In a show of confidence, Clement Stambuli, a senior member of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), claimed that over 70 percent of Lilongwe residents will vote for DPP leader, Professor Peter Mutharika, in the upcoming elections. Stambuli made these remarks while speaking at a DPP rally in Lilongwe. His prediction is supported by a recent Afrobarometer survey, which indicates that the DPP is gaining momentum ahead of the elections. The survey’s findings suggest that the party’s message is resonating with voters, particularly in urban areas like Lilongwe. Chimwemwe Chipungu, DPP’s presidential advisor on organisation, also spoke at the rally, urging Malawians to avoid tribalism in the next general elections and instead vote for a party with a clear developmental agenda for the country. With the elections drawing near, the DPP is intensifying its campaign efforts, and Stambuli’s remarks are expected to boost the party’s morale and momentum in the Lilongwe region. Malawians are increasingly expressing frustration with President Lazarus Chakwera’s administration, citing unfulfilled campaign promises, a high cost of living, and economic hardship. Many feel that Chakwera’s government has failed to deliver on its promises, leading to widespread disillusionment and a growing desire for change. As the elections approach, it remains to be seen whether the DPP will capitalize on this discontent and secure a victory.JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. Makary, a professor at Johns Hopkins University, is the latest in a string of Trump nominees who have declared the U.S. health system “broken," vowing a shakeup. As part of a flurry of nominations late Friday night, Trump also tapped doctor and former Republican Rep. Dave Weldon of Florida to lead the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Fox News contributor Janette Nesheiwat, meanwhile, is set to be the nation's next surgeon general. Some of Makary's views align closely with the man who is poised to be his boss — prominent environmental lawyer and anti-vaccine organizer Robert F. Kennedy Jr., whom Trump put forward as the next U.S. Department of Health and Human Services secretary. In books and articles, Makary has decried the overprescribing of drugs, the use of pesticides on foods and the undue influence of pharmaceutical and insurance companies over doctors and government regulators, points that Kennedy has also harped on for years. Trump said Makary, trained as a surgeon and cancer specialist, “will restore FDA to the gold standard of scientific research, and cut the bureaucratic red tape at the agency to make sure Americans get the medical cures and treatments they deserve.” Headquartered in the Maryland suburbs outside Washington, the 18,000 employees of the FDA are responsible for the safety and effectiveness of prescription drugs , vaccines and medical devices as well as a swath of other consumer goods, including food , cosmetics and vaping products . Altogether those products represent an estimated 20% of U.S. consumer spending annually, or $2.6 trillion. Makary gained prominence on Fox News and other conservative outlets for his contrarian views during the COVID-19 pandemic. He questioned the need for masking and, though not opposed to the COVID-19 vaccine, had concerns about booster vaccinations in young children. He was part of a vocal group of physicians calling for greater emphasis on herd immunity to stop the virus, or the idea that mass infections would quickly lead to population-level protection. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that COVID-19 vaccinations prevented more than 686,000 U.S. deaths in 2020 and 2021 alone. While children faced much lower rates of hospitalization and death from the virus, medical societies including the American Academy of Pediatrics concluded that vaccinations significantly reduced severe disease in the age group. Makary has lamented how drugmakers used misleading data to urge doctors to prescribe OxyContin and other opioids as low-risk, non-addictive pain relievers. That marketing was permitted under FDA-approved labeling from the 1990s, suggesting the drugs were safe for common ailments like back pain. In more recent years, the FDA has come under fire for approving drugs for Alzheimer's , ALS and other conditions based on incomplete data that failed to show meaningful benefits for patients. A push toward greater scrutiny of drug safety and effectiveness would be a major reversal at FDA, which for decades has focused on speedier drug approvals . That trend has been fueled by industry lobbying and fees paid by drugmakers to help the FDA hire additional reviewers. Kennedy has proposed ending those payments, which would require billions in new funding from the federal budget. Other administration priorities would likely run into similar roadblocks. For instance, Kennedy wants to bar drugmakers from advertising on TV , a multibillion-dollar market that supports many TV and cable networks. The Supreme Court and other conservative judges would likely overturn such a ban on First Amendment grounds that protect commercial speech, experts note. Less is known about Trump's pick