns Facebook, wrote that there had been “minimal consultation or engagement” and urged the government to wait for the results of the age assurance trial before progressing with the legislation. TikTok said that despite the “time-limited review”, there was a range of “serious, unresolved problems” that the government must clarify to ensure there wouldn’t be unintended consequences for all Australians. Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) has created an account on the social platform Cameo, following a handful of her former Republican colleagues cashing in on the app. Boebert joined the platform Saturday, charging customers for personalized messages of her wishing loved ones a happy birthday or offering personal advice. Customers can also ask Boebert their burning questions or receive a pep talk. It has become a trend for former lawmakers, especially firebrand Republicans, to join the social platform after leaving office, beginning with former Rep. George Santos, who created an account after being ousted from Congress last year. Former Rep. Matt Gaetz also joined the app after resigning from office this month, charging up to $500 for personalized messages. Boebert may have different restrictions than her former embattled colleagues, however. Because she is still in office, she must adhere to congressional rules limiting how much money she can make. There are questions on whether Boebert’s use of the app is in violation of House rules that prohibit members from receiving “honoraria,” defined as a “payment of money or a thing of value for an appearance, speech or article.” If Cameo videos are deemed to fall under that category, Boebert may need to close up shop. The Washington Examiner contacted Boebert’s office for comment. Snap-On Inc. stock underperforms Friday when compared to competitorsSalvation Army and Walmart in Burbank threw a holiday party on Friday, Dec. 6 that included a Red Bull freestyle motorcyclist doing tricks and Walmart employees giving gifts to low-income families who enjoyed live music, food trucks and entertainment. The event included the kickoff of the Red Kettle and Angel Tree campaigns for all West Coast Walmart stores, featuring a $3,000 “Spark Good” check presentation to the Salvation Army. Walmart surprised a local Burbank family by fulfilling their wishlist ahead of Christmas. The family of five lives in a two-bedroom apartment, and for the past seven years has relied on the Salvation Army’s Family Service and Food Pantry program for monthly assistance. The family, whose name was not released, received everything they wished for on a list they gave to Salvation Army several months ago. According to a spokesperson, Walmart gave the family “the entire list, including toys, technology, and several pantry items.” Walmart Senior Vice President Steve Schrobilgen attended, as did hundreds of Walmart store managers and associates, local community members, and Salvation Army officers. Schrobilgen said, “For years, we’ve been proud to partner with the Salvation Army because their unwavering dedication to serving local communities aligns perfectly with our commitment to making a difference. A Second Trump Term Is Set to Scramble Trade AlliancesNational recognition of Springfield’s Chestnut Middle School ‘dream come true’With the upcoming release of Overwatch 2’s 42nd hero, Hazard, the cast will have doubled since OW1’s launch. Now, it seems that public opinion has shifted on hero bans, and players desperately want the feature added. The Overwatch Champions Series 2024 wrapped up at DreamHack Stockholm in November with Falcons emerging victorious, in large part due to their dominance with Mauga and other teams not being able to ban the powerful tank. Earlier in the year, however, the world of Overwatch esports got a taste of what hero bans could look like at the Esports World Cup to great success. As such, many players have been eager to see such a policy implemented both in-game and at other events. Overwatch 2 players call for hero bans Coach-turned-caster Kim ‘NineK’ Bum-hoon expressed his interest in such a feature during the OWCS Finals by tweeting: “We need Ban system.” We need Ban system. This sparked numerous threads across social media with many others arguing in favor of hero bans, especially with the event lacking hero diversity. Even those who were previously on the fence about hero bans believe that the game has enough heroes now to implement such a feature. “The game has currently 41 heroes (almost 42), with so many abilities, playstyles, combos, strategies, compositions and different ways to express skill. The infinite replayability of the game comes mainly from all the possibilities that such a wide cast allows,” one said . “And yet, in the World Finals, once again we see just a tiny fraction of that in display, with only 5 heroes being played 90% of the time. I mean, would you be interested in playing OW if it only had 5 heroes? Wouldn’t it become incredibly stale pretty fast?” “We need hero ban in pro play, PERIOD,” urged another . “I was on the fence about a ban system...and my reasoning in the past was that we didn’t have enough heroes. I wanted to wait until we had 50+. BUT....I think we may need it sooner rather than later,” someone else agreed. Related: Others are using an official OWCS feedback survey to make their demand for hero bans known. Devs tease ‘fundamental changes’ coming to Overwatch However, while the demand for bans in pro play has grown stronger, some are still unsure if it would be the right call for ranked with some believing the system would make competitive less fun. “Stopping people from playing the characters they like is just going to make people not want to play,” one argued. “And it will lengthen the already long ranked match experience by adding an extra X seconds at the start.” The devs, on the other hand, may view things differently. Game Director Aaron Keller, has hinted at having a plan to “fundamentally change” Overwatch . Additionally, when he spoke with Dexerto earlier this year, he listed a hero pick-ban system as an example of how the team could add more “strategic depth” to the game. We’ll have to see what the future holds, but with the roster of heroes doubling in Season 14 once Hazard is officially out, it might finally be time for the devs to try out bans in some capacity.