for the Atlanta-based CDC, which develops vaccines and monitors for infectious disease outbreaks. Weldon is a staunch, self-described “pro-life” Republican. Legislation he introduced more than 20 years ago outlawed human cloning. He also brokered a deal with lawmakers to bar patents on human organisms, including genetically engineered embryos. Weldon also advocated against the removal of the feeding tube for Terri Schiavo, a Florida woman whose family battle over her vegetative state turned into a national debate. Weldon's nomination is likely to placate some anti-abortion advocates, who have been concerned about Trump's nomination of Kennedy, a longtime Democrat and proponent of abortion rights, as the nation's top health official. Weldon retired from his congressional seat in 2008, after 14 years in public office. Earlier this year, he lost in a GOP primary for a seat in the Florida Legislature. If he's confirmed, he'll be in charge of more than 13,000 employees and nearly 13,000 other contract workers. Nesheiwat, meanwhile, will oversee 6,000 U.S. Public Health Service Corps members if the Republican-controlled Senate approves her nomination as the surgeon general. She is a medical director for an urgent care company in New York. She appears regularly on Fox News and has expressed frequent support for Trump, sharing photos of them together on her social media pages. Surgeons general also have the power to issue advisories, warning of public health threats in the U.S. Those advisories can influence how the government, public and medical community respond to health crises in the country. ___ The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Science and Educational Media Group. Santa Clara County education leader accused of malfeasance
PHILADELPHIA — When the Carolina Panthers attempted a comeback late in the fourth quarter on Sunday afternoon, Darius Slay called game. In his return from a concussion that sidelined him last week against the Baltimore Ravens, the 33-year-old outside cornerback broke up a pass from quarterback Bryce Young intended for wide receiver Adam Thielen on fourth-and-9, sealing a 22-16 home victory for the Eagles. Here’s our instant analysis of the Eagles’ ninth-straight victory of the season that improved their record to 11-2: Slow to start True to prior form, the Eagles offense came out sluggish to start the game. For the 10th contest this year, Jalen Hurts and the rest of his unit failed to put up points in the first quarter. Saquon Barkley got going early in the second quarter on their third possession (five carries for 37 yards) to set the Eagles up for a Tush Push touchdown and put them up, 7-3. Still, the passing game remained listless, as Hurts went 4 for 9 for 42 yards through four possessions. A.J. Brown wasn’t targeted on any of those drives. C.J. Gardner-Johnson provided the Eagles the spark they needed to get back into a rhythm. With two minutes remaining in the first half, the 26-year-old safety picked off Young on third-and-3 from their own 36-yard line on a pass intended for Thielen, bringing the Eagles offense back on the field at the Panthers’ 44. Hurts got back into a brief groove in the passing game and got the ball back in the hands of his top receiver. Brown snared his first target and reception of the game with one minute, 26 seconds left in the first half. Hurts completed all five of his passes on the drive, capped off by a four-yard touchdown pass to DeVonta Smith, who returned after missing two games with a hamstring injury. Grant Calcaterra got in on the action, too, making his first-career touchdown reception early in the fourth quarter to pull the Eagles ahead, 22-16. The offense was still inconsistent at times, as Hurts took four sacks and only threw for 108 yards. Jake Elliott was hard to trust beyond the 50-yard line, as he missed a 52-yard field goal attempt in the third quarter. The Eagles opted to punt instead of kick another long field goal to precede the final Panthers possession. Still, the offense’s efforts and the defense’s big stand at the end of the game were enough to survive the Panthers’ attempted comeback. Barkley sets franchise record Going into Sunday’s game, Barkley had the opportunity to break the single-season franchise rushing yards record, set by LeSean McCoy in 2013. The 27-year-old running back needed just 109 yards to best McCoy’s total of 1,607 in 16 games. Barkley made it happen, surpassing McCoy with a nine-yard carry more than halfway through the fourth quarter to bring his total on the day to 116 yards. He ultimately finished the game with 124 yards on 20 carries, marking his ninth game of the season with 100-plus rushing yards, also a franchise record. His most impressive play of the day came early in the third quarter when he ripped off an 18-yard run to move the offense to midfield. However, the Eagles were unable to capitalize on the play, as Elliott missed the 52-yard field-goal attempt to keep the Panthers up, 14-10. Hubbard hot on the ground The Eagles weren’t the only team with a talented running back. Chuba Hubbard has been one of the bright spots for the Panthers’ offense this season, ranking third in the league in rushing yards over expected going into the game behind Barkley and Derrick Henry, according to Next Gen Stats. The Panthers relied on him even more than the Eagles could have anticipated on Sunday afternoon. Depth running backs Jonathon Brooks and Raheem Blackshear went down in the first half due to injury (a knee and a chest, respectively), leaving Hubbard as the lone available running back. Hubbard, the Panthers’ fourth-round pick in the 2021 draft out of Oklahoma State, did the bulk of his damage through small cuts. His longest gain was a 15-yard run early in the first quarter. Still, with Brooks and Blackshear absent for most of the game, Hubbard had 15 carries for 63 yards (4.2 yards per carry) in the first half alone. He scored the Panthers go-ahead touchdown, a one-yard punch-in, late in the third quarter to put his team up, 16-14. The late Panthers lead marked the first time the Eagles have trailed late into the third quarter since their loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 4. Hubbard was steady for the Panthers offense, as he finished the game with 92 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries. He also contributed four receptions for 15 yards. Injury report Gardner-Johnson went down twice in the game. He initially exited in the first quarter after colliding with Tristin McCollum while attempting to tackle Panthers wide receiver Xavier Legette. Gardner-Johnson was evaluated for a concussion, but he returned to action in the second quarter. Early in the fourth quarter, Gardner-Johnson went down again after crashing into Zack Baun on a Hubbard two-yard carry. He managed to walk off slowly under his own power. However, he returned to the game in short order. ©2024 The Philadelphia Inquirer, LLC. Visit at inquirer.com . Distributed by Tribune Content Agency, LLC.

NEW YORK (AP) — Police don’t know who he is, where he is, or why he did it. As the frustrating search for UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson’s killer got underway for a fifth day Sunday, investigators reckoned with a tantalizing contradiction: They have troves of evidence, but the shooter remains an enigma. One conclusion they are confident of, however: It was a targeted attack, not a random one. They know he ambushed Thompson at 6:44 a.m. Wednesday as the executive arrived at the Hilton for his company’s annual investor conference, using a 9 mm pistol that resembled the guns farmers use to put down animals without causing a loud noise. They know ammunition found near Thompson’s body bore the words “delay,” “deny” and “depose,” mimicking a phrase used by insurance industry critics. The fact that the shooter knew UnitedHealthcare group was holding a conference at the hotel and what route Thompson might take to get there suggested that he could possibly be a disgruntled employee or client, NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said. Police divers were seen searching a pond in Central Park, where the killer fled after the shooting. Officers have been scouring the park for days for any possible clues and found his backpack there Friday. They didn’t immediately reveal what, if anything, it contained but said it would be tested and analyzed. On Sunday morning, police declined to comment on the contents of the backpack, or on the results of the search in the pond, saying no updates were planned. Investigators have urged patience, saying the process of logging evidence that stands up in court isn’t as quick as it looks like on TV. Hundreds of detectives are combing through video recordings and social media, vetting tips from the public and interviewing people who might have information, including Thompson’s family and coworkers and the shooter’s randomly assigned roommates at the Manhattan hostel where he stayed. Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. Investigators caught a break when they came across security camera images of an unguarded moment at the hostel in which he briefly showed his face. Retracing the gunman’s steps using surveillance video, police say, it appears he left the city by bus soon after the shooting outside the New York Hilton Midtown. He was seen on video at an uptown bus station about 45 minutes later, Kenny said. With the high-profile search expanding across state lines, the FBI announced late Friday that it was offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction, adding to a reward of up to $10,000 that the NYPD has offered. Police say they believe the suspect acted alone. Police distributed the images to news outlets and on social media but so far haven’t been able to ID him using facial recognition — possibly because of the angle of the images or limitations on how the NYPD is allowed to use that technology, Kenny said. Late Saturday, police released two additional photos of the suspected shooter that appeared to be from a camera mounted inside a taxi. The first shows him outside the vehicle and the second shows him looking through the partition between the back seat and the front of the cab. In both, his face is partially obscured by a blue, medical-style mask. Advertisement AdvertisementNVIDIA Co. (NASDAQ:NVDA) Shares Sold by Park Edge Advisors LLC
